Scanning-Tunneling-Microscopy Study Of Pb On Si(111), D. Tang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, J. Wendelken, J. Xu
Scanning-Tunneling-Microscopy Study Of Pb On Si(111), D. Tang, H. E. Elsayed-Ali, J. Wendelken, J. Xu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Scanning-tunneling microscopy has been used to study temperature and coverage dependence of the structure of lead on the Si(111)-7×7 surface. For low Pb coverage, the Pb atoms favored the faulted sites. The ratio between the number of Pb atoms on faulted to unfaulted sites increased after sample annealing. An energy difference of 0.05 eV associated with a Pb atom on these two sites is estimated. The mobility of Pb atoms on Si(111) was observed at a temperature as low as 260°C for a coverage of 0.1 and 1 ML. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

The electric field dependence of the absorption coefficient in semi‐insulating GaAs at the absorption edge was measured in a high‐voltage pulsed experiment. Pulse duration was kept below 50 ns in order to avoid thermal effects. A GaAs laser diode was used as a probe light source with wavelength varied from 902 to 911 nm. For fields up to 40 kV/cm the absorption coefficient increased from 3 to 17 cm−1 at 902 nm, with smaller absolute increases evident at the longer wavelengths. Calculation from theory was consistent with this behavior. The spatial variation of the electric field was also recorded …
Effects Of Large Aspect Ratios And Fluctuations On Hard X-Ray-Detection In Lower Hybrid Driven Divertor Tokamaks, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala, Paul Bonoli
Effects Of Large Aspect Ratios And Fluctuations On Hard X-Ray-Detection In Lower Hybrid Driven Divertor Tokamaks, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala, Paul Bonoli
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
It is shown that lower hybrid wave scattering from fluctuations plays a critical role in large aspect ratio divertor plasmas even through the edge density fluctuation levels are only at 1%. This is seen in the theoretically calculated electron power-density profiles which can be directly correlated to the standard experimental chordal hard x-ray profiles. It thus seems that fluctuation effects must be included in determining rf current-density profiles.

A Linear-Time Recognition Algorithm For P4-Reducible Graphs, B. Jamison, S. Olariu
A Linear-Time Recognition Algorithm For P4-Reducible Graphs, B. Jamison, S. Olariu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The P4-reducible graphs are a natural generalization of the well-known class of cographs, with applications to scheduling, computational semantics, and clustering. More precisely, the P4-reducible graphs are exactly the graphs none of whose vertices belong to more than one chordless path with three edges. A remarkable property of P4-reducible graphs is their unique tree representation up to isomorphism. In this paper we present a linear-time algorithm to recognize P4-reducible graphs and to construct their corresponding tree representation.
Elimination Of Dissolved Sulfide Interference In The Flow-Injection Determination Of Sigma-Co2 By Addition Of Molybdate, Rigel L. Lustwerk, David J. Burdige
Elimination Of Dissolved Sulfide Interference In The Flow-Injection Determination Of Sigma-Co2 By Addition Of Molybdate, Rigel L. Lustwerk, David J. Burdige
OES Faculty Publications
A previously described flow injection method for the analysis of ΣCO2 included the addition of ZnCl2 to some samples before analysis in order to precipitate dissolved sulfide (which interferes with the method) as ZnS. However, the use of Zn2+ in samples with high concentrations of dissolved sulfide causes the coprecipitation of ZnCO3, and in our experience with this technique, ZnCO3 also precipitates even in the absence of dissolved sulfide. The addition of molybdate effectively complexes dissolved sulfide without interfering with the determination of ΣCO2 by this technique.
A Logistic Model Of Periodic Chemotherapy, J. C. Panetta
A Logistic Model Of Periodic Chemotherapy, J. C. Panetta
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
A logistic differential equation with a time-varying periodic parameter is used to model the growth of cells, in particular cancer cells, in the presences of chemotherapeutic drugs. The chemotherapeutic effects are modeled by a periodic parameter that modifies the growth rate of the cell tissue. A negative growth rate represents the detrimental effects of the drugs. A simple criterion is obtained for the behavior of the chemotherapy.

