Multifragment disintegrations, measured for central Au + Au collisions at , are analyzed with the Statistical Multifragmentation Model. Charge distributions, mean fragment energies, and two-fragment correlation functions are well reproduced by the statistical breakup of a large, diluted and thermalized system slightly above the multifragmentation threshold.

Trends toward shared-memory programming paradigms, large (64-bit) address spaces, and memory-mapped files have led some to propose the use of a single virtual-address space, shared by all processes and processors. Typical proposals require the single address space to contain all process-private data, shared data, and stored files. To simplify management of an address space where stale pointers make it difficult to re-use addresses, some have claimed that a 64-bit address space is sufficiently large that there is no need to ever re-use addresses. Multifragment disintegration has been measured with a high efficiency detection system for the reaction Au + Au at E/A = 35 MeV. From the event shape analysis and the comparison with the predictions of a many-body trajectories calculation the data, for central collisions, are compatible with a fast emission from a unique fragment source.

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1996.

The charge distributions and their dependence on fragment multiplicity have been studied for the multifragmentation of 30 MeV/nucleon Xe+Au, Cu. For both targets, the charge distributions are approximately independent of the fragment multiplicity n. However, a residual systematic dependence on n is detectable at the largest values of the total charge multiplicity Nc. Such n dependence obeys a simple scaling law and suggests the presence of an entropic term possibly related to the mechanism of multifragmentation. Thermal scaling between the different bins of Nc seems to occur.

Differential cross sections for evaporation residues and fission fragments for 35A, 100A, 130A and 155A MeV N14 on targets ranging from Sm154 to Au197 have been measured. The angle-integrated cross sections are larger than what might be expected. The fission fragment-fission fragment folding angle correlations for 35A, 100A MeV N14 and 25AMeV O16 on similar targets were also measured. The average linear momentum transfer has been deduced from both the fission angle correlation and from the fore-aft asymmetry of the fission angular distributions in the laboratory system. Extensive historical documentation of exposures and releases at government-owned energy facilities is a unique and valuable resource for analyzing and communicating health risks. Facilities at all stages of the atomic fuel cycle were the subject of numerous industrial hygiene, occupational health, and environmental assessments during the Cold War period. Uranium mines and mills on the Colorado Plateau were investigated as early as the 1940s. One such facility was the mill in Monticello, Utah, which began operation as a vanadium extraction plant in 1943 and was later adapted to recover uranium from camotite ores. The mill ceased operation in 1960. The …

Between 1989-1991, I studied the effects of livestock grazing on vegetation and small mammals in semiarid shrub-grassland habitats of south-central Utah. Responses were measured at 2 spatial habitat scales; patches and macrohabitats. Patch-scale data were obtained from 4 small (<1 ha) livestock exclosures and nearby grazed areas. Macrohabitat-scale data were collected at 4 actively grazed sites and 4 comparable, excellent condition sites, ungrazed for 30+ years. Ungrazed patch and macrohabitat sites had more surface litter, greater perennial grass cover, and taller perennial grass plants, but treatment response varied among sites. Small mammal responses were apparent only at the macrohabitat scale, where ungrazed sites had 50% greater species richness and 80% higher abundance. Small mammal reproductive activity and biomass were not affected by rest from grazing at either scale. Small mammal community composition varied greatly among sites and within treatments. This variability has important implications for ecological monitoring efforts involving these species.

Multifragment disintegrations have been measured for central Au+Au collisions at EA=35 MeV. Fragment emission occurs predominantly at low center of mass energies of about EA≈5 MeV, consistent with a Coulomb dominated breakup of a single source. Mean fragment multiplicities of ⟨NIMF⟩≈10.8 are extracted after correction for the detection efficiency. The fragment charge distributions decrease much more gradually than expected from scaling laws recently applied to the extraction of critical exponents for the nuclear liquid-gas phase transition from nuclear collisions.

The fragmentation of E/A=40 MeV Ne20 projectiles into exit channels containing only p, d, t, He3, α, He6, Li6, and Li7fragments has been investigated. Relative shifts between the average longitudinal velocity of each fragment type were measured with Sn120 and Au197 targets. A post-breakup Coulomb acceleration component of these shifts was isolated. Its magnitude indicates that the projectile broke up while in near contact with the target. On the other hand, correlations between projectile fragments indicate that a significant fraction of these fragments are produced by the sequential decay of long- and short-lived unstable intermediates. We estimate the cross section for quasielastic double pion exchange in high energy proton-proton collisions. Total and elastic ππ cross sections are calculated in an equivalent pion approximation, with pion-baryon vertices taken from chiral perturbation theory.

Coincidence measurements have been made between and a second particle () produced in the reactions 905 and 1030 MeV and 550 and 750 MeV . All four of the reactions lead to composite systems of 149Tb∗ or 148Gd∗ which facilitates comparisons of matched reactions. In the two reactions and the 550 MeV reaction, the particle-particle coincidences are dominated by processes that lead to evaporation residues. In the 750 MeV reaction, about half of the 1H and 4He are associated with evaporation residue production. These particle-particle coincidences arise from cross sections that are subsets of the total evaporation residue cross sections. …

Multifragmentation for 129Xe-induced reactions on several targets (natCu, 89Y, 165Ho, 197Au) has been studied at . The probability of emitting n intermediate mass fragments is shown to be binomial at each transversal energy and reducible to an elementary binary probability p. For each target and at each bombarding energy, p shows a thermal behavior as demonstrated by linear Arrhenius plots. A nearly universal linear Arrhenius plot is observed at each bombarding energy, independent of target. The sensitivity of p to the Zthreshold points to its physical significance and rules out auto-correlation effects.

