Artificial Intelligence And Role-Reversible Judgment, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez Dec 2017

Artificial Intelligence And Role-Reversible Judgment, Stephen E. Henderson, Kiel Brennan-Marquez

Stephen E Henderson

As intelligent machines begin more generally outperforming human experts, why should humans remain ‘in the loop’ of decision-making?  One common answer focuses on outcomes: relying on intuition and experience, humans are capable of identifying interpretive errors—sometimes disastrous errors—that elude machines.  Though plausible today, this argument will wear thin as technology evolves.

Here, we seek out sturdier ground: a defense of human judgment that focuses on the normative integrity of decision-making.  Specifically, we propose an account of democratic equality as ‘role-reversibility.’  In a democracy, those tasked with making decisions should be susceptible, reciprocally, to the impact of decisions; there ought to …

Blockchain And Smart Contracts: The Missing Link In Copyright Licensing?, Balazs Bodo, Daniel Gervais, Joao Pedro Quintais Dec 2017

Blockchain And Smart Contracts: The Missing Link In Copyright Licensing?, Balazs Bodo, Daniel Gervais, Joao Pedro Quintais

Daniel J Gervais

This article offers a normative analysis of key blockchain technology concepts from the
perspective of copyright law. Some features of blockchain technologies—scarcity, trust,
transparency, decentralized public records and smart contracts—seem to make this
technology compatible with the fundamentals of copyright. Authors can publish works
on blockchain creating a quasi-immutable record of initial ownership, and encode
‘smart’ contracts to license the use of works. Remuneration may happen on online distribution
platforms where the smart contracts reside. In theory, such an automated
setup allows for the private ordering of copyright. Blockchain technology, like Digital
Rights Management 20 years ago, is thus presented …

Background
In Vietnam, malaria transmission has been reduced to very low levels over the past 20 years, and as a consequence, the country aims to eliminate malaria by 2030. This study aimed to characterize the dynamics and extent of the parasite reservoir in Central Vietnam, in order to further target elimination strategies and surveillance.
Methods
A 1-year prospective cohort study (n = 429) was performed in three rural communities in Quang Nam province. Six malaria screenings were conducted between November 2014 and November 2015, including systematic clinical examination and blood sampling for malaria parasite identification, as well as molecular and serological …

Malaria Elimination: Time To Target All Species, Andrew A. Lover, J. Kevin Baird, Roly Gosling, Ric N. Price Dec 2017

Malaria Elimination: Time To Target All Species, Andrew A. Lover, J. Kevin Baird, Roly Gosling, Ric N. Price

Andrew Lover

Important strides have been made within the past decade toward malaria elimination in many regions, and with this progress, the feasibility of eradication is once again under discussion. If the ambitious goal of eradication is to be achieved by 2040, all species of Plasmodium infecting humans will need to be targeted with evidence-based and concerted interventions. In this perspective, the potential barriers to achieving global malaria elimination are discussed with respect to the related diversities in host, parasite, and vector populations. We argue that control strategies need to be reorientated from a sequential attack on each species, dominated by Plasmodium …

Econometric Modeling Of Regional Electricity Spot Prices In The Australian Market, Michael S. Smith, Thomas S. Shively Dec 2017

Econometric Modeling Of Regional Electricity Spot Prices In The Australian Market, Michael S. Smith, Thomas S. Shively

Michael Stanley Smith

Wholesale electricity markets are increasingly integrated via high voltage interconnectors, and inter-regional
trade in electricity is growing. To model this, we consider a spatial equilibrium model of price formation, where constraints on inter-regional flows result in three distinct equilibria in prices. We use this to motivate an econometric model for the distribution of observed electricity spot prices that captures many of their unique empirical characteristics. The econometric model features supply and inter-regional trade cost functions, which are estimated using Bayesian monotonic regression smoothing methodology. A copula multivariate time series model is employed to capture additional dependence --- both cross-sectional and serial --- in …

Learning About Modeling In Teacher Preparation Programs, Hyunyi Jung, Eryn Stehr, Jia He, Sharon L. Senk Dec 2017

Learning About Modeling In Teacher Preparation Programs, Hyunyi Jung, Eryn Stehr, Jia He, Sharon L. Senk

Hyunyi Jung

This study explores opportunities that secondary mathematics teacher preparation programs provide to learn about modeling in algebra. Forty-eight course instructors and ten focus groups at five universities were interviewed to answer questions related to modeling. With the analysis of the interview transcripts and related course materials, we found few opportunities for PSTs to engage with the full modeling cycle. Examples of opportunities to learn about algebraic modeling and the participants’ perspectives on the opportunities can contribute to the study of modeling and algebra in teacher education.

