Investigation Of Electron Transfer Reaction Between Diphenylbenzidine And Ascorbic Acid, Iftikhar Imam Naqvi, Abida Perveen

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The kinetics of the reduction of diphenylbenzidine by ascorbic acid were investigated in the pH range 3.5 to 5.0. Diphenylbenzidine was prepared by the oxidation of diphenylamine with cerium(IV) sulfate tetra hydrate. The order of the reaction with respect to each of the reactants, i.e ascorbic acid (ASC), diphenylbenzidine (DPB) and H^+ ,was found to be first. The following rate law is recommended: Rate = {k_1 [C_{12}H_{10}N_2C_{12}H_{10}] + k_2K [C_{12}H_{10}N_2C_{12}H_{10}][H^+]}[C_6H_8O_6] where k_1 and k_2 have the values of 2.0 \times 10^4 dm^3mol^{-1} s^{-1} and 6.58 \times 10^3 dm^3.mol^{-1}.s^{-1} , respectively. K is the protonation constant of DPB, having a value …

A New Approach Towards (\Pm)-4-Ipomeanol And Its 2-Furyl Regioisomer, Jurgen Krauss, Franz Bracher, Doris Unterreitmeier

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The cytotoxic furan derivative (\pm)-4-ipomeanol (1) and its regioisomer (8) were prepared in a new and efficient way starting from commercially available furan derivatives. In both cases the key step was a regioselective solvolysis of the terminal double bond with trifluoroacetic anhydride and boron trifluoride. The resulting compounds were tested in an agar diffusion assay against several bacteria and fungi, but did not show significant activity.

Electrode parameters, pH effect and interferences were also studied. The indium electrode based on 15C5 using DOPP as a plasticizer gave the best response for low levels of In^{3+} ions. The linear range for this electrode ranged from 3.8 x 10^{-5} to 5.0 x 10^{-2} M (with correlation coefficient r = 0.9997), the slope was …

Dirac Sextic Oscillator In The Constant Magnetic Field, Ramazan Koç, Mehmet Koca Jan 2005

Dirac Sextic Oscillator In The Constant Magnetic Field, Ramazan Koç, Mehmet Koca

Turkish Journal of Physics

We introduce a Dirac equation which reproduces the usual radial sextic oscillator potential in the non-relativistic limit. We determine its energy spectrum in the presence of the magnetic field. It is shown that the equation is solved in the context of quasi-exactly-solvable problems. The equation possesses hidden sl_2-algebra and the destroyed symmetry of the equation can be recovered for specific values of the magnetic field which leads to exact determination of the eigenvalues.

Standard Ubv Observations At The Çanakkale University Observatory (Çuo), Hi̇cran Bakiş, Volkan Bakiş, Osman Demi̇rcan, Edwin Budding

Turkish Journal of Physics

By using standard and comparison star observations carried out at different times of the year, at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Observatory, we obtained the atmospheric extinction coefficients at the observatory. We also obtained transformation coefficients and zero-point constants for the transformation to the standard Johnson UBV system, of observations in the local system carried out with the SSP5A photometer and T40 telescope. The transmission curves and the mean wavelengths of the UBV filters as measured in the laboratory appear not much different from those of the standard Johnson system and found inside the transmission curve of the standard mean atmosphere.

Some Physical Properties Of \Gamma Irradiated Ge_X(As_2te_3)_{100 - X} Chalcogenide System, Afaf Abdel-Aal, Bahiga Abdel-Hameed Mansour, Hoda Mohamed Eissa

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effect of \gamma -radiation on the electrical conductivity, switching, and optical properties of the chalcogenide amorphous system Ge_x(As_2Te_3)_{100 - x} (where x = 0,1,5,10 atm %) have been studied. The results show that the radiation causes a shift of the optical gap,as well as a change in the electrical activation energy and the threshold voltage. As the \gamma -doses increase, the values of the allowed indirect optical energy gap E_{opt} for the different compositions decreases and the tail energy width increases.

