The Aransas-Wood Buffalo population of Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) migrates approximately 4000 km through the central Great Plains biannually, between their breeding and wintering grounds. Whooping Cranes depend on stopover sites to provide secure resting locations and the caloric resources necessary to complete their migration, such as the USFWS-designated critical habitat area in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) of Nebraska. This area includes braided river habitat characterized by low-elevation and submerged sandbars, which provide important roosting and foraging opportunities for migrating Whooping Cranes. We used long-range photography, videography, and behavioral scan sampling to document forage items consumed by Whooping …

Motivations To Participate In Hunting And Angling: A Comparison Among Preferred Activities And State Of Residence, Matthew P. Hinrichs, Mark P. Vrtiska, Mark Pegg, Christopher J. Chizinski Jan 2021

Motivations To Participate In Hunting And Angling: A Comparison Among Preferred Activities And State Of Residence, Matthew P. Hinrichs, Mark P. Vrtiska, Mark Pegg, Christopher J. Chizinski

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Motivations for hunting and fishing extend beyond harvesting game and include social, psychological, emotional, and physical benefits. We used data from a web-based questionnaire to compare relationships between preferred hunting or fishing activity types, state of residence, and motivations of hunters and anglers across the central United States (U.S.). Exploratory factor analysis yielded four motivation factors: nature, social, food, and challenge. Differences in terms of state were negligible across all motivation factors (η2p < .01), indicating similarity across states. Nature (η2p = .01) and social (η2p < .01) factors were the first and …

Developing Persulfate-Activator Soft Solid (Pass) As Slow Release Oxidant To Remediate Phenol-Contaminated Groundwater, Maneekarn Yoo-Iam, Tunlawit Satapanajaru, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Steve Comfort, Ann Kambhu Jan 2021

Developing Persulfate-Activator Soft Solid (Pass) As Slow Release Oxidant To Remediate Phenol-Contaminated Groundwater, Maneekarn Yoo-Iam, Tunlawit Satapanajaru, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Steve Comfort, Ann Kambhu

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The research objective was to develop a persulfate-activator soft solid (PASS) as a biodegradable slow-release oxidant to treat phenol-contaminated groundwater. PASS was prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) onto 1% (w/v) sodium alginate mixed with 500 mg L−1 sodium persulfate and 5 mg L−1 ferrous sulfate. The physical and chemical properties of PASS were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, the water content and swelling ratio. Various variables, including the ratio of AA/AM, pH, temperature and the type of groundwater cations affecting PS release, were …

Assessing Quantitative Modelling Practices, Metamodelling, And Capability Confidence Of Biology Undergraduate Students, Joseph Dauer, Robert Mayes, Kent Rittschof, Bryon Gallant

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Quantitative modelling plays an important role as biology increasingly deals with big data sets, relies on modelling to understand system dynamics, makes predictions about impacts of changes, and revises our understanding of system interactions. An assessment of quantitative modelling in biology was administered to students (n = 612) in undergraduate biology courses at two universities to provide a picture of student ability in quantitative reasoning within biology and to determine how capable those students felt about this ability. A Rasch analysis was used to construct linear measures and provide validity evidence for the assessment and to examine item statistics …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Early and early Middle Pleistocene glaciations in midcontinental USA are poorly understood relative to more recent Illinoian and Wisconsinan glaciations, largely because pre-Illinoian glacial landforms and deposits are eroded and buried. In this paper, we present a new interpretation of buried, pre-Illinoian glacial features along the Laurentide glacial margin in northeastern Nebraska using Airborne ElectroMagnetics (AEM) supplemented with borehole logs and 2m LiDAR elevation data. We detect and map large-scale (101–102 km) geological features using contrasts in electrical resistivity. The Laurentide glacial limit is marked by a continuous (>120 km) contrast between conductive (<15 Ω-m), clayey tills and resistive (>40 Ω-m) sandy sediments. Several …
