We report a new measurement of the beam-spin asymmetry, Σ, for the γn → K + Σ− reaction using quasi-free neutrons in a liquid-deuterium target. The new dataset includes data at previously unmeasured photon energy and angular ranges, thereby providing new constraints on partial wave analyses used to extract properties of the excited nucleon states. The experimental data were obtained using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), housed in Hall B of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The CLAS detector measured reaction products from a liquid-deuterium target produced by an energy-tagged, linearly polarised photon beam with energies in …

Variation Of Soil Physical-Chemical Characteristics In Salt-Affected Soil In The Qarhan Salt Lake, Qaidam Basin, Hui Rong, Tan Huijuan, Li Xinrong, Wang Bingyao

Journal of Arid Land

Soil salinization has adverse effects on the soil physical-chemical characteristics. However, little is known about the changes in soil salt ion concentrations and other soil physical-chemical characteristics within the Qarhan Salt Lake and at different soil depths in the surrounding areas. Here, we selected five sampling sites (S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5) alongside the Qarhan Salt Lake and in the Xidatan segment of the Kunlun Mountains to investigate the relationship among soil salt ion concentrations, soil physical-chemical characteristics, and environmental variables in April 2019. The results indicated that most sites had strongly saline and very strongly saline conditions. The …

Effects Of Vegetation Near-Soil-Surface Factors On Runoff And Sediment Reduction In Typical Grasslands On The Loess Plateau, China, Li Panpan, Wang Bing, Yang Yanfen, Liu Guobin

Journal of Arid Land

Vegetation near-soil-surface factors can protect topsoil from erosion, however, their contributions to the reduction of soil erosion, especially under natural rainfall events, have not been systematically recognized. This study was performed to quantify the effects of near-soil-surface factors on runoff and sediment under natural rainfall events on grasslands dominated by Bothriochloa ischaemum (Linn.) Keng (BI grassland) and Artemisia gmelinii Thunb. (AG grassland) in two typical watersheds on the Loess Plateau, China in 2018. By successive removal of the plant canopy, litter, biological soil crusts (BSCs) and plant roots, we established five treatments including plant roots, plant roots+BSCs, plant roots+BSCs+litter, intact …

Adjustment Of Precipitation Measurements Using Total Rain Weighing Sensor (Trws) Gauges In The Cryospheric Hydrometeorology Observation (Choice) System Of The Qilian Mountains, Northwest China, Zhao Yanni, Chen Rensheng, Han Chuntan, Wang Lei

Journal of Arid Land

Precipitation is one of the most important indicators of climate data, but there are many errors in precipitation measurements due to the influence of climatic conditions, especially those of solid precipitation in alpine mountains and at high latitude areas. The measured amount of precipitation in those areas is frequently less than the actual amount of precipitation. To understand the impact of climatic conditions on precipitation measurements in the mountainous areas of Northwest China and the applicability of different gauges in alpine mountains, we established a cryospheric hydrometeorology observation (CHOICE) system in 2008 in the Qilian Mountains, which consists of six …

Spatiotemporal Changes Of Eco-Environmental Quality Based On Remote Sensing-Based Ecological Index In The Hotan Oasis, Xinjiang, Yao Kaixuan, Abudureheman Halike, Chen Limei, Wei Qianqian

Journal of Arid Land

The rapid economic development that the Hotan Oasis in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China has undergone in recent years may face some challenges in its ecological environment. Therefore, an analysis of the spatiotemporal changes in ecological environment of the Hotan Oasis is important for its sustainable development. First, we constructed an improved remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI) in 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020 on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and implemented change detection for their spatial distribution. Second, we performed a spatial autocorrelation analysis on RSEI distribution map and used land-use and land-cover change (LUCC) data …

Dayside Auroral Activity, Aine Merritt, Gerard J. Fasel

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The dayside aurora is greatly influenced by the solar wind. Many different types of dayside auroral features have been identified, including poleward-moving auroral forms (PMAFs), throat aurora, shock aurora, and diffuse aurora. This study looks at the dayside auroral activity using the BACC ground-based all-sky-cameras located in both Longyearbyen (Kjell Henriksen Observatory) and Ny-Alesund, Svalbard. There are times when PMAFs peel off the dayside auroral oval in an ordered fashion, elongated east-west arcs moving poleward. At other times, the dayside aurora displays arcs that have extreme brightening moving through the arcs as they exhibit swirls and become a bit chaotic …

