A Study Of Certain Conservative Sets For Parameters In The Linear Statistical Model, Roger Alan Chapin Jan 1965

A Study Of Certain Conservative Sets For Parameters In The Linear Statistical Model, Roger Alan Chapin

Masters Theses

"In the case of the linear statistical model, it has been shown that under certain conditions the confidence intervals obtained by considering the parameters one at a time are conservative when used as a joint confidence region, using the product of confidences as the confidence. However, nothing had been known of how conservative they are. This research provides accurate estimates of the true confidence for these cases.

Also, it has not yet been proved that they are indeed conservative for all cases. It is thought that they are, and the results of this research support this conjecture"--Abstract, page ii.

Geology Of Pride Mine And New Standard Mine Area, Northwestern Yuma County, Arizona, Henry E. Fernandez Jan 1965

Geology Of Pride Mine And New Standard Mine Area, Northwestern Yuma County, Arizona, Henry E. Fernandez

Masters Theses

"A thick section of presumably Precambrian gneiss with thin intercalated bands of marble and schist has been mapped. There is structural continuity within these rock types as they are mutually intercalated, conformable, have gradational relations and show equal participation in the same individual fold. The layers of schist and marble in the gneiss can be followed over long distances. These rocks have undergone intense regional metamorphism, primarily dynamic, with a possible regional compressive force generated from NW-SE giving rise to sets of folds and faults in the area. From structural, petrographic and field evidence, it is concluded that the metamorphic …

A Graphical Method Of Estimating Heat Capacities Of Hydrocarbons, Pu-Ying Liu Jan 1965

A Graphical Method Of Estimating Heat Capacities Of Hydrocarbons, Pu-Ying Liu

Masters Theses

"Heat capacity arises because the individual particles comprising a substance are able to move and thus take up kinetic energy and usually also potential energy as the temperature rises. In many substances electrons do not absorb energy until very high temperatures are reached. Thus most heat capacity effects are interpreted in terms of the motion of the atoms neglecting electronic transitions. The total internal energy of a material is, therefore, equal to the sum of the energies due to translational and rotational motion of the molecules and to the vibrational motion of the atoms making up the molecules...The objective of …

Studies On The Conversion Of Indole Acetic Acid And Oxindole Acetic Acid By Hygrophorous Conicus, Barbara Ruth Patterson Jan 1965

Studies On The Conversion Of Indole Acetic Acid And Oxindole Acetic Acid By Hygrophorous Conicus, Barbara Ruth Patterson

Masters Theses

"The fungus, Hygrophorous conicus, produces the enzyme, indole acetic acid oxidase, when grown in the presence of indole acetic acid (IAA) or tryptamine. The IAA acts both as an inducer and a substrate for this intracellular enzyme. The product of the oxidation catalyzed by the IAA oxidase is oxindole acetic acid (OIAA). Since the IAA and OIAA absorb maximally at two different wavelengths the use of spectrophotometric analysis was possible for assaying for the IAA oxidase activity. Paper chromatography was used for qualitative identification of the IAA and OIAA. The rate of growth and the rate of formation of the …

Stereochemistry Of Chlorinated Diels-Alder Adducts, Harry R. Musser Jan 1965

Stereochemistry Of Chlorinated Diels-Alder Adducts, Harry R. Musser

Masters Theses

"Hexachlorocyclopentadiene and related compounds have been studied extensively in connection with Diels-Alder reactions. Many of the adducts formed are used as intermediates in insecticide syntheses. It is of interest to study the stereochemistry of the adducts of one of the hexachlorocyclopentadiene derivaites. 5,5-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorocyclopentadiene and various dienophiles, when allowed to react, yield compounds of the bridges bicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2-ene series. The study of the endo and/or exo configuration of various functional groups such as carboxyl, aldehyde, and hydroxymethyl can be related to the known exo-5-hydroxymethyl1-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobicyclo-[2.2.1] help-2-ene-7-one"--Introduction, page [1].

