Quaternary River Erosion, Provenance, And Climate Variability In The Nw Himalaya And Vietnam, Tara Nicole Jonell
Quaternary River Erosion, Provenance, And Climate Variability In The Nw Himalaya And Vietnam, Tara Nicole Jonell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The influence of Quaternary climate variation on sediment generation, storage, and transport in two mountainous Asian river basin was examined in the largest tributary to the upper Indus River in the Himalayan rain shadow, the Zanskar River basin (~15,000 km2), and the smaller, subtropical Song Gianh basin (<3,500 km2) of central Vietnam. Spatial patterns of erosion in the Zanskar River Basin were established to quantify the dominant controls on Quaternary sedimentation in the Himalayan rain shadow on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Glacial erosion and precipitation along the High Himalaya together dominate sediment production and transport …3,500>

LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, we will give a generating set of the Kauffman bracket skein module over the field Q(A) of 0-framed surgery along the trefoil knot. This generating set is described as a certain subset of a known basis for the skein module over Z[A^±1] of the trefoil exterior.
Numerical Simulations Of Mass Transfer In Close And Contact Binaries Using Bipolytropes, Kundan Vaman Kadam
Numerical Simulations Of Mass Transfer In Close And Contact Binaries Using Bipolytropes, Kundan Vaman Kadam
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
We present the first self-consistent, three dimensional study of hydrodynamic simulations of mass transfer in close and contact binary systems, with both stars represented as bipolytropes (composite polytopes). The project is motivated by the recent eruption of V1309 Scorpii which was proved to be the merger of a contact binary system. The final eruption is assumed to be the disruption of the core of the secondary inside the more massive star. The initial, equilibrium binary models are rotating synchronously in circular orbits and are obtained using the Bipolytropic Self Consistent Field (BSCF) technique, which is a modi cation of Hachisu's …

Shallow Shear-Wave Seismic Analysis Of Point Bar Deposits Of False River, Louisiana, Martial James Morrison
Shallow Shear-Wave Seismic Analysis Of Point Bar Deposits Of False River, Louisiana, Martial James Morrison
LSU Master's Theses
Current point-bar complex models do not include subsurface unit bars as a normal feature. This study provides evidence for a potential buried unit bar amongst point-bar sediments of the large-scale, modern-day False River point-bar complex of the Mississippi River. We collect, process and interpret a two-dimensional, 150-m-long CMP seismic reflection profile that cuts perpendicularly across a major discontinuity surface in the False River point bar complex. The seismic source consists of a ground recoil device that fires a shotgun shell horizontally, producing shear waves. Multiple field experiments demonstrated which type of source and receiver provided the least amount of noise, …

Our main objective is to help content creators to effectively understand the needs and concerns of their viewers, thus respond faster to these concerns and deliver higher-quality …
Interactive Web-Based Visualization Of Atomic Position-Time Series Data, Simron Thapa
Interactive Web-Based Visualization Of Atomic Position-Time Series Data, Simron Thapa
LSU Master's Theses
Extracting and interpreting the information contained in large sets of time-varying three dimensional positional data for the constituent atoms of simulated material system is a challenging task. This thesis work reports our initial implementation of a web-based visualization system and its use-case study. The system allows the users to perform the desired visualization task on a web browser for the position-time series data extracted from the local or remote hosts. It involves a pre-processing step for data reduction, which involves skipping uninteresting parts of the data uniformly (at full atomic configuration level) or non-uniformly (at atomic species level or individual …
Microseismic Event Characteristics Associated With The Spatial And Temporal Stages Of Hydraulic Fracture Growth In Laboratory Experiments, Abigail Arielle Maxwell
Microseismic Event Characteristics Associated With The Spatial And Temporal Stages Of Hydraulic Fracture Growth In Laboratory Experiments, Abigail Arielle Maxwell
LSU Master's Theses
