Profile Of The Folded Appalachians Of West Virginia, Byron N. Cooper Apr 1968

Profile Of The Folded Appalachians Of West Virginia, Byron N. Cooper

UMR Journal -- V. H. McNutt Colloquium Series

The Appalachian folded belt of southwestern Virginia exemplifies most of the structural and stratigraphic features that are considered typical of the Appalachians as a whole. The folded belt which is only 36 miles wide along the valley course of New River is generally well-defined on the southeast by the western foothills of the Blue Ridge and on the northwest side by a sharp structural front beyond which the beds are relatively gently folded.

Despite the fact that Paleozoic shelf successions of the Central Interior region are known to have controlled the thickness and facies of sedimentary formations within them and …

Associative Detachment: H+Hˉ→₂*+E, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher Apr 1968

Associative Detachment: H+Hˉ→₂*+E, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The process of associative detachment in the (H,H-) collision system is investigated at energies below 12 eV. In this energy region, the interaction potential between H and H- has recently been determined. The energy dependence of the cross section is calculated with explicit allowance for the production of "hot" hydrogen molecules. It is observed that associative detachment provides a possible mechanism for generating an inverted population of the residual molecule such as H2.

Preface, Paul Dean Proctor

UMR Journal -- V. H. McNutt Colloquium Series

The distinguished authors of these tectonic studies, which span the United States from the Atlantic continental shelf margin to the Pacific coast, need no introduction to the geologic profession. Each was selected as a participant in the V. H. McNutt-Geology Department Colloquium because of his intimate knowledge and thorough research on the tectonic development of the area on which he reports. The authors publicly presented their papers during the Spring of 1966 on the campus of the University of Missouri at Rolla (formerly University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy). The colloquium volume is unique in that such a …

Tectonic History Of Midcontinental United States, Frank G. Snyder Apr 1968

Tectonic History Of Midcontinental United States, Frank G. Snyder

UMR Journal -- V. H. McNutt Colloquium Series

Metasediments of Middle Precambrian, and possibly some of earlier age, form an arcuate trending belt across Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. These were intruded by granites of several ages that appear to be part of a continuous wave of Late Precambrfan igneous activity. Late Precambrian events that can be delineated include, besides the igneous activity and formation of iron deposits, development of a Keweenawan basin that extended from Lake Superior into eastern Kansas; igneous activity and metamorphism of Grenville age in the eastern Midcontinent; development of a major fault lineament extending northeastward from northeast Arkansas into the Canadian shield outcrop area …

The California Coast Ranges, John C. Crowell Apr 1968

The California Coast Ranges, John C. Crowell

UMR Journal -- V. H. McNutt Colloquium Series

Western California between the 37th and 40th parallels is part of an active mobile orogenic belt in which sedimentation, deformation, volcanism, and plutonism have been intimately associated since the mid-Mesozoic. At present, the region is still undergoing folding and warping as shown by data from geodetic triangulation networks and geomorphology, and several major high-angle fault zones are seismically active. These faults continue to acquire displacement both suddenly during earthquakes and slowly by gentle creep with no recordable shocks. Pleistocene beds and terraces at places are steeply warped. Strong deformation occurred during the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene. Most of the …

New Superconvergent Dispersion Relations For The Forward Πn Crossing-Even Amplitude, David J. George, Barbara N. Hale, Arnold Tubis Apr 1968

New Superconvergent Dispersion Relations For The Forward Πn Crossing-Even Amplitude, David J. George, Barbara N. Hale, Arnold Tubis

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Liu-Okubo-type dispersion relation is derived for the crossing-even pion-nucleon forward elastic scattering amplitude T(+). Two subtractions are made, one at the physical scattering threshold and the other at a previously determined zero of T(+) on the imaginary axis of the complex ω (pion lab energy) plane. The dispersion relation is well satisfied over the whole allowed range of the Liu-Okubo parameter. Moreover, it is nearly saturated by low-energy scattering for a considerable range of the parameter. It should thus serve as an extremely sensitive test of the low-energy scattering data when such data become more accurately …

