Morphology And Photocatalysis Of Titanium Dioxide Aerogels, Sean Kelly
Morphology And Photocatalysis Of Titanium Dioxide Aerogels, Sean Kelly
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Pollution of our environment has become one of the most serious problems of this century. Titanium dioxide aerogels is composed of nanocrystallites of TiO2 close-packed in roughly spherical mesospheres, which are agglomerated to form a highly-porous sponge. Aerogel morphology produces porosities of around 80% and surface area that can be as large as 1000 m2/g. The aerogels efficiently adsorb organic materials from the environment and when illuminated with UV light, decompose or oxidize the organic pollutants, ultimately to safe by-products such as CO2 and H 2O.
In this work we modify the synthetic conditions to produce aerogels with different morphologies …
Level Adjusted Exponential Smoothing: A Method For Judgmentally Adjusting Exponential Smoothing Models For Planned Discontinuities, Dan Williams, Don Miller
Level Adjusted Exponential Smoothing: A Method For Judgmentally Adjusting Exponential Smoothing Models For Planned Discontinuities, Dan Williams, Don Miller
Publications and Research
Forecasters often make judgmental adjustments to exponential smoothing forecasts to account for the effects of a future planned change. While this approach may produce sound initial forecasts, it can result in diminished accuracy for forecast updates. A proposed technique lets the forecaster include policy change adjustments within an exponential smoothing model. For 20 real data series representing Virginia Medicaid expenses, initial forecasts and forecast updates are developed using the proposed technique and several alternatives, and they are updated through various simulated level shifts. The proposed technique was more accurate than the alternatives in updating forecasts when a shift in level …

Research And Implementation Of Integrated Concurrent Software Development Environment Based On Object-Oriented Petri Nets, Jinzhong Niu
Research And Implementation Of Integrated Concurrent Software Development Environment Based On Object-Oriented Petri Nets, Jinzhong Niu
Publications and Research
While network technologies and environments get more and more popular, the demand for concurrent systems becomes stronger and stronger. But the characteristics of concurrency make it difficult to develop them.
This dissertation combines Object-Oriented technology and Petri Nets theory, and put forth OOPN (OO Petri Nets) model to describe concurrent systems. Based on the research of conventional development methods of concurrent software, this article advances a new one, which integrates specification, validation and auto-generating codes. Accordingly, an integrated development environment for concurrent software, i.e., OOPN-IDE, comes into being, which mainly includes the following four tools: the concurrent system modeling tool …

On C^1 Robust Singular Transitive Sets For Three-Dimensional Flows, Carlos Arnoldo Morales, Maria José Pacífico, Enrique Ramiro Pujals
Publications and Research
Abstract:
The main goal of this paper is to study robust invariant transitive sets containing singularities for C1 flows on three-dimensional compact boundaryless manifolds:they are partially hyperbolic with volume expanding central direction. Moreover, they are either attractors or repellers. Robust here means that this property cannot be destroyed by small C1-perturbations of the flow.

Publications and Research
The Proton Induced X-ray Emission technique with a scanning microbeam (micro-PIXE) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were employed to study gold-bearing rocks from the An Najadi and adjacent regions situated within the exposed northeastern part of the Arabian Shield. These microanalytical investigations, together with routine petrological and ore microscopic studies, demonstrated the presence of important partitioning of major minerals and trace elements in several samples. These measurements also revealed microstructural features including brecciation within quartz grains and metal concentrations within these fracture-controlled micro-conduits. Results showed promise in terms of using distinctive geochemical signatures for ore body recognition. Of particular interest …