Coprecipitation Of Metal Salts With Organic Coprecipitants, Omar E. El-Arini Jan 1965

Coprecipitation Of Metal Salts With Organic Coprecipitants, Omar E. El-Arini

Masters Theses

"Coprecipitation studies were carried out for the more insoluble salts of six common metals and five anion systems. Three metal sulfides, namely, CuS, CdS and NiS, were the only metal salts studied that indicated nearly complete coprecipitation with phenolphthalein as carrier precipitate. The same salts showed almost no coprecipitation with B-naphthol as carrier precipitate. Solvent extraction of CuS with chloroform showed no significant amount of extraction had taken place. The data obtained in this work did not disclose any relationship between the extent of coprecipitation and the solubility product constant of the salt present. The main difficulty encountered at this …

Near Optimal Sequencing :N Jobs And M Machines; All Jobs To Be Processed Through The Same Order Of Machines, Larry Glen Clark

Masters Theses

"There is a need, in industry, for an efficient method of determining an optimal sequence for processing a number of jobs through two or more machines. A method which requires a minimum amount of time would be most beneficial. The purpose of this study has been to define such a method. Tests on the method described indicate that although an optimal solution is not always obtained, the solutions obtained are quite good and due to the time factor the method would be beneficial to industry"--Abstract, page ii.

Comparison Of Methods To Select A Probability Model, Howard Lyndal Colburn Jan 1965

Comparison Of Methods To Select A Probability Model, Howard Lyndal Colburn

Masters Theses

"A comparison is made between the estimates of the parameters in a gamma distribution obtained by the method of moments with those obtained by a numerical approximation to the maximum likelihood estimates. The estimates obtained by the numerical approximation had a smaller mean squared error from the true value than the estimates obtained by the method of moments. Modifications to tests of fit are made in order to develop methods to select a distribution from a set of possible distributions for a population with an unknown distribution. These selection methods are compared in their ability to make correct selections. Although …

Taxonomic Study Of Fossil And Recent Otoliths Of Certain Cuskeels, Gary Neal Pointer Jan 1965

Taxonomic Study Of Fossil And Recent Otoliths Of Certain Cuskeels, Gary Neal Pointer

Masters Theses

"Otoliths are calcareous structures occurring in the auditory labyrinths of teleost (bony) fishes. Three pairs of these earstones normally are found: the sagitta, in the sacculus; the asteriscus, in the lagena; and the lapillus in the utriculus. In fishes other than the Order cypriniformes (carp, catfishes, and related forms), the sagitta is the largest otolith, and it may be used in taxonomic and other studies. Fossil earstones of cuskeels (Family Ophidiiae-Brotulidae), constituting the Preophidion complex, occur in relative abundance at various levels in the Claiborne, Jackson, and Vicksburg groups of the Lower Tertiary on the Gulf Coast. The present study …

A Measurement Of Dead Space And Its Effect On The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water Vapor In Helium, Michael A. Grayson Jan 1965

A Measurement Of Dead Space And Its Effect On The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water Vapor In Helium, Michael A. Grayson

Masters Theses

"The existence of a "dead space" surrounding each nucleated water droplet is demonstrated and measurements of its rate of development are made. The effects of this "dead space" are considered to be due to both the removal of vapor from the helium-water vapor mixture and the evolution of heat about the drop due to its growth. The results confirm the usefulness of the concept of a "dead space" and provide a means for its measurement with respect to time. Recommendations for further study and a method of correcting for dead space effects is given"--page [i].

