De Linea Brevissima In Superficie Quacunque Duo Quaelibet Puncta Iungente, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

This article arose out of a homework assignment that Euler did for Johann Bernoulli. Bernoulli asked Euler to find the shortest line between two points on a surface. This work provided some of the first analytical foundations for the calculus of variations.

Dissertatio De Novo Quodam Curvarum Tautochronarum Genere, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

According to Eneström: "Intrigued by a clock invented by D. Sully, Euler busied himself with the construction of curves which cause a pendulum to swing isochronally."

Problematis Traiectoriarum Reciprocarum Solutio, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

This article contains Euler's first published use of complex numbers and a many-axis geometric construction. Euler also defines even functions f(x) as those for which f(x) = f(-x), perhaps the first use of this term.

Dissertatio Physica De Sono, Leonhard Euler

All Works by Eneström Number

Euler first explains his theory of what makes up the atmosphere; the basis of his theory lies in the theory of elasticity of the teacher he had before Johann Bernoulli. He also states without proof a formula for the speed of propagation and derives from it numerical values of the correct order of magnitude for air.

Self‐Consistent Electronic Structure Of Disordered Fe0.65ni0.35, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, G. M. Stocks Dec 984

Self‐Consistent Electronic Structure Of Disordered Fe0.65ni0.35, Duane D. Johnson, F. J. Pinski, G. M. Stocks

Duane D. Johnson

We present the results of the first a b i n i t i o calculation of the electronic structure of the disordered alloy Fe0.65Ni0.35. The calculation is based on the multiple‐scattering coherent‐potential approach (KKR‐CPA) and is fully self‐consistent and spin polarized. Magnetic effects are included within local‐spin‐density functional theory using the exchange‐correlation function of Vosko–Wilk–Nusair. The most striking feature of the calculation is that electrons of different spins experience different degrees of disorder. The minority spin electrons see a very large disorder, whereas the majority spin electrons see little disorder. Consequently, the minority spin density of states is smooth …

Studying Properties Of Xenon Doped Argon And Developing Optical Simulation Techniques For The Legend Collaboration, A Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay Experiment, Neil Christopher Mcfadden Dr

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Neutrinoless double beta decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process in which two neutrons decay to two protons, producing two electrons but no electron antineutrinos. The LEGEND collaboration will search for this decay in 76Ge. To improve the argon active veto for LEGEND-1000, xenon doped argon was explored as an alternative active volume. Simulations using argon doped with 10 ppm xenon and pure liquid argon were used to predict the light yield from cosmic muons in a 100 liter cryogenic vessel. The simulations predicted that xenon doping would yield 1.83+/-0.02 more light, while an increase of 1.81+/-0.05 was measured. From …

The Aerosphere As A Network Connector Of Organisms And Their Diseases, Jeremy D. Ross, Eli S. Bridge, Diann J. Prosser, John Y. Takekawa Dec 200

The Aerosphere As A Network Connector Of Organisms And Their Diseases, Jeremy D. Ross, Eli S. Bridge, Diann J. Prosser, John Y. Takekawa

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration. We use an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the …

Wearable Electrochemical Sensors For Monitoring Performance Athletes, Kevin J. Fraser, Vincenzo F. Curtin, Shirley Coyle, Benjamin Schazmann, Robert Byrne, Fernando Benito-Lopez, Roisin M. Owens, George C. Malliaras, Dermot Diamond Dec 200

Wearable Electrochemical Sensors For Monitoring Performance Athletes, Kevin J. Fraser, Vincenzo F. Curtin, Shirley Coyle, Benjamin Schazmann, Robert Byrne, Fernando Benito-Lopez, Roisin M. Owens, George C. Malliaras, Dermot Diamond

Conference Papers

Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting. In particular, the true potential of wearable chemical sensors, which for the real-time ambulatory monitoring of bodily fluids such as tears, sweat, urine and blood has not been realized. Here we present a brief introduction into the fields of ionogels and organic electrochemical transistors, and in particular, the concept of an OECT transistor incorporated into a sticking-plaster, along with a printable “ionogel” to provide a wearable biosensor …

The Pascal Matrix Function And Its Applications To Bernoulli Numbers And Bernoulli Polynomials And Euler Numbers And Euler Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Jeff Liao, Peter Shiue Dec 14

The Pascal Matrix Function And Its Applications To Bernoulli Numbers And Bernoulli Polynomials And Euler Numbers And Euler Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Jeff Liao, Peter Shiue

Tian-Xiao He

A Pascal matrix function is introduced by Call and Velleman in [3]. In this paper, we will use the function to give a uni#12;ed approach in the study of Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli polynomials. Many well-known and new properties of the Bernoulli numbers and polynomials can be established by using the Pascal matrix function. The approach is also applied to the study of Euler numbers and Euler polynomials.
