Measuring Human Workload In Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Timothy J. Gledhill Sep 2014

Measuring Human Workload In Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Timothy J. Gledhill

Theses and Dissertations

Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) often require multiple human operators fulfilling diverse roles for safe and correct operation. Reliably designing the human interaction, autonomy, and decision making aspects of these systems requires the use of modeling. We propose a conceptual model that models human machine interaction systems as a group of actors connected by a network of communication channels. We present a simulation framework implemented in Java, with an optional XML model parser that can be analyzed using the Java Pathfinder (JPF) model checker. We propose two human workload metrics based on a taxonomy extracted from the relevant literature. Using the …

Simple, Label-Free And Non-Instrumented Analyte Quantitation By Flow Distance Measurement In Microfluidic Devices, Debolina Chatterjee Aug 2014

Simple, Label-Free And Non-Instrumented Analyte Quantitation By Flow Distance Measurement In Microfluidic Devices, Debolina Chatterjee

Theses and Dissertations

Rapid determination of the concentrations of molecules related to diseases can provide timely information for treatment options. However, most biomarker quantitation methods require costly and complex equipment. On the other hand, point-of-care systems have less complex instrumentation needs than laboratory-based equipment, but often provide less information; for example, biomarker presence or absence instead of concentration. A complete analysis setup addressing key limitations of both laboratory-based and portable systems is highly desirable. I developed microfluidic devices with visual inspection readout of a target’s concentration from microliter volumes of solution flowed into a microchannel. Microchannels are formed within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and the …

Browser-Based Manual Encryption, Yuanzheng Song Aug 2014

Browser-Based Manual Encryption, Yuanzheng Song

Theses and Dissertations

Billions of web-based email and chat messages are sent over the Internet every day. However, very few service providers support end-to-end privacy protection. While providing security for these messages is technically feasible, usability remains a challenge in this field. Recent research attempts to hide security details like key management and encryption in order to make the system more usable. However usability studies demonstrated that hiding these details may confuse the user and contribute to mistakes (e.g., sending out an email in plaintext when the user thought it would be encrypted). In an effort to increase trust and eliminate mistakes, this …

Build-And-Fill Development Of Lower Ismay (Middle Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation) Phylloid-Algal Mounds Of The Paradox Basin, Southeastern Utah, Lincoln H. Reed Aug 2014

Build-And-Fill Development Of Lower Ismay (Middle Pennsylvanian Paradox Formation) Phylloid-Algal Mounds Of The Paradox Basin, Southeastern Utah, Lincoln H. Reed

Theses and Dissertations

Phylloid-algal mounds form heterogeneous hydrocarbon reservoirs in the southeastern portion (Blanding sub-basin) of the Paradox Basin. Well-studied Lower Ismay mounds exposed along walls of the San Juan River gorge in the vicinity of Eight Foot Rapids, the west limb of the Raplee Anticline, and at the classic Honaker Trail locality (southwestern Paradox Basin) have often been cited as outcrop analogs of productive subsurface mounds. Until now, however, there has not been a complete description of the distribution, size, and spacing of outcropping algal mounds at the classic Eight Foot Rapids locality. The Lower Ismay sequence was analyzed in the context …

Synthesis Of 4'-Ester Resveratrol Analogues, Chromium Trioxide Oxidation Of Terpenes, And Synthesis Of Mimics Of (-)-Englerin A, Mark Jeffrey Acerson Aug 2014

Synthesis Of 4'-Ester Resveratrol Analogues, Chromium Trioxide Oxidation Of Terpenes, And Synthesis Of Mimics Of (-)-Englerin A, Mark Jeffrey Acerson

Theses and Dissertations

4’ -ester analogues of resveratrol were synthesized using reaction conditions developed to produce mono-ester products in the presence of two other unprotected phenols. Basic conditions were employed to deprotonate the most acidic 4’ phenol followed by addition of anhydrides or acid chlorides to give the ester product. The reaction favored 4’-ester formation in polar aprotic solvents with DMSO being the optimal solvent.

