A Feasibility Study Of Ultra-Short Echo Time Mri For Positive Contrast Visualization Of Prostate Brachytherapy Permanent Seed Implants For Post-Implant Dosimetry, Melissa Lamberto
A Feasibility Study Of Ultra-Short Echo Time Mri For Positive Contrast Visualization Of Prostate Brachytherapy Permanent Seed Implants For Post-Implant Dosimetry, Melissa Lamberto
LSU Master's Theses
Purpose: Ultra-short echo time (UTE) imaging is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that uses very short echo times (on the order of microseconds) to measure rapid T2 relaxation. An application of UTE is the visualization of magnetic susceptibility-induced shortening of T2 in tissues adjacent to metal, such as prostate tissue with implanted brachytherapy seeds. This study assessed UTE imaging of prostate brachytherapy seeds on a clinical 3T MRI scanner to provide images for post-implant dosimetry. Methods: A prostate tissue phantom was made of gelatin mixed with Gd and other materials to mimic the prostate peripheral zone’s T1 and T2 …

Effects Of Focused Instruction Process (Fip)On Student End-Of-Course Test (Predicting End-Of-Course Test Using Teacher-Made Test), Roland Damasco Dante
LSU Master's Theses
This study took place at a medium-sized suburban high school. It was designed to determine the usefulness of certain teacher-made tests in predicting students' end-of-course (EOC) tests. The teacher taught the students the skills in which their performance was weakest on the previous state test. The students were tested after each skill on a four-point quiz (teacher-made test). Students who scored 3—4 moved on to the next lesson or enrichment, while those who scored 0—2 were re-taught and re-tested. The procedure was repeated throughout the school year. At the end of the course, students took the state-mandated end-of-course test. The …
Growth And Mortality Of Spat, Seed, And Market-Sized Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Low Salinities And High Temperatures, Molly Marie Rybovich
Growth And Mortality Of Spat, Seed, And Market-Sized Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) In Low Salinities And High Temperatures, Molly Marie Rybovich
LSU Master's Theses
Changes in the timing and interaction of seasonal high temperatures and low salinity as predicted by climate change models could dramatically alter oyster population dynamics. Little is known explicitly about how low salinity and high temperature combinations affect spat (<25 mm), seed (26-75 mm), and market (>75 mm) oyster growth and mortality. Using lab and field studies, this project quantified the combined effects of extremely low salinities (< 5) and high temperatures (>30 oC) on growth and survival of spat, seed, and market-sized oysters. In 2012 and 2013, hatchery-produced oysters were placed in open and closed bags at three sites in Breton Sound, LA, along a salinity gradient which typically …25>
Temporal Variability Of Particulate Organic Carbon Fluxes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Somiddho Bosu
Temporal Variability Of Particulate Organic Carbon Fluxes In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Somiddho Bosu
LSU Master's Theses
There is limited data of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) export from the Northern Gulf of Mexico and this work presents the first estimation of the efficiency of the “biological pump” in this region. In oligotrophic oceans like the Gulf of Mexico, POC is the main source of particles and POC flux is the key mechanism for the removal of particle reactive contaminants and pollutants from upper ocean water column. Particle-reactive, the naturally occurring radionuclides are useful tracers of the sinking flux of organic matter from the surface to the deep ocean. The disequilibrium between natural radioisotope pair 238U-234Th as well …
Analysis Of Soil And Groundwater Microbial Population Dynamics At In Situ Bioremediation Sites In California And Texas, Farrar C. Stewart
Analysis Of Soil And Groundwater Microbial Population Dynamics At In Situ Bioremediation Sites In California And Texas, Farrar C. Stewart
LSU Master's Theses
Traditional methods for assessing in situ microbial communities often provide limited information on substrate utilization in bioremediation processes. The goal of this research was to assess new methods for describing the microbial communities found in the groundwater and affected contaminated soils documenting changes in community structure, population dynamics, substrate utilization and biodegradation of constituents of concern (CoC) during a site remediation. Two in situ bioremediation pilot studies using biological plugs are being conducted, one in the California San Francisco Bay Area (Sunnyvale) and one in the East Texas Piney Woods (Longhorn). The hypothesis is that changes in community structure, population …
Variations In Salinity And Temperature On The Flank Of An Offshore Louisiana Salt Structure, Candice M. Mccollum
Variations In Salinity And Temperature On The Flank Of An Offshore Louisiana Salt Structure, Candice M. Mccollum
LSU Master's Theses
Sediments located in the vicinity of salt structures in the northern Gulf of Mexico have highly complex structures and fluid dynamics associated with the dissolution and diapirism of salt. Past studies (Lin and Nunn, 1997; Bruno and Hanor, 2003; Richards, 2013) have shown that faults associated with salt structures can act both as migration pathways and barriers to the flow of formation waters. Bruno and Hanor (2003), Steen et al. (2011), and Richards (2013) also demonstrated that lithology was a controlling factor in the flow of formation waters. In this study, two sets of wireline logs, one used in salinity …
Task-Based Assessment In Middle School Mathematics, Jessica Gaboury
Task-Based Assessment In Middle School Mathematics, Jessica Gaboury
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis explores tasks as an appropriate classroom tool for assessing student understanding in the age of the Common Core State Standards. I describe numerous tasks that I composed and piloted in my 6th and 7th grade mathematics classrooms, common errors and problems that the students encountered and the difficulties and challenges that I had in developing, implementing and evaluating tasks. Making good tasks is time-consuming, and meaningful judgments of task quality can only be made when student work is carefully analyzed.

