The Effects Of Bedding Directions On Abrasion Resistance In Travertine Rocks, Mehmedi̇ Vehbi̇ Gökçe Jan 2015

The Effects Of Bedding Directions On Abrasion Resistance In Travertine Rocks, Mehmedi̇ Vehbi̇ Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Travertine rocks are currently used in various architectural applications, cut perpendicular or parallel to bedding planes. Travertine stones used without enough attention paid to the cutting directions easily wear off in locations where pedestrian traffic is heavy and can cause some unexpected complications in practice. This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of cutting directions on the abrasion resistance of travertine stones. Travertine blocks were cut perpendicular and parallel to bedding planes, and their abrasion resistances were determined by means of the Böhme abrasion loss test. Travertine blocks were chosen from 6 different quarries whose products are currently in …

An Approach To Paleoclimatic Conditions For Devonian (Upper Lochkovian And Middle Givetian) Ironstone Formation, Nw Anatolian Carbonate Platform, İsmai̇l Ömer Yilmaz, Mehmet Cemal Göncüoğlu, Di̇lek Gülnur Demi̇ray, İbrahi̇m Gedi̇k

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Lower-middle Devonian iron-bearing successions were studied along 2 measured stratigraphic sections in the Çamdağ region of NW Anatolia. Ironstones in the upper part of the Fındıklı Formation in Kabalakdere are characterized by alternating red and green mudstones and sandstones at the bottom, followed by a series of dolomite, dolomitic limestone with oolitic ironstones, and chamositic mudstones at the top. Conodonts from these carbonates indicate the delta-pesavis zones of the late Lochkovian. The 12- to 45-m-thick Ferizli Formation unconformably overlies the Fındıklı Formation with a quartz-arenite succession at the bottom. The formation comprises alternating red, iron-rich limestones and dolomitic limestones, where …

Discovery Of Hiatus In Feixianguan Formation And Its Geological Implications, Sichuan Basin, Sw China, Yang Yu, Xiucheng Tan, Peiyuan Chen, Huiting Yang, Teng Ma, Jian Cao, Xiuju Jin

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The lower Triassic Feixianguan Formation of the Sichuan Basin is an important exploration target for marine natural gas in China. It is widely believed that a certain interval from Fei 1 to Fei 4 displays conformable contacts rather than long-term wide-ranging hiatus. However, 2 denudational interfaces on the top of Member Fei 1 and Fei 2 respectively were found in the present work, which relies on the delicate core observation of 4 cored wells in Puguang Gas Field, microscopic observations of microsamples in terms of thin sections, scanning electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence, and geochemical testing. Evidence indicates that on the …

Provenance, Diagenesis, Tectonic Setting, And Geochemistry Of Hawkesbury Sandstone (Middle Triassic), Southern Sydney Basin, Australia, Samir Mahmoud Zaid, Fahad Al Gahtani

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Hawkesbury Sandstone is an important groundwater reservoir in the southern part of the Sydney Basin, Australia. However, its diagenesis and provenance and its impact in reservoir quality are virtually unknown. The present study aims to reconstruct the parent rock assemblages of the Hawkesbury Sandstone, their tectonic provenance, and the physiographic conditions under which these sediments were deposited. Samples from the EAW 18a and EDEN 115 field representing the Middle Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone were studied using a combination of petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical techniques. The Hawkesbury Sandstone is yellowish brown in color, siliceous, and partly calcareous; it originated as sands …

Evidence Of An Active Glacier In The Munzur Mountains, Eastern Turkey, Ci̇han Bayrakdar, Zeynel Çilğin, Mehmet Fati̇h Döker, Ergi̇n Canpolat

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Munzur Mountains were subjected to extensive and repeated glaciations during the Pleistocene. The presence of an active glacier in the region was not verified until this study. Here, we used remote sensing methods to identify and locate the glaciers and verified the activity of the largest glacier in the field. We named this glacier the Şahintaşı Glacier and studied it using 3D ArcGIS spatial analyses overlaid on high-resolution Geographical Information Systems (GIS) satellite images. The most current version of LANDSAT 8 (acquired on 14.08.2013) supplied the remote sensing information. We used principal component analysis on the data. The precise …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eskişehir Fault Zone is one of the major neotectonic structures of Turkey, extending from İnegöl (Bursa) to Cihanbeyli (Konya). The fault zone presents a considerable seismic risk for the city of Eskişehir but the exact locations of active segments and the source of the major seismic event, the 1956 earthquake (M = 6.5) that occurred in the instrumental period (from 1900 to 2013), have been debated in recent literature. The structural data obtained from field studies indicate an approximately N60W-trending main strand of the right lateral strike-slip Eskişehir Fault Zone. This trend corresponds to the en echelon bends on …