(—)-Englerin A is a guaiane-type sesquiterpene containing two ester side chains. Mimics of (—)-englerin A were proposed that retained the ester side chains while replacing the non-polar core with less complicated structures. These proposed mimic cores would maintain …

Communicating Affective Meaning From Software To Wetware Through The Medium Of Digital Art, R David Norton Aug 2014

Communicating Affective Meaning From Software To Wetware Through The Medium Of Digital Art, R David Norton

Theses and Dissertations

Computational creativity is a new and developing field of artificial intelligence concerned with computational systems that either autonomously produce original and functional products, or that augment the ability of humans to do so. As the role of computers in our daily lives is continuing to expand, the need for such systems is becoming increasingly important. We introduce and document the development of a new “creative” system, called DARCI (Digital ARtist Communicating Intention), that is designed to autonomously create novel artistic images that convey linguistic concepts to the viewer. Within the scope of this work, the system becomes capable of creating …

High-Performance Polymer Monoliths For Capillary Liquid Chromatography, Pankaj Aggarwal Jul 2014

High-Performance Polymer Monoliths For Capillary Liquid Chromatography, Pankaj Aggarwal

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on improving the chromatographic efficiency of polymeric organic monoliths by characterizing and optimizing the bed morphology. In-situ characterization techniques such as capillary flow porometry (CFP), 3-dimensional scanning electron microscopy (3D SEM) and conductivity measurements were developed and implemented to quantitatively characterize the morphology of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) monoliths. The CFP measurements for monoliths prepared by the same procedure in capillaries with different diameters (i.e., 75, 150, and 250 μm) clearly showed a change in average through-pore size with capillary diameter, thus, certifying the need for in-situ measurement techniques. Serial sectioning and imaging of PEGDA monoliths using …

Transposing Noninvertible Polynomials, Nathan Cordner Jul 2014

Transposing Noninvertible Polynomials, Nathan Cordner

Library Research Grants

In the class of invertible polynomials, the notion of dual polynomials W and WT, as well as dual groups G and GT is well-understood. In this paper we investigate finding dual pairs W and WT for noninvertible polynomials. We find that in many instances, our intuition that stems from invertible polynomials does not extend to the noninvertible case.

Using A Model Of Temporal Latency To Improve Supervisory Control Of Human-Robot Teams, Kyle Lee Blatter Jul 2014

Using A Model Of Temporal Latency To Improve Supervisory Control Of Human-Robot Teams, Kyle Lee Blatter

Theses and Dissertations

When humans and remote robots work together on a team, the robots always interact with a human supervisor, even if the interaction is limited to occasional reports. Distracting a human with robotic interactions doesn't pose a problem so long as the inclusion of robots increases the team's overall effectiveness. Unfortunately, increasing the supervisor's cognitive load may decrease the team's sustainable performance to the point where robotic agents are more a liability than an asset. Present approaches resolve this problem with adaptive autonomy, where a robot changes its level of autonomy based on the supervisor's cognitive load. This thesis proposes to …

Towards Stronger Coulomb Coupling In An Ultracold Neutral Plasma, Mary Elizabeth Lyon Jul 2014

Towards Stronger Coulomb Coupling In An Ultracold Neutral Plasma, Mary Elizabeth Lyon

Theses and Dissertations

Ultracold neutral plasmas are created by photoionizing laser-cooled atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Due to their large electrical potential energies and comparatively small kinetic energies, ultracold plasmas fall into a regime of plasma systems which are called “strongly coupled.” A priority in the field of ultracold plasmas is to generate plasmas with higher values of the strong coupling parameter Γ, which is given as the ratio of the nearest-neighbor Coulomb potential energy to the average kinetic energy. The equilibrium strong coupling in ultracold plasmas is limited by the ultrafast relaxation of the ions due to spatial disorder in the …

Tectonics Of Saturn's Moon Titan And Tsunami Modeling Of The 1629 Mega-Thrust Earthquake In Eastern Indonesia, Yung-Chun Liu Jul 2014

Tectonics Of Saturn's Moon Titan And Tsunami Modeling Of The 1629 Mega-Thrust Earthquake In Eastern Indonesia, Yung-Chun Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1-2:The Cassini RADAR mapper has imaged elevated blocks and mountains on Titan we term ‘ridges’. Two unresolved problems regarding Titan's surface are still debated: what is the origin of its ridges and was there tectonic activity on Titan? To understand the processes that produced the ridges, in this study, (1) we analyze the distribution and orientation of ridges through systematic geomorphologic mapping and (2) we compare the location of the ridges to a new global topographic map to explore the correlation between elevation and ridges and the implications for Titan's surface evolution. Globally, the orientation of ridges is nearly …