There are uncertainties in the exact mechanisms that occur during hydraulic fracture growth and the interactions of hydraulic fractures with pre-existing fractures. In some cases fracture growth is seen to be purely tensile and in others a combination of tensile and shear mechanisms. In order to develop a seismic model to explain fracture propagation, there is a need for a complete classification of the microseismic events occurring during fracturing using waveform characteristics such as frequency, duration and magnitude. This classification would allow for more accurate prediction of the behavior of the hydraulic fracture from its initiation to when it intersects …
The Effectiveness Of Isco Injection Methods For Remediation Of Groundwater, Matthew Ryan Vidrine
The Effectiveness Of Isco Injection Methods For Remediation Of Groundwater, Matthew Ryan Vidrine
LSU Master's Theses
In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) injections were performed at Petro Stopping Centers # 10 (Petro) in December 2013 and June 2015. The methodology was direct injection of a heavy oxidizer, RegenOx®, followed by a time-release oxygen compound, ORC Advanced®, into a plume of gasoline sitting on top of the water in the aquifer in hope that this remediate the aquifer. Both chemicals are registered trademarks of the Regenesis® Company. The levels of contaminates have dropped considerably. However, Petro has not achieved closure criteria according to RECAP standards. The site is classified as a GW-1B, subject to the most stringent of remediation …
Pesticide Concentrations In Water From A Southern Louisiana Marsh Influenced By The Mississippi River, Kara Leigh Callicott
Pesticide Concentrations In Water From A Southern Louisiana Marsh Influenced By The Mississippi River, Kara Leigh Callicott
LSU Master's Theses
The pesticides atrazine, chlorothalonil, and fipronil are common surface water contaminants due to their high rates of application and their chemical properties. This study investigates the introduction of contaminants into coastal wetlands via the Bayou Lamoque Mississippi River control structure in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. A protocol for environmental sampling using Continuous Low-level Aquatic Monitoring (C.L.A.M.) C-18 disks is described, along with effective solid phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methodology for the determination of atrazine, chlorothalonil, and fipronil in surface water. Average concentrations of atrazine and chlorothalonil inside the Bayou Lamoque freshwater diversion structure for the months …
Assessing And Modeling Community Resilience To Coastal Hazards Using A Bayesian Network, Heng Cai
Assessing And Modeling Community Resilience To Coastal Hazards Using A Bayesian Network, Heng Cai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation presents the assessment and modeling of community resilience to coastal hazards in the Lower Mississippi River Basin (LMRB) in southeastern Louisiana at the census block group scale. The first part is to provide a quantitative method to assess and validate the community resilience index to coastal hazards and identify the relationships between a set of socio-environmental indicators and community resilience. The Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model was applied to assess the resilience of the block groups. The resilience index derived was empirically validated through two statistical procedures: K-means cluster analysis of three variables (exposure, damage, and recovery) to …
Modelling And Observational Evidence For The Igneous Evolution Of The Elysium Volcanic Province On Mars, David Andrew Susko
Modelling And Observational Evidence For The Igneous Evolution Of The Elysium Volcanic Province On Mars, David Andrew Susko
LSU Master's Theses
A major knowledge gap exists on how eruptive compositions of a single martian volcanic province change over time. The Elysium Volcanic Province is a location of great geologic interest on Mars. Its predominantly Amazonian surface age (beginning 3.3 Ga), and its isolation in the northern hemisphere of Mars away from other volcano-tectonic regions, make it an ideal locale to investigate igneous compositions erupted during the most recent geologic period on Mars. Here, this work seeks to fill that gap by assessing the compositional evolution of Elysium as a major martian volcanic province in two related projects. The first project seeks …
Asymptotic Formulae For Restricted Unimodal Sequences, Richard Alexander Frnka
Asymptotic Formulae For Restricted Unimodal Sequences, Richard Alexander Frnka
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Additive enumeration problems, such as counting the number of integer partitions, lie at the intersection of various branches of mathematics including combinatorics, number theory, and analysis. Extending partitions to integer unimodal sequences has also yielded interesting combinatorial results and asymptotic formulae, which form the subject of this thesis. Much like the important work of Hardy and Ramanujan proving the asymptotic formula for the partition function, Auluck and Wright gave similar formulas for unimodal sequences. Following the circle method of Wright, we provide the asymptotic expansion for unimodal sequences with odd parts. This is then generalized to a two-parameter family of …