Teaching Statistics To Msw Students: Comparing Credit And Non-Credit Options, Ashley Davis, Rebecca G. Mirick Dec 2017

Teaching Statistics To Msw Students: Comparing Credit And Non-Credit Options, Ashley Davis, Rebecca G. Mirick

Rebecca Mirick

In professional disciplines like social work, students are expected to be able to understand and apply basic statistical concepts. Graduate programs differ in how they expect students to develop this ability; some require a full-credit statistics course as a prerequisite to admission, and others incorporate statistics into social work research courses. The for-credit requirement has a high financial and time cost for students. This exploratory study examined the feasibility of replacing this requirement with a brief, non-credit statistics course. MSW students (n=168) who took both types of courses were surveyed. No association was found between the type of course and …

Experimenting With The Identity (Xy)Z = Y(Zx), Irvin Roy Hentzel, David P. Jacobs, Sekhar V. Muddana Dec 2017

Experimenting With The Identity (Xy)Z = Y(Zx), Irvin Roy Hentzel, David P. Jacobs, Sekhar V. Muddana

Irvin Roy Hentzel

An experiment with the nonassociative algebra program Albert led to the discovery of the following surprising theorem. Let G be a groupoid satisfying the identity (xy)z = y(zx). Then for products in G involving at least five elements, all factors commute and associate. A corollary is that any semiprime ring satisfying this identity must be commutative and associative, generalizing a known result of Chen.

Semiprime Locally(-1, 1) Ring With Minimal Condition, Irvin R. Hentzel, H. F. Smith Dec 2017

Semiprime Locally(-1, 1) Ring With Minimal Condition, Irvin R. Hentzel, H. F. Smith

Irvin Roy Hentzel

Let L be a left ideal of a right alternative ring A with characteristic ::/=2. If L is maximal and nil, then L is a two-sided ideal. If L is minimal, then it is either a two-sided ideal, or the ideal it generates is contained in the right nucleus of A. In particular, if A is prime, then a minimal left ideal of A must be a two-sided ideal. Let A be a semiprime locally (-1, 1) ring with characteristic ::1=2, 3. Then A is isomorphic to a subdirect sum of an alternative ring, a strong (-1, 1) ring, and …

We construct the minimal identities for Bernstein algebras, exceptional Bernstein algebras and normal Bernstein algebras. We use the technique of processing identities via the representation of the symmetric groups. The computer algorithms for creating the standard tableaus and the integral representations are summarized.

Counterexamples In Nonassociative Algebra, Irvin R. Hentzel, Luiz Antonio Peresi Dec 2017

Counterexamples In Nonassociative Algebra, Irvin R. Hentzel, Luiz Antonio Peresi

Irvin Roy Hentzel

We present a method of constructing counterexamples in nonassociative algebra. The heart of the computation is constructing a matrix of identities and reducing this matrix (usually very sparse) to row canonical form. The example is constructed from the entries in one column of this row canonical form. While this procedure is not polynomial in the degree of the identity, several shortcuts are listed which shorten calculations. Several examples are given.

On Preserving Structured Matrices Using Double Bracket Operators: Tridiagonal And Toeplitz Matrices, Kenneth Driessel, Irvin R. Hentzel, Wasin So

Irvin Roy Hentzel

In the algebra of square matrices over the complex numbers, denotes Two problems are solved: (1) Find all Hermitian matrices M which have the following property: For every Hermitian matrix A, if A is tridiagonal, then so is (2) Find all Hermitian matrices M which have the following property: For every Hermitian matrix A, if A is Toeplitz, then so is

On Prime Right Alternative Algebras And Alternators, Giulia Maria Piacentini Cattaneo, Irvin R. Hentzel Dec 2017

On Prime Right Alternative Algebras And Alternators, Giulia Maria Piacentini Cattaneo, Irvin R. Hentzel

Irvin Roy Hentzel

We study subvarieties of the variety of right alternative algebras over a field of characteristic t2,t3 such that the defining identities of the variety force the span of the alternators to be an ideal and do not force an algebra with identity element to be alternative. We call a member of such a variety a right alternative alternator ideal algebra. We characterize the algebras of this subvariety by finding an identity which holds if and only if an algebra belongs to the subvariety. We use this identity to prove that if R is a prime, right alternative alternator ideal algebra …

Dft Calculation Of Frontier Orbitals And Electronic Communication Of Porphyrin Arrays.Pdf, Jason Facchetti Dec 2017

Dft Calculation Of Frontier Orbitals And Electronic Communication Of Porphyrin Arrays.Pdf, Jason Facchetti

Jason Facchetti

Electronic donor–acceptor communication in porphyrin-based molecular electronics is addressed theoretically. The order of the a1u and a2u frontier occupied orbitals has been proposed by others to affect excited energy transfer. We examined the effects of the nature and pattern of substituents upon analog monomer porphyrin orbitals using DFT (B3LYP/6-31G(d,p)) and the four-orbital model of porphyrin electronic structure. The excited state energy transfer rate was found to be very sensitive to these orbitals' contributions to porphyrin uv/visible absorptions (B- and Q-band). Ground state homodimer calculations validated the monomer results.