Bioinformatic Solutions To Complex Problems In Mass Spectrometry Based Analysis Of Biomolecules, Ryan M. Taylor Jul 2014

Bioinformatic Solutions To Complex Problems In Mass Spectrometry Based Analysis Of Biomolecules, Ryan M. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Biological research has benefitted greatly from the advent of omic methods. For many biomolecules, mass spectrometry (MS) methods are most widely employed due to the sensitivity which allows low quantities of sample and the speed which allows analysis of complex samples. Improvements in instrument and sample preparation techniques create opportunities for large scale experimentation. The complexity and volume of data produced by modern MS-omic instrumentation challenges biological interpretation, while the complexity of the instrumentation, sample noise, and complexity of data analysis present difficulties in maintaining and ensuring data quality, validity, and relevance. We present a corpus of tools which improves …

Slice—N—Dice Algorithm Implementation In Jpf, Eric S. Noonan Jul 2014

Slice—N—Dice Algorithm Implementation In Jpf, Eric S. Noonan

Theses and Dissertations

This work deals with evaluating the effectiveness of a new verification algorithm called slice--n--dice. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of slice--n--dice, a vector clock POR was implemented to compare it against. The first paper contained in this work was published in ACM SIGSOFT Software Engineering Notes and discusses the implementation of the vector clock POR. The results of this paper show the vector clock POR performing better than the POR in Java Pathfinder by at least a factor of two. The second paper discusses the implementation of slice--n--dice and compares it against other verification techniques. The results show that …

Investigation Of A New Method Of Estimating Acoustic Intensity And Its Application To Rocket Noise, Benjamin Young Christensen Jul 2014

Investigation Of A New Method Of Estimating Acoustic Intensity And Its Application To Rocket Noise, Benjamin Young Christensen

Theses and Dissertations

An alternative pressure-sensor based method for estimating the acoustic intensity, the phase and amplitude gradient estimation (PAGE) method, is presented. This method is similar to the finite-difference p-p (FD) method, in which the intensity is estimated from pressure measurements made using an array of closely spaced microphones. The PAGE method uses the same hardware as the FD method, but does not suffer from the frequency-dependent bias inherent to the FD method. Detailed derivations of the new method and the traditional FD method are presented. Both methods are then compared using two acoustic fields: a plane wave and a three monopole …

Discovery Of An Allosteric Site On Furin, Contributing To Potent Inhibition: A Promising Therapeutic For The Anemia Of Chronic Inflammation, Andrew Jacob Gross Jul 2014

Discovery Of An Allosteric Site On Furin, Contributing To Potent Inhibition: A Promising Therapeutic For The Anemia Of Chronic Inflammation, Andrew Jacob Gross

Theses and Dissertations

Release Date: October 2017

Anemia of chronic inflammation (ACI) is a condition that develops in a setting of chronic immune activation. ACI is characterized and triggered by inflammatory cytokines and the disruption of iron homeostasis. Hepcidin, a small peptide hormone, is the master regulator of iron homeostasis, and rapidly responds to iron supply and demand. Under conditions of chronic inflammation, hepcidin is elevated, and alters the way that iron is absorbed and disrupted throughout the body, resulting in disrupted iron homeostasis through inhibition of the iron exporter protein ferroportin. Anemia arises when insufficient erythropoietic activity combined with inadequate iron supply …

Paterae On Io: Geologic Mapping Of Tupan Patera And Experimental Models, Megan Carolee Decker Jul 2014

Paterae On Io: Geologic Mapping Of Tupan Patera And Experimental Models, Megan Carolee Decker

Theses and Dissertations

Paterae cover approximately 2% of the surface of Io, Jupiter’s volcanically active moon. To understand the formation of these volcano-tectonic depressions we created a geologic map of a key region and compared this map with experimental models for Io paterae. Our mapping region is Tupan Patera, a patera that has experienced recent activity and is a detected hot spot. We identified four primary types of geologic materials: plains, patera floors, flows, and diffuse deposits. We constructed an experimental model to test previous suggestions that paterae may form as volatiles in the silicate crust are vaporized by rising magma, creating instability, …

