Geology Of Part Of The Creston Range, Mora County, New Mexico, Tim T. Schowalter Jun 1969

Geology Of Part Of The Creston Range, Mora County, New Mexico, Tim T. Schowalter

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The low hills and hogback ridges of the Creston Range form the southeastern edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Rocks ranging from Precambrian to Quaternary are exposed in the Creston Range. The Precambrian rocks consist of generally foliated, medium-grade metamorphics intruded by concordant, simple pegmatites. These rocks have been subjected to at least two episodes of deformation of Precambrian age. Approximately 9,000 feet of sedimentary rocks of Devonian (?)-Mississippian to Permian age that were deposited in an intracratonic basin to shelf environment are present. Tertiary-Quaternary rocks are represented by outliers of a basalt flow from the Ocate colcanic field …

Electrical Conductivity & Seebeck Effect In Activated Molybdenum Oxide Hydrogen Detectors, John Hooker Jun 1969

Electrical Conductivity & Seebeck Effect In Activated Molybdenum Oxide Hydrogen Detectors, John Hooker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis describes the results and analysis of Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity measurements on "activated", molybdenum-oxide, thin film hydrogensensing elements. The work was undertaken in an effort to produce data that would be useful in obtaining an understanding of the electronic processes which cause large electrical conductivity changes in molybdenum-oxide upon exposure to small concentrations of hydrogen in air. The results are analyzed using a simple band model of a semiconductor. This model is shown to give reasonable results at high temperatures; however, a departure from the usual .! model is required in order to explain the results at …

Subsurface Irrigation Research In Arkansas, John P. Hoskyn, Billy B. Bryan Jun 1969

Subsurface Irrigation Research In Arkansas, John P. Hoskyn, Billy B. Bryan

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A pilot study conducted in 1963 indicated that (1) cotton yields could be increased by subirrigation, (2) drilled orifices were unsatisfactory because of internal plugging caused by burrs and drilling particles, and (3) operating pressures of 5 and 10 psi were excessive, and 5 psi probably should be considered as an upper-limit pressure. A greenhouse study of a subirrigation system indicated that 2 psi should, in general, for in-wall orifices, be considered as a lower-limit pressure when orifices are built into the pipe wall. The greenhouse study also indicated that a placement depth of 12 inches was preferable to 18 …

The Effect Of Removing The Crevicular Epithelium Upon Canine Tooth Replantation, Leon A. Leonard Jun 1969

The Effect Of Removing The Crevicular Epithelium Upon Canine Tooth Replantation, Leon A. Leonard

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The nature of epithelium and the remarkable facility with which it aggressively covers granulation tissue, suggests that removal of the sulcular epithelium surrounding the extraction wound of a tooth to be replanted could promote reattachment of the periodontal tissues at a more nearly ideal coronal level. To investigate this hypothesis twenty mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were experimentally replanted. One half of them were replanted in alveoli around which the crevicular epithelium had been removed, the remaining teeth without creviculoectomy acting as controls. Animals were euthanized at one, two, three, five, and sixteen weeks. After clinical evaluation of the …

High Pressure, High Temperature Syntheses Of Selected Lanthanide-Tellurium Compounds, John Francis Cannon Jun 1969

High Pressure, High Temperature Syntheses Of Selected Lanthanide-Tellurium Compounds, John Francis Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

High pressure, high temperature technics were employed to successfully synthesize HoTe1.7, ErTe1.7, TmTe1.7, LuTe1.7, YTe1.7, and LuTe3. The pressure-temperature regions in which synthesis of each compound is successful were determined. Pressures to 100 kbars concurrently with temperatures to 1200 °C were used in an attempt to prepare ScTe1.7 and ScTe3, but these efforts met with failure. X-ray studies of these new compounds confirmed that they are extensions of the LTe2-X (0≤x

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Fluoride And Chloride Ions Upon The Activity Of Yeast Alcohol Dehydrogenase, Ellen J. Hannan

Dissertations and Theses

Very little is known about the effect of hydrofluoric acid and of the fluoride ion on enzyme systems. The purpose of this work was to determine the effect of hydrofluoric acid and of the fluoride ion on the enzyme, yeast alcohol dehydrogenase and to distinguish between the effect of the fluoride ion and of hydrofluoric acid. The rate of the enzyme reaction was followed spectrophotometrically at 340 mμ on the Cary 14 Model spectrophotometer according to the method of Racker. The data taken from the instrument recordings were plotted on two types of graphs, the Lineweaver-Burk plot and the Hanes …

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson May 1969

Directional Correlation Of The 346-136 Kev Gamma-Gamma Cascade In Ta¹⁸¹, Robert Allan Wilson

Dissertations and Theses

The directional correlation of the 346-136 Kev gamma-gamma cascade in Ta¹⁸¹ was measured using the delayed coincidence method with a source of Hf¹⁸¹ in 27 N HF. The contributions to the composite delayed coincidence spectrum of the interfering 133-482 Kev and 133-346 Kev cascades were removed by the subtraction from this spectrum of appropriate 133-482 Kev pure delayed coincidence data. The extracted 346-136 Kev coincidence data then yielded the correlation coefficients A₂₂ = 0.190±0.011 and A₄₄. = -0.025±0.024 that are consistent with the established spin sequence 5/2(E2)9/2(M1 + E2)7/2 and with an admixture of 16.2%±1. 2% E2 radiation in the …

