The York College-hosted NASA MAA (MUREP AEROSPACE ACADEMY) has always played a pivotal role in minimizing the learning loss during the summer months, which was heightened during the pandemic. Support from AT&T, Con Edison and NASA enabled the MAA program at York College to offer a virtual STEM education with an earth science concentration to 1000 plus underserved K1-12 students from the community last summer, including 160 high school students. Two factors made this endeavor fruitful: allowing additional time to engage in STEM lessons and increasing self-motivation to successfully accomplish assigned tasks. Students built partnerships and resolved technical issues with …

Urbanization has been the central demographic trend, not only in the Asia-Pacific region, but also for the entire world. Local geo-mapping is the vital tool for analyses of land-use and land-cover. This study attempts to classify land-use in unsupervised settings and create land-cover map by using open-source Landsat data integrated with GIS technologies and other ancillary resources. This work concentrates on Gazipur Sadar (an upazila or sub-district of the Gazipur District in central Bangladesh, part of the Dhaka Division) and Kaliakair, which are rapidly growing unplanned urban and industrial zones. The usage of python coding greatly assisted accomplishing the post-classification …

Wave Function Identity: A New Symmetry For 2-Electron Systems In An Electromagnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni Oct 2021

Wave Function Identity: A New Symmetry For 2-Electron Systems In An Electromagnetic Field, Marlina Slamet, Viraht Sahni

Publications and Research

Stationary-state Schrödinger-Pauli theory is a description of electrons with a spin moment in an external electromagnetic field. For 2-electron systems as described by the Schrödinger-Pauli theory Hamiltonian with a symmetrical binding potential, we report a new symmetry operation of the electronic coordinates. The symmetry operation is such that it leads to the equality of the transformed wave function to the wave function. This equality is referred to as the Wave Function Identity. The symmetry operation is a two-step process: an interchange of the spatial coordinates of the electrons whilst keeping their spin moments unchanged, followed by an inversion. The Identity …

Development Of Predictive Models For Water Budget Simulations Of Closed-Basin Lakes: Case Studies Of Lakes Azuei And Enriquillo On The Island Of Hispaniola, Mahrokh Moknatian, Michael Piasecki Oct 2021

Development Of Predictive Models For Water Budget Simulations Of Closed-Basin Lakes: Case Studies Of Lakes Azuei And Enriquillo On The Island Of Hispaniola, Mahrokh Moknatian, Michael Piasecki

Publications and Research

The historical water level fluctuations of the two neighboring Caribbean lakes of Azuei (LA) and Enriquillo (LE) on Hispaniola have shown random periods of synchronous and asynchronous behaviors, with both lakes exhibiting independent dynamics despite being exposed to the same climatic forces and being directly next to each other. This paper examines their systems' main drivers and constraints, which are used to develop numerical models for these two lakes. The water balance approach was employed to conceptually model the lakes on an interannual scale and examine the assumptions of surface and subsurface processes. These assumptions were made based on field …

Introduction To Discrete Mathematics: An Oer For Ma-471, Mathieu Sassolas Oct 2021

Introduction To Discrete Mathematics: An Oer For Ma-471, Mathieu Sassolas

Open Educational Resources

The first objective of this book is to define and discuss the meaning of truth in mathematics. We explore logics, both propositional and first-order , and the construction of proofs, both formally and human-targeted. Using the proof tools, this book then explores some very fundamental definitions of mathematics through set theory. This theory is then put in practice in several applications. The particular (but quite widespread) case of equivalence and order relations is studied with detail. Then we introduces sequences and proofs by induction, followed by number theory. Finally, a small introduction to combinatorics is …

Sorption Of Metals At The Barite (001)-Water Interface, Inva Braha Sep 2021

Sorption Of Metals At The Barite (001)-Water Interface, Inva Braha

Student Theses

Abstract

Ion desorption processes control the retention of ions, such as Pb2+, at barite surfaces, whereas ion adsorption processes are a likely initial step in the incorporation of divalent cations, such as Sr2+ and Pb2+, into barite. Based on previous studies on samples dominated by flat terraces with relatively few defects, Sr2+ and Pb2+ adsorb and incorporate at the barite (001)-water interface (Bracco et al., 2019; Bracco et al., 2020). Here, I measured how susceptible lead (Pb) is to desorption and the role surface variability plays in its sorption behavior. First, I measured …

