Subduction Of The Caribbean Plate And Basement Uplifts In The Overriding South American Plate, James N. Kellogg, William E. Bonini May 1982

Subduction Of The Caribbean Plate And Basement Uplifts In The Overriding South American Plate, James N. Kellogg, William E. Bonini

James N Kellogg

Abstract. The new tectonic interpretations presented in this paper are based on geologic field mapping and gravity data supplemented by well logs, seismic profiles, and radiometric and earthquake data. The present Caribbean-South American plate boundary is the South Caribbean marginal fault, where subduction is indicated by folding and thrusting in the deformed belt and a seismic zone that dips 30o to the southeast and terminates 200 km below the Maracaibo Basin. The Caribbean-South American convergence rate is estimated as 1.9 +_. 0.3 cm/yr on the basis of the 390-km length of the seismic zone and a thermal equilibration time of …

Path-Integrals And The Wkb Approximation, Br Holstein, Ar Swift

Barry R Holstein

The WKB approximation is demonstrated to be formally identical to the semiclassical limit of the Feynman path integral propagator. In the limit that the path integral propagator is dominated by the classical particle trajectory, it is identical to the propagator calculated directly from WKB wave functions in the stationary phase approximation.

Effects Of Earthquake On Traditional Houses Of Kathmandu, Bhishna Bajracharya Dec 1981

Effects Of Earthquake On Traditional Houses Of Kathmandu, Bhishna Bajracharya

Bhishna Bajracharya

The paper explains some of the earthquake resistance measures in traditional houses of Kathmandu, Nepal. They include symmetry in design of buildings, double framing of openings and system of wooden wedges to secure timber joists with walls, all of which can help reduce earthquake effects. Based on information from secondary sources, the paper also discusses the causes of  extensive damage in Kathmandu Valley after the major earthquake of 1934 and argues the need for the design against roof collapse to minimize the loss of lives during earthquakes in Nepal.

Cluster Analysis To Determine Headache Types, Paula Diehr Dec 1981

Cluster Analysis To Determine Headache Types, Paula Diehr

Paula Diehr

Cluster analysis was used to separate 726 headache patients into clusters of patients with similar symptoms. This was done to answer two questions: what "naturally occurring' groups of patients can be found? And how do these groups correspond to traditional headache types? When only two clusters were required, the best two clusters were tension and migraine-like. However, eight clusters could also be distinguished, and the migraine group then became very small. The clusters were tested for clinical interpretability by having 12 physicians name and prescribe treatment for the clusters. The suggested treatment was similar to what patients had actually received …

Comment On Particle Mixing And Delta-I= 3/2 Terms In Non-Leptonic Weak Decays, Br Holstein Jul 1981

Comment On Particle Mixing And Delta-I= 3/2 Terms In Non-Leptonic Weak Decays, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

A recent paper by Gusbin concludes that ΔI=3/2 terms in K→πη can substantially modify particle-mixing contributions to K+→π+π0. Using techniques which can successfully reproduce the experimental features of the K→ππ decays, we argue that this seems unlikely.

Implications Of Nuclear Parity Non-Conservation, Jf Donoghue, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

From recent developments in the area of nuclear parity nonconservation we extract evidence for (1) SU(3) /soft-pion breaking in weak pionic vertices, and (2) larger values of quark masses than have been used in previous evaluations of "penguin" matrix elements.

Direct Nmr Observation Of Rotational Freeze-Out In The Smectic C-Phase, Demetri J. Photinos, Philip J. Bos, Mary E. Neubert, J. William Doane May 1981

Direct Nmr Observation Of Rotational Freeze-Out In The Smectic C-Phase, Demetri J. Photinos, Philip J. Bos, Mary E. Neubert, J. William Doane

Philip J. Bos

We report here a simple and direct observation that the molecular long axis is not, on the average, a rotation axis for the entire molecule in the smectic C phase (rotational freeze-out). This observation is made in the compound 4-n-heptyl-d15-oxybenzoic acid-d1 where experiment clearly shows that the principal axes of the time-averaged deuterium quadrupole interactions at specific sites of the hydrocarbon chain are not all parallel, demonstrating that they do not share a common axis of rotation.

