Streaming APIs allow for big data processing of native data structures by providing MapReduce-like operations over these structures. However, unlike traditional big data systems, these data structures typically reside in shared memory accessed by multiple cores. Although popular, this emerging hybrid paradigm opens the door to possibly detrimental behavior, such as thread contention and bugs related to non-execution and non-determinism. This study explores the use and misuse of a popular streaming API, namely, Java 8 Streams. The focus is on how developers decide whether or not to run these operations sequentially or in parallel and bugs both specific and tangential …

A study of the two-body decays B±→XccK±, where Placeholder refers to one charmonium state, is reported by the BABAR Collaboration using a data sample of 424 fb−1. The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BABARmeasurements. Evidence is found for the decay B+→ X ( 3872) K +
at the Placeholder level. The absolute branching fraction Placeholder is measured for the first time. It follows that Placeholder, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance.

Mauvais Coulee Basin Hydrologic Data (Observation And Simulation), Diane F. Van Hoy, Taufique H. Mahmood, Paul E. Todhunter, Tyson L. Jeannotte
Datasets
The authors collected snow water equivalent (SWE) data and compiled a hydrologic model for the Mauvais Coulee Basin using Cold Region Hydrologic Platform. The datasets include observed SWE, observed streamflow, simulated SWE, simulated streamflow, simulated SWE maps (Feb 26, Jan 29, Jan 8 and Mar 26 of 2017), land use maps and hydrological representative unit maps (HRU) maps. This study detected a mechanism of hydrologic change to recent wetting using a cold region hydrologic model.

New Magnetic Field Models Of The Moon, Dhananjay Ravat, Michael E. Purucker, Nils Olsen
Earth and Environmental Sciences Research Data
We use L1-norm model regularization of |Br| component at the surface on magnetic monopoles bases and along-track magnetic field differences alone (without vector observations) to derive high quality global magnetic field models at the surface of the Moon. The practical advantages to this strategy are: monopoles are more stable at closer spacing in comparison to dipoles, improving spatial resolution; L1-norm model regularization leads to sparse models which may be appropriate for the Moon which has regions of localized magnetic field features; and along-track differences reduce the need for ad-hoc external field noise reduction strategies. We examine also the …

The North Dakota Citation Research Aircraft obtained measurements of anvil cirrus clouds over Florida during the summer of 2015 (CAPE2015). The Citation is fitted to take measurements of atmospheric variables (pressure, temperature, dew point, wind velocity, etc...) as well as cloud particle properties (concentration, size-distribution, water content, etc...). Data (at 1 Hz) is included from four flights occuring on 31 July 2015, 1 August 2015, and 2 August 2015. Cloud properties were measured by the Two-Dimensional Stereo probe (2D-S), the High-Volume Precipitation Spectrometer (HVPS3) probe and the Nevzorov probe. Additionally, particle data from the 2D-S and HVPS3 are combined to …

The North Dakota Citation Research Aircraft obtained measurements of stratiform precipitation clouds within mesoscale convective systems over Oklahoma during the spring of 2011 (MC3E) in conjunction with a multitude of ground- and airborne-based remote sensing instruments. The Citation was used to take measurements of base atmospheric variables as well as cloud and precipitation properties. Cloud droplet properties were measured by the Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP), Two-Dimensional Cloud probe (2D-C), the High-Volume Precipitation Spectrometer Version 3 (HVPS3) probe, with the spectra from these probes combined to create a single drop size distribution. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program ran three X-Band …

Changes in temperature alter the viscosity of fluids, which impacts the force needed to move and the diffusion rates of gases. This is particularly salient for organisms that operate at mid to low Reynolds numbers. In this study, we investigated the independent effects of changes in temperature and viscosity on oxygen consumption rates of two coastal copepods (Acartia tonsa and Parvocalanus crassirostris) and used bioenergetic models to predict how these patterns could influence copepods in the natural environment. We found that only temperature influenced copepod oxygen consumption rates, indicating that copepods were not impacted by reduced oxygen diffusivity …

Virtual Reality Accessibility With Predictive Trails, Dani Paul Hove

Comfortable locomotion in VR is an evolving problem. Given the high probability of vestibular-visual disconnect, and subsequent simulator sickness, new users face an uphill battle in adjusting to the technology. While natural locomotion offers the least chance of simulator sickness, the space, economic and accessibility barriers to it limit its effectiveness for a wider audience. Software-enabled locomotion circumvents much of these barriers, but has the greatest need for simulator sickness mitigation. This is especially true for standing VR experiences, where sex-biased differences in mitigation effectiveness are amplified (postural instability due to vection disproportionately affects women).
Predictive trails were developed as …