Two-proton correlation functions for central collisions of 36Ar+45Sc at E/A=80, 120, and 160 MeV are compared to calculations with the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model. Agreement is found at E/A=80MeV, but the model predicts too large correlations at E/A=120 and 160 MeV. The discrepancy may be due to delayed emission of protons from particle-unstable states not modeled in BUU.

Multifragment decays of central collisions in 84Kr+197Au at E/A=35, 55, and 70 MeV are studied. The dependence of the extracted emission time on the velocity of the fragment pair is investigated. More energetic pairs manifest a stronger Coulomb interaction, indicating emission from a source of smaller spatial-temporal extent than less energetic pairs. This trend can be understood in the context of a statistical model that allows the source characteristics to evolve as the fragments are emitted.

Intermediate-mass-fragment emission has been studied in central E/A=30 MeV Xe129+natCu reactions. The measured fragment multiplicities, reduced-velocity correlation functions, and emission velocities have been compared with schematic three-body trajectory calculations and with three statistical models with input based upon a dynamical BNV code. The statistical models which include expansion either explicitly or implicitly are able to generate a sufficient number of fragments. The three-body trajectory calculations indicate a mean emission time of ≊200 fm/c, consistent with sequential decay. A strong thermal signature is found in the charge distributions associated with multifragmentation from the reaction 36Ar+197Au at E/A=110 MeV. The n-fold charge distributions are reducible to the onefold charge distributions through a simple scaling that is dictated by fold number and charge conservation.

Reduced-velocity correlation functions between two and three intermediate mass fragments are compared for central Ar36+197Ar collisions at E/A=50 MeV. Previously published N-body Coulomb-trajectory calculations, capable of reproducing the measured two-fragment reduced velocity-correlation function, describe the measured three-fragment correlation function equally well. Moreover, ambiguities between source size and lifetime observed in the analysis of two-fragment correlations remain unresolved in the three-fragment correlation function.

Experimental intermediate-mass-fragment multiplicity distributions for the EA=80 and 110 MeV Ar36 + Au197reactions are shown to be binomial at all excitation energies. From these distributions, a single binary event probability p can be extracted that has a thermal dependence. Thus, it is inferred that multifragmentation is reducible to a combination of nearly independent emission processes. If sequential decay is assumed, the increase of p with excitation energy implies a contraction of the time scale that is qualitatively consistent with recent fragment-fragment correlation data.

Multifragment emission is studied in reactions. The emission process for central collisions occurs on a time scale of ≈ 200 fm/c at 30 MeV/n. Intermediate-mass-fragment yields, velocity correlation functions and emission velocities of Z=6 fragments are compared with predictions of statistical decay models.

Multifragment decays of heavy nuclei have been studied at the ALADIN spectrometer system at beam energies between 100 and 1000 MeV per nucleon. The observed fragment distributions signal a universality of spectator decays at bombarding energies . The role of the radial flow for the fragmentation process is explored by comparing fragment distributions measured for Au+Au collisions at in central collisions and at in more peripheral reactions. At both energies the maximum multiplicity of intermediate mass fragments (IMFs) normalized to the size of the decaying system is about one IMF per 30 nucleons but the element distributions show significant differences. …

The charge ( Z) distributions from intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions depend upon the multiplicity n of intermediate mass fragments through a factor of the form e−cnZ. Experimentally c starts from zero at low values of the transverse energy Et and reaches a saturation value at high Et. In a liquid-gas phase diagram c=0 for the saturated vapor, while c>0 for the unsaturated vapor. It is suggested that in the c≈0 regime the source evaporates down to a sizable remnant, while for c>0 the source vaporizes completely. Fragment distributions have been measured for Au + Au collisions at EA=100 and 1000 MeV. A high detection efficiency for fragments was obtained by combining the ALADIN spectrometer and the MSU-Miniball/WU-Miniwall array. At both energies the maximum multiplicity of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) normalized to the size of the decaying system is about one IMF per 30 nucleons but the element distributions show significant differences. Within a coalescence picture the suppression of heavy fragments in central collisions at EA=100 MeV may be related to a reduction of the density in momentum space which is caused by the collective expansion.

Energy spectra for intermediate mass fragments produced in central Au + Au collisions at EA=100 MeV indicate a collective expansion at breakup. For the first time, values for this collective expansion energy per nucleon are extracted independently for each charge. Typically, these values are one-third to one-half of the incident kinetic energy per nucleon in the c.m. system, but they decrease with Zf, suggesting that all fragments do not participate equally in the collective expansion.

Intermediate mass fragment (IMF: 3≤Z≤20 emission from necklike structures joining projectilelike and targetlike residues has been observed for peripheral Xe129 + Cunat collisions at EA=50 MeV. These fragments are emitted primarily at velocities between those of the projectilelike and targetlike residues. Relative to the charge distribution of fragments evaporated from projectilelike residues, the distribution for "neck" emission shows an enhanced emission for fragments with 4≤ZIMF≤12. This feature is consistent with expectations for the fragmentation of a noncompact cylindrical configuration.

Fragment-fragment correlations are used to probe the spatial-temporal extent of the emitting source in central Ar36+197Au reactions at E/A=35, 50, 80, and 110 MeV. The experimental two particle correlations are compared both with the Koonin-Pratt two-body formalism as well as a three-body Coulomb trajectory calculation. The spatial-temporal extent of the emitting system decreases with increasing incident energy. Within the context of a three-body Coulomb trajectory model the mean fragment emission time rises sharply as a function of the assumed density of the system until ρ/ρ0≊0.3. If one assumes a fixed density, the extracted mean emission time decreases with increasing assumed …