Interaction Potential Between The Ground States Of H And Hˉ, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher Mar 1968

Interaction Potential Between The Ground States Of H And Hˉ, Joseph C.Y. Chen, Jerry Peacher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation of the interaction potential for H and H- in both ungerade and gerade modes is carried out by a semiempirical method in which the recently observed isotope effect in dissociative attachment of electrons to hydrogen molecules is used. The interaction obtained is complex, and the imaginary parts of the interaction account for electron emissions during the course of the interaction. A comparison of the present result with other calculations is presented. The isotope effect in dissociative attachment is also discussed. It is shown that the ratios of the survival probabilities alone do not provide an adequate approximation …

An Experimental Determination Of The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water Vapor In Argon And Helium, Louis Benton Allen Jan 1968

An Experimental Determination Of The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water Vapor In Argon And Helium, Louis Benton Allen

Doctoral Dissertations

"An expansion type cloud chamber was used to measure the nucleation rate of water vapor in an atmosphere of helium and argon. A careful study was made of the thermodynamic characteristics during the expansion so that the nucleation data could be interpreted with reasonable accuracy and consistency. A fine wire thermocouple was used to measure the gas temperature during the course of an isentropic expansion in the dry chamber. When the finite heat capacity of the thermocouple is accounted for, it is found that there is almost perfect agreement with the temperature calculated from the equation of state and the …

A Kinetic Investigation Of The Reaction Of Ethylenedinitrilotetraacetic Acid (Edta) And Cerium (Iv) In Acid Solution, Sahmia K. Al-Hashimi Jan 1968

A Kinetic Investigation Of The Reaction Of Ethylenedinitrilotetraacetic Acid (Edta) And Cerium (Iv) In Acid Solution, Sahmia K. Al-Hashimi

Masters Theses

"The reaction between Ce(IV) salt solutions and EDTA solution was followed titrimetrically and spectrophotometrically and found to occur in stages. Four equivalents of Ce(IV) are reduced per mole of EDTA almost instantaneously at room temperature or even lower. With increasing temperature and reaction time an ultimate of about 14 equivalents of Ce(IV) is consumer per mole of EDTA. Formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and other unidentified compounds are the products of oxidation of EDTA with Ce(IV). The kinetics of the reaction in aqueous sulfuric acid (0.09 - 2.95 M̲) was studied over the temperature range 11.7-40⁰ by a spectrophotometric technique. In the …

A Development Of Regression Models For Predicting Temperature, Salinity And Sound Velocity In Sea Water, Darwin Wayne Brown Jan 1968

A Development Of Regression Models For Predicting Temperature, Salinity And Sound Velocity In Sea Water, Darwin Wayne Brown

Masters Theses

"There are in existence today some reasonably good numerical procedures for predicting sound velocity, but these procedures require that certain initial data such as temperature and salinity be given before a sound velocity may be computed. Eliminating the need for on-location observations of temperature and salinity, which are used in computing sound velocity, was the primary objective of this study. Stepwise multiple regression was applied in the search for suitable models to predict temperature and salinity, and ultimately sound entirely in terms of controllable variables, such as latitude, longitude, depth, and day-of-year"--Abstract, page ii.

A Comparison Of Three Numerical Techniques Used For The Solution Of The Two-Point Boundary Value Problem, William Richard Krall Jan 1968

A Comparison Of Three Numerical Techniques Used For The Solution Of The Two-Point Boundary Value Problem, William Richard Krall

Masters Theses

"Three numerical approximation techniques, called the Initial step, Shooting, and Direct Finite Difference Techniques, respectively, are compared and discussed as they apply to the solution of both linear and non-linear boundary-value problems of the form y"=f(x,y,y') with endpoint conditions y(xo)=yo and y(xn)=yn. The techniques are compared with respect to speed and accuracy by comparing the solution of each problem considered four times, each time for a different increment value, and comparing the errors at four pivotal points chosen at equally spaced distances over the domain of the function, to give an indication of …