Influence Of Zooplankton Grazing On Free Dissolved Enzymes In The Sea, Alexander B. Bochdansky, Staša Puškarić, Gerhard J. Herndl
OES Faculty Publications
In the Northern Adriatic Sea, extracellular enzymatic activity was measured during a Lagrangian study following a drifting buoy for 40 h. Dissolved free enzymatic activity represented 20 to 70% of total activity depending on the type of enzyme. alpha- and beta-glucosidases exhibited a significantly higher free activity than proteolytic enzymes. In subsequent laboratory experiments we investigated the effect of zooplankton on the free enzyme pool. The 4-step approach included: (1) determination of the enzymatic activities in copepods (mainly Acartia clausi); (2) enzymatic activity in fecal pellets; (3) short- and long-term grazing experiments; and (4) degradability of free glucosidase in seawater. …
Time To Metamorphosis Of Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus Megalopae: Effects Of Benthic Macroalgae, Robert D. Brumbaugh, John R. Mcconaugha
Time To Metamorphosis Of Blue Crab Callinectes Sapidus Megalopae: Effects Of Benthic Macroalgae, Robert D. Brumbaugh, John R. Mcconaugha
OES Faculty Publications
There is growing evidence that postlarvae (megalopae) of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus can slow the progression through the molt cycle while in offshore nursery grounds, and delay metamorphosis until reinvasion of coastal habitat occurs. However, the cues that trigger metamorphosis of megalopae are not well known. This study tested the hypothesis that the time to metamorphosis (TTM) from the postlarval megalops stage to the first crab stage is shortened in the presence of 2 potential macroalgal settlement substrates, Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyta), and Gracilaria spp. (Rhodophyta). Megalopae and test water were collected from 3 locations (offshore, at a coastal inlet, …
Linear Time Optimization Algorithms For P4-Sparse Graphs, Beverly Jamison, Stephan Olariu
Linear Time Optimization Algorithms For P4-Sparse Graphs, Beverly Jamison, Stephan Olariu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Quite often, real-life applications suggest the study of graphs that feature some local density properties. In particular, graphs that are unlikely to have more than a few chordless paths of length three appear in a number of contexts. A graph G is P4-sparse if no set of five vertices in G induces more than one chordless path of length three. P4-sparse graphs generalize both the class of cographs and the class of P4-reducible graphs. It has been shown that P4-sparse graphs can be recognized in time linear in the size of the …
An Optimal Path Cover Algorithm For Cographs, R. Lin, S. Olariu
An Optimal Path Cover Algorithm For Cographs, R. Lin, S. Olariu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The class of cographs, or complement-reducible graphs, arises naturally in many different areas of applied mathematics and computer science. In this paper, we present an optimal algorithm for determining a minimum path cover for a cograph G. In case G has a Hamiltonian path (cycle) our algorithm exhibits the path (cycle) as well.
A Mathematical Model Of Cycle Chemotherapy, J. C. Panetta, J. Adam
A Mathematical Model Of Cycle Chemotherapy, J. C. Panetta, J. Adam
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
A mathematical model is used to discuss the effects of cycle-specific chemotherapy. The model includes a constraint equation which describes the effects of the drugs on sensitive normal tissue such as bone marrow. This model investigates both pulsed and piecewise-continuous chemotherapeutic effects and calculates the parameter regions of acceptable dose and period. It also identifies the optimal period needed for maximal tumor reduction. Examples are included concerning the use of growth factors and how they can enhance the cell kill of the chemotherapeutic drugs.

