Future quantum technologies such as quantum communication, quantum sensing, and distributed quantum computation, will rely on networks of shared entanglement between spatially separated nodes. Distributing entanglement between these nodes, especially over long distances, currently remains a challenge, due to limitations resulting from the fragility of quantum systems, such as photon losses, non-ideal measurements, and quantum memories with short coherence times. In the absence of full-scale fault-tolerant quantum error correction, which can in principle overcome these limitations, we should understand the extent to which we can circumvent these limitations. Rubble pile asteroids are widely understood to be composed of reaccumulated debris following a catastrophic collision between asteroids in the main asteroid belt, where each disruption can make a family of new asteroids. Near-Earth asteroids Ryugu and Bennu have been linked to collisional families in the main asteroid belt, but surface age analyses of each asteroid suggest these bodies are substantially younger than their putative families. Here we show, through a coupled collisional and dynamical evolution of members of these families, that neither asteroid was likely to have been created at the same time as the original family breakups, but …

ANFO is one of the most commonly used explosives in open-pit mining, usually produced by mixing systems on the blast site. One of the problems usually not considered is the moisture”s influence on the stored ammonium nitrate(V). The influence of moisture on fumes and the detonation process has been investigated by placing ammonium nitrate(V) prills in the climatic chamber. In the investigation, the influence was evaluated for ANFO samples which were produced based on the two types of fuel oils. It was concluded that the 3.0% moisture level resulted in the lowest NOx content in both case studies. Further increased …

Mid- To Late-Miocene Hypogene Speleogenesis Tied To The Tectonic History Of The Central Basin And Range Province, Usa, Louise D. Hose, Victor Polyak, Harvey R. Duchene, J. Douglas Powell, Leslie A. Melim, Gretchen M. Baker, Donald G. Davis, Yemane Asmerom
International Journal of Speleology
Twenty-five caves displaying evidence of hypogene speleogenesis in White Pine County, Nevada, were studied between May 2022 and October 2023. Results demonstrate that the central Basin and Range Province is a major hypogenic cave region with speleogenesis dating back to the Middle Miocene. The U-Pb radiometric dates of cave mammillaries obtained so far cover a wide span of time, ranging between 14 Ma to 2 Ma. Tectonic shearing along the Snake Range Décollement up to about 22 Ma probably brackets the maximum age of speleogenesis. Thus, speleogenesis began between 22-14 Ma, which predates most of the Basin and Range extensional …

The almond industry in California faces water management challenges that are being exacerbated by droughts, climate change, and groundwater sustainability legislation. The Tree-crop Remote sensing of Evapotranspiration eXperiment (T-REX) aims to explore opportunities to improve precision irrigation management for woody perennial cropping systems. Almond orchards in the California Central Valley were equipped with eddy covariance flux measurements to evaluate satellite remote sensing-based evapotranspiration (RSET) models. OpenET provides high-resolution (30-m spatial and daily temporal) RSET data, synthesizing decades of research for practical water management. The overwhelming success of GPT-4 in early 2023 highlighted the transformative potential of large language models (LLMs) across various sectors, including national security. This article explores the implications of LLM integration within national security contexts, analyzing their potential to revolutionize information processing, decision-making, and operational efficiency. Whereas LLMs offer substantial benefits, such as automating tasks and enhancing data analysis, they also pose significant risks, including hallucinations, data privacy concerns, and vulnerability to adversarial attacks. Through their coupling with decision-theoretic principles and Bayesian reasoning, LLMs can significantly improve decision-making processes within national security organizations. A group Γ is said to be CCII if the quotient Γ/Z(Γ) is 2-Engel or, equivalently, commutator-inversion invariant, where Z(Γ) is the center of Γ. In this article, we prove algebraic and topological properties of gyrogroups that are induced by CCII groups. Then, using a classification of non-abelian groups of order n with n < 32, we determine all finite CCII groups of order less than 32.

In this paper, Caputo boundary value problems of order 3 < ζ ≤ 4 are investigated on the interval [0, 1] .By Guo-Krasnoselskii fixed point theorem, some criteria of existence and multiplicity of positive and decreasing solutionsare established. The main novelty of the paper lies in its capability to achieve positive solutions while the correspondingGreen’s function changes sign. Finally, two examples are provided to illustrate the application of these results.

This work is intended to establish a relation between Vietoris’ sequence, which is a rational sequence, andhybrid numbers. Then it provides some characteristic properties of the hybrid numbers with Vietoris’ number coefficients.Some relations between this hybrid number and its norm, the recurrence relations, the generating function, Binet-likeformula and Catalan-like identities are also indicated. Furthermore, a determinantal approach is presented to obtainelements of Vietoris’ hybrid number sequence.

