An Experimental Determination Of The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water Vapor In Argon And Helium, Louis Benton Allen Jan 1968

An Experimental Determination Of The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water Vapor In Argon And Helium, Louis Benton Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

"An expansion type cloud chamber was used to measure the nucleation rate of water vapor in an atmosphere of helium and argon. A careful study was made of the thermodynamic characteristics during the expansion so that the nucleation data could be interpreted with reasonable accuracy and consistency. A fine wire thermocouple was used to measure the gas temperature during the course of an isentropic expansion in the dry chamber. When the finite heat capacity of the thermocouple is accounted for, it is found that there is almost perfect agreement with the temperature calculated from the equation of state and the …

The Lifetime And Effective Quenching Cross Section Of The 6²P₃/₂ State Of Thallium, Robert Charles Pickett Jan 1968

The Lifetime And Effective Quenching Cross Section Of The 6²P₃/₂ State Of Thallium, Robert Charles Pickett

Doctoral Dissertations

"The measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 6²P₃/₂ state of thallium is discussed. Measurement of time varying optical absorption by time sampling techniques is explained for the study of the decay of the metastable atom concentration following a pulsed radio frequency discharge. The decay of the thallium radiation from optically allowed states terminating on the metastable state is measured at nine different thallium densities in the afterglow of the discharge. This radiation repopulates the metastable state and is displayed on an oscilloscope. The metastable lifetime is measured as a function of the thallium density at three different r-f power …

Electronic Transitions In Diatomic Molecules, James O. Hornkohl Jan 1968

Electronic Transitions In Diatomic Molecules, James O. Hornkohl

Masters Theses

"The electronic transition moments of many band systems have been found to be linear functions of the internuclear distance. However, some band systems exhibit a quadratic variation of the transition moment. In these quadratic cases, the plots from which the variation of the transition moment is determined are based upon the approximation of the second r-centroid by the square of the first r-centroid. The square of the first r-centroid does closely approximate the second r-centroid by a simple error analysis shows that the small difference between the two is not a quantitative measure of the error introduced into the transition …

A Study Of Succinic Dehydrogenase, Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase, Nitrate Reductase And Cytochrome C Reductase In Hygrophorus Conicus, Jagdish M. Mehta Jan 1968

A Study Of Succinic Dehydrogenase, Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase, Nitrate Reductase And Cytochrome C Reductase In Hygrophorus Conicus, Jagdish M. Mehta

Doctoral Dissertations

"The activity of the enzyme succinic dehydrogenase (succinate : phenazine methosulfate oxidoreductase, EC 1.3.99.1) of Hygrophorus conicus, a member of a class of fungi known as basidiomycetes, was found to be stimulated by nitrate. Two substances were tested as electron acceptors in the measurement of succinic dehydrogenase activity. Of the two substances tried, phenazine methosulfate and brilliant cresyl blue, the former was found to be the best. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) was a necessary cofactor for the enzyme and could be readily dissociated from the enzyme. The enzyme has the properties of a high molecular weight nucleo- or lipoprotein.

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson Jan 1968

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations

"A High-Resolution Velocity Analysis (HRVA) has been developed for the determination of the root-mean-square subsurface-velocity energy spectrum from gated seismic data which has been normal-moveout corrected. All calculations are performed in the frequency-space or frequency-wavenumber domain; seismic gates are transformed from the time-space domain via the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. HRVA is not restricted to the investigation of apparent horizontal velocities which have associated stepout values that are integral multiples of the time sampling interval, as are the existing correlation techniques. The technique liberally exploits the inexistence of significant energy in the higher frequency harmonies of seismic data, resulting in …

Inferences On The Parameters Of The Weibull Distribution, Darrel Ray Thoman Jan 1968

Inferences On The Parameters Of The Weibull Distribution, Darrel Ray Thoman

Doctoral Dissertations

"For the most part, solutions to the problems of making inferences about the parameters in the Weibull distribution have been limited to providing simple estimators of the parameters. Little has been known about the properties of the estimators. In this paper the small and moderate sample size properties of the maximum likelihood estimators are studied and their superiority is established. The problem of making further inferences which are based on the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters is then considered. The inferences that are presented can be divided into those based on a single sample and those based on two …