Cosmological Models Filled With A Perfect Fluid Source In The F(R,T) Theory Of Gravity, Dnyaneshwar Dadaji Pawar, Yadao Solanke

Turkish Journal of Physics

We investigated the physical behavior of an LRS Bianchi type I cosmological model in the framework of the f(R,T) theory of gravity in the presence of a perfect fluid, where R is the Ricci scalar and T is the trace of the stress energy tensor of the matter. In order to obtain a deterministic solution of the field equations we assumed the special law of variation of the Hubble parameter proposed by Berman that yields the constant deceleration parameter. Some physical properties of the models are discussed.

Usage Of Attenuation Coefficients Of Some Tissue-Equivalent Materials, Ayşe Güneş Tanir, Fatma Serap Ketenci̇, Mustafa Hi̇cabi̇ Bölükdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Physics

The total attenuation coefficients of 11 biological targets against photon energies were plotted within the energy range 1-10 MeV. From these plots a possible equation describing the relationship between photon energy and the total attenuation coefficient was derived. The suggested equation is mu/ rho = 0.0696/ surd E. To test the validity of the equation and to compare the results of the total attenuation coefficients of 3 tissue-equivalent materials (bolus, rice grains, and boiled rice) that could not be determined before, they were determined experimentally by using X-rays produced at 6 MV and 18 MV. The results of the experiment …

Analysis And Simulation Of Semiconductor Laser Dynamics With Optoelectronic Delay Feedback, Varghese Bejoy, Sivasankaran Rajesh, Vadakkedath Madhom Nandakumaran Jan 2015

Analysis And Simulation Of Semiconductor Laser Dynamics With Optoelectronic Delay Feedback, Varghese Bejoy, Sivasankaran Rajesh, Vadakkedath Madhom Nandakumaran

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this work we investigate semiconductor laser dynamics with optoelectronic delay feedback, both analytically and numerically. Stability criteria are derived from the delay differential equations of the system. Stability curves are obtained in the feedback strength-delay parameter space. We show that delay has a role in determining the stability only for a range of feedback strength and this range can vary depending on other parameters. Effects of bias current and nonlinear gain reduction on the stability curves are shown in the analysis and numerically verified.

Adiabatic Loading Of Rotating Bosons Into 1d Optical Lattice, Shemi S. M. Soliman, Yehya Elsharkawy Jan 2015

Adiabatic Loading Of Rotating Bosons Into 1d Optical Lattice, Shemi S. M. Soliman, Yehya Elsharkawy

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this paper, the entropy-temperature curves are investigated for rotating boson gases in a 1D optical lattice with transverse harmonic confinement. Regimes at which the atomic sample can be significantly heated or cooled by adiabatically changing the lattice depth and the rotation rate are demonstrated. The suggested approach, which is the semiclassical approximation, includes the correction due to the finite size effect. The obtained results show that the entropy--temperature curves have a monotonically increasing nature for this system, in agreement with the standard thermodynamic arguments. For fixed temperature, entropy always increases with the increasing of the rotation rate or optical …

Survey Of Muon Stripping In The Muon-Catalyzed $D-D$ Fusion Cycle In Pure Deuterium, Seyed Mohammad Motevalli, Maedeh Mohammdapourfard

Turkish Journal of Physics

Muon-catalyzed fusion is a very efficient nuclear fusion method to which a wide variety of experimental and theoretical studies have been devoted in recent years. The mixtures of hydrogen isotopes are the most appropriate particles to do this kind of fusion. The efficiency of muon-catalyzed fusion in mixtures of pure deuterium is due to the abundance of this isotope as compared to other hydrogen isotopes. The most important issue of reducing the efficiency of the muon-catalyzed fusion chain in pure deuterium mixtures is the probability of muons sticking to the helium-3 particle produced after the $d-d$ nuclear fusion reaction. In …

Synthesis And Properties Of A Spinel Cathode Material For Lithium Ion Battery With Flat Potential Plateau, Ahmed Abdulrahman Ahmed Al-Tabbakh, Norlida Kamarulzaman, Aseel Al-Zubaidi