Preliminary Multifactorial Analysis Of Parkinson's Disease, Max James Miller
Preliminary Multifactorial Analysis Of Parkinson's Disease, Max James Miller
LSU Master's Theses
Neurodegenerative disorders affect millions of Americans every year. Incidence increases as the human population ages. Parkinson’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disorder in the dopaminergic system of the basal ganglia, causes deterioration of movement as the disease progresses. Researchers have attempted to figure out what causes PD and are currently examining it as an environmental disease. This study examined PD as an environmental disease using a multifactorial approach. Methods included 1) utilization of hospital and mortality records in order to investigate a relationship between occupation and PD 2) using ArcGIS 10.2 technology to examine the spatial components of PD 3) conducting Chi-Square …
Tube Current Modulated Computed Tomography Effective Dose And Size Specific Organ Dose Estimates With Impact: Total Scan Versus Slice By Slice Parameters For Urogram Protocols, David Wayne Byrd
LSU Master's Theses
Purpose: One of the predominant computed tomography (CT) dosimetry estimation programs, ImPACT, was not designed to estimate organ absorbed dose or effective dose for modern tube current modulated-CT (TCM-CT). ImPACT also only estimates organ doses for a standard adult hermaphrodite mathematical phantom, not for a specific patient. Two methods for calculating size specific TCM-CT organ absorbed dose and non-size dependent TCM-CT effective dose were developed and compared with conventional dose estimation methods. Methods: A sample of 48 TCM-CT urogram procedures was obtained. Patient specific dose was calculated for each data set by two methods. The first method was a summation …
Hydraulic Fracturing: A Look At Efficiency In The Haynesville Shale And The Environmental Effects Of Fracking, Emily Celeste Jackson
Hydraulic Fracturing: A Look At Efficiency In The Haynesville Shale And The Environmental Effects Of Fracking, Emily Celeste Jackson
LSU Master's Theses
Hydraulic fracturing has become a hot topic in America’s growing, domestic, oil and natural industry. This new technology has provided an economic way to extract resources from tight oil and gas shale formations found deep underground, but this new way of drilling does not come without environmental and human health effects. Among these health effects are water usage, water quality, and air quality. In this paper, data from Frac Focus.org was used to get the average amount of water used per well, and the average amount of chemicals, and what those chemicals are, for each well in the Haynesville Shale. …
Synthesis, Characterization, And Evaluation Of Novel Bodipy Dyes With Theranostic Applications, Jaime Suzanne Hayes
Synthesis, Characterization, And Evaluation Of Novel Bodipy Dyes With Theranostic Applications, Jaime Suzanne Hayes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, have garnered much attention in recent decades due to their enticing photophysical properties and their bioimaging applicability. Despite the progression of this field, the development of BODIPY based anti-cancer agents and radioimaging dyes has seen little progress. The utilization of fluorescent BODIPYs as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, and as boron delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy offers promise as theranostic agents. Additionally, BODIPY derivatives that absorb and emit in the near-IR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and bear radioisotopes suitable for radioimaging techniques are of great interest. Chapter 1 is a concise overview of the …
On The Infinitesimal Theory Of Chow Groups, Benjamin F. Dribus
On The Infinitesimal Theory Of Chow Groups, Benjamin F. Dribus
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. Except for the case p=1, which yields an algebraic group, the Chow groups remain mysterious. This thesis explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow …