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick Jan 1968

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanical breakage of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) due to the action of acoustic transients has been investigated. The acoustic transients were produced by transient heating of a Prussian blue dye solution (attenuation coefficient of 1000 per cm) when a ruby laser light (20 x 106 watts) was incident on the dye surface. A quartz piezoelectric transducer was used to determine the amplitude and form of the acoustic wave. The production of acoustic waves by transient heating is discussed, and the theoretical form of the acoustic wave determined for various boundary and initial conditions are compared to the experimentally …

Synthesis And Properties Of Diorganomagnesium Compounds, Conrad William Kamienski Dec 1967

Synthesis And Properties Of Diorganomagnesium Compounds, Conrad William Kamienski

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: Although dialkylmagnesium compounds have been known for over a hundred years, relatively little effort has been directly expended on these reagents per se; much of what we know about magnesium alkyls has been an outgrowth of previous studies concerned with the nature of the Grignard reagent. Only recently has any effort been made to elaborate on methods for preparing these reagents, to determine carefully their physical and chemical properties, and to develop practical uses for these reagents. It has been the purpose of the present study to review the presently known methods of preparation of dialkylmagnesium compounds, to …

Strong-Coupled Piezoelectric Polaron, Wayne E. Tefft Dec 1967

Strong-Coupled Piezoelectric Polaron, Wayne E. Tefft

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A semiclassical, variational calculation for the strong-coupled piezoelectric polaron gives the following results for the ground-state energy and polaron radius, respectively: U0=-0.47(m*/m) (κ2/ε)2eV, and R=3.5(ε/κ2) (m/m*)â ã where m* is the band effective mass, κ is the electromechanical coupling constant, and ε is the strain-free dielectric constant. The theory is expected to be valid when |U0| is larger than thermal energies and R is considerably larger than unit-cell dimensions. A calculation of the polaron effective mass, having a more limited region of validity, gives mp~m*[1+2|U0|/m*vs2], where vs is the velocity of sound. …

A Study Of The Removal Of Pesticides From Water, James David Whitehouse Dec 1967

A Study Of The Removal Of Pesticides From Water, James David Whitehouse

KWRRI Research Reports

The purpose of this study was to investigate some of the properties of pesticides as they exist in water, and to determine the effectiveness of several water treatment processes in the removal of pesticides from water. Among the pesticides investigated were malathion, DDT, aldrin, dieldrin, captan, benzene hexachloride (BHC), 2,4-D, and 2,4,5-T. The water treatment processes included aeration, chemical coagulation, adsorption on activated carbons and clays, and foam separation.

The removal of pesticides from water by aeration was found to be significant. Dieldrin was removed almost 100 percent, while aldrin, DDT, and BHC were removed to a lesser extent. 2, …

Hyperfine-Structure Separations, Nuclear Magnetic Moments, And Hyperfine-Structure Anomalies Of Gold-198 And Gold-199, Paul A. Vanden Bout, Vernon J. Ehlers, William A. Nierenberg, Howard A. Shugart Dec 1967

Hyperfine-Structure Separations, Nuclear Magnetic Moments, And Hyperfine-Structure Anomalies Of Gold-198 And Gold-199, Paul A. Vanden Bout, Vernon J. Ehlers, William A. Nierenberg, Howard A. Shugart

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

We have measured the hyperfine-structure separations and nuclear magnetic moments of (2.70-day) Au198 and (3.15-day) Au199 in the S122 state, using the atomic-beam magnetic-resonance method. We also measured the ratios of the electronic g factor of gold to those of potassium and cesium. The results are, for Au198 (I=2), Δν=21450.7167(4) MHz, μI(uncorr)=+0.5842(4) nm; and for Au199 (I=32), Δν=10962.7227(3) MHz, μI(uncorr)=+0.2673(7) nm. The results for the g-factor ratios are: gJ(Au)gJ(K)=1.000504(2) and gJ(Au)gJ(Cs)=1.000381(2). These values yield the following hyperfine-structure anomalies: Δ198197=8.53(8)% and Δ199197=3.7(2)%. Second-order corrections to the hyperfine structure are shown to be negligible. The nuclear results are interpreted in terms of …

