This paper is concerned with the organic derivation and primary meaning of Pleistocene finger flutings; I propose that in order to gain insight into the significance of the flutings, we must attempt an understanding of the physical and mental contexts in which they emerged. I suggest that finger flutings provided a cultural record in the Pleistocene which documented thought and action, and made it ready for reflection. Through the process of finger fluting, the human 'self' was objected and reality was modified in the experience of self-consciuosness. I argue that finger flutings, like language, were employed to discover and convey …

Resonance Raman Investigation Of The Radical Cation Of 1,3,5-Hexatriene, Tamas Keszthelyi, Robert Wilbrandt, Robert J. Cave, Jenifer L. Johnson
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The resonance Raman spectrum of the 1,3,5-hexatriene radical cation generated by v-irradiation in a Freon glass is reported. The spectrum is excited at 395 nm in resonance with the second absorption band. Identical spectra are obtained from ionized (E)- and (Z)-1,3,5-hexatriene. The presence of more than one rotamer has to be assumed to account for all the observed resonance Raman bands. The bands are assigned to a mixture of the two rotamers, calculated at lowest energy, the ttt an tct rotamers, on the basis of ab initio ROHF/6-31G calculated harmonic frequencies. The spectrum indicates that …
Fault-Tolerant Circuit-Switching Networks, Nicholas Pippenger, Geng Lin
Fault-Tolerant Circuit-Switching Networks, Nicholas Pippenger, Geng Lin
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The authors consider fault-tolerant circuit-switching networks under a random switch failure model. Three circuit-switching networks of theoretical importance—nonblocking networks, rearrangeable networks, and superconcentrators—are studied. The authors prove lower bounds for the size (the number of switches) and depth (the largest number of switches on a communication path) of such fault-tolerant networks and explicitly construct such networks with optimal size Θ( n (log n)2 ) and depth Θ( log n ).

An analytical model is presented for the propagation of diffuse photon density waves in turbid media. The frequency- and wavelength-dependence of photon density waves are measured using Frequency-domain Photon Migration (FDPM). Media optical properties, including absorption, transport, and fluorescence relaxation times are calculated from experimental results.

Finite Amplitude Convection Between Stress-Free Boundaries; Ginzburg-Landau Equations And Modulation Theory, Andrew J. Bernoff
Finite Amplitude Convection Between Stress-Free Boundaries; Ginzburg-Landau Equations And Modulation Theory, Andrew J. Bernoff
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The stability theory for rolls in stress-free convection at finite Prandtl number is affected by coupling with low wavenumber two-dimensional mean-flow modes. In this work, a set of modified Ginzburg-Landau equations describing the onset of convection is derived which accounts for these additional modes. These equations can be used to extend the modulation equations of Zippelius & Siggia describing the breakup of rolls, bringing their stability theory into agreement with the results of Busse & Bolton.
Advection Of A Passive Scalar By A Vortex Couple In The Small-Diffusion Limit, Joseph F. Lingevitch, Andrew J. Bernoff
Advection Of A Passive Scalar By A Vortex Couple In The Small-Diffusion Limit, Joseph F. Lingevitch, Andrew J. Bernoff
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We study the advection of a passive scalar by a vortex couple in the small-diffusion (i.e. large Péclet number, Pe) limit. The presence of weak diffusion enhances mixing within the couple and allows the gradual escape of the scalar from the couple into the surrounding flow. An averaging technique is applied to obtain an averaged diffusion equation for the concentration inside the dipole which agrees with earlier results of Rhines & Young for large times. At the outer edge of the dipole, a diffusive boundary layer of width O(Pe−½) forms; asymptotic matching to the interior …

Several ab initio methods are applied to the study of two linear isomers of methylidyne phosphine, HCP, and HPC. Single-reference correlation methods ranging from second-order Møller-Plesset theory to coupled cluster singles and doubles theory with noninterative inclusion of connected triple excitations were applied in a variety of basis sets of increasing size. In addition, complete active space self-consistent field wave functions, multireference singles and doubles configuration interaction, and averaged coupled pair functional theory were also applied to HPC. For HPC comparison of the single-reference based results is made with experimental data and previous theory to assess the accuracy …
A Theoretical Investigation Of The Geometries, Vibrational Frequencies, And Binding Energies Of Several Mixed Alkali Halide Dimers, Robert J. Cave, Ian Ono '94
A Theoretical Investigation Of The Geometries, Vibrational Frequencies, And Binding Energies Of Several Mixed Alkali Halide Dimers, Robert J. Cave, Ian Ono '94
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Results are presented from ab initio calculations on several mixed alkali halide dimers made up of Li, Na, F, and Cl. All of the dimers are investigated at the restricted Hartree–Fock level to provide ab initio estimates of geometries, vibrational frequencies, and binding energies. The dimer LiNaF2 is then treated using a variety of basis sets at the Hartree–Fock level, as well as at correlated levels (second‐order Møller–Plesset and coupled‐cluster singles and doubles) to examine the sensitivity of the calculations to use of higher levels of theory. The results are then compared to the experimental data available for the LiNaF2 …

Short Terahertz Pulses From Semiconductor Surfaces: The Importance Of Bulk Difference‐Frequency Mixing, Peter N. Saeta, Benjamin I. Greene, Shun Lien Chuang
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The crystallographic orientation dependence of the far‐infrared (FIR) light generated at the (001) surface of a zincblende semiconductor is shown to derive principally from bulk difference‐frequency mixing. A strong modulation is observed for 1‐GW/cm2 pulses on InP, which demonstrates that the radiated FIR wave produced by bulk optical rectification is comparable to that generated by the transport of photoinjected carriers. Using the bulk rectification light as a clock, we show that more than 95% of the light produced from an InP (111) crystal by 100‐fs, 100‐μJ pulses is generated in a time shorter than the excitation pulse.

Rodent species typically evolve larger mean body sizes when isolated on islands, but the extinct caviomorph Amblyrhiza inundata, known only from Quaternary cave deposits on the islands of Anguilla and St. Martin (northern Lesser Antilles), provides an unusually dramatic example of insular gigantism. Here we report on a series of body mass estimates for Amblyrhiza using predictive equations based on anteroposterior diameters and cortical cross-sectional areas of humeral and femoral diaphyses. Analyses of 14 isolated specimens (5 femoral, 9 humeral), all representing adult or near adult animals, yield body mass estimates ranging from slightly less than 50 kg to more …
The Lazer Mckenna Conjecture For Radial Solutions In The Rn Ball, Alfonso Castro, Sudhasree Gadam
The Lazer Mckenna Conjecture For Radial Solutions In The Rn Ball, Alfonso Castro, Sudhasree Gadam
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
When the range of the derivative of the nonlinearity contains the first k eigenvalues of the linear part and a certain parameter is large, we establish the existence of 2k radial solutions to a semilinear boundary value problem. This proves the Lazer McKenna conjecture for radial solutions. Our results supplement those in [5], where the existence of k + 1 solutions was proven.
