Success Stories In Knowledge Management Systems, Leila Halawi, Richard Mccarthy, Janine Aronson

Leila A. Halawi

Historically, information systems have focused on capturing, storing, managing, and reporting explicit knowledge.
Organizations today recognize the need to integrate both explicit and tacit knowledge in formal information systems. Knowledge management continues to be a critical strategy for an organization to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage, and consequently succeed in today's knowledge-based economy. Knowledge management systems (KMS) are a class of information systems that manage, store and distribute knowledge. Knowledge management systems have proliferated in practice. In turn, theoretical research on knowledge management and knowledge management systems has proliferated. Knowledge management systems have emerged as powerful sources of competitive advantage. …

Increasing human populations and the continual change of the Earth’s climate has meant that food security is becoming an increasingly important issue. One of the main factors contributing to food security is the availability of water for agricultural purposes. Recently, a few models have been proposed for water management problems in agricultural contexts which aim to maximise crop yield (i.e., farm and regional profitability) while minimising the effect that this has on the environment. It is the exploration of the latter that is of the most interest given the above, and hence the subject of this paper. As a refinement …

Binary Central Stars Of Planetary Nebulae Discovered Through Photometric Variability. V. The Central Stars Of Hatr 7 And Eso 330-9, Todd Hillwig, David J. Frew, Nicole Reindl, Hannah Rotter, Andrew Webb, Steve Margheim Dec 2016

Binary Central Stars Of Planetary Nebulae Discovered Through Photometric Variability. V. The Central Stars Of Hatr 7 And Eso 330-9, Todd Hillwig, David J. Frew, Nicole Reindl, Hannah Rotter, Andrew Webb, Steve Margheim

Todd Hillwig

We find the central stars (CSs) of the planetary nebulae (PNe) HaTr7 and ESO330-9 to be close-binary systems. Both have orbital periods of less than half a day and contain an irradiated cool companion to the hot CS. We provide light curves, spectra, radial velocity curves, orbital periods, and binary modeling results for both systems. The binary modeling leads to system parameters, or ranges of allowed parameters for each system. We find that for the CS of HaTr7 we need to use limb-darkening values for the cool companion …

Irresistible Bargains: Navigating The Surveillance Society, Robert M. Pallitto Dec 2016

Irresistible Bargains: Navigating The Surveillance Society, Robert M. Pallitto

Robert M Pallitto

Agents in contemporary societies are faced continually with choices regarding engagement with technological artifacts. They can choose to engage or decline engagement after considering the costs and benefits in each case. However, certain aspects of the surveillance society may be irresistible in a number of ways, so that refusal to engage with them is not a realistic option. The proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), particularly as embedded in “smart city” initiatives, helps to make surveillance technologies potentially irresistible. After laying the conceptual groundwork for discussing irresistible bargains, this essay offers a two-part normative critique, focusing on the asymmetrical …

Using Raman Spectroscopy To Improve Hyperpolarized Noble Gas Production For Clinical Lung Imaging Techniques, Jonathan R. Birchall, Nicholas Whiting, Jason G. Skinner, Michael J. Barlow, Boyd M. Goodson Dec 2016

Using Raman Spectroscopy To Improve Hyperpolarized Noble Gas Production For Clinical Lung Imaging Techniques, Jonathan R. Birchall, Nicholas Whiting, Jason G. Skinner, Michael J. Barlow, Boyd M. Goodson

Nicholas Whiting

Spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP) can be used to “hyperpolarize” 129Xe for human lung MRI. SEOP involves transfer of angular momentum from light to an alkali metal (Rb) vapor, and then onto 129Xe nuclear spins during collisions; collisions between excited Rb and N2 ensure that incident optical energy is nonradiatively converted into heat. However, because variables that govern SEOP are temperature-dependent, the excess heat can complicate efforts to maximize spin polarization—particularly at high laser fluxes and xenon densities. Ultra-low frequency Raman spectroscopy may be used to perform in situ gas temperature measurements to investigate the interplay of energy thermalization and SEOP …

Towards A Home-Based Virtual Reality Game System To Promote Exercise, Ashish Amresh, Rahul Salla

Ashish Amresh

This paper presents the design and usability testing results for a home-based virtual reality game system that aims to promote exercise with the spin machine. The novelty of our approach lies in the design of the game mechanics that promote increased calorific output among the participants and the ease of setup with any commercially available Virtual Reality (VR) sensor. The paper describes the motivation behind the developed system, the design details of the games created to promote the use of the system and the results from a usability test conducted with 37 participants.

First-Order Modular Logic Programs And Their Conservative Extensions (Extended Abstract), Amelia Harrison, Yuliya Lierler Dec 2016

First-Order Modular Logic Programs And Their Conservative Extensions (Extended Abstract), Amelia Harrison, Yuliya Lierler

Yuliya Lierler

This paper introduces first-order modular logic programs, which  provide a way of viewing answer set  programs  as consisting of many independent, meaningful modules. We also present conservative extensions of such programs. This concept helps to identify strong relationships between modular programs as well as between traditional programs. For example, we illustrate how the notion of a conservative extension can be used to justify the common projection rewriting. This is a short version of a paper that appeared at the 32nd International Conference on Logic Programming.