Study Of Volcanic Sediments By Microbeam-Pixe Technique, Nazrul I. Khandaker, M. Ahmed, M. A. Garwan
Publications and Research
Single mineral grains in a suite of Cretaceous (85–90 Ma) volcanic sedimentary rocks were analyzed using the microbeam-PIXE technique to understand fundamental geological processes responsible for micro-scale variation in elemental composition across mineral zones, twinning, cleavage planes, fractures and grain boundaries. Distributions of major and trace elements show distinct geochemical features indicative of a specific geological setting and a subsequent diagenetic process in these volcanic sediments. Examples of mineral zoning, microstructures of variable chemistry and post-depositional fluid flow are discussed using the data on feldspar group of minerals.
Stochastic Approximation Methods For Systems Over An Infinite Horizon, Harold J. Kushner, Felisa Vázquez-Abad
Stochastic Approximation Methods For Systems Over An Infinite Horizon, Harold J. Kushner, Felisa Vázquez-Abad
Publications and Research
The paper develops efficient and general stochastic approximation (SA) methods for improving the operation of parametrized systems of either the continuous- or discrete-event dynamical systems types and which are of interest over a long time period. For example, one might wish to optimize or improve the stationary (or average cost per unit time) performance by adjusting the systems parameters. The number of applications and the associated literature are increasing at a rapid rate. This is partly due to the increasing activity in computing pathwise derivatives and adapting them to the average-cost problem. Although the original motivation and the examples come …

Thermal Development And Rejuvenation Of The Marginal Plateaus Along The Transtensional Volcanic Margins Of The Norwegian-Greenland Sea, Nilgun Okay
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The predominance of large-scale paleo-shear zones in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea is thought to be the major cause of asymmetric seafloor spreading in this region. Plate reconstructions suggest that nascent mid-ocean ridges propagated into these obliquely oriented shear zones causing transtension to occur. The asymmetric evolution of the northern Norwegian-Greenland Sea is evident from both the morphology of the seafloor as well as its geophysical characteristics. The eastern passive margins of the northern Norwegian-Greenland Sea are punctuated by volcanic plateaus which have significantly higher heat flow than the western passive margins. It is hypothesized that marginal volcanic plateaus formed originally in …

Careers In Chemical Information And Science Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Publications and Research
The ceaseless growth of chemical information has created a need for chemical professionals who can organize and disseminate this vast knowledge. If you like to read, enjoy being in a library, or like to work with information on computers, you may want to consider a career in chemical information. While only a small fraction of chemists choose this nontraditional career, they have found fulfillment in many different roles. Chemical information scientists and librarians using the powerful computerized databases now available either provide chemists and other research scientists the information they need, or teach researchers and students how to use these …
Modal Properties And Spontaneous Emission Factor In Unstable-Resonator Semiconductor Lasers, Gang Yao
Modal Properties And Spontaneous Emission Factor In Unstable-Resonator Semiconductor Lasers, Gang Yao
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
An experimental study has been carried out on the spectral, modal, and dynamical properties of a monolithic unstable-resonator semiconductor laser. Due to the large loss and the non-power-orthogonal nature of the transverse and longitudinal modes in the unstable resonator, the spontaneous emission factor, defined as the ratio of the power of the spontaneous emission entering the lasing mode to the total power of the spontaneous emission, is much larger than that of a regular Fabry-Perot cavity of the same dimension. The large spontaneous emission factor has profound effects on the lasing properties. For a 100-{dollar}\mu{dollar}m-wide and 500-{dollar}\mu{dollar}m-long stripe-geometry unstable resonator …

Long Chain Molecules In The Molten State: Surface Adsorption, Near Surface Structure, And Mutual-Diffusion, Xiaofeng Zhao
Long Chain Molecules In The Molten State: Surface Adsorption, Near Surface Structure, And Mutual-Diffusion, Xiaofeng Zhao
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The surface segregation in a binary mixture of polymer due to surface energy difference or end-grafting is studied. The surface energy difference induced segregation is compared with the mean-field theory. The end-labeling of chains strengthens the ability of the chain to bind to the surface, and the stretching of the end grafted chains is proved to be a controlling fact limiting the brush density. The structure of a chain near a surface needs to be known in order to make more quantitative analysis. Such knowledge is currently not available although a reflecting surface model is proposed.
We also studied the …
