Pastoral Systems Of Central Himalaya: How Long Will They Survive?, K S. Rao, K G. Saxena
Pastoral Systems Of Central Himalaya: How Long Will They Survive?, K S. Rao, K G. Saxena
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
Pastoral systems of Central Himalaya are very old and until recent time were in balance with environment, Recent changes in sociopolitical setup have drastically altered the status of these systems. The change of political power in trans-Himalayan Tibetean plateau has resulted in closure of international boarders, thus taking away the mercantile aspects of pastoralists and reducing pastoral area. Increased human disturbances on fragile Himalayan marginal lands and excessive onslaught on forests for fuel and fodder by the sedentary population has resulted in degradation and non-productive grasslands which do not help pastoralists sustain existing systems. Changes in relations between migratory pastoralists …

Effect Of Sewage Sludge On The Mineral Composition Of Corn, Arthur E. Peterson, P E. Speth, P L. Schlecht
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
For the past 12 years, digested sewage sludge from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District has been applied to a Plano silt loam (prairie) soil near Elkhorn, Wisconsin, and corn raised as the indicator crop. The corn has been harvested as silage and fed to dairy cnttle. The amounts of macro-, micro-, and heavy metals contained in this forage were compared with the amounts contained in the untreated areas, and in the forage produced by a sustainable agriculture study on the same experimental station. None of the heavy metals have moved out of the plough layer (lop 25 cm). The uptake …
Sustainable Direction For Resource Management An Assessment Of The Regional Council Role, Allan Lohrey
Sustainable Direction For Resource Management An Assessment Of The Regional Council Role, Allan Lohrey
IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)
The 1980s has seen an increased world awareness of the concept of sustainability. In 1991 New Zealand enacted the Resource Management Act (RMA) which reflected society's concern for a need to consider future generations when making decisions relating to the use of natural resources. Regional councils have been allocated the role within the Act to promote sustainable management at the regional level. The short term challenge to regional councils is to manage resources in manner which strikes a pragmatic balance between the ongoing needs of society and the need to provide resources for future generations. Regional councils will know they …

Neurosymbolic Cognitive Methods For Enhancing Foundation Model-Based Reasoning, Kaushik Roy, Siyu Wu, Alessandro Oltramari
Neurosymbolic Cognitive Methods For Enhancing Foundation Model-Based Reasoning, Kaushik Roy, Siyu Wu, Alessandro Oltramari

Foundation models have emerged as powerful tools, exhibiting extraordinary performance across various tasks, such as language processing, visual recognition, code generation, and human-centered engagement. However, recent studies have highlighted their limitations when grounded, abstract, and generalized reasoning capabilities are required. Complex tasks often involve multiple hierarchical reasoning steps, which are typical features of human thinking processes. In fact, in this chapter we claim that cognitively-inspired computational models, such as the so-called Common Model of Cognition, are key to enable complex reasoning within foundation model-based artificial intelligence (AI) systems. We investigate neurosymbolic approaches for mapping AI system components to those of …

Data-Driven Mathematical Modeling And Simulation Of Migration Dynamics During The Russian-Ukrainian War, Danielle Sitalo, Alonso Ogueda-Oliva, Padmanabhan Seshaiyer
Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics
In this work, we employ a governing system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to create a mathematical model for getting insights into the dynamics of migration of Ukrainians evacuating due to war. A suitable assumption on coefficients of this model results in the well-known logistic growth. Additionally, stability analyses of equilibrium solutions for these ODEs are performed, and we employ parameter estimation techniques to identify coefficients using online datasets via both a least-squares approach as well as a physics informed neural network approach. Our findings indicate that over time, the daily influx of Ukrainian refugees to Poland stabilizes at a …

Application Of Haines And Terbrugge Chart For Suitable Slope Angles – A Case Study Of Artisanal And Small-Scale Mining, Carol Mgiba, Steven Rupprecht
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Significant hazards in Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) are rock failure and slope collapse caused by overly steep pit walls, poor mine design and water pressure. There is a lack of expertise and capital in ASM. Providing a simple and cost-effective slope stability analysis and designing systems that can mitigate the risk of slope collapse is essential. This article aims to assess whether stability charts and estimations can be used to establish suitable slope angles to mitigate the overwhelming cases of slope collapse in ASM. The Bieniawski’s Rock Mass Rating system and Heins and Terbrugge stability chart were used to …

A Primer On How Al Algorithms Control You, Russell Fulmer
Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision
Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms can control you by exerting heavy influence on your worldview. Your worldview is akin to your personal philosophy, which affects how you perceive and label social systems and structures, groups of people, and politics. Algorithms impact your decision-making, beliefs, mood, relationships, and more. My rhetoric is intentionally strong when discussing algorithms, and I invite you to assess its merit by reviewing related literature and thinking critically.