Induced Tensor And Ft Asymmetries, Br Holstein Mar 1981

Induced Tensor And Ft Asymmetries, Br Holstein

Barry R Holstein

Looked at from a model-independent point of view, the existence of a non-zero first class induced tensor form factor appears to provide a substantial contribution to the observed ft asymmetry in mirror Gamow-Teller beta decays. However, we demonstrate that, when analyzed in terms of the impulse approximation, this is only a negligibly small effect. RADIOACTIVITY Calculated contribution to ft asymmetry from first class induced tensor.

Triple Gamma Directional Correlations In The Decay Of Europium-154, Gary Lewis Dec 1980

Triple Gamma Directional Correlations In The Decay Of Europium-154, Gary Lewis

Gary C. Lewis

The ('154)Eu nucleus decays by beta emission to an excited state of the ('154)Gd nucleus. The resulting ('154)Gd nucleus decays to its ground state by emission of gamma rays. One series of gamma rays emitted in this process is a cascade of energies 723 keV, 873 keV, and 123 keV. The 873 keV gamma ray is a mixture of E2 and M1 radiation. The mixing ratio of this transition has been measured using the triple gamma directional correlation technique. The experiments used a planar geometry with one angle fixed at 90 degrees. Two Ge(Li) detectors and one NaI(T1) detector were …

Laminations, Or How To Build A Quantum-Logic-Valued Model Of Set Theory, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

An explicit construction of the colimit of a filtered diagram in the category of topoi and logical morphisms is given and then used to construct a family of topoi with a fixed Boolean algebra of truth values but with varying amounts of cocompleteness. This same construction, when applied to the diagram of complete Boolean algebras in a quantum logic Q gives a partial topos, a noncategory which is a close to being a model of set theory with algebra of truth values Q as a noncategory can be.

Emp Analysis Of An Fm Communications Radio With A Long Wire Antenna, George H. Baker Iii, Werner J. Stark May 1978

Emp Analysis Of An Fm Communications Radio With A Long Wire Antenna, George H. Baker Iii, Werner J. Stark

George H Baker

A Norton equivalent circuit is developed for a long-wire antenna used with a VHF man-pack FM radio exposed to an incident electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The required short-circuit current and antenna impedance are computed by use of a transmission-line model for the antenna, and the computations are compared with measurements of the short-circuit current and antenna impedance. The comparison shows that the transmission-line model for the antenna is adequate for performing a vulnerability analysis of the radio. A network model is developed for a portion of the radio and is used as the load in the Norton equivalent circuit. Load currents …

Independence Theories And Generalized Zero-One Laws, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

In this paper an abstract characterization of the properties of independent events is given with examples from topology, probability, and Baire structures. Using this notion of independence, proofs of the Hewitt-Savage and Kolmogorov zero-one laws are given which include the probabilistic case and the topological cases considered by Oxtoby, Christensen, and K. P. S. and M. Bhaskara Rao.

Weak Type Multipliers For Hankel Transforms, William C. Connett, Alan L. Schwartz Feb 1976

Weak Type Multipliers For Hankel Transforms, William C. Connett, Alan L. Schwartz

UMSL Emeritus

The main result of this paper is that weak type multiplier theorems for Jacobi expansions yield weak type multiplier theorems for Hankel transforms.

In recent papers the authors studied multiplier theorems for ultraspherical and Jacobi expansions. An interesting paper of Igari suggested a new approach to multiplier theorems that used asymptotics instead of the elaborate machinery used earlier.

This paper extends the method of Igari to give the first weak type multiplier theorem for Hankel transforms. This extension is important in itself and because this method together with the authors’ results for Jacobi multipliers will generalize to the “radial” functions …

Topological Properties Of The Real Numbers Object In A Topos, Lawrence Stout Dec 1975

Topological Properties Of The Real Numbers Object In A Topos, Lawrence Stout

Lawrence N. Stout

In his presentation at the categories Session at Oberwolfach in 1973, Tierney defined the continuous reals for a topos with a natural numbers object (he called them Dedekind reals). Mulvey studied the algebraic properties of the object of continuous reals and proved that the construction gave the sheaf of germs of continuous functions from X to R in the spatial topos Sh( X). This paper presents the results of the study of the topological properties of the continuous reals with an emphasis on similarities with classical mathematics and applications to familiar concepts rephrased in topos terms.
