Investigation Of The Distribution Of Transuranic Radionuclides In Marine Sediment At The Montebello Islands, Western Australia, Madison Williams-Hoffman, Megan Cook, Jack K. Clegg, Ross Kleinschmidt, Pere Masqué, Mathew P. Johansen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Three nuclear weapons tests were conducted in the 1950s at the Montebello Islands, Western Australia. The detonations were of different yields and configurations (two tower tests, one ship test), and led to substantial radionuclide contamination within the surrounding terrestrial and marine ecosystems. The region possesses great ecological and recreational significance, particularly within the marine environment. However, studies conducted so far have largely neglected the marine ecosystem which makes up the majority of the Montebello Island Marine Park and in which most test fallout would have deposited. Here we investigated the distribution of the transuranic radionuclides 238Pu, 239,240Pu and 241Am in …

La Vida: Towards A Motivated Goal Reasoning Agent, Ursula Addison Sep 2024

La Vida: Towards A Motivated Goal Reasoning Agent, Ursula Addison

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

An autonomous agent deployed to operate over extended horizons in uncertain environments will encounter situations for which it was not designed. A class of these situations involves an invalidation of agent goals and limited guidance in establishing a new set of goals to pursue. An agent will benefit from some mechanism that will allow it to pursue new goals under these circumstances such that the goals are broadly useful in its environment and take advantage of its existing skills while aligning with societal norms. We propose augmenting a goal reasoning agent, i.e., an agent that can deliberate on and self-select …

Incorporating Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping In Computer-Aided Drug Design, Yeonji Ji Sep 2024

Incorporating Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping In Computer-Aided Drug Design, Yeonji Ji

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Advancements in computational techniques have revolutionized structure-based drug design, substantially improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the drug discovery process by reducing time, costs, and labor requirements. These advancements include various methods, such as investigating small molecule ligands binding to proteins, exploring alternative protein conformations, and solvation mapping on the protein surfaces. Among these methods, understanding the correlation between protein-ligand binding and the role of solvation is important.

A fundamental concept in protein-ligand binding is shape and electrostatic complementarity, which is complicated by the inherent flexibility of proteins. In the absence of small molecule ligands, proteins are complementary to surface …

Some New Properties Of Random Groups In The Density And Few-Relator Models, Anastasiia Chorna Sep 2024

Some New Properties Of Random Groups In The Density And Few-Relator Models, Anastasiia Chorna

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation, we delve into the subjects that lie in the intersection of random group theory and first-order theory, or as traditionally referred to in the field, the first-order theory of free groups (Sela (2006) and Kharlampovich and Myasnikov (2006), among others). In particular, we establish the following two findings. First, we demonstrate that for fixed k > 2, among finitely generated groups, those without finite index subgroups of index k are prevalent in the density model (as discussed in Chapter 3). Second, we show that a first-order universal sentence in the language of groups is almost surely true in …

Interplay Of Magnetic Impurities And Superconductivity In Topological Materials, Didier Ndengeyintwali Sep 2024

Interplay Of Magnetic Impurities And Superconductivity In Topological Materials, Didier Ndengeyintwali

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The interplay of superconductivity and magnetism has been a long-standing topic of interest since the discovery of superconductivity. In recent years it has been shown that topological superconductivity, which has promising applications such as in topological quantum computing, could result from such interplay. Motivated by the later results I study the effect of magnetic impurities in superconducting doped topological insulators, such as Iron based topological superconductors. I show that topological character of parent materials could lead to modifications in the structure of magnetic impurity induced in-gap states. Moreover, the superconductivity induced interaction between magnetic impurities in doped topological insulator would …

Shear Viscosity Of Quasi One-Dimensional Bec Tubes And Entanglement Negativity Conditions, Camilla Polvara Sep 2024

Shear Viscosity Of Quasi One-Dimensional Bec Tubes And Entanglement Negativity Conditions, Camilla Polvara

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Shear Viscosity of Quasi One-dimensional BEC Tubes

We consider layered Bose-Einstein condensates interacting via contact intra-condensate interacions and dipolar inter-condensate potentials, both of which dominate intercondensate tunneling (which we neglect for simplicity). For this system, we compute the normal modes, we study its localization properties by numerically computing the inverse participation ratio, and we compute the inter-tube shear viscosity.