Could A Carbon Tax Improve Utah's Air Quality And Mitigate Climate Change?, Rose Cameron, Kendall Becker, Alexi Elizabeth Lamm, Scott Hotaling
All Current Publications
Urban areas in Utah have suffered from poor air quality since Euro-American settlement in 1847. Because today’s harmful air pollutants and carbon dioxide—the most significant driver of contemporary climate change—are often emitted together, a carbon tax could improve air quality while also mitigating climate change. Here, we explore how Sweden has successfully implemented a carbon tax and consider the viability of a similar approach for Utah. While a carbon tax would pressure Utah’s transportation and energy sectors to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, revenue from the tax could finance renewable energy infrastructure to support companies transitioning away from fossil fuels …

Building Community Resillience To Extreme Heat: Lessons Learned From Spokane, Wa Community Conversations, Anna Reed, Brian G. Henning, Marina Cortes Espinosa, Hannah Mckinley, Tania Busch Isaksen
Climate, Water, and the Environment Research
Heat is the primary cause of weather-related mortality in the United States. The 2021 Northwest Heat Dome highlighted this susceptibility. In Washington State, 159 excess deaths were attributed to the 7-day period of unprecedented extreme heat between June 26th and July 2nd. This impact was felt even in some of the more acclimatized parts of the state, like Spokane County, where 19 heat-related deaths were reported. As climate change increases the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme heat events, creating and sustaining heat-resilient communities has become an urgent public health priority. On 6 June 2023, Gonzaga University, in partnership with …

The ongoing evolution of malware presents a formidable challenge to cybersecurity: identifying unknown threats. Traditional detection methods, such as signatures and various forms of static analysis, inherently lag behind these evolving threats. This research introduces a novel approach to malware detection by leveraging the robust statistical capabilities of L-moments and the structural insights provided by Abstract Syntax Trees (ASTs) and applying them to PowerShell. L-moments, recognized for their resilience to outliers and adaptability to diverse distributional shapes, are extracted from network analysis measures like degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality of ASTs. These measures provide a detailed structural representation …

Software engineers develop, fine-tune, and deploy deep learning (DL) models using a variety of development frameworks and runtime environments. DL model converters move models between frameworks and to runtime environments. Conversion errors compromise model quality and disrupt deployment. However, the failure characteristics of DL model converters are unknown, adding risk when using DL interoperability technologies.
This paper analyzes failures in DL model converters. We survey software engineers about DL interoperability tools, use cases, and pain points (N=92). Then, we characterize failures in model converters associated with the main interoperability tool, ONNX (N=200 issues in PyTorch and TensorFlow). Finally, we formulate …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 2
The simulation of chemical reactions and mechanical properties including failure from atoms to the micrometer scale remains a longstanding challenge in chemistry and materials science. Bottlenecks include computational feasibility, reliability, and cost. We introduce a method for reactive molecular dynamics simulations using a clean replacement of non-reactive classical harmonic bond potentials with reactive, energy-conserving Morse potentials, called the Reactive INTERFACE Force Field (IFF-R). IFF-R is compatible with force fields for organic and inorganic compounds such as IFF, CHARMM, PCFF, OPLS-AA, and AMBER. Bond dissociation is enabled by three interpretable Morse parameters per bond type and zero energy upon disconnect. Use …

The Heat Kernel On A Finite Graph In Different Time-Scales, Yang Chen, Jay Jorgenson, Luis Lopez, Lejla Smajlovic
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
Let G be a finite, weighted graph, and let [[EQUATION]] be a Time-scale with a fixed point [[EQUATION]] such that sup[[EQUATION]]. In this paper we construct the heat kernel on G in Time-scale [[EQUATION]] in terms of a certain convolution series involving he heat operator acting on a parametrix, which is a fairly general function depending on the vertex set of G and the time variable [[EQUATION]]. We develop some applications by choosing different parametrices and various Time-scales. The results we obtain here do extend, in part, aspects of the recent articles in that the Time-scale considered in this paper …

Φ−Pluriharmonicity And Φ−Invariance Of Pointwise Bislant Riemanniansubmersions, Grayson Light, Cem Sayar, Mehmet Aki̇f Akyol
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this research, we investigate the intriguing realm of pointwise bislant Riemannian submersions, a generalizationof many previous submersions, such as antiinvariant, slant, semislant, pointwise slant, pointwise semislant, and bislant submersions, within the framework of almost product manifolds. After giving an original example, wedelve into the submersion’s integrability conditions and geodesics. We explore the concept of φ−pluriharmonicity andφ−invariance within this context. The study sheds light on the profound interplay between pointwise bislant submersions’fibers and their being either geodesic or mixed geodesic, offering valuable insights into these intriguing mappings’geometric properties.

Comprehensive Computational Study On Transient Heat Transfer In Functionally Graded Longitudinal Fins Under Time-Varying Laser Heating, Hüseyi̇n Demi̇r, İnci̇ Çi̇li̇ngi̇r Süngü, İbrahi̇m Keleş
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The present study assumes that the material properties of the fin vary by a force rule in the axial direction, with the exception of the thermal relaxation coefficient, which is assumed to be constant. The temperature distribution in the longitudinal fin with homogeneous cross-section exposed to the laser heat source is numerically investigated. This is because these constraints lead to a linear differential equation with partial solutions that can't be analytically resolved using conventional methods, except for a few elementary order functions. Consequently, a linear or non-linear system of equations as a function of time is obtained by transforming a …

A Short Note On Generalized Robertson Walker Spacetimes, Uday Chand De, Aydin Gezer
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this article, generalized Robertson Walker spacetimes are investigated in light of perfect fluid spacetimes. First, we establish that a perfect fluid spacetime with non-vanishing vorticity whose associated scalars are constant along the velocity vector field becomes a generalized Robertson Walker spacetime. Among others, it is also shown that a Ricci parallel perfect fluid spacetime is either a generalized Robertson Walker spacetime or a static spacetime. Finally, we acquire that in a conformally semi-symmetric generalized Robertson Walker spacetime of dimension $4$, the scalar curvature vanishes and the spacetime is locally isometric to the Minkowski spacetime, provided the electric part of …