In this paper, we examine stacky structures in certain Einstein gravity theories. In brief, using the classicalformulation of (vacuum) gravity, with vanishing cosmological constant, we first construct the stack of solutions to Einsteinfield equations on any given fixed manifold. Using a similar approach and setup, we also study Einstein’s gravity onfamilies of manifolds and define another stack encoding this situation. Later on, we focus on the gauge theoreticalinterpretation of 3D gravity and provide a natural stack associated with that interpretation. Finally, in a particularsetup, we give a natural morphism between the two stacks arising from different descriptions of 3D gravity.

This paper is concerned with second-order nonlocal dynamic thermistor problem with two-point boundary conditions on time scales. By utilizing the fixed point theorems due to Schaefer and Rus, we establish some sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of solutions. Further, we discuss the continuous dependence of solutions and four types of Ulam stability. We provide examples to support the applicability of our results.

Open systems with balanced gain and loss, described by parity-time (PT -symmetric) Hamiltonians have been deeply explored over the past decade. Most explorations are limited to finite discrete models (in real or reciprocal spaces) or continuum problems in one dimension. As a result, these models do not leverage the complexity and variability of two-dimensional continuum problems on a compact support. Packaging plays a crucial role in protecting food by providing excellent mechanical properties as well as effectively blocking water vapor, oxygen, oil, and other contaminants. The low degradation of widely used petroleum-based plastics leads to environmental pollution and poses health risks. This has drawn interest in renewable biopolymers as sustainable alternatives. The seafood industry generates significant waste that is rich in bioactive substances like chitin, chitosan, gelatins, and alginate, which can replace synthetic polymers in food packaging. This paper is concerned with the oscillation of solutions to a class of first-order differential equations withvariable coefficients and a general delay argument. New oscillation criteria are established, which improve and extendmany known results reported in the literature. A couple of illustrative examples are given to show the efficiency of thenewly obtained results. In particular, it is shown that our criteria partially fulfill a remaining gap in a recent sharp resultby Pituk et al. [31].

In this paper, we study the permutation properties of the class of trinomials of the form f(x) = x4q+1 +λ1xq+4 +λ2x2q+3 ∈ Fq2 [x] , where λ1, λ2 ∈ Fq and they are not simultaneously zero. In this study, we investigate the m-th order elliptic operators on n-dimensional bounded domain Ω ⊂ Rnwith discontinuous coefficients in the rearrangement-invariant Sobolev space WmX (Ω). Recently, handling of contextual sets, in particular Kochen-Specker (KS) sets, in higher dimensions has been given an increasing attention, both theoretically and experimentally. However, methods of their generation are diverse, not generally applicable in every dimension, and of exponential complexity. Therefore, we design a dimensional upscaling method, whose complexity does not scale with dimension. As a proof of principle we generate manageable-sized KS master sets in up to 27 dimensional spaces and show that well over 32 dimensions can be reached. From these master sets we obtain an ample number of smaller KS sets. We discuss three kinds of applications …

A key problem in achieving access to and sustained presence in computing and computing education (CEd) in the United States is environments that are all too often designed in ways that are harmful and inequitable toward systemically minoritized communities. While various scholars have explored ways to design equitable spaces within differing contexts, often, equity is framed merely as an issue of access. This dismisses the lived experiences of minoritized communities and can lead to shallow perspectives of equity that fail to address community concerns and further push these communities out of sustained participation and presence in computing and CEd. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent advancements in utilizing zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to enhance antimicrobial and UV protective properties in healthcare solutions. It delves into the synthesis techniques of ZnO NPs and elucidates their antimicrobial efficacy, exploring the underlying mechanisms governing their action against a spectrum of pathogens. Factors impacting the antimicrobial performance of ZnO NPs, including size, surface characteristics, and environmental variables, are extensively analyzed. Experimental design offers an elegant model of many problems where one navigates within a vast search space seeking data points with certain characteristics. A multitude of applications in science and engineering fall under this umbrella, with drug and materials discovery being prime examples. The experimental design approach maintains a probabilistic model of the search space, and uses Bayesian decision theory accounting for this model to guide the accumulation of observed data to maximize an experimentation objective of interest. In this paper we seek to understand what current knowledge of entanglement entropies suggests about the appropriate way to interpret the covariant entropy bound. We first begin by arguing that just as in the classical case, a universal bound on the von Neumann entropy could have either an epistemic or ontological origin. We then consider several possible ways of explaining the bound as a consequence of features of the entanglement entropy. We discuss consider area laws in condensed matter and quantum field theory, arguing that they suggest an epistemic reading of the bound. We also discuss the ‘spacetime from entanglement’ …

In this thesis we develop tools for carrying out computer assisted proof of the stability of traveling wave solutions of the spatially one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with an ideal gas equation of state. In particular, we obtain rigorous, tight error bounds on a high-accuracy numerical approximation of the traveling wave profile for parameters corresponding to air, and we obtain rigorous representations in a neighborhood of positive and negative infinity of the solution to the first order ODE associated with linearizing the PDE equations about the traveling wave solution. We also develop supporting tools for rigorous verification of wave stability.
