Heavy Metals In The Main Streams Of The James River Basin, Missouri, Richard Jerome Lance Jan 1973

Heavy Metals In The Main Streams Of The James River Basin, Missouri, Richard Jerome Lance

Masters Theses

"Demands on water resources in the James River basin have greatly increased. Industrial plants and lead-zinc prospects in the basin are potential sources of heavy metal additions to the waters of the area. The study determines the heavy metal content and distribution in the streams of the basin.

Approximately 50 water samples were collected each season and analyzed by atomic absorption techniques. Field determinations of temperature, specific conductance, pH, and effective alkalinity were also made.

Ranges of heavy metal content were: (1) mercury- <0. 1 to 0.3 ppb (summer only); (2) zinc-

The urban areas of Springfield contribute dissolved heavy metals to the surface streams. The Southwest Springfield Sewage …

Multispectral Analysis Of Erts Imagery By Color Enhancement, John F. Peters Jan 1973

Multispectral Analysis Of Erts Imagery By Color Enhancement, John F. Peters

Masters Theses

"The Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) program has supplied the scientist with high resolution multispectral imagery of a large portion or the earth. Photographic and electronic methods of image enhancement are not universally available to those who might profit from such endeavors.

Diazo products were found to be satisfactory for creation of false color enhancement of ERTS multispectral data. The purpose of the enhancement was to make the Diazochrome composite comparable to more sophisticated methods for the purpose of interpretation. The basis of the enhancement was the standard false color infrared composite, with negative and positive Diazochrome masks to enhance …

Monte Carlo Simulation Of Confidence Intervals For Reliability, Kathryn Palisch Berkbigler Jan 1973

Monte Carlo Simulation Of Confidence Intervals For Reliability, Kathryn Palisch Berkbigler

Masters Theses

"A computer program which computes fiducial confidence intervals for reliability by Monte Carlo simulation has been written. The program has the capability of computing these intervals for general systems of series, parallel, and mixed series and parallel subsystems which have failure time distributions which are either exponential, Weibull, gamma, normal, or lognormal.

Comparison of the simulation technique with a Bayesian technique for computing confidence intervals in the case of a series of exponentially distributed components shows that the two methods agree quite well when a fiducial prior distribution for reliability is used in the Bayesian technique. A uniform prior distribution …

Absolute Differential Elastic And Inelastic Cross Sections In 25-140 Kev He⁺ + He Collisions, Victor Pol

Doctoral Dissertations

"The UMR heavy-ion energy-loss spectrometer has been modified to study the angular dependence of elastic and inelastic scattering for 25-140 keV He+ incident on He. The data were obtained as energy-loss spectra at angles from 0 to 7.3 x 10-3 rad (c.m.) with energy-loss resolution of 0.6 to 1.0 eV and angular resolution of 1.2 x 10-3 to 2.4 x 10-3 rad (c.m.). From the spectra we have calculated average differential cross sections for elastic scattering, direct excitation of the individual He(n=2) states and direct excitation of the He+(n=2) states. By integrating the differential …

Anionic Polymerization Of A Series Of 5-Membered Cyclocarbosiloxanes, Balaraman Suryanarayanan Jan 1973

Anionic Polymerization Of A Series Of 5-Membered Cyclocarbosiloxanes, Balaraman Suryanarayanan

Doctoral Dissertations

"A study has been made on the anionic polymerization of a series of 5-membered cyclocarbosiloxanes with methyl and/or phenyl substituents. The polymerization was initiated by lithium n-butyldiphenylsilanolate in the presence of tetrahydrofuran. Six 5-membered cyclocarbosiloxanes (2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,2,5- trimethyl-5-phenyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-diphenyl- 1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,2-dimethyl-5 ·,5-diphenyl-1-oxa- 2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2-methyl-2,5,5-triphenyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane; 2,2,5,5-tetraphenyl-1-oxa-2,5-disilacyclopentane) were synthesized. Since the chemical shifts of the protons of the cyclic monomers and the polymers formed were different, the rate of polymerization of the cyclic monomers was measured utilizing an NMR spectrometer. The effects of tetrahydrofuran concentration, initiator concentration and water concentration on the rate of polymer formation and on the molecular weight of …

Petrography, Diagenesis And Environment Of Deposition Of The Gasconade Formation, Lower Ordovician, Southern Missouri, Abd El-Aziz El-Hady A. Borahay

Doctoral Dissertations

"The Gasconade Formation (Lower Ordovician) has been studied in the surface and subsurface in the Ozarks of Missouri and northeastern Oklahoma. The formation is mostly dolomite with a sandstone member at the base (Gunter) and frequent occurrences of chert bodies of different shapes particularly in the middle part.

