One-Loop Corrections To Dihadron Production In Dis At Small X, Filip Bergabo Feb 2023

One-Loop Corrections To Dihadron Production In Dis At Small X, Filip Bergabo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We calculate the one-loop corrections to dihadron production in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at small x using the Color Glass Condensate formalism. We show that all UV and soft singularities cancel while the collinear divergences are absorbed into quark and anti quark-hadron fragmentation functions. Rapidity divergences lead to JIMWLK evolution of dipoles and quadrupoles describing multiple-scatterings of the quark anti-quark dipole on the target proton/nucleus. The resulting cross section is finite and can be used for phenomenological studies of dihadron angular correlations at small x in a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).

Engineered Plga Nanofibers For Drug Delivery, Andrew Mancuso Feb 2023

Engineered Plga Nanofibers For Drug Delivery, Andrew Mancuso

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) polymers are rapidly gaining momentum as a platform for next-generation drug delivery systems due to their ease and low cost of synthesis, favorable biocompatibility and biodegradability, and lack of toxicity. In particular, the application of drug-loaded PLGA nanofibers directly to a target tissue may represent a promising alternative to traditional routes of drug administration (e.g., oral, injectable) as they offer the potential to greatly improve bioavailability, increase efficacy, and reduce off-target toxicity. Furthermore, the use of such a system may potentially allow for greater flexibility in clinical drug development, by enabling the use of compounds which have …

Optimized Peptide Nanomaterials As Delivery Vehicles For Hydrophobic Metal-Based Anticancer Agents, Yaron Marciano Feb 2023

Optimized Peptide Nanomaterials As Delivery Vehicles For Hydrophobic Metal-Based Anticancer Agents, Yaron Marciano

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Enzyme-responsive materials have been well explored, particularly as therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In this thesis we demonstrate that anionic self-assembling peptides can be utilized as delivery vehicles for metal-based hydrophobic payloads. The tunability of the system is highlighted as well as the increase in cytotoxicity and selectivity in vitro. The rapid degradation of peptides in cell media may lead to the formation of new peptide-drug bioconjugates with increased activity and selectivity. The physiological stability of these peptide delivery vehicles has been optimized by capping the N-terminus with an acetyl group. This simple backbone modification was shown to not prevent self-assembly, …

Revealing The Three-Dimensional Magnetic Texture With Machine Learning Models, Shihua Zhao Feb 2023

Revealing The Three-Dimensional Magnetic Texture With Machine Learning Models, Shihua Zhao

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Revealing three-dimensional (3D) magnetic textures with vector field electron tomography (VFET) is essential in studying novel magnetic materials with topologically protected spin textures potentially being used in the next-generation semiconductor industry. In this dissertation, we use machine learning (ML) models to reconstruct 3D magnetic textures from electron holography (EH) data.

We can feed the EH data, a series of two-dimensional (2D) phasemaps, into a neural network (NN) architecture directly or feed the EH data into a conventional VFET and then feed the reconstructed results into a NN. Thus, perceptive NN, either a simple convolutional neural network (CNN) or Unet architecture, …

Unlocking Potential: The School-To-Prison Pipeline For Students With Disabilities, Navena F. Chaitoo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This research uses quasi-experimental, matched sampling to examine the school-to-prison pipeline for students with disabilities using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. This study presents novel insights into an at-risk group that has faced disproportionate rates of school discipline and incarceration. The study finds school suspension to be associated with future involvement in the criminal legal system and lower educational attainment. Disability was not found to mediate the relationship between suspension and future involvement in the criminal legal system or the relationship between suspension and academic outcomes. However, disability was found to be a statistically …

Dynamics In Designed Elastins And Enzymes, Jonathan M. Preston Feb 2023

Dynamics In Designed Elastins And Enzymes, Jonathan M. Preston

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In this dissertation I present experimental results on the structure and dynamics of elastin, an elastomeric extracellular component in vertebrates that, in mammals, provides structure and elasticity to the circulatory system, lungs, skin and joints. These experiments, using a set of designed elastin like proteins with properties analogous to the natural protein, show that elastin is highly disordered and connect this disorder to its mechanism of assembly and elasticity. In addition, I also present preliminary work on imparting flexibility into a set of computationally designed metalloenzymes to broaden the range of catalytic activities they perform.