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Methane In The Marine Environment, Larry P. Atkinson, Francis A. Richards Dec 1967

The Occurrence And Distribution Of Methane In The Marine Environment, Larry P. Atkinson, Francis A. Richards

CCPO Publications

The distributions of methane dissolved in the sulfide-bearing waters of the Black Sea, the Cariaco Trench, and Lake Nitinat are reported. The gas was not detected in the oxygen-deficient water of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, in the Santa Barbara Basin, nor in the sulfide-bearing water of Saanich Inlet. Maximum concentrations observed were 70 μmole CH4/l., and the distribution tends to follow that of sulfide. The data indicate that methane is derived from organic compounds not containing nitrogen or phosphorus and that its formation is much slower than that of sulfide. The solubility coefficient in seawater (salinity = 40‰) is …

An Examination Of The Romberg Method For Numerical Integration, Water James Halpin Nov 1967

An Examination Of The Romberg Method For Numerical Integration, Water James Halpin

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

INTRODUCTION

This paper will amount to an inquiry into the mathematical structure and properties of a matrix of approximate integration formulas due to Werner Romberg 1 which have found considerable favor in numerical analysis during the past decade. Like other devices for approximate integration the Romberg method has its origin in the exhaustion techniques developed by the Greeks for determining the areas of figures enclosed by lines in the plane. It is particularly closely associated with the scheme employed by Archimedes2 (circa 250 B.C.) for approximating the value of [3.14]. This involves a doubling process which is essentially the basis …

Water Quality Study Of Lake Mead, Dale A. Hoffman, Paul R. Tramutt, Frank C. Heller, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

This report presents Lake Mead Water quality data obtained from 1964 to 1966. The effect of filling Lake Powell on the water quality of Lake Mead is evaluated. General limnological principles and the present limnology of Lake Mead are discussed. Lake Mead has a warm monomictic annual temperature cycle characterized by summer stratification, fall overturn leading into a continuous circulation throughout the winter; temperatures never fall below 39 deg F (4 deg C). During stratification, lower dissolved oxygen values were recorded in the thermocline than in the epilimnion and hypolimnion. Mineral content increases from the upper to the lower end …

Survival Probability In Dissociative Attachment, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher Nov 1967

Survival Probability In Dissociative Attachment, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The survival probability in dissociative attachment is investigated with special attention to the (e, H2 ) system. It is shown that the simple expression for the dissociative-attachment cross section, as given by the product of a capture cross section and a survival probability, is equivalent to the s -wave approximation for the g → g dissociative attachment. This expression, however, does not constitute an approximation for the g → u dissociative attachment, since the parity of the initial rotational states of H2 is always opposite to that of the relative angular momentum states of H and H- …

A Study Of The Synthesis And Reactions Of Condensed Pyriadazines, Lorraine Marie Distefano Oct 1967

A Study Of The Synthesis And Reactions Of Condensed Pyriadazines, Lorraine Marie Distefano

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A special interest in a nitramine rearrangement prompted the preparation of 1,4-diaminopyridazino [4,5-d] pyridazine and the nitration of this compound. Several reactions of the intermediates, which were synthesized en route to 1,4-diaminopyridazino [4,5-d] pyridazine, were studied. Strong evidence for the existence of keto-enol tautomerism was found in the case of 1,4-dihydroxypyridazino [4,5-d] pyridazine and its derivatives.

Some reactions of 5, 8-dichloropyrazino [2,3-d] pyridazine were studied with particular interest in the nucleophilic displacement of azides and in the nitration of 5,8-dianilinopyrazino [2,3-d] pyridazine.

The nitration of diaminophthalazine was also attempted in order to perform an acid catalyzed nitramine rearrangement from one …