Entanglement Negativity Conditions

This project explores bounds on entanglement negativity using operator inequalities, building on the results of [1]. We are looking for a way to quantify entanglement, as an alternative to calculating the full negativity, which would otherwise require the …

Twisted Alexander Polynomials And Ptolemy Varieties Of Knots And Surface Bundles, Michael R. Marinelli Sep 2024

Twisted Alexander Polynomials And Ptolemy Varieties Of Knots And Surface Bundles, Michael R. Marinelli

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The first focus of this dissertation is to compute Ptolemy varieties for triangulations of two infinite families of manifolds. Given an ideal triangulation of a cusped manifold, one can compute the Ptolemy variety and using it, obtain parabolic representations of the fundamental group. We compute certain obstruction classes for these manifolds, which are necessary to obtain the discrete faithful representation. This leads to our second focus of the dissertation, the twisted Alexander polynomial. The twisted Alexander polynomial (TAP) is a variation of the classical Alexander polynomial twisted by a representation of the fundamental group into a linear group. It was …

Categorical Chain Conditions For Étale Groupoid Algebras, Sunil Philip Sep 2024

Categorical Chain Conditions For Étale Groupoid Algebras, Sunil Philip

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Let R be a unital commutative ring and G an ample groupoid. Using the topology of the groupoid G, Steinberg defined an étale groupoid algebra RG. These étale groupoid algebras generalize various algebras, including group algebras, commutative algebras over a field generated by idempotents, traditional groupoid algebras, Leavitt path algebras, higher-rank graph algebras, and inverse semigroup algebras. Steinberg later characterized the classical chain conditions for étale groupoid algebras. In this work, we characterize categorically noetherian and artinian, locally noetherian and artinian, and semisimple étale groupoid algebras, thereby generalizing existing results for Leavitt path algebras and introducing new results for inverse …

Graph And Group Theoretic Properties Of The Soma Cube And Somap, Kyle Asbury, Ben Glancy Aug 2024

Graph And Group Theoretic Properties Of The Soma Cube And Somap, Kyle Asbury, Ben Glancy

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

The SOMA Cube is a puzzle toy in which seven irregularly shaped blocks must be fit together to build a cube. There are 240 distinct solutions to the SOMA Cube. One rainy afternoon, Conway and Guy created a graph of all the solutions by manually building each solution. They called their graph the SOMAP. We studied how the geometric structure of the SOMA Cube pieces informs the graph theoretic properties of the SOMAP, such as subgraphs that can or cannot appear and vertex centrality. We have also used permutation group theory to decipher notation used by Knuth in previous work …

Porphyry And Epithermal Au-Cu Systems Of The Southern Caucasus And Northern Iran, Alexander G. Tvalchrelidze Aug 2024

Porphyry And Epithermal Au-Cu Systems Of The Southern Caucasus And Northern Iran, Alexander G. Tvalchrelidze

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

This article presents tangible geological evidence for the coexistence of porphyry copper and epithermal gold systems within single polygenic deposits and provides a paleothermophysical model for their origins. A brief metallogenic analysis of the Southern Caucasus and Northern Iran has shown that such deposits are confined to long-living calc-alkaline island arcs and were formed during their orogenesis. Examples of complex Sonajil (Iran), Gharta, and Merisi (Georgia) deposits are considered. The investigation has shown that for combined porphyry and epithermal ore formation, some preconditions are suggested to exist: (i) a source of anomalous energy that exceeds the thermodynamics of the enclosing …
