Make The Best Use Of Your Rainfall, J E. Watson Mar 1953

Make The Best Use Of Your Rainfall, J E. Watson

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Farmers are not always satisfied with the rain that falls on their farms—it is often too little, too much, too soon or too late. However, the farmer has a very great responsibility to make the best use of the rain he gets, and if he gets too much, to see that the excess can flow down to the rivers without causing damage.

Application Of The Polaroid-Land Process To Radiographic Inspection Of Wheat, Max Milner, Robert Katz, M. R. Lee, W. B. Pyle Mar 1953

Application Of The Polaroid-Land Process To Radiographic Inspection Of Wheat, Max Milner, Robert Katz, M. R. Lee, W. B. Pyle

Robert Katz Publications

At a time when the technique of X-ray inspection of grains for internal insect infestation, announced almost two years ago, appears to have gained considerable currency in industries handling and processing grain, there exists the general feeling that these industries would be more receptive to any technique which would even further simplify and expedite the radiographic inspection process. To this end Kansas State College and the Picker X-Ray Corporation have engaged in a cooperative study relating to the application of the Picker-Polaroid photographic process to the determination of internal infestation in grain. This process is based on the principle of …

Contour furrows increase pasture growth

Good pastures on steep slopes will give profitable returns from grazing, and will also reduce erosion risks. Water needed for pasture growth on such slopes must not be allowed to run off and erode lower slopes. The use of contour furrows is a readily applied erosion control measure which can be very effective in increasing the amount of water held and absorbed on steep slopes.

Sunrise And Sunset Times For May-June 1952 Mar 1953

Sunrise And Sunset Times For May-June 1952

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Supplied by the Government Astronomer

Times of sunrise and sunset for every fifth day, are given for a number of towns throughout the State. Times for a town not on the list may be estimated if its position in relation to one or more of the listed towns is known. The times given for sunrise are those of the first appearance of the top edge of the sun over a true horizon; those for sunset give the time of the sun's disappearance below a true horizon. Situation in a valley would make the sun appear to rise later, and on …

Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller Feb 1953

Oil Shales In Montana, Richard N. Miller

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Montana has long been known to have very large resources of coal and oil, and undetermined amounts of oil shale. The reserves of coal and oil have been proven, in part, and have been produced commercially, but not much is known about the extent and apparent value of the oil shales. Under present .conditions, and according to standards set by the United States Bureau of Mines, the shales are not of commercial value. They are, however, a potentially valuable mineral resource, and portions of them will possibly be utilized, although not in the near future.

Stream Pollution, Ruth Patrick Feb 1953

Stream Pollution, Ruth Patrick

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

This paper discusses the various ways in which aquatic organisms may be of use in solving problems associated with waste disposal. Since many state and federal laws set forth that nothing may be discharged that is deleterious to aquatic life, the most expedient way to determine the effect of an effluent is to study the aquatic organisms themselves.

In every river that has not been adversely affected by pollution there is a great variety of aquatic life. These organisms do not represent a great mass of living things, but rather they are organized into an intricately balance systems, often referred …

A Microcoulometric Study Of Adsorption On The Hydrogen Electrode, Ray Douglas Sothern Jan 1953

A Microcoulometric Study Of Adsorption On The Hydrogen Electrode, Ray Douglas Sothern

Master's Theses

Thie work was begun with the intention of studying the adsorption of organic compounds upon the hydrogen electrode. The fact that certain substances, even when present in extremely low concentration, will poison the electrode with which they are in contact shows clearly that these substances must be strongly adsorbed on the electrode surface. The problem or determining the amount absorbed at various concentration, temperatures, and pressures, however, required a method capable of detecting quantities of adsorbate in the ordor of 10-11 moles.

On The Theory Of Head Waves, Patrick Heelan Jan 1953

On The Theory Of Head Waves, Patrick Heelan

Research Resources

When a combined longitudinal and transverse disturbance, diverging from a localized source, strikes a plane boundary between two solid elastic media, several systems of head waves and second order boundary waves are generated, each associated with grazing incidence of one or the other of the reflected or refracted waves. Associated with grazing incidence of P 1 P2, the refracted P-wave, is the head wave system comprising P1P2P1 (the "refracted wave" of seismic prospectors), and P1P2S1 (a transverse head wave) in the upper medium, and P1P2 …

A Survey Of Farm-Game Habitat Restoration Programs In Fifteen States, William H. Marshall Jan 1953

A Survey Of Farm-Game Habitat Restoration Programs In Fifteen States, William H. Marshall

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

For at least twenty years the thinking of wildlife managers has been directed toward the importance of habitat in producing surplus game populations for hunting. The decline or disappearance of game populations - often over considerable areas - following changes in habitat brought about by agricultural, urban, or industrial developments demonstrates clearly the effects of the elimination of desirable habitat. Suitable habitat is basic to the survival of wildlife. Many field observations and experiences, as well as specific data from research, validate this conclusion. Where a harvestable surplus of game cannot be maintained because of changes made by man in …

Aerial Survey Township Areas, Willford L. Miller Jan 1953

Aerial Survey Township Areas, Willford L. Miller

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

In the year 1946, two townships of 36 square miles each were selected for experimental work in aerial censusing. The primary objective was to devise a technique for obtaining complete counts of upland game birds on limited areas during the winter months.

The aerial survey proved to be very satisfactory when snow conditions are right. All available cover must be well filled with snow, with very few bare spots in fields or other parts of the area. The birds tend to congregate on such bare places where it is very difficult to see them from the plane.

In 1951 a …

The Birds Of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada, J. Dewey Soper Jan 1953

The Birds Of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada, J. Dewey Soper

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Riding Mountain National Park is located in southwestern Manitoba within easy reach of important centres of population. From park headquarters at Wasagaming, it is only 140 miles southeast to Winnipeg, 57 miles south to Brandon, 35 miles north to Dauphin, and 102 miles to the International Boundary. Most of the surrounding country is devoted to agriculture.

The total park area approximates 1,148 square miles. Except for restricted tourist areas, it remains in a primitive condition, with unspoiled forests, prairies, streams, and lakes.

Up to the time the area was set aside as a park in 1929, comparatively little was known …

On Rings Of Entire Functions Of Finite Order, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1953

On Rings Of Entire Functions Of Finite Order, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

In an earlier paper, the author showed that if M is any maximal ideal of R, the residue class field R/M is isomorphic with the complex field K. In this paper, under some restrictions, this theorem is extended to the ring Rλ of all entire functions of order no greater than λ, and hence to R*.

On The Prime Ideals Of The Ring Of Entire Functions, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1953

On The Prime Ideals Of The Ring Of Entire Functions, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Let R be the ring of entire functions, and let K be the complex field. In an earlier paper [6], the author investigated the ideal structure of R, particular attention being paid to the maximal ideals. In 1946, Schilling [9, Lemma 5] stated that every prime ideal of R is maximal. Recently, I. Kaplansky pointed out to the author (in conversation) that this statement is false, and constructed a non maximal prime ideal of R (see Theorem 1(a), below). The purpose of the present paper is to investigate these nonmaximal prime ideals and their residue class fields. The author is …