Action Languages And Question Answering, Yuliya Lierler, Daniela Inclezan, Michael Gelfond

Yuliya Lierler

This paper describes a methodology for designing Question Answering  systems that utilize an action language ALM to allow inferences based on complex interactions of events described in texts. This methodology assumes the extension of the VERBNET lexicon with interpretable semantic annotations in ALM and specifies the use of several other NLP resources to produce ALM system descriptions for input discourses.

Greek New Testament For Data Analysis, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2016

Greek New Testament For Data Analysis, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

Updated: 18 December 2017
This Excel data file (compatible with Excel 2007 and later versions) is an extract of my working Greek New Testament database which I use for statistical and data analysis. It originated in the early 2000's from UBS3 data files in beta code I obtained from CCAT, and has since been evolving through countless changes and corrections. A flat-file table display such as Excel 2007+ is the best format suitable for Autofilter and VBA applications, without involving a more complex XML format. The file itself may be opened with Excel 2007 or later versions, or with the …

Penalized Nonparametric Scalar-On-Function Regression Via Principal Coordinates, Philip T. Reiss, David L. Miller, Pei-Shien Wu, Wen-Yu Hua Dec 2016

Penalized Nonparametric Scalar-On-Function Regression Via Principal Coordinates, Philip T. Reiss, David L. Miller, Pei-Shien Wu, Wen-Yu Hua

Philip T. Reiss

A number of classical approaches to nonparametric regression have recently been extended to the case of functional predictors. This paper introduces a new method of this type, which extends intermediate-rank penalized smoothing to scalar-on-function regression. The core idea is to regress the response on leading principal coordinates defined by a relevant distance among the functional predictors, while applying a ridge penalty. Our publicly available implementation, based on generalized additive modeling software, allows for fast optimal tuning parameter selection and for extensions to multiple functional predictors, exponential family-valued responses, and mixed-effects models. In an application to signature verification data, the proposed …

Robert W. Pattie Jr.

We have followed up on our previous measurements of upscattering of ultracold neutrons (UCN) from a series of gases by making measurements of total cross sections on the following gases hydrogen, ethane, methane, isobutene, n-butane, ethylene, water vapor, propane, neopentane, isopropyl alcohol, and 3 He. The values of these cross sections are important for estimating the loss rate of trapped neutrons due to residual gas and are relevant to neutron lifetime measurements using UCN. The effects of the UCN velocity and path-length distributions were accounted for in the analysis using a Monte Carlo transport code. Results are compared to our …

Regional Initiatives For Malaria Elimination: Building And Maintaining Partnerships, Andrew A. Lover, Kelly E. Harvard, Alistair E. Lindawson, Cara Smith Gueye, Rima Shretta, Roly Gosling, Richard Feachem Dec 2016

Regional Initiatives For Malaria Elimination: Building And Maintaining Partnerships, Andrew A. Lover, Kelly E. Harvard, Alistair E. Lindawson, Cara Smith Gueye, Rima Shretta, Roly Gosling, Richard Feachem

Andrew Lover

  • Country programs and international donors are increasingly focused on regional approaches to malaria elimination; regional initiatives have been established in southern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. Despite this growing attention, there is limited information and guidance on both key activities and organizational components of regional initiatives.
  • In a review conducted for this policy forum, common characteristics across existing regional initiatives emerged: building a region-specific evidence base, leveraging expertise and resources, shifting commodities or pooling procurement, developing data-sharing systems, mobilizing resources, promoting high-level accountability, and strengthening advocacy.
  • Regional initiatives share key structural elements: a strategic …

Malaria Risk Factors And Care-Seeking Behaviour Within The Private Sector Among High-Risk Populations In Vietnam: A Qualitative Study, Ingrid Chen, Huong Ngo Thi Thanh, Andrew A. Lover, Phung Thi Thao, Tang Viet Luu, Hoang Nghia Thang, Ngo Duc Thang, Josselyn Neukom, Adam Bennett Dec 2016

Malaria Risk Factors And Care-Seeking Behaviour Within The Private Sector Among High-Risk Populations In Vietnam: A Qualitative Study, Ingrid Chen, Huong Ngo Thi Thanh, Andrew A. Lover, Phung Thi Thao, Tang Viet Luu, Hoang Nghia Thang, Ngo Duc Thang, Josselyn Neukom, Adam Bennett

Andrew Lover

Background
Vietnam has successfully reduced malaria incidence by more than 90% over the past 10 years, and is now preparing for malaria elimination. However, the remaining malaria burden resides in individuals that are hardest to reach, in highly remote areas, where many malaria cases are treated through the informal private sector and are not reported to public health systems. This qualitative study aimed to contextualize and characterize the role of private providers, care-seeking behaviour of individuals at high risk of malaria, as well as risk factors that should be addressed through malaria elimination programmes in Vietnam.
Methods
Semi-structured qualitative interviews were …