Cell Model Of A Fluid. Ii. Thermodynamic Properties Of The System, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund Jan 1968

Cell Model Of A Fluid. Ii. Thermodynamic Properties Of The System, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In Paper I of this series (preceding paper) the model was formulated mathematically, and the solution derived in the form of an infinite series. The convergence and analyticity of the solution were investigated. It was then applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems with nearest-neighbor interactions, and low-temperature series for these systems were obtained. In the present article the thermodynamics of the model are investigated. The series solution of the partition function derived in Paper I is applied to systems with interaction potentials of increasing complexity. The validity of the model is established by showing that in the appropriate limits …

Cell Model Of A Fluid. I. Evaluation Of The Partition Function And Series Expansions, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund Jan 1968

Cell Model Of A Fluid. I. Evaluation Of The Partition Function And Series Expansions, Ralph G. Tross, Louis H. Lund

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The partition function of a one-dimensional system of particles with all interactions active is formulated in terms of Ising ferromagnetic spin states. It is shown how the partition function for two- and three-dimensional systems can be obtained from the one-dimensional one by restricting the number of bonds per particle. After writing the partition function in matrix form, the operator of interest is diagonalized and its trace expressed in the form of a convenient infinite series. The series is shown to be absolutely convergent and its analytic properties are briefly investigated. It is then applied to one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems …

Dielectric Properties Of Solid Solutions Of Bifeo₃ With Pb(Ti, Zr)O₃ At High Temperature And High Frequency, Robert Travis Smith, Gary D. Achenbach, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James Jan 1968

Dielectric Properties Of Solid Solutions Of Bifeo₃ With Pb(Ti, Zr)O₃ At High Temperature And High Frequency, Robert Travis Smith, Gary D. Achenbach, Robert Gerson, William Joseph James

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Solid solutions of BiFeO3 with PbTiO3, PbTi0.5Zr0.5O3, and PbZrO3 were prepared. The crystallographic data on these solutions, which are basically perovskitic, are given. The dielectric constants of the materials were determined at a frequency of 0.53 GHz and at temperatures up to 800°C. Dielectric Curie points were found in solutions containing up to 90 mole % BiFeO3. These results leave little doubt that BiFeO3 is ferroelectric or antiferroelectric. The extrapolated Curie point for BiFeO3 is above 850°C. BiFeO3 appears more likely to be ferroelectric than …

Analysis Of A Focus Log Electrode In A Non Homogeneous Medium, John Julian Zenor Jan 1968

Analysis Of A Focus Log Electrode In A Non Homogeneous Medium, John Julian Zenor

Doctoral Dissertations

"The mathematical model presented for the focused logging system is applicable to any resistance logging tool of the electrode type. Horizontal or cylindrical resistance interfaces may be included in any combinations. The tool and its environment are compartmentalized, and the integral form of the condition for continuity of current is applied to each compartment. Acceleration methods are applied to the iterative solution of the resulting large-scale system of linear equations. Two specific models are presented, one for the study of the effects of invasion and the other for the study of the effects of bed thickness on the apparent resistivity …

A Study Of Bifeo₃ And The Hall Effect In Bifeo₃ And Cds, Fred Hoerger Taylor Jan 1968

A Study Of Bifeo₃ And The Hall Effect In Bifeo₃ And Cds, Fred Hoerger Taylor

Masters Theses

"Pure samples of BiFeO₃ were heat treated in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres in an attempt to reduce the conductivity of the samples. Dielectric constant and dissipation factor measurements, as a function of frequency, were made to determine whether the samples had been altered. A special high temperature Hall effect apparatus was constructed. Using this apparatus an upper limit for the Hall mobility in BiFeO₃ was established. The apparatus was also used for room temperature measurements of Ga-doped CdS samples. Resistivity measurements to be used with the Hall effect results were made on both the BiFeO₃ and the CdS samples. Hot-Point …

The Lifetime And Effective Quenching Cross Section Of The 6²P₃/₂ State Of Thallium, Robert Charles Pickett Jan 1968

