Flagellar biogenesis is a complex process that involves multiple checkpoints to coordinate transcription of flagellar genes with the assembly of the flagellum. In Helicobacter pylori, transcription of the genes needed in the middle stage of flagellar biogenesis is governed by RpoN and the two-component system consisting of the histidine kinase FlgS and response regulator FlgR. In response to an unknown signal, FlgS autophosphorylates and transfers the phosphate to FlgR, initiating transcription from RpoNdependent promoters. The effective extinction law (attenuation behavior) in galaxies in the emitted ultraviolet (UV) regime is well known only for actively star-forming objects and combines effects of the grain properties, fine structure in the dust distribution, and relative distributions of stars and dust. We use Galaxy Evolution Explorer, XMM Optical Monitor, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data to explore the UV attenuation in the outer parts of spiral disks which are backlit by other UV-bright galaxies, starting with the candidate list of pairs provided by Galaxy Zoo participants. We have mapped the distribution of young and old stars in the gaseous H i warp of NGC 4565. We find a clear correlation of young stars (< 600 Myr) with the warp but no coincident old stars (> 1 Gyr), which places an upper limit on the age of the structure. The formation rate of the young stars, which increased ∼ 300 Myr ago relative to the surrounding regions, is (6.3+2.5 −1.5) × 10−5 M yr−1 kpc−2. This implies a ∼ 60 ± 20 Gyr depletion time of the H i warp, similar to the timescales calculated for the outer H i disks of nearby spiral galaxies. While some stars …

Scale-invariant morphology parameters applied to atomic hydrogen maps (H i) of galaxies can be used to quantify the effects of tidal interaction or star formation on the interstellar matter (ISM). Here we apply these parameters, concentration, asymmetry, smoothness, Gini, M20, and the GM parameter, to two public surveys of nearby dwarf galaxies, the Very Large Array-ANGST and Local Irregulars That Trace Luminosity Extremes-The H i Nearby Galaxy Survey, to explore whether tidal interaction or the ongoing or past star formation is a dominant force shaping the H i disc of these dwarfs. Stellar bars can lead to gas inflow toward the center of a galaxy and stimulate nuclear star formation. However, there is no compelling evidence on whether they also feed a central supermassive black hole: by measuring the fractions of barred active and inactive galaxies, previous studies have yielded conflicting results. Star-forming regions that are visible at 3.6 μm and Hα but not in the u, g, r, i, z bands of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are measured in five nearby spiral galaxies to find extinctions averaging ∼3.8 mag and stellar masses averaging ∼5 × 104 M. These regions are apparently young star complexes embedded in dark filamentary shock fronts connected with spiral arms. The associated cloud masses are ∼107 M. The conditions required to make such complexes are explored, including gravitational instabilities in spiral-shocked gas and compression of incident clouds. We report the discovery of a new faint dwarf galaxy, GHOSTS I, using HST/ACS data from one of our GHOSTS (Galaxy Halos, Outer disks, Substructure, Thick disk, and Star clusters) fields. Its detected individual stars populate an approximately 1 mag range of its luminosity function (LF). Using synthetic color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to compare with the galaxy’s CMD, we find that the colors and magnitudes of GHOSTS I’s individual stars are most consistent with being young helium-burning and asymptotic giant branch stars at a distance of ∼12±2 Mpc. Morphologically, GHOSTS I appears to be actively forming stars, so we tentatively classify …

The morphology of galaxies can be quantified to some degree using a set of scale-invariant parameters. Concentration (C), asymmetry (A), smoothness (S), the Gini index (G), the relative contribution of the brightest pixels to the secondorder moment of the flux (M20), ellipticity (E), and the Gini index of the second-order moment (GM) have all been applied to morphologically classify galaxies at various wavelengths. Context. Resonance rings and pseudorings (here collectively called rings) are thought to be related to the gathering of material near dynamical resonances caused by non-axisymmetries in galaxy discs. This means that they are the result of secular evolution processes that redistribute material and angular momentum in discs. This study measures Radiation Induced Conductivity (RIC) in five insulating polymeric materials over temperatures ranging from ~110 K to ~350 K: polyimide (PI or Kapton HNTM and Kapton ETM), polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE or TeflonTM), ethylene-tetraflouroethylene (ETFE or TefzelTM), and Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE). RIC occurs when incident ionizing radiation deposits energy and excites electrons into the conduction band of insulators. Conductivity was measured when a voltage was applied across vacuum-baked, thin film polymer samples in a parallel plate geometry. A series of novel 1,3-dithiolane-2-thiones, or cyclic trithiocarbonates, has been prepared by a new simple procedure: a treatment of the corresponding epoxides with the commercially available potassium ethyl xanthogenate, KSC(S)OEt. The stereochemistry of the products was determined by 1 H NMR and in some cases by single-crystal X-ray data. Cyclohexane-based 1,3- dithiolane-2-thiones revealed a trans-fusion of the carbo- and hetero-cycles. The products obtained from the mono-substituted cyclohexene oxides demonstrated an axial position of the substituents. Thus the epoxide transformation into trithiocarbonate can be used as a method for locking cyclic compounds in unstable conformations.