A Theoretical Study On Silicon And Iii-V Compound Nanotubes, Engi̇n Durgun, Sali̇m Çiraci

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this paper we present a theoretical study on single-wall silicon and III-V compound nanotubes. First principles plane wave calculations within density functional theory are used to predict energetics and electronic structures of armchair and zigzag nanotubes. The stability of tubular structures is further investigated at finite temperature by ab initio molecular dynamics calculations. Our results indicate that (n,0) zigzag and (n,n) armchair single-wall Si nanotubes are stable for n >= 6. Mechanically, the Si nanotubes are radially soft, however they are strong against axial deformations. Electronic analysis showed that zigzag nanotubes are metallic for n Keywords: silicon, nanotube, first …

Study Of Density Of Localized States In A-Se_{100 - X}Sb_X Films By Space Charge Limited Conduction Measurements, V. S. Kushwaha, Santosh Kumar, A. Kumar

Turkish Journal of Physics

The present paper reports dc conductivity measurements at high electric fields in vacuum evaporated a-Se_{1 - x}Sb_x (x = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06) thin films. At high fields (~ 10^4 V .cm^{-1}), current can be modelled by the theory of space charge-limited conduction in the case of uniform distribution of localised states in the mobility gap of these materials. The addition of Sb in Se results in an increase in the density of localised states.

Turkish Journal of Physics

Polypyrrole (PPy) was prepared by a chemical method by using oxidizing agents ferric chloride and potassium persulphate, both as films and pellets. The effect of various variables-such as aging of the films, film thickness, ratios of the reactants and type of the sample (film or disc)-on DC conductivity were investigated. The results from samples prepared with ferric chloride exhibited an increase in conductivity with increasing concentration of oxidizing agent to a certain ratio, above which a slight decrease occurs. Whereas in the case of using potassium persulphate as the oxidizing agent, a decrease in conductivity occurs with increasing its concentration. …

Unsteady Couette Flow With Heat Transfer Considering Ion-Slip, Hazem Ali Attia Jan 2005

Unsteady Couette Flow With Heat Transfer Considering Ion-Slip, Hazem Ali Attia

Turkish Journal of Physics

The unsteady Couette flow of an electrically conducting, viscous, incompressible fluid bounded by two parallel non-conducting porous plates is studied with heat transfer taking ion-slip into consideration. An external uniform magnetic field and a uniform suction and injection are applied perpendicular to the plates while the fluid motion is subjected to a constant pressure gradient. The two plates are kept at different but constant temperatures while the Joule and viscous dissipations are included in the energy equation. The effect of ion-slip an uniform suction and injection on both the velocity and temperature distributions is examined.

A Content-Based Fuzzy Image Database Based On The Fuzzy Artmap Architecture, M. Uysal, Fatoş Tünay Yarman Vural

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A major design issue in content-based image retrieval system is the selection of the feature set. This study attacks the problem of finding a discriminative feature for each class, which is optimal in some sense. Fuzzy ARTMAP architecture is used to find this discriminative feature set. For this purpose, initially, a large variety of features are extracted from the regions of the pre-segmented images. Then, the feature set of each object class is learned using the Fuzzy Art Map Architecture, by identifying the weights of each feature for each object class. In the querying phase, trained set of feature weights …

Commutative Quartic P-Galois Extensions Over A Field Of Characteristic Not 2, Atsushi Nakajima Jan 2005

Commutative Quartic P-Galois Extensions Over A Field Of Characteristic Not 2, Atsushi Nakajima

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In [2], K. Kishimoto introduced the notion of P-Galois extensions and gave some fundamental properties of these extensions. P-Galois extensions relate Hopf Galois extensions, and the author treated these topics in [5]. Moreover, the cubic P-Galois extensions over a field were completely determined in [6]. Continuing [5] and [6], we classify commutative quartic P-Galois extensions over a field of characteristic not 2.

On Banach Lattice Algebras, Ayşe Uyar

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this study, without using the assumption a^{-1} > 0, it is shown that E is lattice - and algebra - isometric isomorphic to the reals R whenever E is a Banach lattice f-algebra with unit e, e = 1, in which for every a > 0 the inverse a^{-1} exists. Subsequently, an alternative proof to a result of Huijsmans is given for Banach lattice algebras.

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork Jan 2005

Sigma-Delta Voltage To Frequency Converter With Phase Modulation Possibility, Milan Stork

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Voltage to frequency converter (VFC) is an oscillator whose frequency is linearly proportional to control voltage. There are two common VFC architectures: the current steering multivibrator and the charge-balance VFC. For higher linearity, the charge-balancing method is preferred. The charge balanced VFC may be made in asynchronous or synchronous (clocked) forms. The synchronous charge balanced VFC or "sigma delta" (\Sigma-\Delta) VFC is used when output pulses are synchronized to a clock. The charge balance VFC is more complex, more demanding in its supply voltage and current requirements, and more accurate. It is capable of 16 to18 bit linearity. In this …

Transformer Protection Using The Wavelet Transform, Okan Özgönenel, Güven Önbi̇lgi̇n, Çağri Kocaman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces a novel approach for power transformer protection algorithm. Power system signals such as current and voltage have traditionally been analysed by the Fast Fourier Transform. This paper aims to prove that the Wavelet Transform is a reliable and computationally efficient tool for distinguishing between the inrush currents and fault currents. The simulated results presented clearly show that the proposed technique for power transformer protection facilitates the accurate discrimination between magnetizing inrush and fault currents in transformer protection.