The dolomite crystals in the lower and upper parts are subhedral to euhedral of equicrystalline to two-size fabric and range in size from 300-600 microns, and subhedral to anhedral of variable fabric and smaller size in the middle part. A sequence of cloudy and clear areas, named zoning, characterizes the euhedral crystals. …

Approaches To The Synthesis Of Azabullvalene, Thomas Rudolph Steinheimer Jan 1973

Approaches To The Synthesis Of Azabullvalene, Thomas Rudolph Steinheimer

Doctoral Dissertations

"Three approaches to the synthesis of the heretofore unknown azabullvalene, the pi electron equivalent heterocyclic congener of bullvalene itself, are described. Two of the schemes are based upon the assumption that the most convenient method for the introduction of the nitrogen atom is via thermal rearrangement of the appropriate azide.

The first involved the generation of the homobarrelene carbon skeleton and sub sequent decomposition of its azide. This compound arises formally as the product of the Diels-Alder addition of acetylene to the bicyclic valence isomer of tropyl azide (cyclohepta-1, 3, 5- trienyl-7-azide). In order to achieve this goal, Diels-Alder additions …

Petrography, Chemical Composition, And Stratigraphic Setting Of The Coals Of North-Central Missouri, William Keith Wedge

Doctoral Dissertations

"Under a grant from the National Air Pollution Control Administration, the Missouri Geological Survey undertook a core drilling program to learn more about the coals in north-central Missouri. The stratigraphic setting and chemical and petrographic characteristics of 43 complete samples of coal recovered from 13 diamond drill holes in the exploration program in north-central Missouri are major contributions of this study. These samples represent twelve different coal beds of the Atokan and Desmoinesian Series of the Pennsylvanian System of Missouri and range in thickness from 9.6 to 44.4 inches. They have an average thickness of 20.4 inches and a combined …

Investigation Of Present Thermal Regime Of Missouri River In Missouri, James C. Maxwell Dec 1972

Investigation Of Present Thermal Regime Of Missouri River In Missouri, James C. Maxwell

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The applicability of power spectral density techniques, Fourier series analysis, and linear regression to the mathematical modeling of river water temperature is demonstrated. Consideration is also given to the problem of estimating thermal inputs to rivers from man-made sources such as electrical power plants. First, power spectral density techniques are used in the time-series analysis of water temperature records which were taken from the Missouri River. Two spectral ranges are then studied from the standpoint of their applicability to (1) mathematical model building and (2) detection and identification of cyclic thermal inputs. Next, a Fourier regression fit to the time-series …

System For Data Acquisition From High Voltage Terminals, George W. York, John T. Park, James J. Miskinis, David H. Crandall, Victor Pol

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An inexpensive data acquisition system has been designed to provide high voltage isolation for data acquisition in analog, digital, and pulse modes. The telemetry system uses GaAs light sources, fiber optics, and phototransistors to accomplish the data transmission. Prewired logic boards have been adapted to accomplish the timing and logic functions. Seven decades of digital data are transmitted error free, pulse data can be transmitted at rates up to 1 MHz, and analog data are transmitted with 0.05% full scale accuracy. © 1972 The American Institute of Physics.

Channeltron Gain In Magnetic Fields, Yu Bong Hahn, Robert E. Hebner, Daniel R. Kastelein, Kaare J. Nygaard Dec 1972

Channeltron Gain In Magnetic Fields, Yu Bong Hahn, Robert E. Hebner, Daniel R. Kastelein, Kaare J. Nygaard

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The gain and total count rate of electron channel multipliers depend strongly on applied magnetic fields. We report experimental results for Channeltrons operated in magnetic fields of up to 300 G, and find that the applied voltage must be increased to about 4000 V to maintain a sufficiently high gain. Slightly higher count rates are observed if the magnetic field is parallel to the plane of the Channeltron, as compared to perpendicular to that plane. © 1972 The American Institute of Physics.

