Salinity In Western Australia : A Situation Statement, V T. Read

Resource management technical reports

The Select Committee on Salinity was established by the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in November 1987 to inquire into and report on salinity in Western Australia giving particular regard to:

• what action has, or is being taken, to assess the magnitude of the problem;

• what form of action can, or should, be taken to control salinity;

• what legislative of administrative acts or incentives to the private sector are necessary or desirable to assist further in controlling or eradicating salinity.

Members appointed to the Select Committee were the Honourable David Wordsworth (Chairman), the Honourable …

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigations In The Eastern Wheatbelt 2. Merredin Catchment, Richard J. George Dr, P W C Frantom

Resource management technical reports

Saline groundwater occurs within twelve metres of the surface throughout the valley of the Merredin catchment. Saline groundwater occurs within deep sediments deposited in the valley and deeply-weathered bedrock materials. Rapid groundwater recharge appears to be taking place in sandy-textured soils high in the landscape and directly into the Cainozoic sediments in the valley floor. Water-tables are rising at approximately ten centimetres each year in the upper catchment area.

The Use Of Permeability, Conductivity, Conductance And Resistance In The Description Of Water Movement In Soils And Plants, H Borg Jan 1988

The Use Of Permeability, Conductivity, Conductance And Resistance In The Description Of Water Movement In Soils And Plants, H Borg

Resource management technical reports

Permeability, conductivity, conductance and resistance are important parameters in the description of water movement in soils and plants. These terms are related, but not synonymous. Permeability is only a function of the flow pathgeometry of the medium, while conductivity also depends on the fluid involved. Conductance, in addition, takes the size of the medium into account. Resistance is simply the inverse ofconductance. By applying the definition of resistance, it isshown that Darcy's law and Ohm's law are equivalent. Conductance and resistance relate volume flow rate to a potential difference, but to relate volume flux (volume flowrate per unit area) to …

Management Of Native Vegetation On Farmland In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, A M. Coates Oct 1987

Management Of Native Vegetation On Farmland In The Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, A M. Coates

Resource management technical reports

Clearing in the wheatbelt region of Western Australia has been rapid and extensive. The mapping of remnant vegetation in the shires of Dumbleyung, Lake Grace, Pingelly and Tammin with the use of the most recent aerial photography (1984) demonstrates the extent of clearing especially in the old established farming areas. Only 7 per cent of the Tammin shire had been retained under native vegetation, 10 per cent of the Dumbleyung shire and 14 per cent of the Pingelly shire. In the Lake Grace shire where large areas have only recently been developed for agriculture, approximately 31 per cent had been …

Preliminary Groundwater And Salinity Investigations In The Eastern Wheatbelt. 3. Welbungin And Beacon River Catchments, Richard J. George Dr, P W C Frantom

Resource management technical reports

Water-tables show no obvious signs of a nett annual rise in the bores monitored in the valley floor, lower slope areas over the three year period. Groundwaters are extremely saline, the sedimentary and saprolite aquifers permeable (hydraulic conductivity range 0.1-2.0 m/day) (0.0001). Future management systems should seek to decrease recharge by changing rotations and farm practises while increasing discharge by using trees, pumps and halophytes. Options are available for drainage.

Drains : A Method Of Financially Assessing Drains Used To Mitigate Waterlogging In South-Western Australia, John S. Salerian, D J. Mcfarlane

Resource management technical reports

Seepage interceptor drains are often effective in mitigating waterlogging in duplex (sand over clay) soils on hill slopes in the sout-west. Spoon and W drains are sometimes effective in removing excess surface waters form clay flats.

This report outlines a method to determine the long-term (1 to 20 years) cost-effectiveness of installing drains to mitigate waterlogging for each individual situation.

Trial 65sg5, I Rowland., W Hawkins Jan 1987

Trial 65sg5, I Rowland., W Hawkins

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 65SG5. Location - Paddock H5 on Salmon Gum Research Station

Cleared in 1962, then cropped until the start of the trial in 1968. Two of the four blocks were sown to Cyprus Barrel medic which is topdressed with superphosphate. The other two blocks regenerate volunteer pasture which is not topdressed. In 1984 all pasture plots were sown to SERENA medic. This grew exceptionally well in 1984 and set a lot of seed. In 1987 field peas were introduced into 4 reps of an existing medic: crop rotation.

Rates, Times And Sources Of Nitrogen On Wheat, J W. Bowden Jan 1987

Rates, Times And Sources Of Nitrogen On Wheat, J W. Bowden

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 87WH51

Location: Wongan Hills Research Station.

This trial was put onto a site adjacent to Mel Mason's source of nitrogen trial and the CSIRO, 15 N plots to provide some explanation of the results from the limited treatments in those trials. They were designed to monitor soil/fertiliser nitrogen transformations with time. Unfortunately the site of this trial was variable. The end most similar to the other trials was deeper and sandier and stored less water than the other and where crop growth was far better.

Isoproturon Evaluation - Timing Of Application On Efficacy And Crop Damage., R. Madin, J. Buckley

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

The trial was effectively a tolerance trial. Best overall weed control was achieved with Glean and the higher rates of Isoproturon which in turn gave best control as a pre-plant, incorporated treatment.

Post Emergence Weed Control In Lupins., R. Madin, J. Buckley Jan 1987

Post Emergence Weed Control In Lupins., R. Madin, J. Buckley

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

As a general assessment in can be said that Tigrex is a safe and efficient herbicide for control of radish in wheat. Brodal alone was generally unsatisfactory for radish control. While Diuron + Brodal was safe and efficient, Ally and Brodal should not be used together. Diuron + MCPA gave poorer control than one would normally expect.

Control Of Peas And Lupins In Wheat, J. R. Peirce, B. J. Rayner

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 87A29

Lupins were easier to kill than peas.

Glean applied pre-sowing gave very poor control of both peas and lupins.

The treatment using higher rates of 2,4-D amine in diuron mix also caused lower yields.

The Tordon 242 treatment appeared to cause some yield depression.

Control Of Prickly Saltwort (Salsola Kali) In Pasture., G. Fleay, R. Ramm Jan 1987

Control Of Prickly Saltwort (Salsola Kali) In Pasture., G. Fleay, R. Ramm

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trial 87LG65

Glean post-em @ 10 and 15 g/ha gave good control.

A later trial gave good control with Garlon 4800 or 2,4-D amine when sheep grazed the weed after treatment. Considerable pasture damage would be done with all chemicals during the growing season.