Soft Computing Methods In Microwave Active Device Modeling, Yavuz Cengi̇z, Fi̇li̇z Güneş, Mehmet Fati̇h Çağlar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this work, the signal and noise behaviors of a microwave transistor within its operation domain (CT,V_{DS}, I_{DS}, f) are modeled by the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) without using any information on the microwave circuit theory . A worked example is presented where the same data is employed for both models selected from the manufacturer's data sheets. Performances of the FLS and ANN models are compared and conclusions are drawn.

Impacts Of Distributed Generators On The Oscillatory Stability Of Interconnected Power Systems, İstemi̇han Genç, Ömer Usta Jan 2005

Impacts Of Distributed Generators On The Oscillatory Stability Of Interconnected Power Systems, İstemi̇han Genç, Ömer Usta

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Integration of distributed generation is continually and gradually affecting the stability of interconnected power systems. In this paper, the impacts of distributed synchronous generators on oscillatory stability are studied. In various parameter sub-spaces of interest, feasibility regions can be calculated to determine the conditions to sustain the stable operation of an interconnected power system. Through computations of the feasibility boundaries corresponding to Hopf bifurcations of electromechanical oscillatory modes, we determine the operating limits for a stable operation of the system under small and continual disturbances such as predictable changes in loading conditions of generators. Thus, with the case studies given …

Multilayer Capacitor Model Of The Earth's Upper Crust, Berk Üstündağ, Özcan Kalenderli̇, Haluk Eyi̇doğan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, an equivalent electric circuit model of Earth's upper crust is proposed to explain the behavior of measurement patterns acquired from network of the earthquake forecast project. A multi-layer capacitor model having active components that couples with the monopolar probe close to the surface is used to determine earthquake precursory patterns due to structural changes in time. Equivalent circuit model was developed for a) dilatency process that is assumed to be a stress weakening reason and b) external force source that increases shear stress over the fault until sudden decrement before the earthquake. A data acquisition system consisting …

Fault Tolerant Control With Re-Configuring Sliding-Mode Schemes, Ufuk Demi̇rci̇, Feza Kerestecioğlu Jan 2005

Fault Tolerant Control With Re-Configuring Sliding-Mode Schemes, Ufuk Demi̇rci̇, Feza Kerestecioğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a controller design method for linear MIMO systems is presented which a sliding mode controller is reconfigured in case of system faults. Faults are detected with the residual vector generated from a standard linear observer. Once a fault has been detected the fault distribution matrix can be obtained and used to update the corrective or equivalent control parts of the sliding mode controller. As a result, fault tolerant adaptive controllers keep the system performance within acceptable limits or at least avoids the system to wind-up.

Turbo Codes: The Issue Of Average Union Upper Bound Under Imperfect Channel State Information In Rayleigh Fading Channels, Erhan A. İnce, Syed Amjad Ali

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The potential of turbo codes to demonstrate excellent performance in the region of low signal to noise ratio is now a familiar fact. The idea of turbo codes was first introduced by Berrou and was based on the clever utilization of the existing decoding mechanism of BCJR with a change in the encoder by introducing feedback and an interleaver in the overall scheme. Since then, these powerful forward error correcting codes have attained a significant attention and have either replaced or have become a sturdy candidate for many applications in this era of modern communication systems. So far, a lot …

Two-Variable Scattering Formulas To Describe Some Classes Of Lossles Two-Ports With Mixed, Lumped Elements And Commensurate Stubs, Ahmet Sertbaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Using the semi-analytic method based on the construction of two-variable scattering functions, which describe lossless two-ports with two kinds of elements, for some classes of ladder networks formed with lumped elements and commensurate stubs, the explicit descriptive formulas are produced up to six mixed-elements. To exhibit the efficiency of the explicit descriptive equations in the design of the broadband microwave circuits, a single matching design problem (UHF antenna matching) is solved by using the obtained two-variable scattering formulas.