A Diamond Thin Film Flow Sensor, Sacharia Albin, John C. Hagwood, John B. Cooper, David L. Gray, Scott D. Martinson, Michael A. Scott
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
We present the results of theoretical modeling and experimental testing of a diamond thin film sensor for flow studies. It is shown that the high thermal conductivity of a diamond film can enhance the frequency response of the flow sensor. One-dimensional heat diffusion equation was solved using the finite difference method for determining the frequency response. Two different sensor structures were analyzed: a Ni film on a quartz substrate (Ni/Q) and an intermediate layer of diamond film between the Ni film and quartz substrate (Ni/D/Q). The theoretical model predicts a frequency response for the Ni/D/Q sensor higher than that of …
Compensation And Characterization Of Gallium Arsenide, Randy A. Roush
Compensation And Characterization Of Gallium Arsenide, Randy A. Roush
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The properties of transition metals in gallium arsenide have been previously investigated extensively with respect to activation energies, but little effort has been made to correlate processing parameters with electronic characteristics. Diffusion of copper in gallium arsenide is of technological importance due to the development of GaAs:Cu bistable photoconductive devices. Several techniques are demonstrated in this work to develop and characterize compensated gallium arsenide wafers. The material is created by the thermal diffusion of copper into silicon-doped GaAs. Transition metals generally form deep and shallow acceptors in GaAs, and therefore compensation is possible by material processing such that the shallow …
Seasonal Variability Of Heat And Mass Transport Process In The Upper Tropical Atlantic Ocean: A Numerical Model Study, Sang-Ki Lee
Seasonal Variability Of Heat And Mass Transport Process In The Upper Tropical Atlantic Ocean: A Numerical Model Study, Sang-Ki Lee
OES Theses and Dissertations
A simple 2.5 layer numerical model was developed and used to illustrate the seasonal variability of heat and mass transports in the upper tropical Atlantic Ocean, associated with the seasonal movement of the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The model ocean was forced by seasonally varying climatological wind and heat flux fields. The entrainment at the base of the mixed layer was scaled by wind stress and shear at the bottom of the mixed layer. On an annual average, the northward transport of the tropical warm water is about 11 Sv, with roughly 10 Sv associated with entrainment of upper thermocline …
Geology Of An Archean Greenstone Belt At Point Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, Patrick Rowan Considine
Geology Of An Archean Greenstone Belt At Point Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, Patrick Rowan Considine
OES Theses and Dissertations
Several well-preserved circa 2.6 Ga Archean granite-greenstone belts are exposed in the Slave Province of Northwest Territories, Canada. At Point Lake, a "supracrustal sequence" comprised mainly of mafic volcanic and metasedimentary rocks lies over and east of a granitoid gneissic terrane. Field and laboratory studies have helped to clarify the petrography and structural relationships of this fold-and-thrust belt. Traditional models have suggested that granite-greenstone belts in the Slave Province are relict continental rifts in which volcanic and sedimentary rocks filled troughs in older sialic crust. However, this study supports a collisional model for the Slave Province, in which oceanic crust …
Precision Measurement Of Relative Dipole Matrix Elements In Atomic Sodium, Rodney P. Meyer
Precision Measurement Of Relative Dipole Matrix Elements In Atomic Sodium, Rodney P. Meyer
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Relative dipole matrix elements are measured by means of a new spectroscopic technique called polarization interference spectroscopy. It is a two-color two-photon nonresonant process that maps the matrix elements into the energy domain by means of quantum mechanical interference. The technique measures the relative magnitude of the reduced matrix elements, particularly those involving excited states, to accuracies that are an order of magnitude better than previously available. Also, for the first time the relative phase of the reduced matrix elements is measured. The ratio of reduced matrix elements for the transitions 3s 2S1/2 →3P 2P3/2 →5s …
Theoretical Investigation Of Two-Color, Two-Photon, 6s(2)S(1/2) → 5d(2)D(J) → 11p(2)P(3/2) Excitation And Depolarization Spectra In Atomic Cesium, Boris Dobrydnev
Theoretical Investigation Of Two-Color, Two-Photon, 6s(2)S(1/2) → 5d(2)D(J) → 11p(2)P(3/2) Excitation And Depolarization Spectra In Atomic Cesium, Boris Dobrydnev