Study Of ¹⁸Ne Using The Array For Nuclear Astrophysics And Structure With Exotic Nuclei, Laura Pratt
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Reactions involving radioactive nuclei play an important role in stellar explosions, but limited experimental information is available due to difficulties in producing and studying radioactive nuclei. Several facilities aim to provide greater access to these unstable isotopes at higher intensities, but more efficient and selective techniques and devices are required to be able to study many important reactions. The Array for Nuclear Astrophysics and Structure with Exotic Nuclei (ANASEN), a charged particle detector designed by Louisiana State University (LSU) and Florida State University (FSU), was created for this purpose. ANASEN is used to study the reactions important for the αp- …
Methods For The Characterization Of Deep-Sea Benthic Megafauna In The Vicinity Of The Deepwater Horizon Macondo Well, Stephanie Marie Sharuga
Methods For The Characterization Of Deep-Sea Benthic Megafauna In The Vicinity Of The Deepwater Horizon Macondo Well, Stephanie Marie Sharuga
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Soft-sediment benthic environments are amongst the largest marine ecosystems in the world and play important roles in many ecosystem functions. In recent years, exploitation of resources and unintentional impacts on deep-sea benthic environments has increased. The Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 in the northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) represented a prime example of this. The oil spill not only highlighted deficiencies of data and information on baseline conditions, but also represented an opportunity to learn more and develop better methods for the future. Deep-sea imaging platforms such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) have been …
Addressing The Land Loss-Fish Production Paradox, Kristy A. Lewis
Addressing The Land Loss-Fish Production Paradox, Kristy A. Lewis
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Saltmarsh loss is occurring at high rates in Louisiana (LA), but understanding the impacts that marsh degradation has had on historical abundance of estuarine nekton in Barataria Bay, LA is lacking. I first examined the differences between fishery independent and fishery dependent data as indices of relative abundance. Previous studies used landings data to evaluate the importance of marsh habitat (e.g. distance of marsh edge and area of intertidal marsh) to fisheries production, but for most species, landings and survey data showed differing patterns of abundance through time. These findings emphasize the importance of using survey data (not landings data) …
Untangling Earth System Responses Recorded In Sulfate's Sulfur And Oxygen Isotopes At The Dawn Of Multicellular Life And Today, Bryan Alan Killingsworth
Untangling Earth System Responses Recorded In Sulfate's Sulfur And Oxygen Isotopes At The Dawn Of Multicellular Life And Today, Bryan Alan Killingsworth
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Major Earth system perturbations in the deep past and today are recorded in sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotopes, as examined here in three cases. (1) Sedimentary sulfate record of the “Marinoan Oxygen-17 Depletion” (MOSD) event, implies ultra-high CO2 atmosphere at ~635 Ma after global glaciation. MOSD duration is constrained by correlating its most complete record to radiometric dates. Barium sulfate layers in South China sediments show the MOSD in lower layers but persistently absent up section. Carbon-13 correlation locates the MOSD within dated intervals from other sites, yielding a 0 - 0.99 Myr duration. Thus, sedimentary constraint on this non-steady-state …

Teaching Complex Numbers In High School, Esperanza Gotoman Chavez
LSU Master's Theses
One of the mathematics standards for high schools stated in the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS, 2010 Appendix A, p. 60) is the understanding of the Complex Number system, performing arithmetic operations with complex numbers, representing complex numbers and their operations on the complex plane, and using complex numbers in polynomial identities and equations. In this thesis, we trace back the history of complex numbers and formulate a set of problems based on the history. The thesis gives a description of the Common Core standards and goals. The exercises based on the history of complex numbers are shown to …

