The Brule-Gering (Oligocene-Miocene) Contact In The Wildcat Ridge Area Of Western Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Charles H. Falkenbach, Carl F. Vondra
The Brule-Gering (Oligocene-Miocene) Contact In The Wildcat Ridge Area Of Western Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Charles H. Falkenbach, Carl F. Vondra
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
The contact between the Brule Formation (Oligocene) and the Gering Formation (Miocene) can be readily distinguished in the Wildcat Ridge area, as elsewhere in western Nebraska. At the critical fossiliferous exposures at Castle Rock in Scotts Bluff County, the contact on the south face between the two formations is defined as 129 feet above the base of the "Upper Ash" bed, which corresponds to the upper portion of Darton's (1899, PI. C, Fig. D, following p. 754) "sandy phase" in the upper part of the Brule. Certain key beds in the Gering Formation can be traced laterally from a channel …

A New Species Of Rhinoceros, Aphelops Kimballensis, From The Latest Pliocene Of Nebraska, Lloyd G. Tanner
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum
An uncrushed skull and associated skeletal elements of a very large rhinoceros are the basis for the description of a new species of Aphelops from Frontier County, Nebraska. The major differences are: the skull is much larger in most dimensions than other Aphelops; it has an extremely elevated occipital region in comparison to Aphelops mutilus; the narial notch is retracted to a point perpendicular to the center of molar one; and the teeth are more hypsodont than any other species of this genus. The sediments which yielded the skull and skeletal parts are considered to be Kimballian in …

The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James
The Mechanism Of The Electrooxidation Of Acetylene On Gold, James W. Johnson, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Acetylene has been oxidized anodically in aqueous solutions at 80 °C on gold electrodes. It was found that the partial oxidation to CO2 was accompanied by a polymer formation. Effects of potential, acetylene partial pressure, pH, and temperature on the rate (current) were measured. A discontinuity in the Tafel curves was noted that indicated a change in the reaction mechanism with potential. The discontinuity was also pH dependent. A mechanism involving the discharge of H2O and/or OH− has been proposed that is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. All rights reserved.
The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James
The Anodic Dissolution Of Cadmium, James W. Johnson, E. Deng, S. C. Lai, William Joseph James
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The anodic dissolution of cadmium has been studied in aqueous solutions containing Cl−, Br−, I−, Ac−, SO4=, and NO3− ions. The normal valence (+2) was found in all solutions with the exception of NO3−. The apparent valence (calculated) of cadmium ions in nitrate solutions varied from 1.2 to 2.0 and was found to be a function of NO3− concentration, current density, and temperature. An anodic dissolution mechanism has been proposed involving local corrosion and disintegration of the anode which is consistent with the experimental results. © 1967, The Electrochemical Society, Inc. The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin
The Effect Of Concentration On The Viscosities Of Solutions Of Linear Flexible High Polymers, Lung Yu Chou, Jacques L. Zakin
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Viscosity-concentration results in the moderately concentrated range for four samples of polyisobutylene (molecular weights of 1.3 x 104 to 1.0 x 106) in cyclohexane (concentrations up to 4.7 g./dl.) and in benzene (concentrations up to 7.0 g./dl.) at 24°C. (a theta solvent) showed molecular weight and goodness of solvent dependencies similar to those reported earlier for three other polymers. For polyisobutylene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of styrene and methyl methaerylate in good solvents, viscosity-concentration data plotted as ηsp. C[η] vs. k′[η]C fit a single curve. The linear region of this curve suggests that the Huggins equation is useful to C[η] …
Palladium And Platinum Complexes Of Substituted Cycloolefins, Gerald Brady Mccauley
Palladium And Platinum Complexes Of Substituted Cycloolefins, Gerald Brady Mccauley
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Much of the fundamental work on complexation of cycloolefins by platinum metals has been laid down by several workers and ranges from complexes of butadiene those of cyclododecatriene. The work here was chiefly a continuation of research on cycloolefin complexes which appear in papers by Kuljian and Frye (30,31,44). Most of this work on the complexes of cyclic seven, eight, and twelve carbon ligands was repeated here to insure a more complete laboratory background and for verification of previously reported literature data on these compounds. These compounds were used a s basis for comparison to original compounds developed in the …
Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James
Anodic Dissolution Of Zinc In Potassium Nitrate, Martin E. Straumanis, J. L. Reed, William Joseph James
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The apparent valence of pure zinc dissolving anodically in 3% KNO3 was determined as a function of current density, temperature, and ultrasonic agitation. The apparent valence of zinc dissolving anodically at 24°C diminishes from 2.01 ± 0.01 at low current densities to 1.86 at about 50 ma and remains fairly constant up to about 80 ma cm−2. This valence is affected to some extent by the preparation, e.g., polishing of the electrode, but is independent of its structure (mono- or polycrystal). Ultrasonic vibrations do not influence the apparent valence at high current densities. In all cases a black film …