New Numerical Code For Black Hole Initial Data, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton Dec 2017

New Numerical Code For Black Hole Initial Data, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton

Maria C. Babiuc-Hamilton

There are no exact solutions of Einstein Equations that describes a bound system radiating gravitational waves. One needs to resort to numerical simulations, or analytical approximation methods. Current methods to constrained initial data exhibit junk radiation and ambiguities about constrained and free data. It was mathematically proved that given the correct initial data, Einstein equation will yield the expected solution.

Learning To Teach And Teaching To Learn, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton Dec 2017

Learning To Teach And Teaching To Learn, Maria Babiuc-Hamilton

Maria C. Babiuc-Hamilton

New studies show that students do better in science classes that are taught interactively. We compare two different pedagogical approaches in teaching introductory physics: the lecture-based method, the active learning laboratories. We present the data on student performance on exams, homework, lab activities and tests, from 126 students taking the 200-level introductory physics courses at Marshall University, in Huntington, WV. We discuss the efficiency of each method in fostering the success of students in the introductory physics courses. We find that subtle differentiations can be implicitly detected in students’ exam grades, homework, participation, and choice of major.

Carbide-Derived Carbon By Electrochemical Etching Of Vanadium Carbides, Luis G.B. Camargo, Benjamin G. Palazzo, Greg Taylor, Zach A. Norris, Yash K. Patel, Jeffrey D. Hettinger, Lei Yu Nov 2017

Carbide-Derived Carbon By Electrochemical Etching Of Vanadium Carbides, Luis G.B. Camargo, Benjamin G. Palazzo, Greg Taylor, Zach A. Norris, Yash K. Patel, Jeffrey D. Hettinger, Lei Yu

Jeffrey Hettinger

Carbide-derived Carbon (CDC) has been demonstrated to be an excellent electrode material for electrochemical devices including supercapacitors due to its chemical and electrochemical stability, large specific surface area and controllable pore size and morphology. Currently, CDC is prepared from metal carbides by chlorination in a chlorine gas atmosphere at temperatures of 350°C or higher. In this paper, conversion using electrochemical methods is reported, which can be achieved by oxidizing vanadium carbides (VC or V2C) in aqueous solutions at room temperature and a mild electrode potential to prepare CDC thin film as electrode materials for “on-chip” supercapacitiors. It was found that …

Behavior Of Na+-Polystyrene Sulfonate At The Interface With Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (Swnts) And Its Implication To Swnt Suspension Stability, Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Richard Chevious, Yuri Lvov Nov 2017

Behavior Of Na+-Polystyrene Sulfonate At The Interface With Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (Swnts) And Its Implication To Swnt Suspension Stability, Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Richard Chevious, Yuri Lvov

Tabbetha A. Dobbins

The assembly of sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Na+-PSS) at the surface of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in pH 3 aqueous solution is described. Rather than forming linear or sheet-like chain morphologies over SWNT surfaces, Na+-PSS adopts a spherically collapsed conformation believed to be the result of cation (either Na+ or H+) condensation onto the ionized polymer chain. It is well reported that cations (and also anions) adsorb preferentially onto single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotube surfaces leading to an increased ion concentration in the near surface regions relative to the bulk solution. This work provides experimental evidence for preferentially absorbed cation condensation …

Study Of Morphological Changes In Mgh2 Destabilized Libh4 Systems Using Computed X-Ray Microtomography, Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Shathabish Narasegowda, Leslie G. Butler Nov 2017

Study Of Morphological Changes In Mgh2 Destabilized Libh4 Systems Using Computed X-Ray Microtomography, Tabbetha A. Dobbins, Shathabish Narasegowda, Leslie G. Butler

Tabbetha A. Dobbins

The objective of this study was to apply three-dimensional x-ray microtomographic imaging to understanding morphologies in the diphasic destabilized hydride system: MgH2 and LiBH4. Each of the single phase hydrides as well as two-phase mixtures at LiBH4:MgH2 ratios of 1:3, 1:1, and 2:1 were prepared by high energy ball milling for 5 minutes (with and without 4 mol % TiCl3 catalyst additions). Samples were imaged using computed microtomography in order to (i) establish measurement conditions leading to maximum absorption contrast between the two phases and (ii) determine interfacial volume. The optimal energy for measurement was determined to be 15 keV …