Improved Computer-Generated Simulation Using Motion Capture Data, Seth A. Brunner Jun 2014

Improved Computer-Generated Simulation Using Motion Capture Data, Seth A. Brunner

Theses and Dissertations

Ever since the first use of crowds in films and videogames there has been an interest in larger, more efficient and more realistic simulations of crowds. Most crowd simulation algorithms are able to satisfy the viewer from a distance but when inspected from close up the flaws in the individual agent's movements become noticeable. One of the bigger challenges faced in crowd simulation is finding a solution that models the actual movement of an individual in a crowd. This paper simulates a more realistic crowd by using individual motion capture data as well as traditional crowd control techniques to reach …

Autocompletion Without Static Typing, Nicholas Mckay Shelley Jun 2014

Autocompletion Without Static Typing, Nicholas Mckay Shelley

Theses and Dissertations

Code completion systems act both as a way to decrease typing and as a way to easily access documentation, both implicit and explicit. The former is typically done by completing known variable or function names, while the latter is done by providing a list of possible completions or by providing convenient views of or access to documentation. Because static type information makes these goals possible and feasible for qualifying languages, many improvements to completion systems are focused on improving the order of results or trimming less-valuable results. It follows that almost all validation techniques for this work have focused on …

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For State-Space Network Realization, Philip E. Paré Jr. Jun 2014

Necessary And Sufficient Conditions For State-Space Network Realization, Philip E. Paré Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents the formulation and solution of a new problem in systems and control theory, called the Network Realization Problem. Its relationship to other problems, such as State Realization and Structural Identifiability, is shown. The motivation for this work is the desire to completely quantify the conditions for transitioning between different mathematical representations of linear time-invariant systems. The solution to this problem is useful for theorists because it lays a foundation for quantifying the information cost of identifying a system's complete network structure from the transfer function.

Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging Of Calcium And Barium Ion Beams In The Second Vacuum Stage Of A Commercial Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Alisa Jane Edmund Jun 2014

Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging Of Calcium And Barium Ion Beams In The Second Vacuum Stage Of A Commercial Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, Alisa Jane Edmund

Theses and Dissertations

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometers (ICP-MS) have become the workhorses of many analytical labs over the past few decades. Despite the instruments' high sensitivities and low detection limits there is still a demand for improvements in several aspects of their performance. One area of improvement is in the understanding of "space charge effects" Space charge effects are classified as problems associated with the ion beam. Problems are created when the mutual repulsions of the ions make consistent focusing of the ion beam difficult. This is particularly problematic with samples containing a low concentration analyte contained within a high salt solution matrix, …

Wetlands On The Thousand Lake Mountain Mega-Landslide As Paleoclimate Proxies, Ryan Andros Shurtliff Jun 2014

Wetlands On The Thousand Lake Mountain Mega-Landslide As Paleoclimate Proxies, Ryan Andros Shurtliff

Theses and Dissertations

The Windy Ridge mega-landslide in Wayne and Sevier Counties originated in Lates tPleistocene time as established by 14C ages on basal organic-rich clay and peat sediment from bogs that developed on the slide. The contact depth between bog and landslide was estimated using high-resolution seismic reflection to find the thickest sediment. Four bogs were cored at their depocenters, and organic material at the slide contact was used for age determinations. The oldest bog sediments ages are 10,600 ± 46, 10,556 ± 34, 12,511 ± 134, and 12,886 ± 91 calibrated years BP. Ages represent two sliding events. First, at the …

Connecting Galois Representations With Cohomology, Joseph Allen Adams Jun 2014

Connecting Galois Representations With Cohomology, Joseph Allen Adams

Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, we examine the conjecture of Avner Ash, Darrin Doud, David Pollack, and Warren Sinnott relating Galois representations to the mod p cohomology of congruence subgroups of the general linear group of n dimensions over the integers. We present computational evidence for this conjecture (the ADPS Conjecture) for the case n = 3 by finding Galois representations which appear to correspond to cohomology eigenclasses predicted by the ADPS Conjecture for the prime p, level N, and quadratic nebentype. The examples include representations which appear to be attached to cohomology eigenclasses which arise from D8, S3, A5, and S5 …