Assessment Of Water Resources In Yarmouk River Basin Using Geospatial Technique During The Period 1980–2020, Noor M Al-Kharabsheh

Journal of Arid Land

It is common knowledge that Yarmouk River Basin (YRB) is shared between Jordan and Syria. Management of YRB trans-boundary water resources is attracting increasing interest because it is a strategic water resource for the riparian countries. Actually, lack of sharing information regarding hydrological flows and basin's water management between partners' countries makes it difficult to distinguish between natural and man-made factors affecting the water body. Therefore, this study seeks to address and assess the main on-site changes that exert on YRB. Geospatial technique and arithmetic equations were combined to carry out an assessment of the changes on water resources in …

Bcse: Blockchain-Based Trusted Service Evaluation Model Over Big Data, Fengyin Li, Xinying Yu, Rui Ge, Yanli Wang, Yang Cui, Huiyu Zhou

Big Data Mining and Analytics

The blockchain, with its key characteristics of decentralization, persistence, anonymity, and auditability, has become a solution to overcome the overdependence and lack of trust for a traditional public key infrastructure on third-party institutions. Because of these characteristics, the blockchain is suitable for solving certain open problems in the service-oriented social network, where the unreliability of submitted reviews of service vendors can cause serious security problems. To solve the unreliability problems of submitted reviews, this paper first proposes a blockchain-based identity authentication scheme and a new trusted service evaluation model by introducing the scheme into a service evaluation model. The new …

Exploiting More Associations Between Slots For Multi-Domain Dialog State Tracking, Hui Bai, Yan Yang, Jie Wang

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Dialog State Tracking (DST) aims to extract the current state from the conversation and plays an important role in dialog systems. Existing methods usually predict the value of each slot independently and do not consider the correlations among slots, which will exacerbate the data sparsity problem because of the increased number of candidate values. In this paper, we propose a multi-domain DST model that integrates slot-relevant information. In particular, certain connections may exist among slots in different domains, and their corresponding values can be obtained through explicit or implicit reasoning. Therefore, we use the graph adjacency matrix to determine the …

Sampling With Prior Knowledge For High-Dimensional Gravitational Wave Data Analysis, He Wang, Zhoujian Cao, Yue Zhou, Zong-Kuan Guo, Zhixiang Ren

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Extracting knowledge from high-dimensional data has been notoriously difficult, primarily due to the so-called "curse of dimensionality" and the complex joint distributions of these dimensions. This is a particularly profound issue for high-dimensional gravitational wave data analysis where one requires to conduct Bayesian inference and estimate joint posterior distributions. In this study, we incorporate prior physical knowledge by sampling from desired interim distributions to develop the training dataset. Accordingly, the more relevant regions of the high-dimensional feature space are covered by additional data points, such that the model can learn the subtle but important details. We adapt the normalizing flow …

Toward Intelligent Financial Advisors For Identifying Potential Clients: A Multitask Perspective, Qixiang Shao, Runlong Yu, Hongke Zhao, Chunli Liu, Mengyi Zhang, Hongmei Song, Qi Liu

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Intelligent Financial Advisors (IFAs) in online financial applications (apps) have brought new life to personal investment by providing appropriate and high-quality portfolios for users. In real-world scenarios, identifying potential clients is a crucial issue for IFAs, i.e., identifying users who are willing to purchase the portfolios. Thus, extracting useful information from various characteristics of users and further predicting their purchase inclination are urgent. However, two critical problems encountered in real practice make this prediction task challenging, i.e., sample selection bias and data sparsity. In this study, we formalize a potential conversion relationship, i.e., user→activated user→client and decompose this relationship into …

A Comparison Of Computational Approaches For Intron Retention Detection, Jiantao Zheng, Cuixiang Lin, Zhenpeng Wu, Hong-Dong Li Mar 2022

A Comparison Of Computational Approaches For Intron Retention Detection, Jiantao Zheng, Cuixiang Lin, Zhenpeng Wu, Hong-Dong Li

Big Data Mining and Analytics

Intron Retention (IR) is an alternative splicing mode through which introns are retained in mature RNAs rather than being spliced in most cases. IR has been gaining increasing attention in recent years because of its recognized association with gene expression regulation and complex diseases. Continuous efforts have been dedicated to the development of IR detection methods. These methods differ in their metrics to quantify retention propensity, performance to detect IR events, functional enrichment of detected IRs, and computational speed. A systematic experimental comparison would be valuable to the selection and use of existing methods. In this work, we conduct an …
