Purchasing power parity (PPP) is an equilibrium condition equating the nominal exchange rate between two countries with the relative price of an identical bundle of goods in each country. Previous time-series researchers use price indicies to study PPP, so they study relative PPP. We use new data that measures price levels, so we test absolute PPP. Price levels provide a test of absolute PPP because, unlike price indicies, do not contain a base period in which the nominal exchange rate equals the price ratio by construction. We find support for absolute PPP.

The forces between a silica probe and silica and gold substrates were measured with an atomic force microscope in the presence of a series of alkali-halide electrolyte solutions. The interaction between two silica surfaces was repulsive and could be accurately predicted by Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory. The silica surface was negatively charged at a pH of 5.5 and the effective surface potential increased in magnitude with decreasing electrolyte concentration. In contrast, the force between the silica probe and a gold substrate was attractive at open circuit. This interaction was a strong function of the potential applied to the gold and the nature …

This paper presents a distributed control approach to legged locomotion that constructs behavior on-line by activating combinations of reusable feedback control laws drawn from a control basis. Sequences of such controller activations result in flexible aperiodic step sequences based on local sensory information. Different tasks are achieved by varying the composition functions over the same basis controllers, rather than by geometric planning of leg placements or the design of new task-specific behaviors. In addition, the device-independent nature of the control basis allows its generalization not only over task domains, but also over different hardware platforms. To show the applicability of …

An Augmented Galerkin Algorithms For First Kind Integral Equations Of Hammerstein Type, S. Abbasbandy, E. Babolian
Saeid Abbasbandy
Recent papers, [1],[2] & [3], describe some algorithms for linear first kind integral equations. These algorithms are based on augmented Galerkin method and Cross-validation scheme [5]. The results show that, these algorithms work well for linear equations. In this paper we apply algorithms of [1] & [2] on non-linear first kind integral equations of Hammerstein type with bounded solution. In order to obtain a posteriori error estimate, we apply fifteen-point Gauss-Kronrod quadrature rule [4]. Finally, we give a number of numerical examples showing that the algorithms work well in practice.

Purchasing Power Parity, Unit Roots And Dynamic Structure, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Purchasing Power Parity, Unit Roots And Dynamic Structure, Douglas G. Steigerwald
Douglas G. Steigerwald
Recent studies of puchasing power parity (PPP) account for the possible presence of unit roots in nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies by applying standard unit-root tests to real exchange rates, which are ratios of nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies. These studies occasionally find evidence of PPP but, as a whole, the evidence is not definitive. Standard unit-root tests impose a restrictive dynamic structure between nominal exchange rates and relative price indicies. I specify and estimate a generalized dynamic structure. I reject the dynamic restrictions implicit in standard unit-root tests of PPP, and find stronger evidence of …
Achieving Balance In Software Engineering Curricula, Tim Comber, Bruce Lo, Richard Watson
Achieving Balance In Software Engineering Curricula, Tim Comber, Bruce Lo, Richard Watson
Tim Comber
Achieving balance is an issue that faces all curriculum designers. The complexity of the software process demands a pluralistic approach to systems development. This pluralism must also be reflected in the education and training of future software engineers. How can we integrate the diverse views into a unified curriculum framework? How can we cover all topics that are deemed essential for the discipline. We must balance specialised software engineering topics with fundamental topics in computer science and we must also balance the variety of software engineering topics amongst themselves within the relatively short three-year undergraduate curriculum. Very often, what is …

We estimate the cross section for quasielastic double pion exchange in high energy proton-proton collisions. Total and elastic ππ cross sections are calculated in an equivalent pion approximation, with pion-baryon vertices taken from chiral perturbation theory.

The In Situ Passive Acoustic Measurement Of Shingle Movement Under Waves And Currents: Instrument (Tosca) Development And Preliminary Results, George Voulgaris, Michael Wilkin, Michael Collins
George Voulgaris
An instrumented platform (TOSCA) is described for monitoring coarse-grained sediment transport in high (wave and tidal) energy environments. The system consists of a number of sensors which measure: instantaneous current velocities at three levels; sea surface elevation; and self-generated noise (SGN) caused by intercollision of particles in transit. SGN is related to transport rates, on the basis of laboratory calibration; this, in turn, allows a correlation with simultaneous near-bed shear stress to be established. During the field measurements, PC-based real-time data transmission is realised through the use of a (buoyed) radio telemetry system.
TOSCA has been deployed in eastern Christchurch …

A Unified Topological Approach To Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Protection, George H. Baker, J. Philip Castillo, Edward F. Vance
A Unified Topological Approach To Electromagnetic Environmental Effects Protection, George H. Baker, J. Philip Castillo, Edward F. Vance
George H Baker
The presentation recommends an approach for unifying electronic system protection designs for a wide spectrum of electromagnetic environments. A general electromagnetic topological construct is developed as the basis for a consistent shielding and terminal protection methodology. Spectral characteristics of multiple interfering electromagnetic sources, both internal and external, are described. Effects addressed include EMI/EMC, lightning, nuclear EMP, and RF weapons. Protection practices for individual effects are discussed and means for integrating these into a single protection topology.

We observed the generation of subharmonics and chaos in a nanometer-sized mechanical contact. To first order, the behavior matches that of macroscopic systems, with some intriguing secondary differences. As the occurrence of periodic behavior (subharmonics) is related to the coefficient of restitution, it may be possible to image local energy dissipation with nanometer resolution.