Topics In Quantum Metrology, Control, And Communications, Bhaskar Roy Bardhan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Noise present in an environment has significant impacts on a quantum system affecting properties like coherence, entanglement and other metrological features of a quantum state. In this dissertation, we address the effects of different types of noise that are present in a communication channel (or medium) and an interferometric setup, and analyze their effects in the contexts of preserving coherence and entanglement, phase sensitivity, and limits on rate of communication through noisy channels. We first consider quantum optical phase estimation in quantum metrology when phase fluctuations are introduced in the system by its interaction with a noisy environment. By considering …

Determination Of Predominant Species Of Oil-Degrading Bacteria In The Oiled Sediment In Barataria Bay, Louisiana, Lauren Nicole Navarre
LSU Master's Theses
The effects of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill on the bacterial communities in coastal sediments are relatively known but few studies have been published evaluating the impacts of the spill on oil-degrading bacterial populations in the salt marsh sediments of Barataria Bay, Louisiana. The aims of this study were to determine the effects of the oil spill on the microbial community in Barataria Bay, Louisiana through the determination of predominate species of oil-degrading bacteria in marsh sediments, and to determine how well certain bacterial isolates can degrade crude oil in the region by taking samples from three areas of …
Modeling Near Surface, Gas-Induced Seafloor Deformation Using Thin Plate Mechanics In The Thunder Horse Oil Field, Gulf Of Mexico And Ninilchik Field, Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska, Michael I. Thoma
LSU Master's Theses
Seabed topographic expressions such as pockmarks and domes caused by the vertical migration and accumulation of methane are found in muddy, cohesive sea beds around the world. These surface features range from 10-1000 m in diameter and 1-20 m in relief (Judd and Hovland, 2007). The mechanics of soft, cohesive sediment deformation due to overpressure from rising gas is not well understood or quantitatively defined despite the hazards they present to offshore drilling. Shallow gas pockets and overpressured sediments formed by the migration of subsurface gas to the seafloor can cause drilling blowouts, resulting in the release of large amounts …
A Treatment Planning Comparison Of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Therapy For A Sample Of Breast Cancer Patients Treated With Post-Mastectomy Radiotherapy, Margaret Hernandez
A Treatment Planning Comparison Of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy And Proton Therapy For A Sample Of Breast Cancer Patients Treated With Post-Mastectomy Radiotherapy, Margaret Hernandez
LSU Master's Theses
Purpose: The delivery of post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) can be challenging for patients with left-sided breast cancer due to the planning target volume (PTV) size and proximity to critical organs. This study investigates the use of protons, both passively scattered (PS) and intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT), for PMRT in a clinically-representative cohort of patients, and quantitatively compares the predicted outcomes of volumetric modulated photon arc therapy (VMAT) to those of proton therapy to develop an evidence-based rationale for selecting a treatment modality for PMRT patients. Methods: Eight left-sided PMRT patients previously treated at our clinic with VMAT were included in …
Characteristics Of High Energy Particle Interactions From The Study Of Irregular Air Showers, Amir Hosein Shadkam
Characteristics Of High Energy Particle Interactions From The Study Of Irregular Air Showers, Amir Hosein Shadkam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Since the discovery of cosmic rays about one century ago, there have been two main approaches in their experimental study. The first is analyzing their arrival directions, energies, and composition in order to determine the nature of their source or sources. The second is analysis of their interactions in the atmosphere to learn about the structure of elementary particles through the characteristics of their collisions at extremely high energy. The energy available in the collisions of cosmic ray protons with atmospheric nuclei exceeds greatly that achieved or achievable in any man-made accelerators. The study of these interactions may reveal the …
Effects Of Salinity And Temperature On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Of Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Shea A. Miller
Effects Of Salinity And Temperature On Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Of Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Shea A. Miller
LSU Master's Theses
Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has been proposed as an easy and accurate technique for a non-lethal index of condition in fish; however, factors affecting its accuracy have yet to be properly identified. The technique uses the resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) of water and lipids in contiguous tissues to estimate lipid content. Studies have investigated the use of BIA on fish, but with mixed results, possibly caused by unrecognized sources of influences. Our study explored possible sources of variance for BIA measurements in gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, through laboratory feeding and fasting experiments, and experimental exposures to acute changes in …