Effect Of Supersaturation On The Kinetics Of The Gypsum-Anhydrite Transition., Pao-Chin Chao May 1969

Effect Of Supersaturation On The Kinetics Of The Gypsum-Anhydrite Transition., Pao-Chin Chao

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Gypsum and anhydrite have been found extensively in evaporite beds. Gypsum is the low-temperature, hydrous form of calcium sulfate, while anhydrite is the high-temperature, anhydrous form. The temperature of gypsum-anhydrite transition has been fixed, by both solubility measurements and thermodynamic calculations, in the range of 38 to 42°c in pure water; and at lower values with increasing NaCl content in the solutions. However, the precipitation of anhydrite has never been obtained experimentally in its own stability field, gypsum is always metastably formed instead.

Many investigators believe that the primary precipitation of anhydrite from solutions is improbable. It is usually converted …

The Monte Carlo Method Applied To An Estimation Of Delayed Neutron Response, Garland David Turner May 1969

The Monte Carlo Method Applied To An Estimation Of Delayed Neutron Response, Garland David Turner

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

An experimental program has been undertaken at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory to study delayed neutron effects. As a part of this program, experiments were conducted with thin disks of various fissionable materials to measure the delayed neutron response to a pulse of high-energy neutrons. In support of the experiments, calculations were made with a computer program which solves the Boltzmann transport equation by finite difference methods. Difficulties with the calculations led to an analysis showing that correct treatment of neutrons moving parallel to the faces of the disk was vital to the success of the calculation. As an extension of …

Lattice Dynamics Of Naf, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy May 1969

Lattice Dynamics Of Naf, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

The results of an extended calculation of the normal modes of the NaF lattice are presented. Three models have been considered : a "rigid-ion" (RI) model, a "deformation-dipole" model with central F--F- short- range interactions (DDNNN), and a “deformation-dipole" model including both central F--F- interactions and a noncentral component in the first-neighbor, short-range interactions [DDNNN(NC)]. For each of these models we have derived frequency spectra for both 300 and 0°K input parameters, the associated dispersion curves for symmetry directions, Debye characteristic temperatures ΘD, moment functions ωD(n), and the …

High-Field Studies Of Band Ferromagnetism In Fe And Ni By Mössbauer And Magnetic Moment Measurements, S. Foner, A. J. Freeman, N. A. Blum, Richard B. Frankel, E. J. Mcniff, Jr., H. C. Praddaude May 1969

High-Field Studies Of Band Ferromagnetism In Fe And Ni By Mössbauer And Magnetic Moment Measurements, S. Foner, A. J. Freeman, N. A. Blum, Richard B. Frankel, E. J. Mcniff, Jr., H. C. Praddaude

Physics

High-field susceptibility χHF in Fe and Ni (at 4.2, 77, and 300°K) and high-field Mössbauer studies in Fe at 4.2°K are reported and related to the band structure of Fe and Ni and to band models of ferromagnetism. The Mössbauer effect was employed to measure the change in the hyperfine field Hn at the 57Fe nucleus with application of an external field. Assuming Hn to be proportional to the bulk magnetization, a microscopic equivalent to χHF is obtained. We also show how the high-field data may be used alternatively to determine the nuclear g factor. …

Relative Electronegativities Of The Propyl Groups, Barry Arkin May 1969

Relative Electronegativities Of The Propyl Groups, Barry Arkin

Senior Scholar Papers

Vapor pressure determinations in a vacuum line were made first on varied compositions of acetone and pyridine and second on varied compositions of acetone and trimethylamine. These experiments were conducted in the hope of noting a negative deviation from Raoult's Law, which is indicative of adduct formation between the two substances. No such deviation was found in either case. Vapor pressure determinations were then made on varied compositions of 1) acetone and chloroform, 2) 4-heptanone and chloroform, 3) dicyclopropyl ketone and chloroform, and 4) diisopropyl ketone and chloroform. In each of these systems a negative deviation from Raoult's Law was …

Relative Donor Properties Of Various Propyl Ketones In Iodine Solution Using Spectroscopic Methods, Christine Franchi May 1969

Relative Donor Properties Of Various Propyl Ketones In Iodine Solution Using Spectroscopic Methods, Christine Franchi

Senior Scholar Papers

Ketones in iodine solution are capable of transferring a nonbonding electron from the carbonyl oxygen to a halogen molecule forming a charge transfer complex. The electron-repelling nature of alkyl groups on either side of the carbonyl contributes to electron density and makes the ketone a better donor. The equilibrium constant of complex formation is an experimental measure of relative donor basicity and a theoretical measure of inductive effects. This study has determined that (1) the difference in inductive nature between a n-propyl and a methyl group is apparently negligible and (2) equilibrium constants may not be correlated with inductive effects …
