Memory forensics is an important tool in the hands of investigators. However, determining if a computer is infected with malicious software is time consuming, even for experts. Tasks that require manual reverse engineering of code or data structures create a significant bottleneck in the investigative workflow. Through the application of emulation software and symbolic execution, these strains have been greatly lessened, allowing for faster and more thorough investigation. Furthermore, these efforts have reduced the barrier for forensic investigation, so that reasonable conclusions can be drawn even by non-expert investigators. As classical technology approaches its limits, exploration of quantum technologies is critical. Quantum optics will be the basis of various cutting-edge research and applications in quantum technology. In particular, quantum optics quite efficacious when applied to quantum networks and the quantum internet. Quantum Optomechanics, a subfield of quantum optics, contains some novel methods for entanglement generation. These entanglement production methods exploit the noise re-encoding process, which is most often associated with creating unwanted phase noise in optical circuits. Many coastal marshes are managed for wildlife through the use of levees and water control structures. Management techniques such as water manipulation, herbicide application, and controlled burns are used to set back succession and facilitate recruitment of annual plant species, which are highly sought after by many wildlife. These marsh impoundments alter or prevent natural tidal exchange, which might alter or prevent sediment and nutrient inputs to the marsh. Colloids are found in our everyday life from food and cosmetic industries to pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Depending on a global minimum of the free-energy landscape, colloidal suspensions can be classified as two major classes: equilibrium or active colloidal system. This dissertation investigates the hydro-morphodynamics of two major components of a sandy coastal environment: tidal inlets and embayment shorelines. In the first study, I focused on the evolution of inlet geometry by compiling and analyzing a database with 226 inlets worldwide with a special attention given to their width to depth ratio (or aspect ratio). I found that the aspect ratio has a weak dependency on tidal range and wave height, and they lie in different ranges for three types of tidal inlets: engineered, natural single-thread, and natural compound. A union of matter bounce and ekpyrotic scenarios is often studied in an attempt to combine the most promising features of these two models. Since nonperturbative quantum geometric effects in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) result in natural bouncing scenarios without any violation of energy conditions or fine tuning, an investigation of matter-ekpyrotic bounce scenario is interesting to explore in this quantum gravitational setting. The geochemical signatures imparted in major, minor, and trace elements, combined with light isotopes, suggest promising applications regarding the stabilization of meteorically altered limestone eolianites. Previous high-resolution studies have indicated that elements associated with carbonate diagenesis such as Mg and Sr can be valuable proxies for salinity and aragonite dissolution, respectively. In addition to testing these proxies, the analyses of several temperature-, diagenetic-, bioactive-, and redox-sensitive elements were evaluated using laser ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to identify additional indicators during carbonate diagenesis. The aim of this thesis is to develop a framework for assessing performance in quantum information processing with continuous variables. In particular, we focus on quantifying the fundamental limitations on communication and computation over bosonic Gaussian systems. Due to their infinite-dimensional structure, we make a realistic assumption of energy constraints on the input states of continuous-variable (CV) quantum operations. Our first contribution is to show that energy-constrained distinguishability measures can be used to establish tight upper bounds on the communication capacities of phase-insensitive, bosonic Gaussian channels -- thermal, amplifier, and additive-noise channels. Shale oil reservoirs are prolific on the short term due to hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling but experience significant production decline, leading to poor ultimate recovery and leaving billions of barrels of oil buried in the ground. In this study, a systematic multi-scale investigation of an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process using relatively inexpensive silicon dioxide nanoparticles and carbon dioxide for shale oil reservoirs was conducted. Using the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) as a case study, aqueous dispersions of nanosilica in conjunction with CO2 were investigated at nano-to-core scales. Coastal wetlands are experiencing threats to their long-term sustainability brought about by the combined effects of relative sea-level rise and human modifications to hydrology, sediment delivery and nutrient loading. Liquid crystal models with the capability of capturing defects has been one of the main focus in modeling the behavior of such phase mathematically. A uni-axially constrained Landau-de Gennes one-constant model, which has this capability was modeled using three minimization schemes - standard gradient descent, Nesterov accelerated gradient descent, and heavy-ball accelerated gradient descent. The uni-axially constrained Landau-de Gennes energy is discretized using finite element method and the performance of the minimization schemes are measured using the classical gradient descent scheme as the baseline. Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is the most common, sexually transmitted bacterial disease (STD) in the world. In the developmental cycle of CT, specific chlamydia chaperone 4 (Scc4) is a unique protein with essential and multiple roles. Hence, Scc4 is significant as a virulence target for therapeutic approaches to treat chlamydial infections. A novel approach was discovered to purify tag free Scc4 by utilizing a 6X-histidine-tag on Scc1 in the co-expressed Scc4:Scc1 complex by capturing the complex on nickel-charged immobilized metal affinity chromatography resin, followed by dissociation of Scc4 with sarkosyl. This dissertation is a collection of work on matroid and polymatroid connectivity. Connectivity is a useful property of matroids that allows a matroid to be decomposed naturally into its connected components, which are like blocks in a graph. The Cunningham-Edmonds tree decomposition further gives a way to decompose matroids into 3-connected minors. Much of the research below concerns alternate senses in which matroids and polymatroids can be connected. The purpose of this dissertation is to describe the efforts undertaken to develop synthetic methodology targeting δ-valerolactone and isocoumarin. At the onset, an introduction to the δ-valerolactone and isocoumarin is given. Relevant examples of δ-valerolactone being utilized in the production of materials of biological and industrial application are then discussed. Following, current methods for forming δ-valerolactone are presented. After, an introduction to isocoumarin is begun. Current methods for producing isocoumarin are then discussed.

In this dissertation we analyze how Majorana quasiparticles found on material interfaces of both topological insulators (TIs) and topological superconductors (TSCs) are affected by imperfections within their local environment. While these quasiparticles are predicted to be critical for the construction of quantum computers, they are typically modeled only under pristine conditions. Thus, although quantum computers may require the spatial manipulation of Majorana quasiparticles, these topological material interfaces are commonly studied in static contexts and their response to manipulation remains an open question. The aim of this thesis is to highlight applications of quantum optics in two very distinct fields: space-based quantum communication and the Hawking effect in analogue gravity. Regarding the former: We simulate and analyze a constellation of satellites, equipped with entangled photon-pair sources, which provide on-demand entanglement distribution ser- vices to terrestrial receiver stations. Satellite services are especially relevant for long-distance quantum-communication scenarios, as the loss in satellite-based schemes scales more favor- ably with distance than in optical fibers or in atmospheric links, though establishing quantum resources in the space-domain is expensive. Suppose $(\M,\xi)$ be an overtwisted contact 3-manifold. We prove that any Legendrian and transverse link in $(\M,\xi)$ having overtwisted complement can be coarsely classified by their classical invariants. Next, we defined an invariant called the support genus for transverse links and extended the definition of support genus of Legendrian knots to Legendrian links and prove that any coarse equivalence class of Legendrian and transverse loose links has support genus zero. Further, we show that the converse is not true by explicitly constructing an example. We also find a relationship between the support genus of the transverse link and its Legendrian …

We characterize preduals and Kothe duals to a class of Sobolev multiplier type spaces. Our results fit in well with the modern theory of function spaces of harmonic analysis and are also applicable to nonlinear partial differential equations. As a maneuver, we make use of several tools from nonlinear potential theory, weighted norm inequalities, and the theory of Banach function spaces to obtain our results. After characterizing the preduals, we establish a capacitary strong type inequality which resolves a special case of a conjecture by David R. Adams. This dissertation is devoted to the study of three-dimensional (regularized) stochastic Navier-Stokes equations with Markov switching. A Markov chain is introduced into the noise term to capture the transitions from laminar to turbulent flow, and vice versa. The existence of the weak solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis) is shown by studying the martingale problem posed by it. This together with the pathwise uniqueness yields existence of the unique strong solution (in the sense of stochastic analysis). The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab reports a total excess of 638.0 +/- 52.1(stat) +/- 122.2(syst) electronlike events from a data sample corresponding to 18.75 x 10(20) protons-on-target in neutrino mode, which is a 46% increase in the data sample with respect to previously published results and 11.27 x 10(20) protons-on-target in antineutrino mode. The overall significance of the excess, 4.8 sigma, is limited by systematic uncertainties, assumed to be Gaussian, as the statistical significance of the excess is 12.2 sigma.