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The theoretical investigation of two-photon, two-color intensity and depolarization spectra for the 6s2S1/2 → 5d2Dj → 11p2P3/2 transition in atomic caesium is considered. For quadrupole-dipole transitions the dependence of excitation from the ratio of reduced matrix elements is shown. The experimental method of determination of the value and sign of the ratio is proposed. Comparison of results for co- and counterpropagating beams revealed the strong dependence of the transition rate on the relative beam directions. Analysis of the influence of the external electric field on the process of absorption is presented. …
Comparing Traditional Statistical Models With Neural Network Models: The Case Of The Relation Of Human Performance Factors To The Outcomes Of Military Combat, William Oliver Hedgepeth
Comparing Traditional Statistical Models With Neural Network Models: The Case Of The Relation Of Human Performance Factors To The Outcomes Of Military Combat, William Oliver Hedgepeth
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Statistics and neural networks are analytical methods used to learn about observed experience. Both the statistician and neural network researcher develop and analyze data sets, draw relevant conclusions, and validate the conclusions. They also share in the challenge of creating accurate predictions of future events with noisy data.
Both analytical methods are investigated. This is accomplished by examining the veridicality of both with real system data. The real system used in this project is a database of 400 years of historical military combat. The relationships among the variables represented in this database are recognized as being hypercomplex and nonlinear.

Nozzle Flow With Vibrational Nonequilibrium, John Gary Landry
Nozzle Flow With Vibrational Nonequilibrium, John Gary Landry
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Flow of nitrogen gas through a converging-diverging nozzle is simulated. The flow is modeled using the Navier-Stokes equations that have been modified for vibrational nonequilibrium. The energy equation is replaced by two equations. One equation accounts for energy effects due to the translational and rotational degrees of freedom, and the other accounts for the affects due to the vibrational degree of freedom. The energy equations are coupled by a relaxation time which measures the time required for the vibrational energy component to equilibrate with the translational and rotational energy components. An improved relaxation time is used in this thesis. The …
Software Reliability Issues: An Experimental Approach, Mary Ann Hoppa
Software Reliability Issues: An Experimental Approach, Mary Ann Hoppa
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, we present methodologies involving a data structure called the debugging graph whereby the predictive performance of software reliability models can be analyzed and improved under laboratory conditions. This procedure substitutes the averages of large sample sets for the single point samples normally used as inputs to these models and thus supports scrutiny of their performances with less random input data.
Initially, we describe the construction of an extensive database of empirical reliability data which we derived by testing each partially debugged version of subject software represented by complete or partial debugging graphs. We demonstrate how these data …
Seismic Stratigraphic Analysis Of The Upper Indus-Fan Complex A Model For Fan Development, Syed Firasat Shah
Seismic Stratigraphic Analysis Of The Upper Indus-Fan Complex A Model For Fan Development, Syed Firasat Shah
OES Theses and Dissertations
The seismic stratigraphic analysis of the upper Indus-Fan Complex has revealed the presence of six depositional sequences. Deposition of these sequences occurred primarily during the Miocene period. The Indus River drainage system that developed as a consequence of Himalayan orogeny transported the bulk of the sediments deposited in the Indus Fan. The distribution and thickness of the sequences of the upper Indus Fan are closely related to the canyon-channel systems. Seismic facies analysis of the slope has revealed the presence of a facies relationship that shows continued deepening from the time of deposition of slope fan to the latest deposits …
Fixed Points Of Generalized Contractive Multi-Valued Mappings, Peter Z. Daffer, Hideaki Kaneko
Fixed Points Of Generalized Contractive Multi-Valued Mappings, Peter Z. Daffer, Hideaki Kaneko
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
In a recent paper N. Mizoguchi and W. Takahashi gave a positive answer to the conjecture of S. Reich concerning the existence of fixed points of multi-valued mappings that satisfy a certain contractive condition. In this paper, we provide an alternative and somewhat more straightforward proof for the theorem of Mizoguchi and Takahashi. Also the problems associated with fixed points of weakly contractive multi-valued mappings are studied. Finally, we make a few comments that improve other results from their paper (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 141 (1989), 177-188).
