Molecular Treatment Of Charge Transfer In Li+ +Ca Collisions, M. Kimura, H. Sato, Ronald E. Olson

The perturbed-stationary-state method, appended with electron translation factors, has been applied to charge transfer in Li+ +Ca collisions for energies from 0.1 to 20 keV/amu. The Born-Oppenheimer wave functions and eigenvalues were generated using the pseudopotential technique, which reduced the many-electron system to a simpler two-electron problem. The molecular ground-state X +1 is calculated to be bound and has the potential-well parameters Re=6.20a0, De=1.11 eV, e=235 cm-1, and Be=0.263 cm-1. From the scattering computations, a representative value for the charge-transfer cross section is 4x10-15 cm2 at 5 keV/amu. The cross section decreases rapidly as the energy is reduced below 1 …

The Use of a Differential Mobility Analyzer to Perform Aerosol Size Spectrum Measurements Requires an Inversion Method to Go from the Measured Sensor Responses to the Desired Size Spectrum Information. Here We Present a Linear Inversion Method that Can Be Run on a Microcomputer or a Small Minicomputer. It Does Not Use Some of the Approximations Made in the Techniques Currently Available and Hence Gives Better Inversion Accuracy. the Method Shows Good Immunity to Both Random and Systematic Experimental Error. On The Schrödinger Spin‐Exchange Ferromagnet, Harry A. Brown

The thermodynamic behavior of a ferromagnet whose interactions are described by the Schrödinger spin‐exchange operator is investigated. The transition temperatures, magnetization, susceptibility, exchange energy, heat capacity, and entropy are calculated for general spin and lattice coordination number using the constant‐coupling approximation. Both first‐ and second‐order phase transitions are found. Comparison with some results of the high‐temperature expansion method shows some qualitative agreement. The Ce(IV)-mediated decarboxylation of N-benzyliminodiacetic acid (BIDA) produces benzaldehyde, formaldehyde, dimethylamine, benzylmethylamine, and N-benzylglycine in acidic perchlorate and acidic sulfate media. Spectrophotometric evidence of an intermediate Ce(IV)-BIDA complex is given. The data may be interpreted in terms of a mechanism which involves sequential reactions, the first of which is a reversible reaction: BIDA + Ce(IV) (k1) ⇄ (k-1) complex (k2) → products. The rapid complex formation is followed by a slower oxidative decomposition to give a free radical capable of inducing free-radical polymerization. The free radical reacts rapidly with another Ce(IV) to give an iminium ion which undergoes either hydrolysis …

Infarction Secondary to Cerebral Embolism Was Diagnosed in 127 (23.5%) of 540 Patients in the Michael Reese Stroke Registry. Coronary Artery Disease, Atrial Fibrillation, Valvular Heart Disease, Mitral Annulus Calcification, and Cardiomyopathy Were the Commonest Etiologies. Echocardiography Documented a Potential Embolic Source in 7 Patients Without Previously Known Heart Disease and Clarified the Cardiac Pathology in Many of the Patients with Known Heart Disease. the Left Anterior Circulation Was Affected in 48%, Right Anterior in 37%, and Posterior Circulation in 15% of patients. CT Was Abnormal in 71% of the Patients and Was Approximately Equally Helpful in All Locations. Nineteen …

A new gas permeable contact lens is produced using a solid silicone core and a plasma polymer surface. This surface is hydrophilic and impermeable to macromolecules. The surface characteristics of this lens were compared with the surface characteristics of available silicone contact lenses. We found that in contrast to our lens, the silicone contact lenses lost their hydrophilic surface with time. Intermolecular interaction between pairs of methylphosphocholine (MPC) and methylphosphoethanolamine were calculated using an extended CNDO/2 program. Experimentally determined conformations were used for the ethanolamine and choline groups. In the methylphosphocholine the major interaction was intramolecular, involving the phosphate ester-choline groups, while in the ethanolamine the maximum attraction was intermolecular between the ethanolamine and the phophate ester of a neighboring molecule(s). © 1983.

"The Precambrian volcanics in the Des Arc NE 7½ minute quadrangle are composed predominantly of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs with minor rhyolitic, trachytic, and andesitic lavas, and basaltic dikes. Thirty-seven volcanic units were identified, mapped, and informally named. A minimum of 1,000 meters of volcanic section is present. The rhyolites consist of phenocrysts of albitized alkali feldspar, albitic plagioclase, quartz, opaques, and ferromagnesium relicts set in a devitrified and locally recrystallized felsitic matrix. Pumice and lithophysal structures are common in the ash flows.

