A wide range of forages is currently being evaluated by farmers and researchers in seven countries in Southeast Asia. Broadly-adapted species have been identified for fodder banks, grazed systems, tree cropping, erosion control and improved fallows. The most promising accessions to date are Stylosanthes guianensis CIAT 184, Brachiaria decumbens cv Basilisk, Brachiaria humidicola cv Tully and CIAT 6133, CIAT 6780, Centrosema pubescens CIAT 15160 and Andropogon gayanus cv Kent and CIAT 621. Other forages that show promise are Paspalum atratum, Arachis pintoi, and Macroptilium gracile cv. Maldonado. Local seed supply and distribution systems are needed to ensure that …

Codariocalyx Gyroides- A New Forage Option For The Humid Tropics, B L. Maass, L H. Franco, G Ramirez, J E. Velásquez

The Southeast Asian shrub legume, Codariocalyx gyroides is adapted to acid, low-fertility soils with poor drainage. Data from 19 RIEPT (International Network for Evaluation of Tropical Pastures) trial sites conducted in the American humid and subhumid tropics were used to define the range of adaptation of C. gyroides. The results show that C. gyroides performs better under high rainfall conditions of the humid tropics with hardly any dry season, and it responds to soil fertility (Ca, P). Future research needs are identified. The release of a commercial cultivar in Colombia is being prepared.

Two trials on herbage productivity and aspects of herbage quality were conducted on a number of indigenous and exotic forage shrubs and browse plants. The first trial involved 13 species and the second 4 species. The two studies were carried out concurrently in one year. In the first study, it was found that the species which combined high herbage yield and good quality feed attributes were Cajanus cajan, Calliandra calothrysus, Flemingia macrophylla, Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala. The performance of six grass-white clover mixtures were evaluated in winter cold zone of Eastern Anatolia. In combination with white clover, ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) cocksfoot, (Dactylis glomerata L) and smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss) were used in double and triple plant mixtures. Average DM production ranged from 7.5 to 10 t/ha , with no significant differences observed among the mixed swards. DM production of all mixed swards significantly varied between cutting periods and years. Alfalfa grows wild in some parts of Korea, but specific information is lacking as to its agronomic characteristics, nutritive value and dry matter production potential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of wild alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) as a forage. Wild alfalfa and Vernal were field sown at Keongsan, Keongbuk in the spring of 1995. Emergence for Vernal was better than for wild alfalfa. It was observed that the flowering date of the wild alfalfa was delayed by 8 days. Legume herbage quality and quantity depend on genetic background to be able to sustain metabolic activity under increasingly harsh environmental conditions. Field experiments were carried out in Foggia, a southern Italian town (a typical Mediterranean location) on varieties and ecotypes of two perennial legume (sainfoin and sulla) mostly widespread in Mediterranean environments. The experiment compared irrigated and non-irrigated conditions and two different seed rates. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of agronomic factors on herbage production and the nutritive value of the forage. Cup-plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) is a perennial member of the Asteraceae family, native to mesic sites of the North American prairie. Two experiments were conducted to gain knowledge of the performance of cup-plant grown in monoculture as a managed, harvested crop. In the first experiment, three cup-plant ecotypes grown near East Troy, WI and harvested twice per season for 3 years yielded from 9 to 11 Mg ha-1 each season. There is considerable scope for improving the productivity and persistence of pasture systems, in the temperate low rainfall zones (< 550 mm annual rainfall) of Australia and New Zealand. Alternative pasture species, including leguminous browse plants, have potential to increase the diversity and stability of these pasture systems. The genus Dorycnium (canary clover), has previously been identified as containing a number of species with desirable forage and soil conservation characteristics. Preliminary investigations have indicated that at least two species, D. rectum and D. hirsutum, produce significant quantities of forage in the year of establishment and are palatable to sheep. Broadleaf birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) is a popular crosspollinated, perennial legume cultivated for pasture, or hay and silage production. It does not cause bloat and can be managed to reseed to maintain stands, but significant losses occur when stands decline from disease. Wild birdsfoot trefoil with underground rhizomes was discovered in Morocco. This paper describes research to: 1) compare the morphology and anatomy of rhizomes with aerial stems, 2) determine if rhizomes could be successfully transferred to domesticated germplasm, and 3) determine the inheritance of rhizomes. The genus Trifolium, which consists of about 230 species of annual and perennial legumes, has been divided into eight taxonomic sections. Approximately 50 species are native to western North American inter-mountain regions and the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. Prior to this research, about 30 of the Trifolium species from western North America were not represented in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). Three germplasm collection expeditions in 1994 and 1995 collected about 140 accessions encompassing at least 44 species, including at least 25 species not previously available in the NPGS. We present a new technique for mapping the potential occurrence of wild germplasm based in climate data and show its application to six important Stylosanthes species. The method can be used to develop hypotheses as to the distribution for purposes of collection and/or in situ conservation. It can also be used to investigate genetic diversity with a species. The DM production (DMP), chemical composition, and seed production of black oats (Avena strigosa Schreb.) and the yellow oat cultivars ‘UPF2’ , ‘UPF3’ and ‘UPF7’ (A. byzantina C. Kock.) were evaluated under two management systems: plants cut (60 days after sowing-DAS) and uncut for seed production. Oat genotypes were sown in 1993 and 1994. UPF7 was the least productive. No difference was detected (P > 0.05) in the cell wall composition of the genotypes. High values of CP (22.9%) and IVDMD (77.6%) were determined across all genotypes. In 1994, cutting at 60 DAS affected the seed production of the cultivars. …