Connecting Communities To Coastal Resilience: Enhancing Sustainability Through Public Participation In Salt Marsh Management And Restoration In Suffolk County, Ny, Jennifer L. Mcgivern

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Coastal resiliency is becoming significantly more critical to the livelihood of coastal communities as the frequency and intensity of storm events increases and is exacerbated by rising sea levels due to climate change. In October 2012 Superstorm Sandy impacted the New York-New Jersey area costing over $70 billion in storm damages and 147 lives lost, as storm surges surpassed record highs for the region. Protruding more than 100 miles into the Atlantic Ocean with over 1,000 miles of shoreline, Long Island is particularly vulnerable to the increasingly ferocious and numerous storms as well as the rising sea levels that climate …

Piecewise Linear Manifold Clustering, Artyom Diky Sep 2021

Piecewise Linear Manifold Clustering, Artyom Diky

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This work studies the application of topological analysis to non-linear manifold clustering. A novel method, that exploits the data clustering structure, allows to generate a topological representation of the point dataset. An analysis of topological construction under different simulated conditions is performed to explore the capabilities and limitations of the method, and demonstrated statistically significant improvements in performance. Furthermore, we introduce a new information-theoretical validation measure for clustering, that exploits geometrical properties of clusters to estimate clustering compressibility, for evaluation of the clustering goodness-of-fit without any prior information about true class assignments. We show how the new validation measure, when …

Topological Classical Wave Systems With Modulations, Interactions, And Higher-Order Topological States, Mengyao Li Sep 2021

Topological Classical Wave Systems With Modulations, Interactions, And Higher-Order Topological States, Mengyao Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Topological phases in classical wave systems, such as photonic and acoustic, have been actively investigated and applied for wave guiding, lasing, and numerous other novel phenomena and device applications Topological phase transitions enable robust boundary states, and the field has been broadening recently into a vast variety of systems with temporal modulations and interactions. Floquet modulation, for example, is the modulation applied periodically in time which may break symmetries and leads to novel topological phases.

Introducing non-Hermitian Floquet modulation enables more interesting phenomena including bandgap in imaginary part of the spectrum and gainy/lossy topological edge states with complex energy values. …

Don't Sell Them Short, There's More To Bacterial Natural Products Than Antibiotics, Alison Clare Domzalski Sep 2021

Don't Sell Them Short, There's More To Bacterial Natural Products Than Antibiotics, Alison Clare Domzalski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Recent genomic studies of microbiomes have revealed an overwhelming number of biosynthetic genes of unknown function. Most of these “cryptic” biosynthetic genes are not expressed in laboratory monocultures of individual microbes. Thus, there remains tremendous untapped potential for natural products discovery. Here we employ mixed microbial culture (MMC) as a simple yet powerful approach to awaken cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters. Our preliminary studies demonstrated that arrays of metabolites could be induced in MMCs upon environmental cues, such as surface adhesion. Using this system, we have screened, identified, and isolated bioactive bacterial metabolites, which were characterized structurally and biologically. Of the …

Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics And Network Analysis Of The Gramicidin Water Channel And Proton Transfer Pathways To Qb In Photosynthetic Reaction Centers, Yingying Zhang Sep 2021

Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics And Network Analysis Of The Gramicidin Water Channel And Proton Transfer Pathways To Qb In Photosynthetic Reaction Centers, Yingying Zhang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Water molecules play a key role in all biochemical processes. They help define the shape of proteins, and they are reactant or product in many reactions and are released as ligands are bound. They facilitate transfer of protons through transmembrane proton channel, pump and transporter proteins. Continuum electrostatics (CE) force fields such as used in MCCE (Multi-Conformation Continuum Electrostatics) capture electrostatic interactions in biomolecules with an implicit solvent, to give the averaged solvent water equilibrium properties. Hybrid CE methods can use explicit water molecules within the protein surrounded by implicit solvent. These hybrid methods permit the study of explicit hydrogen …