Chemically, the rhyolites are quite similar. The potassium to sodium ratio in individual units, however, tends to vary …

"Model interaction potentials for H2O on a basal f)-silver iodide substrate containing two types of defects, a potassium impurity and a four atomic layer ledge, are used to calculate optimal binding energy contours for the adsorbed H2O molecule. (J. Phys. Chern. 84, 1473(1980)). The model substrate with the potassium impurity appears to increase the optimal binding energy at the preferred adsorption sites to 23 kcal/rnol -- a value approximately 40 % larger than the maximal binding energy sites on the defect-free model silver-exposed basal plane of AgI. When two atoms are in proximity, their resonance lines are broadened because of the formation of molecular potentials, between which photon transitions can occur. The level of experimental refinement in measuring excimer and collisional far-wing spectra calls for interpretive theoretical methods that accurately treat the observed structure in line shapes. Of particular interest are satellites and undulations, for they can give much information on intermolecular potentials. We derive an expression for T-matrix elements, based on JWKB wave functions and stationary-phase techniques, that is universally applicable to situations with one, two, or more Condon points. Thermal Decomposition Kinetics Of Iodine‐Doped Polyacetylene In Vacuum, J. ‐E Osterholm, H. Yasuda, L. L. Levenson

The thermal stability of iodine‐doped polyacetylene films, (CHIy)x, has been studied by means of electrical conductivity measurements, measurements on weight loss, and mass spectrometric analysis of desorbing species. When heated between room temperature and 125°C in vacuum, these films proved to be of poor thermal stability, being unstable at temperatures above 20°C. During the thermal treatments, molecular iodine desorbs from the films, resulting in an appreciable dopant weight loss with accompanying decrease in the electrical conductivity. The authors have used a fast expansion chamber to measure the homogeneous nucleation rate of toluene as a function of temperature and supersaturation. The measured nucleation rate ranges from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 s over a temperature range of 215-267 K. The measurements are compared with the "classical" nucleation theory and with the RKC theory. The inclusion of the RKC replacement factor brings the data into good agreement with theory using physically realistic values of the surface tension and the sticking coefficient. Electron-capture, ionization, and recoil-ion-production cross-sections are measured and calculated for fast highly charged projectiles in hydrogen and rare-gas targets. Time-resolved optical transmission has been studied using 633 and 514 nm CW probes on ion-implantation-amorphized silicon-on-sapphire during annealing by a 10 nsec, ⊥ J/cm2 pulse at either 532 nm or 485 nm. As recrystallization sets in the transmitted signal at 514 nm rises by ⊥ 103 in ⊥ 60 nsec and provides a measure of regrowth velocity. Beyond 200 nsec the much slower transmission rise is used to provide an estimate of the Si cooling rate. The difference in transmission observed between initially crystalline and initially amorphous Si provide an estimate of the latent heat of recrystallization of the amorphous …

State-to-state cross sections are reported for vibrational-rotational transitions for HF in collisions with He, at collisional energies of 0.5 and 1.0 eV. These were computed within the infinite-order sudden (IOS) approximation using adiabatic, distorted-wave techniques. Values are tabulated for the vibrational-rotational deexcitation sequences (v,j)→(v-1, 0), with v=1, 2, 3, 4 and j=0-40. These quenching cross sections can be used in conjunction with IOS factorization formulas to compute VRT cross sections for final rotational states other jf=0. In addition to IOS results, vibrational quenching cross sections were computed using the much more simple breathing-sphere technique. The breathing-sphere results compare favorably to …

"In the Wichita province of southwestern Oklahoma the Cold Springs Breccia Formation, exposed in a 15 km2 area in Kiowa County, is characterized by blocks and pillows of microdiorite surrounded by pink granite. Intimately associated with this mixed zone are sill-like bodies of intermediate rocks, granodiorites and tonalites. The intermediate rocks have been interpreted as hybrids produced by assimilation of microdiorite by granitic magma, and the mixed zone has been interpreted as an intrusion breccia formed at the margins of the hybrid sills.

"The Tuff of Pritchards Station in east-central Nevada is a little-known ash-flow tuff of limited areal extent. A detailed study of this tuff was conducted to determine if it is a distinctive unit which can be correlated from one locality to another.