The synthesis of amide-linked disaccharide mimetics has been explored starting with carbohydrate-based amines and a protected quinic acid lactone. Benzyl-2-amino-4,6-Obenzylidene-2-deoxy-α/β-D-glucopyranose (12) and D-glucamine (14) were successfully coupled to give the corresponding quinamides (13 and 15), while the quinoylation of Oacetylated L-fucopyranosyl methylamine (7) failed. The latter was prepared from per-O-acetylL-fucopyranose via the improved multigram scale synthesis of the corresponding per-O-acetylL-fucopyranosyl cyanide (3). Compound 3 was subsequently hydrogenated to yield a mixture of compound 7 and the per-O-acetylated bis-(fucopyranosylmethyl) amine (5). The NMR-structures of six polyphenols, resveratrol (1), (-)-epicatechin (2), pelargonidin chloride (3), cyanidin chloride (4), cyanin chloride (5), and keracyanin chloride (6), were fully assigned. For the glycosylated polyphenols 5 and 6, the three-dimensional solution structure and long-range 1 H- 13C-coupling constants across the glycosidic bond were measured. Satisfactory fit to standard Karplus-equations was achieved for glycosides directly attached to the aromatic core in cyanin chloride. Molecular dynamics simulation data in vacuum at the AM1-level of theory were shown to approximate the NMR-solution data reasonably well. We designed multiple Small Cluster Oligosaccharide Mimetics (SCOMs) - potential glycosidase inhibitors - to be metabolically stable and small enough to enter cells or bacteria. Therefore, minimal scaffolds (urea, amide, ammonia) or simply non-glycosidic linkages of carbohydrate structures were central to our synthetic strategy, including: (a) coupling of several natural carbohydrate precursors; (b) total syntheses of aminomethyl tetrahydropyrans and their chiral amides with quinic acid; (c) glycopyranosyl cyanide reduction to prepare crowded clusters on a urea scaffold; (d) total syntheses via cycloadditions leading to amide-linked C-glycosides; (e) reduction of nitromethyl C-glycosides; and (f) a synthesis of hydroxylated 1,2- cyclohexanedicarboxylic acids.

Three small cluster oligosaccharide mimetics were synthesized, and their CDCl3 solution conformations were determined with NMR experiments. In this paper, we confirmed conformational similarities in rings A and B in all three compounds, and we provide the overall solution geometries. In all cases, an unusual cyclohexane twist-boat conformation with longrange 4 J-(W)-coupling was observed. The origin of the bias towards the twist-boat was attributed primarily to the fused ring system between the cyclohexane ring and the dioxacyclopentane (acetal) including hydrogen bonding. Temperature-annealed molecular dynamics simulations complemented the NMR experiments and supported the overall assignment.

Progress is described in experiments to generate coherent terahertz acoustic phonons in silicon doping superlattices by the resonant absorption of nanosecond-pulsed far-infrared laser radiation. Future experiments are proposed that would use the superlattice as a transducer in a terahertz cryogenic acoustic reflection microscope with sub-nanometer resolution.

The electron range of a material is the maximum distance electrons can travel through a material, before losing all of their incident kinetic energy. A model developed by the Materials Research Group that calculates electron penetration range of some common materials, has been greatly expanded with the hope that such extensions will predict the range in other, perhaps, more interesting materials. Developments in this extended model aid in predicting the approximate penetration depth into diverse classes of materials for a broad range of energetic incident electrons (<10 eV to>10 MeV, with better than 20% accuracy). A model has been developed to predict the approximate penetration depth into diverse classes of materials for a broad range of energetic incident electrons (<10 eV to >10 MeV, with better than 20% accuracy). The penetration depth—or range—of a material describes the maximum distance electrons can travel through a material, before losing all of its incident kinetic energy. This model leads to a predictive formula that estimates the penetration depth for materials without the need for supporting data, but rather using only basic material properties and a single fitting parameter (Nv, described as the effective number of valence electrons). We prove that a k-tree can be viewed as a subgraph of a special type of (k + 1)- tree that corresponds to a stacked polytope and that these “stacked” (k + 1)-trees admit representations by orthogonal spheres in R k+1. As a result, we derive lower bounds for Colin de Verdi`ere’s µ of complements of partial k-trees and prove that µ(G) + µ(G) > |G| − 2 for all chordal G.

We seek conditions implying that (β X\X) \ {y} is not normal. Our main theorem: Assume GCH and all uniform ultrafilters are regular. If X is a locally compact metrizable space without isolated points, then (β X\X) \ {y} is not normal for all y ∈ β X\X. In preparing to prove this theorem, we generalize the notions “uniform”, “regular”, and “good” from set ultrafilters to z-ultrafilters. We discuss non-normality points of the product of a discrete space and the real line. We topologically embed a nonstandard real line into the remainder of this product space.

Binary classification problems are ubiquitous in health and social sciences. In many cases, one wishes to balance two competing optimality considerations for a binary classifier. An alite-calcium sulfoaluminate (ACSA) clinker containing approximately 50% alite and 10% ye'elimite was synthesised at 1300°C using a laboratory furnace and 1% calcium fluoride (CaF2) as a mineraliser, ground and blended with 5% anhydrite. The hydration mechanism of the resulting ACSA cement was investigated experimentally using quantitative X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry, as well as by thermodynamic modelling. During the first hours, mainly alite reacts. Ye'elimite starts to dissolve significantly after 2 d, as it is predominately present as inclusions within the alite matrix and thus reacts only after sufficient alite has dissolved to expose the ye'elimite domains within …