Distribution Of Mass And Charge In The Spontaneous Fission Of ²⁴⁴Cm, K. F. Flynn, B. Srinivasan, Oliver Manuel, Lawrence Elgin Glendenin Dec 1972

Distribution Of Mass And Charge In The Spontaneous Fission Of ²⁴⁴Cm, K. F. Flynn, B. Srinivasan, Oliver Manuel, Lawrence Elgin Glendenin

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The distribution of mass and charge in the spontaneous fission of 244Cm has been investigated by radiochemical and mass spectrometric determination of the fission yields for 40 mass chains and 2 shielded nuclides (independent yields). The mass distribution is highly asymmetric with a relative probability of asymmetric-to-symmetric fission (peak-to-valley ratio) of greater than 5700. The average masses of the light and heavy groups are 103.1 and 138.7, respectively. The characteristics of the mass distribution, as well as the division of nuclear charge indicated by the independent yields of the two shielded nuclides, are consistent with the systematics established from …

Eikonal Approximation For Coupled Equations For Multichannel Scattering, Rung T. Ling, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher, Kenneth M. Watson Aug 1972

Eikonal Approximation For Coupled Equations For Multichannel Scattering, Rung T. Ling, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher, Kenneth M. Watson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is well known that the Glauber approximation for scattering amplitudes is obtained by applying the eikonal approximation to the Fourier transform of the transition operator. The eikonal approximation can also be applied to the coupled equations of scattering obtained by the expansion of the state function in terms of a suitable set of functions. The scattering amplitude can thus be obtained by solving the set of eikonal coupled equations. The latter approach is analyzed for a special class of channel-coupling potentials. The first-order approximation to the derived eikonal coupled equations is the eikonal Born approximation. Numerical illustrations in this …

Molecular Model For Prenucleation Water Clusters, P. L. M. Plummer, Barbara N. Hale May 1972

Molecular Model For Prenucleation Water Clusters, P. L. M. Plummer, Barbara N. Hale

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A molecular model applicable to prenucleation water clusters is described. As an illustration the model is applied to water clusters having clathrate-like structures composed of five-menibered rings. This work was motivated by the apparent inadequacies of the corrected liquid drop model which (in addition to applying bulk properties to small clusters) predicts nucleation rates which may be as much as 1017 larger than experiment. We present the "energy of formation" at a temperature of 277°K for our molecular model for clusters ranging in size from 5 to 57 molecules. These results agree qualitatively with experiment and, we believe, provide …

Application Of The Weiss Molecular Field Theory To The B‐Site Spinel, W. E. Holland, Harry A. Brown Jan 1972

Application Of The Weiss Molecular Field Theory To The B‐Site Spinel, W. E. Holland, Harry A. Brown

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A molecular field treatment of the B‐site spinel was used to determine the ordering temperatures and the asymptotic Curie temperature in terms of the exchange integrals. The theory was developed from a 16‐sublattice model and took into account interactions between an atom and its nearest to fourth‐nearest neighbors. Experimental values of the ordering temperatures and the asymptotic Curie temperature were then used to determine the exchange integrals for the systems Hg1−xCdx Cr2 S4, CdCr2S4(1−y)Se4y, and Zn1−xCdxCr2Se4. Adsorption Of Rare Gas Atoms On Xenon, Donald E. Hagen Jan 1972

Adsorption Of Rare Gas Atoms On Xenon, Donald E. Hagen

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of adsorption of rare gas atoms on solids is treated for the case of submonolayer films. An energy spectrum calculation method which is suitable for band structure or heat capacity calculations is discussed. It is particularly useful for adsorbate-substrate systems in the region intermediate between "tight binding" and "plane wave" behavior. The method employs a technique introduced by Kohn and Luttinger of using the eigenfunctions corresponding to a particular point in the Brillouin zone as a basis set. The cases of He and Ne adsorbed on Xe are discussed.

