Thermal And Conductivity Studies Of Chitosan Acetate-Based Polymer Electrolytes, Zurina Osman
Zurina Osman
Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) have been employed to study the thermal stability of the chitosan acetate-based polymer electrolyte films. The glass transition temperature, T-g measurements confirm the conductivity enhancement effect by adding the plasticizer and salt in the chitosan acetate films

Runoff Production In The Upper Rio Chagres Watershed, Panama, Fred Ogden
Runoff Production In The Upper Rio Chagres Watershed, Panama, Fred Ogden
Fred L. Ogden
Runoff production in tropical watersheds is governed by a wide variety of potential sources and there have been few rigorous studies to date. The 414 km2 upper Río Chagres basin offers a unique opportunity to better understand the runoff production mechanisms in tropical watersheds through data analysis and modeling with rainfall and runoff data. Flow data and tipping bucket rain gage data are available at both the basin outlet (Chico gage) and for an 80.6 km2 internal basin location (Piedras gage). Modeling is performed using the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting Model (SAC-SMA), calibrated using data from 2000 and verified using …

Storm Deposited Fish Debris In The Cretaceous Mowry Shale Near Vernal, Utah, Alvin Anderson, Bart Kowallis
Bart J Kowallis
Isolated, lens-shaped accumulations of fi sh bones, scales, teeth, and coprolites in a sandy matrix occur along a few bedding planes within the Cretaceous Mowry Shale in an outcrop along Highway 191 north of Vernal, Utah. These accumulations have previously been interpreted to be large coprolites or regurgitate material, but are actually storm lag deposits in a sediment-starved basin. Accumulations (lenses) vary in size: the largest measured is 15 x 10 cm in plan view and 2 cm thick. Matrix in these lenses consist of fine-grained, well-rounded quartz grains that are absent in the surrounding shale layers. The disarticulated fossil …

Effects Of Electron Irradiation On The Ferroelectric Properties Of Langmuir-Blodgett Copolymer Films, Christina Othon, Fred Bateman, Stephen Ducharme
Effects Of Electron Irradiation On The Ferroelectric Properties Of Langmuir-Blodgett Copolymer Films, Christina Othon, Fred Bateman, Stephen Ducharme
Christina M Othon
The effect of irradiation on the ferroelectric properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films of the copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) was investigated using 1‐MeV electrons for doses from 0.16 to 1.10 MGy, where 1 Gray (Gy) = 100 rad. Irradiation causes a systematic decrease in the phase-transition temperature, crystallinity, and spontaneous polarization of the films. The crystallinity and spontaneous polarization of the films decreased by amounts proportional to the dose, both tending toward zero near a dose of 1.30 MGy. The ferroelectric-paraelectric phase-transition temperature, however, was only reduced by about 12%, indicating that the primary effect of irradiation was to convert a crystalline ferroelectric …

Mra Frame Wavelets With Certain Regularities Associated With The Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces, Tian-Xiao He
Mra Frame Wavelets With Certain Regularities Associated With The Refinable Generators Of Shift Invariant Spaces, Tian-Xiao He
Tian-Xiao He
In this paper, we will start the discussion with the refinable generators of the shift invariant (SI) spaces in L2 (R) that possess the largest possible regularities and required vanishing moments. For the pseudo-scaling generators, the corresponding MRA frame wavelets with certain regularities are constructed. In addition, the stability of the refinable SI spaces and the corresponding complementary spaces, biorthogonality of the SI spaces, and the approximation property of the spaces are also discussed.

A Symbolic Operator Approach To Several Summation Formulas For Power Series, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue, D. Torney
Tian-Xiao He
This paper deals with the summation problem of power series of the form Sba (f; x) = ∑a ≤ k ≤ b f(k) xk, where 0≤ a < b ≤ ∞, and {f(k)} is a given sequence of numbers with k Є [a, b) or f(t) is a differentiable function defined on [a, b). We present a symbolic summation operator with its various expansions, and construct several summation formulas with estimable remainders for Sba (f; x), by the aid of some classical interpolation series due to Newton, Gauss and Everett, respectively.

Stereochemical Promiscuity In Artificial Transcriptional Activators, Brian Brennan, Sara Buhrlage, Aaron Minter, Anna Mapp
Brian B. Brennan
Small molecule replacements of transcriptional activation domains are highly desirable targets due to their utility as mechanistic tools and their long-term therapeutic potential for a variety of human diseases. Here, we examine the ability of amphipathic isoxazolidines differing only in the placement of constituent side chains to function as transcriptional activation domains. The results reveal that precise positioning of functional groups within a conformationally constrained small molecule scaffold is not required for transcription function; rather, the balance of polarity and hydrophobicity within the scaffold is the more important determinant of transcription function. This suggests that a number of different organic …

Modeling Interaction Between Metacognition And Emotion In A Cognitive Architecture, Eva Hudlicka
Modeling Interaction Between Metacognition And Emotion In A Cognitive Architecture, Eva Hudlicka
Eva Hudlicka
While research in metacognition has grown significantly in the past 10 years, there has been a relative lack of research devoted to the focused study of the interactions between metacognition and affective processes. Computational models represent a useful tool which can help remedy this situation by constructing causal models of demonstrated correlational relationships, and by generating empirical hypotheses which can be verified experimentally. In this paper we describe enhancements to an existing cognitive–affective architecture that will enable it to perform a subset of metacognitive functions. We focus on modeling the role of a specific metacognitive factor, the feeling of confidence …
Approximate Solutions For Magmon Propagation From A Reservoir, Tim Marchant
Approximate Solutions For Magmon Propagation From A Reservoir, Tim Marchant
Tim Marchant
A 1D partial differential equation (pde) describing the flow of magma in the Earth's mantle is considered, this equation allowing for compaction and distension of the surrounding matrix due to the magma. The equation has periodic travelling wave solutions, one limit of which is a solitary wave, called a magmon. Modulation equations for the magma equation are derived and are found to be either hyperbolic or of mixed hyperbolic/elliptic type, depending on the specific values of the wave number, mean height and amplitude of the underlying modulated wave. The periodic wave train is stable in the hyperbolic case and unstable …