Hecke Eigenvalues And Arithmetic Cohomology, William Leonard Cocke Jun 2014

Hecke Eigenvalues And Arithmetic Cohomology, William Leonard Cocke

Theses and Dissertations

We provide algorithms and documention to compute the cohomology of congruence subgroups of the special linear group over the integers when n=3 using the well-rounded retract and the Voronoi decomposition. We define the Sharbly complex and how one acts on a k-sharbly by the Hecke operators. Since the norm of a sharbly is not preserved by the Hecke operators we also examine the reduction techniques described by Gunnells and present our implementation of said techniques for n=3.

The Use Of Object-Oriented Programming Concepts For Documenting A Model Ensemble, Georgii A. Alexandrov Jun 2014

The Use Of Object-Oriented Programming Concepts For Documenting A Model Ensemble, Georgii A. Alexandrov

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The spread of cloud computing services gives community modelling a reasonable opportunity to become a reality in scientific research. However, even if models will be deployed in clouds, and model codes will be open for re-use, there will be little progress in community modelling in the lack of consensus standards for model documentation. This paper is to discuss a conceptual framework for developing such standards. The proposed conceptual framework is based on the idea that a new model is often a modification of an old one, and hence, the similarities between the models of the same environmental process could be …

Overcoming The Obstacles Of Motion Capture, Matthew Asanuma, Brent Adams Jun 2014

Overcoming The Obstacles Of Motion Capture, Matthew Asanuma, Brent Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Facial motion capture is used to capture the intimate and subtle motions of the facial features and apply them to a digital character’s face. Animation for the character, Davy Jones, in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies was achieved using this technique. In Overcoming the Obstacles of Motion Capture, I’ve tried to develop a relatively low-cost, yet high-performing technique suitable for a target market of students and independent artists.

Sand Sea Extents And Sediment Volumes On Titan From Dune Parameters, Karl D. Arnold Jun 2014

Sand Sea Extents And Sediment Volumes On Titan From Dune Parameters, Karl D. Arnold

Theses and Dissertations

Linear dunes are one of the most abundant and important features on the surface of Titan. We present a model for estimating the volume of dune sediment using the area coverage of Titan's sand seas along with dune widths, spacings, and heights. This helps to reveal local sediment transport and deposition. We refine global dune area estimates from Cassini SAR (Synthetic Aperture RADAR) of 20 million km2 or 24 ± 3% of Titan's surface based on ~50% Cassini RADAR global coverage. Additionally, the global area of sand seas is estimated from a joint analysis of Cassini SAR and ISS (Imaging …

Trustworthy, Useful Languages For Probabilistic Modeling And Inference, Neil B. Toronto Jun 2014

Trustworthy, Useful Languages For Probabilistic Modeling And Inference, Neil B. Toronto

Theses and Dissertations

The ideals of exact modeling, and of putting off approximations as long as possible, make Bayesian practice both successful and difficult. Languages for modeling probabilistic processes, whose implementations answer questions about them under asserted conditions, promise to ease much of the difficulty. Unfortunately, very few of these languages have mathematical specifications. This makes them difficult to trust: there is no way to distinguish between an implementation error and a feature, and there is no standard by which to prove optimizations correct. Further, because the languages are based on the incomplete theories of probability typically used in Bayesian practice, they place …

Hölder Extensions For Non-Standard Fractal Koch Curves, Joshua Taylor Fetbrandt Jun 2014

Hölder Extensions For Non-Standard Fractal Koch Curves, Joshua Taylor Fetbrandt

Theses and Dissertations

Let K be a non-standard fractal Koch curve with contraction factor α. Assume α is of the form α = 2+1/m for some m ∈ N and that K is embedded in a larger domain Ω. Further suppose that u is any Hölder continuous function on K. Then for each such m ∈ N and iteration n ≥ 0, we construct a bounded linear operator Πn which extends u from the prefractal Koch curve Kn into the whole of Ω. Unfortunately, our sequence of extension functions Πnu are not bounded in norm in the limit because the upper bound is …