The study was carried out on three annual Medicago species (M. polymorpha, M. aculeata and M. ciliaris) each represented by five populations. Cold tolerance of the accessions was tested using a laboratory chilling test on seedling growth and soluble protein content of acclimated and non-acclimated seedlings. Lots of 3-d-old seedlings were submitted to cold treatment for 48 and 96 hours. For each treatment, response was determined by measuring seedlings’ weight and height, and radicle length for both acclimated and non-acclimated seedling lots. Eight argentine land races of maize (1 to 8) were evaluated in a diallel mating scheme for ear, stover and total digestible dry matter yield. For the average of four environments, the crosses 1x2 and 1x4 do not show significant differences with the best check (Cargill Semiden 5) for total digestible dry matter yield. Using the Gardner and Eberhart diallel analysis only the sum of squares of cultivars for stover digestible dry matter yield was significant, suggesting that additive effects are very important in controlling this trait, while for ear digestible dry matter yield both additive and non-additive effects are …

Brachiaria is a grass genus of African origin. Some genotypes have shown good adaptation to poor, acid soils and now cover millions of hectares of pastures in tropical America. In an effort to increase diversity for selection, CIAT led collection expeditions to East Africa and later distributed this germplasm to collaborating institutions. Agronomical evaluation of a Brachiaria collection of broad genetic base was conducted at EMBRAPA/CNPGC with the objective of selecting potential new cultivars. Some 285 Ladino white clover genotypes selected from four ecotypes were multiplied clonally and evaluated in a replicated pot experiment over one year. Multivariate patterns of variation were depicted by principal component analysis performed on the correlation matrix of five morphophysiological traits, namely petiole length, central leaflet size, head production, number of florets per head and stolon density. Selection was based on high broad sense heritability values of all of these traits. The objective of this study was to assess the yield and chemical composition of perennial peanut (Arachis glabrata) at growth intervals of 30, 45, 45, 60, 75 and 90 days so as to recommend the best interval of cutting. The yield of dry matter increased from 3133 to 3804 kg ha-1 at cutting intervals of 30 and 60 days, respectively, after which it declined to 3445 kg ha-1 at 90 days . Germplasm managers at the Western Regional Plant Introduction Station (WRPIS) have focused on improving seed regeneration in forage and turf grass species through studies of diversity maintenance, using isozyme markers in annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and through studies of pollen isolation, using strains of dominant pubescent and recessive glabrous smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.). Because of its ability to survive on acidic and infertile soils, it has been introduced to southern Australia as a potential alternative or companion plant to serradella and subterranean clover. Two cultivars of Festuca arundinacea, one of temperate origin (El Palenque: PAL) with higher spring and summer growth and one of North African origin (Maris Kasba: MK) with higher winter growth, were compared under grazing during three years. They were grazed continuously, using a “put and take” system, by young steers and the swards maintained at equal heights, but which varied slightly between seasons. Molecular markers were used to investigate phylogenetic relationships among the 8 species of ryegrass (Lolium) and 11 species of fescue (Festuca). Nine sequences of non-coding chloroplastic or mitochondrial DNA were amplified through PCR, then digested by 20 restriction enzymes. Restriction sites data were used to draw an UPGMA tree. Breeding Reed Canarygrass As An Energy Or Fibre Crop By Using Local Collected Wild Populations, E Lindvall

Reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) has become interesting as an industrial crop in Sweden. The grass can be used as biofuel or fibre raw material for pulp production. New varieties have to be developed, with a quality different from forage varieties. High stem/ leaf-ratio, low content of ash and elements like silica, potassium and chlorine are important breeding goals. A Swedish project, aiming to evaluate local reed canarygrass populations, shows that there is some variation in these morphological and chemical characters which can be utilised in a breeding program.