Pair Distribution For A Cell-Model Liquid, James M. Phillips Jan 1965

Pair Distribution For A Cell-Model Liquid, James M. Phillips

Doctoral Dissertations

"The pair distribution function for a cell-model liquid has been derived by Lund in the form of an integral equation which depends upon the cell-center distribution function and the cell model. From this integral equation an approximate integral equation is obtained by substituting a function, which is linearly dependent upon the molecular pair distribution function and a variable parameter for the cell-center distribution function. This approximate integral equation is solved for the molecular pair distribution and the variable parameter is shown to depend upon the difference between temperature and the critical temperature. Although the exact numerical solution of the molecular …

An Instrument For The Measurement Of Anelastic Properties Of Glass, Thomas Frederick Miller

Masters Theses

"An inverted torsion pendulum for measuring the internal friction and dynamic shear modulus of glass fibers over an extended temperature range has been constructed and calibrated. The calibration consists of the determination of the moment of inertia. Extraneous damping losses were investigated and primary sources were found to be (1) the suspension thread, (2) the method of securing the fiber and (3) air damping. Anelastic measurements were made on an annealed vitreous silica fiber and a soda-lime-silica fiber"--Abstract, page ii.

Geology, Geochemistry And Genesis Of Selected Skarn Deposits, Northern New Brunswick, Canada, Donald John Bachinski Jan 1965

Geology, Geochemistry And Genesis Of Selected Skarn Deposits, Northern New Brunswick, Canada, Donald John Bachinski

Masters Theses

"An exhaustive geological and geochemical study is presented of magnetite-chalcopyrite skarn deposits occurring within the thermal aureole of the Nicholas Denys quartz maonzonie-granodiorite stock. The deposits are crudely lenticular and occur in metamorphosed impure limestone and siliceous, in part limy, argillite-greywacke. These are now represented by andradite-epidote-diopside-calcite skarn and cal-silicate to horn-felsic rocks respectively. Both deposits are spatially related to the Main fault of the Rocky Brook-Millstream fault system; late, generally northwest trending transverse faults are conspicuous and are deemed of importance in ore localization"--Abstract, page [ii].

A Second Study Of Homogeneous Nucleation Of Water Vapor In Helium, Raymond J. Schmitt Jan 1965

A Second Study Of Homogeneous Nucleation Of Water Vapor In Helium, Raymond J. Schmitt

Masters Theses

"Absolute homogeneous nucleation rates in a supersaturated mixture of water vapor and helium are measured using a long sensitive time expansion chamber and a method devised by Kassner and Allard. A pulse technique is employed to produce the nucleation in an effort to suppress disturbing influences of vapor depletion and droplet growth. The time-varying nature of the supersaturation during the nucleation pulse is taken into account by an Integration over the pulse. Observed and theoretically predicted droplet concentrations are related by an assumed nucleation rate law which is adjusted until the total droplet populations predicted by integration of the assumed …

A Parameter Perturbation Technique Applied To Multipoint Iteration Functions For The Solution Of Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Robert N. Delozier Jan 1965

A Parameter Perturbation Technique Applied To Multipoint Iteration Functions For The Solution Of Systems Of Nonlinear Equations, Robert N. Delozier

Masters Theses

"The convergence of classical iterative procedures, when applied to a system of nonlinear algebraic or transcendental equations, is highly dependent upon a good initial approximation to the desired roots. Most of the classical iterative schemes have convergence factors between one and two. In this paper iterative schemes of order two and greater are studied in connection with a parameter perturbation process. The parameter perturbation process relaxes the restrictions on the choice of initial values. The procedure divides each problem into a number of subsidiary problems. Each subsidiary system of equations is then solved until a solution is found to the …

An Investigation Of Current Induced Mass Migration In Solid Metals, Steven Mitchell Kovel Jan 1965

An Investigation Of Current Induced Mass Migration In Solid Metals, Steven Mitchell Kovel

Doctoral Dissertations

"In this investigation of current induced mass transport, the general phenomenological equations will be considered first so as to present a picture of the experimental situation. The theoretical computations are then divided into four sections: (1) the determination of the force on a defect due to electron scattering, (2) a discussion of how the force on the defect might be shared by the surrounding ions, (3) how an external force affects the diffusion frequency of an ion, and (4) what the rate of mass transport is under the influence of an electric field. So as to simplify the discussion and …
