Electron-Impact Lonization Cross Section In Cesium, Kaare J. Nygaard Jan 1968

Electron-Impact Lonization Cross Section In Cesium, Kaare J. Nygaard

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The total ionization due to the passage of an electron beam in cesium vapor has been measured with a Tate and Smith-type apparatus. The retarding potential difference method was used in the electron gun to obtain energy resolution better than 0.1 eV. The density of Cs atoms was determined from the Taylor and Langmuir formula and also measured with a surface-ionization detector. The two methods gave the same density to within ±3% when the apparatus was in thermodynamic equilibrium with the Cs reservoir. The cross section for production of Cs+ has been determined from threshold to 100 eV. For energies …

Ökologie, Systematik Und Verbreitung Zweier In Norddeutschland Sympatrisch Lebender Bathynella-Arten (Crustacea, Syncarida), Siegfried Husmann Jan 1968

Ökologie, Systematik Und Verbreitung Zweier In Norddeutschland Sympatrisch Lebender Bathynella-Arten (Crustacea, Syncarida), Siegfried Husmann

International Journal of Speleology

The sympatric occurrence of two bathynellids previously considered races of Bathynella natans - natans and stammeri - is evaluated as a natural ecological-genetic experiment. Since no hybrids appear in mixed populations, these forms are proven to be full species: Bathynella natans Vejdovsky and Bathynella stammeri (Jakobi). Besides the form of the mandibles, which until now was the only taxonomically useful diagnostic character in the genus Bathynella, 7 additional, suitably applicable morphological characters have been found (Table 3). The Bathynella biotope investigated is assigned to the “eustygopsammal” subterranean life province (Husmann 1966), which is associated with the “Parastenocaris-Bathynella” …

A Development Of Regression Models For Predicting Temperature, Salinity And Sound Velocity In Sea Water, Darwin Wayne Brown Jan 1968

A Development Of Regression Models For Predicting Temperature, Salinity And Sound Velocity In Sea Water, Darwin Wayne Brown

Masters Theses

"There are in existence today some reasonably good numerical procedures for predicting sound velocity, but these procedures require that certain initial data such as temperature and salinity be given before a sound velocity may be computed. Eliminating the need for on-location observations of temperature and salinity, which are used in computing sound velocity, was the primary objective of this study. Stepwise multiple regression was applied in the search for suitable models to predict temperature and salinity, and ultimately sound entirely in terms of controllable variables, such as latitude, longitude, depth, and day-of-year"--Abstract, page ii.

Magnetic After-Effects In Dilute Transition Metal Alloys, Robert Henry Graham Jan 1968

Magnetic After-Effects In Dilute Transition Metal Alloys, Robert Henry Graham

Masters Theses

"Temperature dependent after-effects of the initial permeability in ternary dilute ferromagnetic iron-base alloys were studied in the temperature range of -50°C to +30°C. Interstitial carbon and nitrogen were the diffusing elements. Nominal percentages of the substitutional transition elements manganese, chromium, vanadium and titanium were added to determine the extent of substitutional-interstitial pair interactions. No additional temperature dependent after-effect of the initial permeability was noticed in Fe- substitutional -C alloys, while such after-effects were present in Fe- substitutional -N alloys. Magnetic after-effect data were analyzed on the basis of single Debye relaxations. Relaxation times for carbon and nitrogen diffusion in alpha-iron …

Ecological Relationships Of Wetlands To Ring-Necked Pheasants In Nebraska, William L. Baxter, Carl W. Wolfe

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Ecological relationships of ring-necked pheasants with rainwater basins were studied on a nine-section study area in south-central Nebraska.

Nesting studies conducted from 1960 through 1964 revealed the importance of vegetation complexes associated with wetlands as nesting cover. During the five-year period, 25 percent of all nests were initiated in this covertype, and 25 percent of all chicks were produced in this covertype. The wetlands also provided high quality brooding, loafing, roosting, and winter cover.

Human activities have destroyed 83 percent of the 3,909 wetlands in the rain basin area. The greatest loss occurred in smaller basins. Acreages in the basins …

The Bethe-Weizsäcker Mass Formula And Lennard-Jones N-N Potentials, James Paul Wesley, Alex E.S. Green Jan 1968

The Bethe-Weizsäcker Mass Formula And Lennard-Jones N-N Potentials, James Paul Wesley, Alex E.S. Green

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An elementary derivation of the Bethe-Weizscker semiempirical nuclear mass formula which is in the spirit of current views of nuclear structure, is given. Lennard-Jones potentials are assumed to act between nuclear. Thus, the major interaction between nn, pp, and np pairs is taken of the form —g/r3+h/r4, where r is the separation distance between nuclear, and g and h are constants. An additional "symmetry" interaction of the form s/r3 is assumed for np pairs. Summing the potential energy over all nucleon pairs and using the Fermi statistical estimate of the kinetic energy, the Bethe-Weizscker semiempirical mass formula is obtained directly. …

Cyclic Derivatives Of 2-Amino-2-Deoxy-D-Hexopyranoses, Kenji Miyai Jan 1968

Cyclic Derivatives Of 2-Amino-2-Deoxy-D-Hexopyranoses, Kenji Miyai

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to prepare heterocyclic derivatives, bridging C-2 and C-3 of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-hexopyranoses, useful as blocking groups in the preparation of aminosugar oligosaccharides and polysaccharides. The work reported herein is concerned with oxazolidones of 2-amino-2-deoxy-D-hexopyranoses (Figure 1).)