Synthesis And Analysis Of Novel Troponoid-Based Chemical Probes, Alex Berkowitz Feb 2023

Synthesis And Analysis Of Novel Troponoid-Based Chemical Probes, Alex Berkowitz

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Troponoids are a class of non-benzenoid aromatic species featuring a cycloheptatrienone ring and varying degrees of oxygenation. These scaffolds have proven ubiquitous amongst natural products, and have displayed promise as therapeutic agents against a variety of diseases. Herein, we will describe our efforts towards furthering troponoids as potential pharmaceuticals. In Chapter 1, we outline a kojic acid-derived oxidopyrylium cycloaddition/ring-opening method developed in our lab to generate ahydroxytropolones (aHTs). This route was successfully adapted to synthesize a small library of lipophilic aHTs that were proven to be effective against herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) replication, while providing further insight into the mechanism …

Beam-Based Target Alignment For Mu2e, Helenka Casler Feb 2023

Beam-Based Target Alignment For Mu2e, Helenka Casler

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Mu2e Experiment is a precision experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, searching for charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) in the conversion of a muon to an electron in the presence of an atomic nucleus. In order to achieve the expected single-event sensitivity of 3 × 10-17 , Mu2e will require an intense muon beam, generated via pion decay. These pions are the product of a proton beam striking a radiatively-cooled tungsten target. In order to maximize pion production and prevent target failure, the beam will have to be aligned with the target center to within 0.5 mm. The …

Electromagnetic Theory And Applications, Nicholas Madamopoulos, George Kliros

Open Educational Resources

This book intends to provide both the fundamentals of Electromagnetics but also some practical applications of the concepts covered. Having taught electromagnetics for several years, the authors feel that many times the field of electromagnetics comes as “old” and often times students do not appreciate the concepts and their importance in everyday applications. The authors intend to accompany the EM concepts with life applications. Hence, students may see the direct impact of the knowledge they acquire through the study of the field of electromagnetics and better appreciate the field.

Publications and Research

We present the first calculation of the complete set of NNLO QED corrections for muon-electron scattering. This includes leptonic, non-perturbative hadronic, and photonic contributions. All fermionic corrections as well as the photonic subset that only corrects the electron or the muon line are included with full mass dependence. The genuine four-point two-loop topologies are computed as an expansion in the small electron mass, taking into account both, logarithmically enhanced as well as constant mass effects using massification. A fast and stable implementation of the numerically delicate real-virtual contribution is achieved by combining OPENLOOPS with next-to-soft stabilisation. All matrix elements are …

Models For Decision-Making - Second Edition, Steven Cosares, Fred Rispoli Jan 2023

Models For Decision-Making - Second Edition, Steven Cosares, Fred Rispoli

Open Educational Resources

Decision-Making often refers to a multi-stage process that starts with some form of introspection or reflection about a situation in which a person or group of people find themselves. These ruminations usually lead to series of questions that need to be answered, or to a set of data that needs to be collected and analyzed, or to some calculations that need to be performed before someone can be in a position to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions.

We provide some simple examples of Quantitative Models, which are often found in a decision-making situation. We focus on the use …

R-Symmetries And Curvature Constraints In A-Twisted Heterotic Landau–Ginzburg Models, Richard S. Garavuso Jan 2023

R-Symmetries And Curvature Constraints In A-Twisted Heterotic Landau–Ginzburg Models, Richard S. Garavuso

Publications and Research

In this paper, we discuss various aspects of a class of A-twisted heterotic Landau–Ginzburg models on a Kähler variety X. We provide a classification of the R-symmetries in these models which allow the A-twist to be implemented, focusing on the case in which the gauge bundle is either a deformation of the tangent bundle of X or a deformation of a sub-bundle of the tangent bundle of X. Some anomaly-free examples are provided. The curvature constraint imposed by supersymmetry in these models when the superpotential is not holomorphic is reviewed. Constraints of this nature have been used to establish properties …

Publications and Research

Impact melt rocks formed during hypervelocity impact events are ideal for studying impact structures. Here, we describe impact melt rock samples collected proximal to the 31 km wide 58 Ma Hiawatha impact structure, northwest Greenland, which is completely covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet. The melt rocks contain diagnostic shock indicators (e.g., planar deformation features [PDF] in quartz and shocked zircon) and form three groups based on melt textures and chemistry: (i) hypocrystalline, (ii) glassy, and (iii) carbonate-based melt rocks. The exposed foreland directly in front of the structure consists of metasedimentary successions and igneous plutons; however, the carbonate-based impactites …

Understanding The Impacts Of Freshwater Fluxes On The Biogeochemistry Of The Coastal Arctic: A Case Study Of Prudhoe Bay, Francesca Lingo

Dissertations and Theses

The Arctic region, undergoing significant environmental changes due to rapid warming, faces alterations in air temperatures, melting permafrost, declining sea ice, and changes in riverine inputs. These shifts have profound implications for Arctic coastal ecology and biogeochemical cycles. This study, focusing on Alaska's North Slope, explores the influence of freshwater fluxes on water optical properties, vital for accurate satellite remote sensing interpretations. Our approach combined field measurements, existing data, and satellite remote sensing retrievals to identify biogeochemical gradients and their seasonal and interannual variations. A novel finding was the unique CDOM composition in Prudhoe Bay, characterized by a lower molecular …
