Antifungal Defense Molecules From Bacterial Symbionts Of North American Trachymyrmex Ants, Georgia Scherer

Defensive symbioses, in which microbes provide molecular defenses for an animal host, hold great potential as untapped sources of therapeutically useful antibiotics. Fungus-growing ants use antifungal defenses from bacterial symbionts to suppress pathogenic fungi in their nests. Preliminary chemical investigations of symbiotic bacteria from this large family of ants have uncovered novel antifungal molecules with therapeutic potential, such as dentigerumycin and selvamicin.
In this study, the bacterial symbionts of North American Trachymyrmex fungus-growing ants are investigated for antifungal molecules. Plate-based bioassays using ecologically-relevant fungal pathogens confirmed that these bacteria have antifungal activity. In order to purify and identify the antifungal …

This dissertation is a collection of four studies which collectively explore a hypothesized construct of ‘moral evaluation of patient behaviors’ (MEPB) as a driver of health professionals’ readiness to interact humanistically with their patients. In these studies, ‘humanistic interactions’ refer to the non-technical, intangible skills and factors of clinical competence; the factors specifically explored in these studies were compassion toward patients, self-efficacy for treating patients, and optimism toward patient treatment. For the purpose of specificity, all factors were examined as they pertained to patients with substance use disorders. As DNA sequencing prices continue to drop, many research groups around the world have incorporated high throughput sequencing in their research, giving us access to sequences from many distinct ecosystems. This preliminary study covered (a) the effects of in-place air voids and other factors on fatigue cracking using Long-Term Pavement Performance data, (b) fracture properties of asphalt concrete in a semicircular bend (SCB) test using a noncontact camera and crosshead movement, and (c) hot applied modified-binder-chip-seal field performance in California. The objective is to improve pavement performance and life, establish a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) tests of fracture properties of asphalt mixtures, and save millions of dollars on maintenance and rehabilitation. Random Forest (RF) is a flexible, easy to use machine learning algorithm that was proposed by Leo Breiman in 2001 for building a predictor ensemble with a set of decision trees that grow in randomly selected subspaces of data. Its superior prediction accuracy has made it the most used algorithms in the machine learning field. In this dissertation, we use the random forest as the main building block for creating a proximity matrix for multivariate matching and diagnostic classification problems that are used for autism research (as an exemplary application). Learning individualized treatment regimes (ITR) using observational data holds great interest in various fields, as treatment recommendations based on individual characteristics may improve individual treatment benefits with a reduced cost. It has long been observed that different individuals may respond to a certain treatment with significant heterogeneity. ITR can be defined as a mapping between individual characteristics to a treatment assignment. The optimal ITR is the treatment assignment that maximizes expected individual treatment effects. The spectrum of any differential equation or a system of differential equations is related to several important properties about the problem and its subsequent solution. So much information is held within the spectrum of a problem that there is an entire field devoted to it; spectral analysis. In this thesis, we perform spectral analysis on two separate complex dynamical systems. The vibrations along a continuous string or a string with beads on it are the governed by the continuous or discrete wave equation. In this work, the general problem of the detection of features in images is considered. One of the methods, the orientation detection of lines, utilized the Radon transform (sinogram) of an image to detect lines at different angles in an image. The line thickness algorithm was generated by finding a pattern formed by particular lines in an image. The filtering of reconstructed images dealt with the removal of blur and other artifacts that arose in the course of inverting the Radon transform of an image to attempt to obtain the original image.

A semi-Lagrangian method is developed for the solution of Lagrangian transport equations and stochastic differential equations that is consistent with Discontinuous Spectral Element Method (DSEM) approximations of Eulerian conservation laws. The method extends the favorable properties of DSEM that include its high-order accuracy, its local and boundary fitted properties and its high performance on parallel platforms for the concurrent semi-Lagrangian and Eulerian solution of a class of time-dependent problems that can be described by coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian formulations. About Time was a 30 foot long, 3000 pound wooden sundial that went up in flames at Burning Man 2019. The piece reflected on the role time plays in our lives. We organize our lives around time—are enslaved to time—and yet we know so little about it. Animal products, such as pangolin scales, rhinoceros horns, tiger bones, and bear bile have been used in East Asian traditional medicine (TM) for more than 2,000 years. However, markets for medicinal wildlife products have expanded dramatically in countries like China and Vietnam in recent decades where economic prosperity has enabled a larger proportion of the population to afford wildlife products (Olmedo et al. 2017). Related new farming and commercialization practices to meet growing international demand pose environmental and human health risks. Animal products also symbolize shared cultural and historical medical practices that are distinct from the dominant Western medical model.

In this note we explore the group stage competition format in a standard FIFA World Cup Soccer Championship group phase. The group stage involves thirty-two teams divided into eight groups of four teams each, based on a draw that takes the national teams’ seeding and geographical location into consideration. In this paper, simple ordinary differential equations are discussed against the background of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. In addition, a version of this relationship in a somewhat opposite setting is considered. It is proposed that engineering mathematics courses include this topic in order to promote additional interest in differential equations. In the final section it is shown that vibration of a single-degree-of-freedom mechanical system can be cast as a love-hate relationship between its displacement and velocity, and dynamic instability identified as a transition from trigonometric love to hyperbolic.

Mathematical expertise demands effective thinking and learning methods, and these techniques transfer well to other domains. In this article, I discuss how my own training as a pure mathematician influenced my performance in three disparate domains: electrical engineering, art appreciation, and learning Italian. In electrical engineering, the focus is on how mathematical reasoning and thinking processes impact knowledge acquisition and problem solving. Appreciating and analyzing art raises the question, “How do we know for certain?” Acquiring fluency in another language is akin to gaining mathematics proficiency, and here, I explore the human side of persistence. For some it is “the purest of the arts”, where the mathematicians’ art is “asking simple and elegant questions about our imaginary creations, and crafting satisfying and beautiful explanations”. Yet with classroom time given primarily to “covering the curriculum”, testing, and practicing problem-solving procedures, students’ opportunities to appreciate the aesthetic dimension of mathematics are often limited.
