Thermochemistry Of Cyclophanes, Chyi-Feng Shieh May 1965

Thermochemistry Of Cyclophanes, Chyi-Feng Shieh

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The syntheses and properties of various cyclophanes have been extensively investigated by Cram and others. The paracyclophanes are compounds in which benzene rings are linked to each other by two saturated chains at the para positions, as in structure I. When they are joined to the meta positions, they are called metacyclophanes.

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of The Reaction Of Molybdenum(V) With Iodine, Oxygen And Nitrate, Ervin Park Guymon May 1965

The Kinetics And Mechanism Of The Reaction Of Molybdenum(V) With Iodine, Oxygen And Nitrate, Ervin Park Guymon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Molybdenum compounds present a series of baffling chemical puzzles. By no means are all of these yet even clearly defined and many may never be. This complexity results from the ability of molybdenum to form six different oxidation states, which can possess three different coordination numbers. Furthermore, molybdenum compounds readily disproportionate to yield mixed valence compounds; and finally, molybdate ions readily aggregate in solution to form a variety of polyions by polymerization-condensation reactions which are controlled by pH and the concentration of the system. Molybdenum's complexity can best be summed up in the words of the late Edgar Smith who …

A Comparative Study Of Discomfort Experienced By Surgical Patients On Three Selected Postoperative Days, Lillian Barker Bartlett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. Findings indicated that nineteen or 56 per cent of the thirty-four patients interviewed stated that the second day was most uncomfortable, nine or 27 per cent the third and six or 17 per cent the …

Thermodynamics Of Charge Transfer Complexes, Reed J. Jensen May 1965

Thermodynamics Of Charge Transfer Complexes, Reed J. Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

Charge transfer complexes were studied spectrophotometrically in the liquid state by a modified Benesi-Hildabrand method. TiCl_4 - Benzene and TiCl_4 - diphenyl ether solutions were found to form contact charge transfer complexes, that is complexes with very weak and non-directional interactions. The systems TiCl_4 - anisole and TiCl_4 - diethyl ether form complexes of the types AD and AD_2 where A stands for TiCl_4 and D stand s for the organic donor. The formation constants for the complexes were, for the TiCl_4 - anisole, K_1 = 0.077, K_2 = 0.01; and TiCl_4 - diethyl ether, K_1= 3.0, K_2 = 1.0. …

A Device For Holding Objects In The Stomachs Of Fish, Earl R. Kendle, Earl R. Kendle, Larry A. Morris

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Studies were initiated in 1962 which involved holding objects in the stomachs of fish for extended periods of time. To accomplish this, it was necessary to construct a device which would withstand regurgitating actions without inflicting injury, and would not disrupt the normal behavior of the fish. This device consisted of a plastic rod that was attached to the isthmus of the fish and extended down the gullet into the stomach.

Age And Growth Of The River Carpsucker, Carpiodes Carpio, In The Missouri River, Larry A. Morris Apr 1965

Age And Growth Of The River Carpsucker, Carpiodes Carpio, In The Missouri River, Larry A. Morris

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The river carpsucker, Carpiodes carpio, was collected in the Missouri River bordering eastern Nebraska in 1961 and 1962. During and preceding the study period the course of the river was being altered to promote commercial barge traffic. These alterations resulted in numerous cutoff lakes and chutes many of which were left open to the river at their downstream ends. Collections were made both here and in the river channel. Age and growth data from collections in the cutoff lakes and chutes were combined, while age and growth determinations were made separately for fish from the main stream. The differences …

A Thermodynamic Study Of (1) Ligand Replacement Reactions And (2) The Interaction Of Hgcl[Subscript 2](Aq) With Hydroxide Ion, Ethylenediamine, Glycinate Ion, And Methylamine, Jerry Alvin Partridge Apr 1965

A Thermodynamic Study Of (1) Ligand Replacement Reactions And (2) The Interaction Of Hgcl[Subscript 2](Aq) With Hydroxide Ion, Ethylenediamine, Glycinate Ion, And Methylamine, Jerry Alvin Partridge

Theses and Dissertations

A method is reported for determining the species formed in solution by ligand replacement reactions. Reactions in dilute aqueous solution were studied in which the Cl^- on HgCl_2(aq) was replaced by hydroxide ion, ethylenediamine, glycinate ion, and methylamine. The species formed by the replacement reactions were established through computer analysis of pH titration data. Various reaction sequences were proposed for each system and log K values were calculated for each sequence. The selection of the correct reaction sequence for each system was based on the premise that only when the correct sequence is proposed will consistent log K values be …

Hydrogenation Of 4-Methylcinnoline, William E. Maycock Mar 1965

Hydrogenation Of 4-Methylcinnoline, William E. Maycock

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid expansion of knowledge of cinnoline chemistry since 1941 has not included the hydrocinnolines. Not one catalytic hydrogenation of a fully aromatic cinnoline had been reported. This thesis is an effort to enlarge knowledge of this particular area of cinnoline chemistry. The work is a natural outgrowth of that done at Brigham Young University on decahydroquinoxaline, both the cis- and trans- isomers having been prepared and characterized. 4-Methylcinnoline, prepared by the method of Jacobs, et.al., was hydrogenated in neutral and acidic ethanolic solutions at 2000-3000 psig. hydrogen pressure and 100-266°. The catalysts used were 5% palladium on alumina, ruthenium …

Regulation Of Pheasant Density Through Nest Abandonment In South-Central Nebraska, Raymond L. Linder, C. Phillip Agee Mar 1965

Regulation Of Pheasant Density Through Nest Abandonment In South-Central Nebraska, Raymond L. Linder, C. Phillip Agee

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

In a five-year study of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) in south-central Nebraska, Linder, Lyon and Agee (1960) proposed that "the quality of nesting environment determines the number of nests which will be successful in a given year; this regulates total production which in turn determines the following year's breeding population." These conclusions were based upon the following findings:

1. A close correlation existed between the number of chicks produced and the number of hens the following spring. Because of this relationship it was concluded that mortality through fall, winter and early spring was relatively constant from year …

Possible Late Pleistocene Uplift, Chesapeake Bay Entrance, W. Harrison, Rj Malloy, Ga Rusnak, J Terasmae

VIMS Articles

Paleontological and lithological studies of engineering borings and boring logs subaerial erosion surface of Pliocene (?)-Pleistocene age cuts across clastic sediments of pre-Yorktownian Miocene age in the subsurface and subbottom of the lower Chesapeake Bay area. When the bore-hole data are coupled with the results of subbottom echo profiling and piledriving records, it is possible to construct accurate cross sections of the buried Miocene-Pleistocene contact. The cross sections show "lows" in the erosion surface that may be correlated with the buried channels of the Pleistocene Elizabeth, James, York, and Susquehanna river valleys. Probable channel depths below mean low water at …

A Note On The Parameters Of Pbib Association Schemes, Dale M. Mesner Feb 1965

A Note On The Parameters Of Pbib Association Schemes, Dale M. Mesner

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In an m-class partially balanced incomplete block (PBIB) design [3], any two distinct treatments are related as first, second, . . . ,or mth associates in accordance with certain rules, and the resulting classification of pairs of treatments is called an association scheme [1], [4]. Parameters, including v, ni, pijk, which depend only on the association relation between treatments and are common to all designs having a given association scheme, are called association scheme parameters. Other parameters, including b, r, k, λi, depend, in addition, on the arrangement of the treatments …
