Lunar: Automated Input Generation And Analysis For Reactive Lammps Simulations, Josh Kemppainen, Jacob R. Gissinger, S. Gowtham, Gregory Odegard

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2

Generating simulation-ready molecular models for the LAMMPS molecular dynamics (MD) simulation software package is a difficult task and impedes the more widespread and efficient use of MD in materials design and development. Fixed-bond force fields generally require manual assignment of atom types, bonded interactions, charges, and simulation domain sizes. A new LAMMPS pre- and postprocessing toolkit (LUNAR) is presented that efficiently builds molecular systems for LAMMPS. LUNAR automatically assigns atom types, generates bonded interactions, assigns charges, and provides initial configuration methods to generate large molecular systems. LUNAR can also incorporate chemical reactivity into simulations by facilitating the use of the …

Indium-based amorphous metal oxides (AMOs) are important materials that enable a wide range of electronic and optoelectronic applications. The metal cations that substitute for In are known to effectively tune the material properties as well as to retain the desirable amorphous state when subjected to high operating temperatures. While much attention focuses on property tuning, there is less focus on those fundamental factors that enhance thermal stability. Hence, in this paper, we employ in situ X-ray scattering and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) to systematically study the effects of secondary cations on the crystallization process. A series of amorphous (In …

Preperiodic Points Of Polynomial Dynamical Systems Over Finite Fields, Aaron Andersen, Derek Garton Jun 2024

Preperiodic Points Of Polynomial Dynamical Systems Over Finite Fields, Aaron Andersen, Derek Garton

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

For a prime p, positive integers r,n, and a polynomial f with coefficients in Fpr, let Wp,r,n(f) = fn(Fpr) ∖ fn+1(Fpr). As n varies, the Wp,r,n(f) partition the set of strictly preperiodic points of the dynamical system induced by the action of f on Fpr. In this paper we compute statistics of strictly preperiodic points of dynamical systems induced by unicritical polynomials over finite fields by obtaining effective upper bounds for the proportion of Fpr lying in a given Wp,r,n(f). Moreover, when we generalize our definition of Wp,r,n(f), we obtain both upper and lower bounds for the resulting averages.

We present an estimate of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) detector polarization angle systematic uncertainty from optics perturbation analysis using polarization-sensitive ray tracing in CODE V optical design software. Uncertainties in polarization angle calibration in CMB measurements can limit constraints on cosmic birefringence and other cosmological parameters sensitive to polarization leakage. Our framework estimates the angle calibration systematic uncertainties from possible displacements in lens positions and orientations, and anti-reflection coating (ARC) thicknesses and refractive indices. With millimeter displacements in lens positions and percent-level perturbations in ARC thicknesses and indices from design, we find the total systematic uncertainty for three ACT …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ketene is one of the most toxic vaping emissions identified to date. However, its high reactivity renders it relatively challenging to identify. In addition, certain theoretical studies have shown that realistic vaping temperature settings may betoo low to produce ketene. Each of these issues is addressed herein. First, an isotopically labeled acetate precursor is used for the identification of ketene with enhanced rigor in vaped aerosols. Second, discrepancies between theoretical and experimental findings are explained by accounting for the effects of aerobic (experimental) versus anaerobic (simulated and theoretical) pyrolysis conditions. This finding is also relevant to explaining the relatively low-temperature …