Excited-Ion Lifetimes Using Penning-Ionizing Collisions, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer Jan 1972

Excited-Ion Lifetimes Using Penning-Ionizing Collisions, William F. Parks, Laird D. Schearer

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show that in the Penning-ionizing collision He(23S1)+X→He(11S0)+(X+)*+e the precession of the Hem spin at its Larmor frequency forces the J polarization of the Penning ion to rotate at the same frequency but shifted in phase. The tangent of the phase shift is proportional to the lifetime of the ionic state and presents a unique method for measuring excited-ion lifetimes. © 1972 The American Physical Society.

An Aircraft, Aerosol Sampling Program: Some Preliminary Results, J. F. Stampfer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

An aircraft sampling program to determine the vertical and size distributions of that part of the atmospheric aerosol with radius greater than 0.25 μ is described. The feasibility of using a single engine aircraft and a light scattering particle analyzer, for this work, is shown. Examples of the data are given and preliminary conclusions are drawn about the normal size distribution, effect of lapse rate on the vertical aerosol concentration gradient, effect of relative humidity on the size distribution, and the possibility of producing high concentrations of giant particles aloft. © 1972.

The Utilization Of High Sensitivity Noble Gas Mass Spectrometry In The Detection Of Iodine-129 And Plutonium-244, Mervet S. Boulos Jan 1972

The Utilization Of High Sensitivity Noble Gas Mass Spectrometry In The Detection Of Iodine-129 And Plutonium-244, Mervet S. Boulos

Doctoral Dissertations

"Mass spectrometric analysis of the xenon isotopes in natural gas wells demonstrates that radioactive isotopes of element number 53 (I) and element number 94 (Pu) were present at the time of the Earth's formation. Evidence for the now extinct nuclide129I (t1/2 = 17 x 106 years) was found in CO₂ -rich gas while evidence for the now extinct 244Pu (t1/2 = 82 x 106 years) was discovered in other natural gas wells. The amounts of 129I in thyroids was measured by combining neutron activation analysis with noble gas mass spectrometry. The current …

Elementary Length Topologies Constructed Using Pseudo-Norms With Values In Tikhohov Semi-Fields, Jackie Ray Hamm Jan 1972

Elementary Length Topologies Constructed Using Pseudo-Norms With Values In Tikhohov Semi-Fields, Jackie Ray Hamm

Doctoral Dissertations

"Elementary length topologies defined on normed and pseudo-normed linear spaces are studied. It is shown that elementary length topologies constructed with different pseudo-norms are never equivalent. Elementary length topologies are constructed on certain topological spaces and some of their properties are investigated. It is shown that certain "measuring devices" (i.e., norms, pseudo-norms, semi-norms, and pseudo-metrics) which take their values in Tikhonov semifields may be used to construct elementary length topologies on any topological linear space. Relationships between two elementary length topologies generated with different measuring devices are considered.

Let (X,t) be a topological linear space such that t is determined …

A Study Of Phosphorus Adsorption And Desorption Kinetics On Silicon (111) Surfaces, L. E. Davis, L. L. Levenson, J. J. Melles

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) methods were used to characterize the (111) surface of Si wafers before and after the deposition of P2 molecules. Before deposition, the well-known Si(111)-7 LEED pattern was easily obtained by thermal cleaning at 1200 °C. Cleaning was done by electron bombardment in a vacuum chamber with a base pressure of ∼ 10-10 Torr. After cleaning, AES showed that about 10-2 atomic layer of carbon was the only surface contaminant. The sensitivity of our cylindrical AES apparatus for phosphorus was about 10-3 atomic layer. We found that ∼5x10-2 atomic layer of …

Studies Of Neutron Capture Produced Rare Gas Isotopes In Rocks And Minerals Containing Chlorine, Selenium And Tellurium, David E. Sinclair Jan 1972

Studies Of Neutron Capture Produced Rare Gas Isotopes In Rocks And Minerals Containing Chlorine, Selenium And Tellurium, David E. Sinclair

