The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise Jan 1938

The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise

Masters Theses

"The vapor-phase synthesis of organic compounds represents a new field of study which has attracted the attention of investigators only within recent years. However, wide interest is apparent in this field and several processes of commercial importance have already been developed. Hydrolysis is perhaps the newest of all the types of vapor-phase synthesis; the literature consists of little more than a few patents...The vapor-phase hydrolysis of benzene and toluene, therefore, presented an interesting possibility. These two hydrocarbons are considered very stable toward water in the liquid-phase. The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent their stability toward …

Petrographic Analyses Of The Chepultepec Sandstones Of The Norris Reservoir Region, Tennessee, Chilton Eaton Prouty Jan 1938

Petrographic Analyses Of The Chepultepec Sandstones Of The Norris Reservoir Region, Tennessee, Chilton Eaton Prouty

Masters Theses

"The Norris Reservoir is located in northeastern Tennessee, in the Appalachian Valley. It includes all or portions of Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Granger, Knox, and Union counties. The area is shown by the map of Pate I. It is approximately thirty-five miles long in a northeast-southwest direction and about eighteen to twenty miles wide, in a northwest-southeast direction. The area is bounded on the northwest by the Cumberland escarpment and on the southeast by Clinch Mountain. The other boundaries are arbitrarily drawn near the town of Clinton to the southwest and near Tazewell to the northeast"--Introduction. Location and Nature of the …

Oil And Gas Resources, Jackson County, Missouri, Joseph Robinson Clair Jan 1938

Oil And Gas Resources, Jackson County, Missouri, Joseph Robinson Clair

Masters Theses

"The oil and gas production in Jackson County, though rather small, is nevertheless of considerable economic importance. A portion of the county has been rather thoroughly developed but the remainder has had little prospecting. In order to aid further development in the region the Missouri Geological Survey engaged in the mapping of all the known wells in the county as a basis for preparing a structural contour map of the area. In addition, a member of the Survey staff is stationed permanently in Kansas City to give assistance to the operators in the region and to collect the logs of …

The Paleozoic Stratigraphy Of Lorain County, Ohio, Edwin Hugo Wenberg Jan 1938

The Paleozoic Stratigraphy Of Lorain County, Ohio, Edwin Hugo Wenberg

Honors Papers

During the course of the school year 1936-37 spent at Oberlin, which is situated near the center of Lorain County, Ohio, the writer had the opportunity to study the outcrops and to gather records of wells in this area.

A study of the strata of this county is confusing because the same rocks have been described under different formational names. Originally many of these strata were traced northward from type sections in central Ohio or westward from type sections near Cleveland. At a later date many of the strata were reclassified and assigned to formations which had been traced westward …

A Mechanical Analysis Of The Oriskany Sandstone In Northwestern Virginia, Selma G. Hirsh Jan 1938

A Mechanical Analysis Of The Oriskany Sandstone In Northwestern Virginia, Selma G. Hirsh

Honors Papers

The primary purpose of this paper is to present specific data as a means of explaining the sedimentation conditions at the time of deposition of the Oriskany Sandstone. The data were obtained through the use of laboratory methods upon specimens taken from several outcrops in the vicinity of Monterey, Virginia (see Darton's U.S.G.S. folio No. 51). In addition to the presentation of objective results, the author has attempted to make tentative interpretations of them, based primarily upon textural and shape analysis of the sediment. The writer realizes that the investigation is inadequate in many respects, due to lack of time …

A Brief Consideration Of The Different Methods Of Integration, Donald Golden Nov 1937

A Brief Consideration Of The Different Methods Of Integration, Donald Golden

Master's Theses

Any student of mathematics is familiar with the importance of the process of integration. Integration is as fundamental to analysis as the basic principles of the number theory are to arithmetical calculation. Some of the common applications of integration are, finding the distance a falling body has travelled during a particular interval of time; to determine the equation of a curve, given different conditions (such as slope of the curve equal numerically to one-half the abscissa, or some similar problem); motion of a projectile; motion in a resisting medium; finding areas and volumes of revolution; length of a curve; areas …

Determining Fossil Woods (Western Conifers), George F. Beck Oct 1937

Determining Fossil Woods (Western Conifers), George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

In this paper we come to consider the problem of the coniferous woods. One cannot always recognize with certainty that a given wood is a conifer, yet in ninety percent of the specimens recognition is simple.

Remarkable West American Fossil, The Blue Lake Rhino, George F. Beck Aug 1937

Remarkable West American Fossil, The Blue Lake Rhino, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Bidding for acceptance as fact, and for its place in the sun of fame and notoriety, we come now to the newly discovered fossil rhino animal mold of Blue Lake in Grand Coulee, central Washington. Not that fossil rhinos are rare or that their abundance in the Tertiary of America has waited until the present for revelation, is this fossil important. The feature in the Blue Lake rhino which taxes our credulity is the existence of the thing in what unquestionably must pass as once liquid basaltic lava. That anything organic could pass through the terrific heat and pressure of …

The Preparation Of Glucuronic Acid From Gum Acacia, Mary Laurissa Felix Aug 1937

The Preparation Of Glucuronic Acid From Gum Acacia, Mary Laurissa Felix

Bachelors’ Theses

Initial interest in the preparation of glucuronic acid from gum acacia was prompted by several reasons. Being interested in both the chemical and biological fields, the subject of glucuronic acid made a strong appeal. Although glucuronic acid was discovered over fifty years ago, its position in physiology remained until recently undefined. Now, however, it seems fairly certain that this compound is closely related to carbohydrate metabolism and plays an important role as a detoxicating agent in the body.

The laboratory preparation of glucuronic acid is still one of the important problems of chemistry. Our present knowledge of its synthesis and …

Syntheses In The Thiophene Series, Alfred William Weitkamp Jul 1937

Syntheses In The Thiophene Series, Alfred William Weitkamp

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

SUMMARY

The Friedel-Crafts reaction has been used in the preparation of thiophene ketones, some of which were hitherto unknown. Certain limitations of the reaction have been noted.

The mercuration of thiophene ketones has been systematically investigated for the first time. Many new halogen derivatives of benzothienone have been synthesized. These were employed in the elucidation of the structure of a complex mercurial· derived from this ketone.

A new modification of an old reaction has been developed whereby benzothienone can be mercurated quickly and almost quantitatively. Interesting derivatives of this little known ketone have been synthesized. Chief among these are the …

A Chemical And Biological Study Of The Waters Of Elephant Butte Reservoir As Related To Fish Culture, John Greenbank

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The purpose of this preliminary survey was to determine, in so far as was possible in the limited time that was available, the general suitability of the waters of the reservoir for fish life, and to make such recommendations for future fish culture policy as seemed to be advisable. AN unpublished report of this preliminary survey was written by Dr. Hazzard.

Public Water Supplies Of New Mexico, Kenneth F. Priest Jun 1937

Public Water Supplies Of New Mexico, Kenneth F. Priest

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Distribution of population in State. The estimated population for the State of New Mexico for the year 1930 was 423,300. A close observation of the population centers shows them to be scattered over a wide range of territory. The largest city, Albuquerque, has approximately 26,000 citizens. The next sites, according to the 1930 count, are three in number, Santa Fe, Roswell, and Clovis. The remaining population including rural districts do not number over eight thousand people.