Error Estimates And Lipschitz Constants For Best Approximation In Continuous Function Spaces, M. Bartelt, W. Li
Error Estimates And Lipschitz Constants For Best Approximation In Continuous Function Spaces, M. Bartelt, W. Li
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
We use a structural characterization of the metric projection PG(f), from the continuous function space to its one-dimensional subspace G, to derive a lower bound of the Hausdorff strong unicity constant (or weak sharp minimum constant) for PG and then show this lower bound can be attained. Then the exact value of Lipschitz constant for PG is computed. The process is a quantitative analysis based on the Gâteaux derivative of PG, a representation of local Lipschitz constants, the equivalence of local and global Lipschitz constants for lower semicontinuous mappings, and construction …
The Pollution Effects Of Pleasure/Work Boat Sewage Discharges On Fecal Contamination Levels Of Waters In And Around Marinas And Other Places Where Boats Are Moored On The Eastern Shore Of Virginia, George H. Bangs
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
Contamination of seafood harvested from and recreational areas of the Chesapeake Bay, its tributaries and the Atlantic coast inshore waters may cause health problems for people consuming the seafood or coming in contact with the waters by swimming, water skiing, or other water sports. These health problems include, but not limited to, dysentery, typhoid and hepatitis (Natchez, 1990). This is a preliminary study into the level of fecal pollution generated by sewage discharges from boats in marinas and other places where boats are moored on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Sites selected for the study included; (I) marinas and other …
Autonomous Robot Navigation In Unknown Terrains Using Parallel Numerical Artificial Potential Fields, John C. Schneider
Autonomous Robot Navigation In Unknown Terrains Using Parallel Numerical Artificial Potential Fields, John C. Schneider
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
We present a new artificial potential field formulation for resolution complete robot navigation that unifies the purely geometric path planning problem with the lower level force control problem. Our formulation is designed for numerical computation over a massively parallel mesh of processors and is responsive to newly discovered terrain features. It does not suffer from many of the problems commonly associated with potential fields and with adequate resolution provides provably correct, collision free convergence to the goal. In addition, our formulation supports many desirable, practical features required for implementation, such as bounded actuator torques, attainable incremental constructability, realizable computation and …

Defining Locally Shared Memory Constructs For Special Purpose Parallel Architectures, David J. Nielsen
Defining Locally Shared Memory Constructs For Special Purpose Parallel Architectures, David J. Nielsen
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Locally shared memory systems offer significant advantages over other parallel processing systems for specific classes of problems. Locally shared memory systems tend to be easier to program because explicit passing of messages is not necessary. The goal in defining a locally shared memory system is to allow only a small number of processors access to any single memory. If this goal is met, locally shared memory systems provide an architecture which is relatively simple to implement.
To make shared memory architectures attractive to designers of special purpose parallel architectures, the architectures must be scalable. To be scalable, the number of …
Biofeedback Gait Training Auditory Vs. Visual Techniques, Timothy D. Hiemenz
Biofeedback Gait Training Auditory Vs. Visual Techniques, Timothy D. Hiemenz
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Training lower extremity amputees to walk normally is quite a difficult task. Amputees must wear a prosthesis so they can walk at all. This allows them some mobility, but their walking pattern may be unnatural. If their gait is temporally asymmetric, they need to exert more energy to move about. This research was initiated to help lower extremity amputees to walk more efficiently using biofeedback gait training. Two types of feedback were developed and tested to determine which method gave the most understandable feedback, validating its use in a clinical setting.
A normal gait cycle uses the lower limbs to …