Mineralogical and chemical data indicate that the Tuff of Pritchards Station displays significant lateral variability. Lateral variations in mineralogy include changes in total crystal content and the amount and grain size of individual minerals present over the area studied. Chemically, the tuff is a quartz latite to rhyodacite in composition. However, certain elements, most noteably titanium, show considerable …

"The homogeneous nucleation rate of nonane has been measured using an expansion cloud chamber. Data were obtained for pre-expansion temperatures of 45°C, 35°C, 25°C, 15°C, 5°C, and -5°C. The measured nucleation rate ranges from 102 to 105 drops/cm3 -sec over a temperature range of 216 K to 270 K. The data set is sufficiently extensive to provide a detailed test for nucleation theories applied to nonane. The measured rates are compared with the "classical" nucleation theory and with a modified classical theory using the replacement factor of Reiss, Katz and Cohen (RKC). It is found that neither …

"A tin layer was immersion plated onto a zinc-silicon containing aluminum alloy by using a potassium stannate solution. Conventional aluminum pretreatment was used before immersion plating.

Effects of immersion time with immersion tin thickness and Al-Sn adhesion were studied. Conditions of subsequent Sn-Pb electroplating on Sn plated aluminum samples were investigated.

The Michigan basin is widely acknowledged to be the archetype among those basins of cratonic interiors whose subsidence is dominated by flexure rather than faulting. Broadly ovate in plan over an area of some hundreds of thousands of square kilometers, with a preserved Phanerozoic sediment thickness exceeding 4 km accumulated during distinct episodes of subsidence over a 500-million year span, the basin is endowed with significant fossil-fuel resources.

The basin area is crossed, from north-northwest, by a rift zone filled with mafic igneous rock and great thickness of sedimentary rock resting on Archean and Middle Proterozoic crystallines. Rifting is presumably …

The Arkoma basin is a structurally defined basin that underlies an area of about 13,000 sq. mi. It extends from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Atoka, Oklahoma. The rocks in the basin grade upward from dolomite, some limestone, sandstone (Upper Cambrian to Upper Devonian) to shale and limestone (Upper Devonian to Lower Pennsylvanian) to shale, limestone, and sandstone (Lower Pennsylvanian) to shale and sandstone (Middle Pennsylvanian). The sediments that formed rocks in the lower part of the Atoka formation on the south side of the basin were deposited in a deep-water environment. The basement underlying the deeper basins in the Midcontinent is not well known because of the considerable thickness of overlying sedimentary rocks. However, gravity and magnetic surveys and sparse wells to basement suggest that deeper intracratonic basins are characteristically underlain by denser and more magnetic rocks than in adjacent areas. This correlation has important bearing on understanding the tectonic development and geologic history of Midcontinent basins.

Since Precambrian time, zones of weakness have been repeatedly but infrequently reactivated in the Mississippi Embayment area. All of the major folds and many of the minor anticlines caused by this activity are associated with faults in the basement rocks. The latest occurrence of major tectonic activity (perhaps Early Cretaceous), however, not only affected the old fault zones but also created a vast new feature, the Pascola arch, which has no Paleozoic antecedent. Severe erosion and subsequent Tertiary subsidence associated with the Pascola arch indicate that this structure alone is the locus of present-day major earthquake activity. Until the time …

As petroleum exploration efforts in the Midcontinent become directed toward smaller fields and the search for minerals is extended into new areas, the edges of the Salina and Forest City basins will become of increased interest to industry. The principal boundary feature between the two basins is the Nemaha ridge, a linear feature that extends from near Omaha, Nebraska, to near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Williston basin of North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, and south-central Canada (Manitoba and Saskatchewan) is a major producer of oil and gas, lignite, and potash. Located on the western periphery of the Phanerozoic North American craton, the Williston basin has undergone only relatively mild tectonic distortion during Phanerozoic time. This distortion is largely related to movement of Precambrian basement blocks.

Sedimentary rocks of cratonic sequences Sauk through Tejas are present in the basin. Sauk, Tippecanoe, and Kaskaskia Sequence rocks are largely carbonate, as are the major oil and gas producing formations. Absaroka and Zuni rocks have more clastic content, …

Single electron capture and ionization cross sections have been calculated for H++Li and He2++Li collisions at energies ranging from 50 to 400 keV amu-1. Double electrons capture cross sections are presented for the He2++Li system. The classical-trajectory Monte Carlo method and the independent-electron model were used to calculate the cross sections. In the energy range investigated, the ionization process is dominated by electron removal of the valence Li(2s) electron, whereas the single and double electron capture processes are the result of capture from the K shell of the lithium atom.

On The Ising Model For Amorphous Ferromagnets, Harry A. Brown

A calculation is made of the effect on the critical temperature of a ferromagnet whose exchange integrals are taken to be random variables. The Bethe-Peierls-Weiss approximation is used to find the partition function, Z, for an Ising system and then a configuration average is taken to find (InZ), from which the resulting decrease in the critical temperature can be found. Other results are discussed, and comparisons made with the present result.