There are no examples known, in which five or six-membered rings are fused in a trans-arrangement to five-membered furanose ring. However, although synthetic difficulties were observed, sic and five-membered rings were fused in a trans-arrangement to a sic-membered pyranose ring as pointed out before. In the case of our trans-diequatorially fused oxazolidones additional preparative difficulties were expected, because of the …

Determination Of Flow Curves From Capillary Rise Rate Measurements, Richard Lehr Kissling Jan 1968

Determination Of Flow Curves From Capillary Rise Rate Measurements, Richard Lehr Kissling

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The measurement of viscosity is a common and useful technique for investigating the mechanical behavior of many real fluids. Theoretical interpretations of viscosity measurements have been important in attempts to elucidate fundamental properties of the liquid state. Brush (6) and Bondi (3) give reviews of the current status of attempts to construct theories of liquid viscosity, and it is quite apparent from these reviews that the molecular theory of rheological phenomena is in its infancy.

In addition to the fundamental aspects of viscometry, there are many practical applications to which viscosity measurements are directed (25). One has only to scan …

Current Density-Anodic Potential Curves Of Single Crystal Gaas At Low Currents In Koh, Martin E. Straumanis, J. P. Krumme, William Joseph James

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Single p-type, GaAs crystals of high purity, Zn doped, were used to determine whether or not the inverse octahedral {111} faces show potential differences and various rates of anodic dissolution. The Ga{111}, As{111}, {110}, and {100} faces, were polished, etched, and etch-polished with concentrated H2SO4 + H2O2, and immersed in IN KOH. The Ga{111} faces were found to be the most noble with respect to rest and anodic dissolution potentials. The potential difference between the inverse {111} faces was as large as 0.14v for the rest and 0.123v for the dissolution potentials. The …

Electrocapillary Studies Of Reversible Charge Transfer V(Iii)/V(Ii) Electrode, Mohammad Ali Akhtar Jan 1968

Electrocapillary Studies Of Reversible Charge Transfer V(Iii)/V(Ii) Electrode, Mohammad Ali Akhtar

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Electrocapillary equation for an ideal polarized electrode based on Gibb's adsorption equation is appropriately recast into experimentally measurable quantities in order to apply it to a reversible charge transfer electrode.

To calculate the various parameters of the equation developed, experimental details were worked out. For the measurement of Current-time relationship of a single drop, a fast response potentiostat was built by using transistorized chopped stabilized operational amplifiers and precision components in the circuitry with proper compensation for IR-drop in the cell and the electrical double layer capacity. The analysis of I-t curves was done by taking into account the composite …

The Function And Use Of Sulphur Dioxide In West Australian Winemaking, D Mann Jan 1968

The Function And Use Of Sulphur Dioxide In West Australian Winemaking, D Mann

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE judicious use of sulphur dioxide is perhaps the most important of the fundamentals of winemaking in a hot climate.

Western Australia's vintage, centred in the Swan Valley just a few miles north-east of Perth, is subjected to some of the highest summer temperatures experienced by a quality wine producing district.

In this environment, it is important to make good use of sulphur dioxide to avoid wine spoilage.

It is one purpose of this dissertation to introduce a facile method for the preparation of β glycosides of D-glucose and D-allose.

It is the second purpose of this dissertation to investigate the preparation of 2-oxazolidinones forming a bridge between C2 and C3 of allopyranose. This preparation, along with the facile preparation of β-benzyl glycosides of D-glucosamine and D-allosamine, should lead to compounds which, in a few steps, can conceivably be used for coupling at positions 1 and 4.

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Making Radiometric Titrations Of Precipitation Reactions, Harold Elmore Hammerstrom Jan 1968

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Making Radiometric Titrations Of Precipitation Reactions, Harold Elmore Hammerstrom

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present work was to (1) determine the feasibility of performing radiometric titrations using low activity radioisotopes and inexpensive equipment; (2) develop a workable procedure for performing ·radiometric titrations in the classroom; and (3) assemble the basic radioactive concepts needed so the content could be used in a chemistry course of study.

The limited work done previously with radiometric titrations has used solutions of high specific activity and relatively large volumes of solution. The use of high activity radioisotopes creates problems of radioisotope procurement, shielding, handling and disposal. The use of high activity radioisotopes required special training …