Solving Multiple Inference In Graphical Models, Cong Chen Sep 2021

Solving Multiple Inference In Graphical Models, Cong Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For inference problems in graphical models, much effort has been directed at algorithms for obtaining one single optimal prediction. In practice, the data is often noisy or incomplete, which makes one single optimal solution unreliable. To address this problem, multiple Inference is proposed to find several best solutions, M-Best, where multiple hypotheses are preferred for advanced reasoning. People use oracle accuracy as an evaluation criterion expecting one of the solutions has high accuracy with the ground truth. It has been shown that it is beneficial for the top solutions to be diverse. Approaches for solving diverse multiple inference are proposed …

Wave Excitation And Dynamics In Disordered Systems, Yiming Huang Sep 2021

Wave Excitation And Dynamics In Disordered Systems, Yiming Huang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis presents studies of the field and energy excited in disordered systems as well as the dynamics of scattering.

Dynamic and steady state aspects of wave propagation are deeply connected in lossless open systems in which the scattering matrix is unitary. There is then an equivalence among the energy excited within the medium through all channels, the Wigner time delay, which is the sum of dwell times in all channels coupled to the medium, and the density of states. But these equivalences fall away in the presence of material loss or gain. In this paper, we use microwave measurements, …

Dependent on the target analyte polarity, thermal degradation, solubility and type of matrix, an appropriate method of analysis will be established. The …

Diffraction-Based Studies Of Magneto- And Baro-Caloric Materials, Steven P. Vallone Sep 2021

Diffraction-Based Studies Of Magneto- And Baro-Caloric Materials, Steven P. Vallone

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The field of calorics represents a class of materials that offer the potential for solid-state cooling and heating, and, given the global climate crisis, comprise a necessary and active area of research. A clear and thorough understanding of their internal structural interactions and their external response to the environment is necessary for overall progress in the field, as accurate theoretical modeling and efficient materials design for devices both depend on this information. Through analysis of x-ray and neutron diffraction, the atomic order and disorder that drives these interactions is revealed. This dissertation focuses on diffraction studies concerning representative samples from …

Making Space For Unquantifiable Data: Hand-Drawn Data Visualization, Eva Sibinga Sep 2021

Making Space For Unquantifiable Data: Hand-Drawn Data Visualization, Eva Sibinga

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This project makes space for personal “data” around labor and care, prompting users to consider the concrete and abstract (quantifiable and unquantifiable) forms labor and care take in their lives. The interactive, subjective data visualization uses hand-drawn visual elements to foreground that data about care and human interaction will always be ambiguous and complex, that they may never be satisfactorily or universally quantified, and that they will always be out of reach of perfect categorization.

The project provides an alternative to prescriptive truth-telling with data. Instead of using a dataset to provide data-driven answers and insights to users, the interactive …

Tools And Strategies For The Patterning Of Bioactive Molecules And Macromolecules, Daniel J. Valles Sep 2021

Tools And Strategies For The Patterning Of Bioactive Molecules And Macromolecules, Daniel J. Valles

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Hypersurface Photolithography (HP) is a printing method for fabricating structures and patterns composed of soft materials bound to solid surfaces and with ~1 micrometer resolution in the x, y, and z dimensions. This platform leverages benign, low intensity light to perform photochemical surface reactions with spatial and temporal control of irradiation, and, as a result, is particularly useful for patterning delicate organic and biological material. In particular, surface- initiated controlled radical polymerizations can be leveraged to create arbitrary polymer and block- copolymer brush patterns. Chapter 1 will review the advances in instrumentation architectures from our group that have made these …

Differentiability Of The Liouville Map Via Geodesic Currents, Xinlong Dong Sep 2021

Differentiability Of The Liouville Map Via Geodesic Currents, Xinlong Dong

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

For a conformally hyperbolic Riemann surface, the Teichmüller space is the space of quasiconformal maps factored by an equivalence relation, and it is a complex Banach manifold. The space of geodesic currents endowed with the uniform weak* topology is a subset of a Fréchet space of Hölder distributions. We introduce an appropriate topology on the space of Hölder distributions and this new topology coincides with the uniform weak* topology on the space of geodesic currents. The Liouville map of the Teichmüller space becomes differentiable in the Fréchet sense. In particular, the derivative of Liouville currents exists and belongs to the …