Assessment Of Habitat Quality For Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus, In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico: Natural Vs. Artificial Reefs, Brittany Dawn Schwartzkopf
LSU Master's Theses
Habitat quality of natural and artificial reefs for red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) is important as this area is home to the majority of the Gulf’s artificial reef system, in the form of oil and gas platforms, in addition to the largest extent of high vertical relief natural habitat. This study sought to assess habitat quality of natural reefs of varying habitat complexity and an artificial reef complex located on the LA continental shelf. Habitat quality was assessed by comparing red snapper diets and foraging patterns, and nutritional condition using the liver-somatic index (LSI) …

Effect Of Hydrologic, Geomorphic, And Vegetative Conditions On Avian Communities In The Middle Rio Grande Of New Mexico, Sarah G. Hamilton
LSU Master's Theses
Anthropogenic regulation of the Middle Rio Grande (MRG) of New Mexico has altered the hydrogeomorphology of the system and led to a rapid decline in breeding riparian-obligate birds as native riparian forests are replaced by exotic tamarisk stands. In this study, I evaluated the relationships among hydrogeomorphology, vegetation structure and composition, and avian communities of the San Acacia Reach (SAR) of the MRG. I conducted avian point count surveys and collected habitat data to determine avian community structure and abundance, geomorphic feature, surface flooding, and vegetation structure and composition along 44 transects throughout the SAR. A total of 999 point …
Fault Kinematics Along The Coastal Plain Of South Louisiana: Implications For Tectono-Climatic-Induced Deformation Along A Passive Continental Margin, Ali A. Al Dhamen
Fault Kinematics Along The Coastal Plain Of South Louisiana: Implications For Tectono-Climatic-Induced Deformation Along A Passive Continental Margin, Ali A. Al Dhamen
LSU Master's Theses
Kinematic analysis of faults along the northern coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico shows a correlation between pulses of faulting during the late Cenozoic and changes in the tectonic and climatic settings acting on the source areas which provide sediments to the Gulf. Pulses of faulting during the Oligocene-Early Miocene, Late Miocene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene correlate to major tectonic and climatic changes in the source region of sediments. Slip rates of faulting increase with younger events. The increase in slip rates is likely related to a combination of increase in sedimentation rates and pre-weakened Oligocene –Miocene rock that resulted …

Does Reproductive Potential Of Red Snapper In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Differ Among Natural And Artificial Habitats?, Hilary Day Glenn
LSU Master's Theses
This study compares the reproductive potential of red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) at artificial and natural habitats. Natural habitats are areas of vertical relief created from biogenic/geologic processes that are thought to be the historical centers of abundance for red snapper in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Red snapper were collected from 2011 to 2013 at three natural habitat sites and two artificial habitat oil and gas platform sites. The mean gonadosomatic indices (GSI), maturity at size and age, spawning indicators, batch fecundity, spawning frequency, and annual fecundity for red snapper at each habitat were analyzed to examine reproductive potential among …

Study Of The Low Energy Solar Neutrino Spectrometer (Lens) Concept With The Ulens Prototype, Liudmyla Afanasieva
LSU Master's Theses
Neutrinos are a useful tool that serves as an immediate probe of the Sun’s core providing insight into the details of the Sun’s energy production, internal composition and structure. Across the globe a number of solar neutrinos experiments have helped to clarify various characteristics of the solar neutrino spectrum. However, little experimental information is known regarding low-energy solar neutrinos, which comprise about 90% of the total solar neutrino spectrum. With this in mind, we are developing the Low Energy Solar Neutrino Spectrometer (LENS), an indium-based liquid scintillator detector with the capability to precisely measure the full spectrum of solar neutrinos, …