The Effects Of Shearing Time And Stocking Rate On Wool Production, R J. Lightfoot
The Effects Of Shearing Time And Stocking Rate On Wool Production, R J. Lightfoot
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE results of the first experiment comparing "autumn" versus "spring" shearing over a two-year period were published in 1960.
In this experiment the autumn-shorn ewes cut heavier greasy fleeces (even though they also reared considerably more lambs) with less tender wool, resulting in a higher average return per head from this group.
The autumn-shorn wool carried more seed, was less attractive and contained relatively more pieces than did the spring-shorn wool.

Phalaris Staggers : Prevention By Cobalt Bullets, Bryan J. Gorddard, P. P. Mann, A. J. Hadlow
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
FARMERS in the south west of Western Australia are familiar with the use of cobalt for the prevention of ill-thrift and deaths due to cobalt deficiency in sheep and cattle.
Less common is the use of cobalt for the prevention of chronic phalaris poisoning, known as phalaris staggers.
This condition is well known in eastern Australia, but only isolated cases have been recorded in W.A. no doubt due to the relatively small area sown to phalaris in this state.

Feasibility Study Of A Capacitance-Type Electronic Sediment-Sensing Device, C. Earl Israelsen, Duane G. Chadwick
Feasibility Study Of A Capacitance-Type Electronic Sediment-Sensing Device, C. Earl Israelsen, Duane G. Chadwick
Reports
Difficulties caused by sediment carried in natural streams have existed since earliest times. Although instruments and techniques for measuring stream discharge have existed for many years, only recently have attempts been made to measure sediment carried by the streams. The earliest observations of sediment discharge in the United States were made by Captain Talcott in the Mississippi River in 1838 (1). More or less continuous samples of sediment from the Rio Grande have been collected by the United States Geological Survey since 1879, and from the Colorado River Basin since 1925. Studies of sediment transport are seriously hampered by the …

A Study Of The Formation Of Cyclic Allenes From 2,3-Dibromocycloalkenes, Michael John Millam
A Study Of The Formation Of Cyclic Allenes From 2,3-Dibromocycloalkenes, Michael John Millam
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This investigation was undertaken in an attempt to form strained cyclic allenes and to study their chemistry. The method chosen for the attempted formation of strained cyclic allenes was the determination of the corresponding 2,3-dibromocycloalkene. 2,3-Dibromocyclononene was synthesized during the course of this investigation so that its debromination to the 1,2-cyclononadiene, which is the smallest stable, 1,2-cycloalkadiene, could be studies as model for the debromination of smaller 2,3-dibromocycloalkenes was initiated. The formation of 1,2-cyclohexadiene was attempted by the debromination of the 2,3-dibromocyclohexene. Evidence for the presence of this unstable intermediate was sought via the use of trapping agents.

Synthesis Of N-Methyl-D-Gulosamine And Methyl Ethers Of N-Methyl-D-Gulosamine, Hazrat Mohammed Noorzad
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
A great variety of amino sugars has been found in antibiotics among these D-gulosamine in the striptomyces group. In the same group, .an N-methylated amino-sugar, N-methyl-L~ glucosamine has been isolated. Although N-methyl-0-gulosamine .has not been found in nature until now, its ultimate discovery would not be surprising in this context. In the present work this amino-sugar and some important derivatives are prepared for the first time, starting from D-glucosamine, a pure benzyl· 3-0-acetyl-2-benzyloxycarbonylamido-2-deoxy-~-D-glucopyranoside (X) was obtained by a series of kno~n processes. Benzyl 3-0-acetyl~-methylsulfonyl-2-deoxy-~-D-glucopyranoside (XIII) and some of its derivatives were obtaine.d from (X). An attempt was made to obtain …

The Synthesis Of Methyl-2-Acetamido-3,4,6-0-Triacetyl Alpha-D-Talosaminide, Mohammad Saleem Choudhary
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Amongst the very many different kinds of amino sugars, theones that have aroused the most interest are the 2-amino 2-deoxy hexoses which are found in such well known antibiotics as streptomycin and neomycine (2). There are so far about forty-three antibiotics which are known to contain different aminosugars (6).
Aminosugars exhibit the same properties as other reducing aldohexoses, e. g. reduction of silver and cupric salts, oxidation to hexonic acids, reduction to alcohols and formation of glycosides.
The object of this project is to synthesize methyl N-acetyl α-D-talosaminide which has previously been prepared by Jeanloz (3) following a different route. …
