The nitro-alkyls have been recorded in the literature for many years. The preparation of the lowest completely nitrated hydrocarbon, tetranitromethane, from acetic acid, acetic anhydride, and fuming nitric acid, has been described by Berger. (1) On reaction with liquid ammonia it forms a salt of nitroform (2). Nitroform can be converted into tetranitromethane by dissolving in a heated mixture of fuming nitric and concentrated sulfuric acids (4). The potassium salt of dinitromethane has been prepared by Villiers (3). This method for the formation of chlorobromo dinitromethane was the one used in this work.

It was found that dissolving silicic acid gels on glass surfaces with strong sodium hydroxide, peculiar etching patterns were formed before the gel dissolved. The observation lead to the study of the etching patterns by photographs and other data for it was believed that these patterns would reveal the structure of the gel.

In this investigation a survey of Nebraska soils has been made in order to determine the distribution of the aerobic nonsymbiotic and symbiotic nitrogen fixers of the genera Azotobacter and Rhizobium respectively. In connection with this survey, some of the characteristics of the soils which may bring about this distribution were studied. Up to this time practically no research has been reported on the microflora of the soils of Nebraska. Chromite occurs in Madison County, Montana, in two areas, one three miles southwest of Silver Star, the other five miles southeast of Sheridan. The ore bodies are small, lenticular masses surrounded by metamorphosed sedimentary rocks of the pre-Cambrian Cherry Creek series. The ore was deposited from the hydrothermal solutions which serpentinized the surrounding metamorphic host rocks.

A conspicuous two hundred and fifty foot sandstone of central Montana, known as the Eagle Formation, constitutes part of the some five thousand feet of Cretaceous sediments in the state. It stands out in steep cliffs which stretch for many miles in the outcrop area from Wyoming to Canada.

In this thesis I have tried to determine the suit­able temperature, time and the amount of soda ash and lime needed for the calcining process. The leaching and purification tests were studied experimentally. The earlier process for making chromate from chromite was not the same as is used today. Recent reports from many parts of the United States indicate that the so-called zinc-deficiency disease is wide spread. It affects some varieties of trees in some areas and all varieties in other areas, and occurs from Florida westward to the Pacific coast and northward to the Canadian line. Although the disease is more prevalent in trees, it is also known to affect annual plants.

A recent survey of Utah orchards shows a wide-spread occurrence of little-leaf, a zinc deficiency disease, in fruit trees. The disease was found to be common on the upper sandy soils between Ogden and Salt Lake …

An exhaustive field study of the Cambrian stratigraphy of the northern Wasatch region indicates that in addition to the Blacksmith Fork section there are two complete and better exposed middle and upper sections. Several other good exposures of the lower Middle Cambrian section have been studied in detail. The Spence shale is found to be a member low in the Langston, not the basal member of the Ute. Relative ages of the Spence shale and Ptarmigania faunas have been determined. Other Cambrian faunal zones have been discovered and are discussed. The age of the Quartermaster formation of Oklahoma and Texas has been the subject of some controversy, being variously given as late Permian or Triassic (?). Fossils have not been reported from these beds until the present discovery of a faunule in the lower part of the Doxey shale at the base of the Quartermaster. Three species are recognized, Naticopsis transversus (Beede), Schizodus oklahomensis Beede, and Myalina acutirostris, n. sp. These forms characterize the recently described Whitehorse fauna and indicate close relationship of the enclosing beds with the Whitehorse formation, even though the Quartermaster fossils occur more than a …

The specific need for the present instrument arose out of a consideration of the significant results that might be obtained through a coordination of reliable data on potential gradients under various cloud formations with the accompanying fast motion cloud photographs.