Ex-Companions Of Supernovae Progenitors, Zhichao Xue
Ex-Companions Of Supernovae Progenitors, Zhichao Xue
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Supernovae (SNe) are titanic explosions that end the life of stars. Fast expanding ejecta can create brightness that is comparable to the entire luminosity of the host galaxy for weeks. Eventually, the ejecta run into the ambient medium, creating the so-called supernova remnant (SNR) that fades away in ~ 10,000 years. SNe come from two completely different mechanisms. The Type Ia SNe (SNIa) are powered by thermonuclear runaway when a white dwarf (WD) in a binary system accretes enough mass from a companion star. The Core Collapse supernovae (CCSNe) are massive stars that run out of fuel at the end …
Measuring The Effects Of Recycled Water On The Growth Of Three Algal Species: Tisochrysis Lutea, Chaetcoeros Calcitrans, And C. Muelleri In A Commercial-Scale Oyster Hatchery, Lisa Marie Bourassa
Measuring The Effects Of Recycled Water On The Growth Of Three Algal Species: Tisochrysis Lutea, Chaetcoeros Calcitrans, And C. Muelleri In A Commercial-Scale Oyster Hatchery, Lisa Marie Bourassa
LSU Master's Theses
Algal production is often the limiting factor in large-scale oyster hatcheries, and constant, reliable production is required to grow enough algae to support all oyster larvae and broodstock grown and conditioned in a hatchery. The algal rooms in the Michael C. Voisin Oyster Hatchery at Grand Isle, LA are temperature-controlled to maintain consistent temperature, but this hatchery is also unique in its ability to recycle natural seawater pumped from the northern Gulf of Mexico. Effects of recycling seawater on algal production in an oyster hatchery, however, are undocumented. In this study, Tisochrysis lutea, Chaetoceros calcitrans and C. muelleri were grown …
Symbolic And Deep Learning Based Data Representation Methods For Activity Recognition And Image Understanding At Pixel Level, Manohar Karki
Symbolic And Deep Learning Based Data Representation Methods For Activity Recognition And Image Understanding At Pixel Level, Manohar Karki
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Efficient representation of large amount of data particularly images and video helps in the analysis, processing and overall understanding of the data. In this work, we present two frameworks that encapsulate the information present in such data. At first, we present an automated symbolic framework to recognize particular activities in real time from videos. The framework uses regular expressions for symbolically representing (possibly infinite) sets of motion characteristics obtained from a video. It is a uniform framework that handles trajectory-based and periodic articulated activities and provides polynomial time graph algorithms for fast recognition. The regular expressions representing motion characteristics can …
The Role Of Defects In The Metal-Nonmetal Transition In Metallic Oxide Films, Gaomin Wang
The Role Of Defects In The Metal-Nonmetal Transition In Metallic Oxide Films, Gaomin Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Metal-nonmetal transition, or more specifically, metal-insulator transition (MIT) has been one of the most intriguing topics in condensed matter physics. Two theories describing fundamental driving mechanisms of MIT has been well-established over time: Mott-Hubbard theory and Anderson localization theory. The former mainly deals with contribution of electron interactions/correlations to the MIT, and the latter focuses on the role of disorder. However, it is an open topic how a system behaves when both effects exist in a system. This study mostly takes interest in a type of MIT induced by dimensionality-crossover in the transition metal oxides (TMOs) systems. TMO system is …
Moduli Spaces Of Flat Gsp-Bundles, Neal David Livesay
Moduli Spaces Of Flat Gsp-Bundles, Neal David Livesay
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A classical problem in the theory of differential equations is the classification of first-order singular differential operators up to gauge equivalence. A related algebro-geometric problem involves the construction of moduli spaces of meromorphic connections. In 2001, P. Boalch constructed well-behaved moduli spaces in the case that each of the singularities are diagonalizable. In a recent series of papers, C. Bremer and D. Sage developed a new approach to the study of the local behavior of meromorphic connections using a geometric variant of fundamental strata, a tool originally introduced by C. Bushnell for the study of p-adic representation theory. Not only …
