Increasing application of road deicing agents (e.g., NaCl) has caused widespread salinization of freshwater environments. Chronic exposure to toxic NaCl levels can impact freshwater biota at genome to ecosystem scales, yet the degree of harm caused by road salt pollution is likely to vary among habitats and populations. The background ion chemistry of freshwater environments may strongly impact NaCl toxicity, with greater harm occurring in ion-poor, soft water conditions. In addition, populations exposed to salinization may evolve increased NaCl tolerance. Notably, if organisms are adapted to their natal lake water chemistry, toxicity responses may also vary among populations in a …

A Single-Photon Lidar Observes Atmospheric Clouds At Decimeter Scales: Resolving Droplet Activation Within Cloud Base, Fan Yang, Alexander B. Kostinski, Zeen Zhu, Katia Lamer, Edward Luke, Pavlos Kollias, Yong Meng Sua, Pei Hou, Raymond Shaw, Andrew M. Vogelmann

Michigan Tech Research Data

Clouds, crucial for understanding climate, begin with droplet formation from aerosols, but observations of this fleeting activation step are lacking in the atmosphere. Here we use a time-gated time-correlated single-photon counting lidar to observe cloud base structures at decimeter scales. Results show that the air-cloud interface is not a perfect boundary but rather is a transition zone where transformation of aerosol particles into cloud droplets occurs. The observed distributions of first-arriving photons within the transition zone reflect vertical development of a cloud, including droplet activation and condensational growth. Further, the highly resolved vertical profile of backscattered photons above cloud base …

Modern technology makes it easier to store datasets, but extracting and isolating useful information with its full meaning from this data is crucial and hard. Recently, several algorithms for clustering data have used complex fuzzy sets (CFS) to improve clustering performance. Thus, adding a second dimension (phase term) to the range of membership avoids the problem of losing the full meaning of complicated information during the decision-making process. In this research, the notion of the complex shadowed set (CSHS) was introduced and considered as an example of the three region approximations method simplifying processing with the support of CFS and …

Emotional health significantly impacts physical and psychological well-being, with emotional imbalances and cognitive disorders leading to various health issues. Timely diagnosis of mental illnesses is crucial for preventing severe disorders and enhancing medical care quality. Physiological signals, such as Electrocardiograms (ECG) and Electroencephalograms (EEG), which reflect cardiac and neuronal activities, are reliable for emotion recognition as they are less susceptible to manipulation than physical signals. Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) is also closely linked to emotional states. Researchers have developed various methods for classifying signals to detect emotions. However, these signals are susceptible to noise and are inherently non-stationary, meaning they …

Deep neural networks (DNNs), while powerful, often suffer from a lack of interpretability and vulnerability to adversarial attacks. Concept bottleneck models (CBMs), which incorporate intermediate high-level concepts into the model architecture, promise enhanced interpretability. This study delves into the robustness of Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs) against adversarial attacks, comparing their original and adversarial performance with standard Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). The premise is that CBMs prioritize conceptual integrity and data compression, enabling them to maintain high performance under adversarial conditions by filtering out non-essential variations in input data. Our extensive evaluations across different datasets and adversarial attacks confirm that CBMs …

Probiotic Intervention Does Not Affect Recovery Of Hippocampal Memory Following Disruption From High-Fat Diets In Adult Female Rats, Trisha Patel, Cameron Smith

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

High-fat diets are prevalent in the United States and other countries, contributing to potential health concerns. Previous research has shown that foods with high-fat levels can lead to deficits in spatial memory and alter the hippocampus, a brain area important for spatial learning and memory. Research has also shown that memory deficits can be improved and sometimes restored by increasing the levels of probiotic intake while consuming a high-fat diet. In a previous experiment, adult female rats were fed a high-fat diet and showed spatial memory impairments. The rats were then reverted back to a control, low-fat diet and split …

Data From: Root Distributions Predict Shrub-Steppe Responses To Precipitation Intensity, Andrew Kulmatiski, Karen H. Beard

Browse all Datasets

Precipitation events are becoming more intense around the world, changing the way water moves through soils and plants. Plant rooting strategies that sustain water uptake under these conditions are likely to become more abundant (e.g., shrub encroachment). Yet, it remains difficult to predict species responses to climate change because we typically do not know where active roots are located or how much water they absorb. Here, we applied a water tracer experiment to describe forb, grass, and shrub root distributions. These measurements were made in 8 m by 8 m field shelters with low or high precipitation intensity. We used …