Masters Theses

"Noble gas mass spectrometry was used to study rare nuclear processes in terrestrial rocks and minerals. An excess of 36Ar was detected in a chlorine-rich rock. The excess 36Ar has been produced in rocks near the earth's surface due to capture of cosmic-ray-produced neutrons on 35Cl. Measurement of 36Ar formed by the 35Cl(n, γ)36Cl(β-)36Ar process makes possible a new method for determining the surface residence time of chlorine-rich minerals

Excess 82Kr and excess 83Kr were detected in selenium-rich ores. The excess 82Kr results from double beta …

A Geochemical Reconnaissance Of Puerto Rican Beach Sands, Louis Meinecke Iii

Masters Theses

"Twenty-four beach sand samples from the island of Puerto Rico were collected in 1964 by Dr. Ernst Bolter as part of a radiometric survey conducted by him. These samples were given to the author in 1969 for chemical analysis.

The purpose of this investigation was to conduct a geochemical reconnaissance study of the beach sands in order to determine the geochemical background and possible anomalies. This information could aid in offshore mineral exploration and source area determination.

This thesis presents the results of a quantitative chemical analysis for copper, lead, zinc, iron, manganese, aluminum, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and strontium …

Diffusiophoretic Forces Between Juxtaposed Atmospheric Particles, Allen L. Williams Jan 1972

Diffusiophoretic Forces Between Juxtaposed Atmospheric Particles, Allen L. Williams

Doctoral Dissertations

"The role of diffusiophoretics and Stefan flow in droplet growth by accretion and in-cloud scavenging is examined. A calculation is made for the diffusive forces between two juxtaposed spheres one or both of which are undergoing diffusional growth and the influence of the diffusive force on the trajectories of two spheres, assumed to obey the creeping flow equations is found. The results are: a) the diffusiophoretic force between two water droplets is zero. b) the diffusiophoretic force between a spherical ice particle and a water droplet, although non-zero, is too small to appreciably influence the fall trajectories. c) the diffusiophoretic …

An Acceleration Technique For A Conjugate Direction Algorithm For Nonlinear Regression, Larry Wilmer Cornwell Jan 1972

An Acceleration Technique For A Conjugate Direction Algorithm For Nonlinear Regression, Larry Wilmer Cornwell

Doctoral Dissertations

"A linear acceleration technique, LAT, is developed which is applied to three conjugate direction algorithms: (1) Fletcher-Reeves algorithm, (2) Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm and (3) Grey's Orthonormal Optimization Procedure (GOOP). Eight problems are solved by the three algorithms mentioned above and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The addition of the LAT algorithm improves the rate of convergence for the GOOP algorithm in all problems attempted and for some problems using the Fletcher-Reeves algorithm and the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm. Using the number of operations to perform function and derivative evaluations, the algorithms mentioned above are compared. Although the GOOP algorithm is relatively unknown outside of the …

The Average Dissipation Curve Of An Attenuative Layered Earth Medium, Joong Hee Chun Jan 1972

The Average Dissipation Curve Of An Attenuative Layered Earth Medium, Joong Hee Chun

Doctoral Dissertations

"A feasible method of estimating the attenuative properties of a layered earth medium from a reflection seismogram has been developed. An average attenuation factor of n layers in the least squares sense is designated as ß and its usefulness in real applications is investigated. Techniques of extracting dissipation factors from both noise free and noisy reflection seismic traces are discussed. In order to describe the change of the factors with an increase of depth, an average dissipation curve the form of which is similar to the average velocity of layered medium is also introduced. Both the ß and the average …

Trend Surface Analysis As An Aid In Exploration For Mississippi Valley Type Ore Deposits, John Siegfried Trapp Jan 1972

Trend Surface Analysis As An Aid In Exploration For Mississippi Valley Type Ore Deposits, John Siegfried Trapp

Doctoral Dissertations

"The conditions necessary for emplacement of Mississippi Valley-type mineral deposits can be expressed using mathematical symbols as a function of the pre-depositional topography of the host formation and post-depositional structure. These conditions can be observed and analyzed in the Missouri region from residual maps of trend surface analysis of the Precambrian surface. In areas where the topography prior to deposition of the ore bearing horizon has been strongly altered by the deposition of the basal Paleozoic formation the Lamotte Formation residual maps from trend surface analysis of the top of the Lamotte better illustrate these conditions. The Lamotte Formation in …