The Lifetime And Effective Quenching Cross Section Of The 6²P₃/₂ State Of Thallium, Robert Charles Pickett

Doctoral Dissertations

"The measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 6²P₃/₂ state of thallium is discussed. Measurement of time varying optical absorption by time sampling techniques is explained for the study of the decay of the metastable atom concentration following a pulsed radio frequency discharge. The decay of the thallium radiation from optically allowed states terminating on the metastable state is measured at nine different thallium densities in the afterglow of the discharge. This radiation repopulates the metastable state and is displayed on an oscilloscope. The metastable lifetime is measured as a function of the thallium density at three different r-f power …

Cell Model Of A Fluid With Hard-Core Repulsive Long-Range Attractive Potential, Ralph G. Tross Jan 1968

Cell Model Of A Fluid With Hard-Core Repulsive Long-Range Attractive Potential, Ralph G. Tross

Doctoral Dissertations

"A model of a one-dimensional fluid is investigated in which the praticles [sic] are embedded in a cellular space grid and interact with a modified Lennart-Jones potential. It is shown that with an appropriate change in the potential function the model is also suitable for a two- or three-dimensional fluid with more restricted interactions. The man-fermion-like nature of the system resulting from the hard-rod repulsive part of the modified Lennard-Jones potential makes possible an isomorphism between occupation numbers (number operators) and spin states (spin operators) of an Ising ferromagnet, permitting a convenient mathematical formulation of the problem in terms of …

Surface Interactions Between Nickel Ions And Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Ralph Edward Coleman Jan 1968

Surface Interactions Between Nickel Ions And Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, Ralph Edward Coleman

Masters Theses

"In this research the interaction of nickel ions with the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate at the liquid-air interface was studied. Surface tension measurements were performed on pure sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions, with and without the addition of nickel ions. Results of these measurements showed that the addition of nickel ions lowered the equilibrium surface tension values of pure sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions and shifted the critical micelle concentration to lower concentrations. The foam fractionation technique was used to determine if the nickel ions could be removed from surfactant solutions. It was found that the removal of nickel ions was influenced …

The Effect Of Impurities On The Time Dependence Of The Surface Tension Of Aqueous Surfactant Systems, Elizabeth Ann Munson Jan 1968

The Effect Of Impurities On The Time Dependence Of The Surface Tension Of Aqueous Surfactant Systems, Elizabeth Ann Munson

Masters Theses

"In this study surface tension measurements were made on tetradecylpyridinium bromide (TPB) solutions both in water in solutions containing various concentrations of impurities. Three impurities were studied, dodecyl alcohol, decyl alcohol and dodecylpyridinium bromide. Surface tension vs. time plots were constructed and show a definite dependence on the concentration of the impurity added. As the concentration of the impurity increases the equilibrium surface tension decreases. The decrease in the equilibrium surface tension is also dependent upon the concentration of the tetradecylpyridinium bromide. As the concentration of the surfactant (TPB) increases the effect of the impurity is reduced"--Abstract, page i.

The Downhole Suspension And Testing Of An Electrodynamic Shear Wave Exciter, Robert Franklin Kehrman Jan 1968

The Downhole Suspension And Testing Of An Electrodynamic Shear Wave Exciter, Robert Franklin Kehrman

Masters Theses

"The work in this research project was aimed at designing a Downhole Electromagnetic Shear Wave Generator capable of delivering a wide frequency band, random, continuous signal. This Exciter was built using a compressed-air driven piston assembly for downhole application. The device was tested in the laboratory in a concrete test facility. It proved to be capable of transmitting a continuous, measurable stress into the concrete in a 100 to 5,000 hertz frequency band"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of Bismuth Ferrate And Bismuth Manganate In Solid Solution With Lead Titanate, Harris C. Jones Jan 1968

A Study Of Bismuth Ferrate And Bismuth Manganate In Solid Solution With Lead Titanate, Harris C. Jones