Turkish Journal of Physics

A potential cathode material for lithium ion battery was synthesised by combustion reaction. The thermal behaviour of the as-synthesised precursor was measured using a thermogravimetric analyser and the range of calcination temperature from 500 $^{\circ}$C to 800 $^{\circ}$C was determined. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that all calcined powders crystallised in the cubic spinel structure of the $Fd\bar{3}m$ space group. The particle size distributions and morphologies of the powders were obtained using a particle size analyser and scanning electron microscope. The effect of calcination temperature on the electrochemical performance was investigated using galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements. The potential profiles of charge and …

Symmetry And The Order Of Events In Time: The Thermodynamics Of Blackbodies Composed Of Positive Or Negative Masssymmetry And The Order Of Events In Time: The Thermodynamics Of Blackbodies Composed Of Positive Or Negative Mass, Randy Wayne

Turkish Journal of Physics

I have previously proposed a discrete symmetry called CPM (charge-parity-mass) symmetry that defines matter as having positive mass and antimatter as having negative mass-both being involved in processes that proceed forward in time. I have generalized the second law of thermodynamics to describe and predict the order of events in time that take place in reversible thermodynamic systems composed of positive or negative mass. Here I extend the CPM symmetry to irreversible thermo-optical radiation systems characterized by the Stefan-Boltzmann law, Planck's blackbody radiation law, and Einstein's law of specific heat. The laws of radiation analyzed in terms of CPM symmetry …

A van der Waals three body force rigid shell model (VTRSM) developed earlier for NaCl and CsCl structure was expanded by us for zinc blende structure (ZBS). This model includes the effect of three body interactions and van der Waals interactions in the rigid shell model where short-range interactions were considered up to the second neighbor. Our model thus developed was applied to study the phonon dispersion curves, Debye temperature variation, two phonon Raman/IR spectra, and anharmonic elastic properties of ZnS. Our results are in good agreement with the measured data wherever available.

Synthesis And Molecular Modeling Studies Of Naproxen-Based Acyl Hydrazone Derivatives, Tuğba Taşkin Tok, Özgün Özaşik, Deni̇z Sarigöl, Ayşe Uzgören Baran

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

A series of N-acylhydrazone derivatives (2a--2p) containing 6-methoxy-naphthalene and acylhydrazone moieties were synthesized in good yield using microwave irradiation and developed as potential COX-2 inhibitors. Furthermore, the interactions between COX-2 and the compounds were examined in detail by molecular modeling studies such as structure--activity relationship and molecular docking performed using Gaussian 09 and Discovery Studio 3.5. As a result, it was found that N-acylhydrazone compounds displayed a different mechanism than SC-558 as COX-2 inhibitor by binding to different active sites of the protein, COX-2. Compound 2c would be a good COX-2 inhibitor candidate for preclinical studies.

On Isophote Curves And Their Characterizations, Fati̇h Doğan, Yusuf Yayli

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

An isophote curve comprises a locus of the surface points whose normal vectors make a constant angle with a fixed vector. The main objective of this paper is to find the axis of an isophote curve via its Darboux frame and afterwards to give some characterizations about the isophote curve and its axis in Euclidean 3-space. Particularly, for isophote curves lying on a canal surface other characterizations are obtained.

$R$-Ideals In Commutative Rings, Rostam Mohamadian Jan 2015

$R$-Ideals In Commutative Rings, Rostam Mohamadian

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this article we introduce the concept of $r$-ideals in commutative rings (note: an ideal $I$ of a ring $R$ is called $r$-ideal, if $ab\in I$ and ${\rm Ann}(a)=(0)$ imply that $b\in I$ for each $a,b\in R$). We study and investigate the behavior of $r$-ideals and compare them with other classical ideals, such as prime and maximal ideals. We also show that some known ideals such as $z^\circ$-ideals are $r$-ideals. It is observed that if $I$ is an $r$-ideal, then so too is a minimal prime ideal of $I$. We naturally extend the celebrated results such as Cohen's theorem for …

Enhancing Sliding Mode Control With Proportional Feedback And Feedforward: An Experimental Investigation On Speed Sensorless Control Of Pm Dc Motor Drives, Mehmet Dal

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper investigates the enhancement of sliding mode control (SMC) with the combined use of feedforward torque compensation and proportional error feedback control. The proposed enhancement is adapted to the control of permanent magnet (PM) DC motor drives by synthesis of the equivalent control equation augmented as proportional feedback and feedforward terms. A novel sliding function, introduced by utilizing the estimated load torque and the estimated rotor current, is examined and compared with another known sliding function obtained by nonideal differentiation of the estimated rotor speed. The significance of the proposed enhancements to SMC consists of the elimination of disturbance, …