Masters Theses

"A new sample holder for measuring the high frequency dielectric constant of ferroelectrics at high temperature was constructed. The new sample holder eliminated discontinuities in the slotted line and improved the electrical contact between the ceramic and brass components. Measurements of the high frequency dielectric constant of an aged sample of 90% BiFeO₃ - 10% PbTiO₃ were made as a function of temperature using the slotted line technique. The dissipation function for the aged sample was found to have a more normal behavior near the Curie point than the virgin samples previously measured. Resistivity measurements were made as a function …

Absolute Specification Of X-Ray Spectra By Laplace Transform Analysis Of Attenuation Data, Gerald Robert Lusk Jan 1968

Absolute Specification Of X-Ray Spectra By Laplace Transform Analysis Of Attenuation Data, Gerald Robert Lusk

Masters Theses

"A well characterized, variable plate separation ion chamber was utilized as a detector to collect x-ray attenuation data for generating information on the Laplace transform predicted spectrum of a 50 KvCP conventional x-ray tube. The variable plate separation feature allows one to include a wavelength dependent correction to the detector response which is associated with the hardening of the x-ray spectrum as it traverses the attenuating material. With this correction, the conventional two-term Laplace transform was shown to approximate independently the bremsstrahlung and characteristic L radiation from the tungsten target. The detector provides an absolute statement of the target-referenced x-ray …

Lateral Variations Of Carbonate Rock Adjacent To Ore Deposits In The Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-Lead District, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Mehdi H. Mirbaba

Masters Theses

"The lateral variation and nature of carbonate host rock in the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district were petrographically studied within the McGregor and Quimbys Mill Members of the Platteville Formation of the Middle Ordovician System. These members are dolomitic limestone in the Upper Mississippi Valley district of southwestern Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois and northeastern Iowa. One hundred and twenty-seven specimens were collected or were available from pull drifts in the Shullsburg mine. The specimens were collected at regular intervals of 50 or lOO feet in seven pull drifts between eight ore bodies. Thin sections prepared from the carbonate specimens were studied, …

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson Jan 1968

Hrva - A Velocity Analysis Technique For Seismic Data, John Charles Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations

"A High-Resolution Velocity Analysis (HRVA) has been developed for the determination of the root-mean-square subsurface-velocity energy spectrum from gated seismic data which has been normal-moveout corrected. All calculations are performed in the frequency-space or frequency-wavenumber domain; seismic gates are transformed from the time-space domain via the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. HRVA is not restricted to the investigation of apparent horizontal velocities which have associated stepout values that are integral multiples of the time sampling interval, as are the existing correlation techniques. The technique liberally exploits the inexistence of significant energy in the higher frequency harmonies of seismic data, resulting in …

Deuterium Isotope Effects On The Solvolysis Rates Of Cyclopentyl Brosylates And Tosylates, Jimmie D. Christen Jan 1968

Deuterium Isotope Effects On The Solvolysis Rates Of Cyclopentyl Brosylates And Tosylates, Jimmie D. Christen

Doctoral Dissertations

"The brosylates and tosylates of cyclopentanol and its 1-d₁, c̲i̲s̲-2-d₁, t̲r̲a̲n̲s̲-2-d₁, and 2,2,5,5-d₄ analogs have been synthesized and their solvolysis rates measured at 25° in 70% vol. ethanol-water. The solvoylsis reactions were monitored by a conductance method. The isotope effects, kH/kD, observed for the brosylates and tosylates of each of the isotopically substituted cyclopentyl alcohols are as follows: 1-d₁-brosylate (1.1869) and 1-3₁-tosylate (1l1836); c̲i̲s̲-2-d₁-brosylate (1.1533) and c̲i̲s̲-2-3₁-tosylate (1.1577); t̲r̲a̲n̲s̲-2-d₁-brosylate (1.1803) and t̲r̲a̲n̲s̲-2-d₁-tosylate (1.1765); 2,2,5,5-d₄-brosylate (1.8881) and 2,2,5,5-d₄-tosylate (1.8863). The closeness in magnitude of the isotope effects for the c̲i̲s̲- and t̲r̲a̲n̲s̲-isomers is important in that it …
