Preliminary Estimate Of The Underflow Across The South Dakota-Nebraska State Line In The Niobrara River And Ponca Creek Drainage Basins, E. C. Reed, C. F. Keech

Conservation and Survey Division

The purpose of this paper is to estimate the amount of ground water flowing across the South Dakota-Nebraska State line within the Niobrara River basin, including the Ponca Creek basin. The study was made at the request of the Niobrara River Compact Commission. The estimates fiven in the paper are preliminary and subject to revision.

Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell Sep 1957

Industrial Wastes: Bio-Assays For Control Of Industrial Effluents, Croswell Henderson, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Waste effluents from many industries are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. The control or treatment of these wastes for safe release into receiving waters presents a problem of consider able magnitude.

Much effort has been expended by some industries to solve this problem, primarily through chemical analysis for possible toxic components and then generally by a search of the literature to find out how toxic a particular component may be. Unfortunately, this approach has not been successful, nor can it be expected to be productive of satisfactory answers.

The Enzymatic Synthesis And Disproportionation Of Galactosyl Oligosaccharides, Carl L. Tipton Jun 1957

The Enzymatic Synthesis And Disproportionation Of Galactosyl Oligosaccharides, Carl L. Tipton

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

It was the purpose of this experiment to obtain unequivocal evidence for the suggested structures of the new oligosaccharides and to obtain evidence in support of the transgalactosylation mechanism of action of the enzyme studied.

Five of the galactosyl oligosaccharides produced during the hydrolysis of lactose by an enzyme prepared from Saccharomyces fragilis have been isolated in chromatographically pure form. The three having the highest chromatographic mobilities have been shown to be 3-0-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucose, 6-0-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucose and 6-0-β-D-galactopyranosyl-D-galactose.The positions of the glycosidic linkages in these compounds were determined by use of the lead tetra-acetate oxidation procedure. These three disaccharides have been characterized by measurement …

A Differential Counting Rate Meter For Low Counting Rates, James J. Schmidt Jun 1957

A Differential Counting Rate Meter For Low Counting Rates, James J. Schmidt

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

A counting rate meter was constructed after a circuit suggested by Harald Trefall, with a power supply after Elmore. The instrument was tested and proved quite stable after operating for several weeks. The response of the instrument was calculated and the experimental results verified the calculations. Methods of calibration and operation of the instrument were developed to obtain the full benefit of its design.A set of calibration curves was obtained from the counting rate meter and a suggestion for their use in interpreting the output was made.

The research resulted in the construction of an instrument with the following specifications:

Maximum Counting Rates: …

CH2
Recent mechanism studies have created interest in the question of the spin multiplicity in the molecular fragment CH2. The present note concerns a detailed quantum-mechanical calculation, using the LCAO-MO approximation, undertaken to determine if numerical calculations indicate any preference of one state over the other.

Thing We Need To Do, Mel Steen Jan 1957

Thing We Need To Do, Mel Steen

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

Nebraska has great need to preserve and develop her wildlife and recreational resources. We have reached that paint in our history when we can no longer rely on yesterday's measures in this field. For our own social and economic good, we must now do things we have hereto considered unnecessary.

We face problems that a few years ago were unknown. The complexity and rapid growth of modern civilization, a civilization that has reached heights never before attained by man, create new and growing problems on the wildlife and recreational front. We have great need to preserve that which we have, …

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner Jan 1957

Medial Pleistocene Fossil Vertebrate Localities In Nebraska, C. Bertrand Schultz, Lloyd G. Tanner

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The accurate geologic dating of Pleistocene vertebrate localities which occur outside the glaciated regions has always been difficult. Several new fossil localities in Nebraska now provide data for a better understanding of the paleoecology and faunal evidence of the medial Pleistocene of the Great Plains region.

A fossil quarry, containing the remains of both vertebrates and invertebrates, has been discovered in south-central Nebraska (11/2 miles south and west of Angus in Nuckolls County). The fossils are preserved in Sappa silts in a lime concentration zone (C horizon) of a Yarmouth paleosol. The calcium carbonate appears to have been responsible for …

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard Jan 1957

Nebraska Deer, William Bailey Jr., George Schildman, Phillip Agee, C. G. Pritchard

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

IN COMMON with the experience of most states, Nebraska's deer herds were reduced to a very low level by excessive harvests in our early history. Most American big-game animals were overharvested in the early history of this nation because of commercialization. Buffalo were killed for their hides, deer for their meat. This slaughter continued as long as the hunter (or poacher) could sell his take at a profit. Modem game management and public opinion reversed this trend. Deer are on the way back all over America, and in some states the protection-complex was so strong that deer were restored to …

Biological Indices Of Water Pollution, With Special Reference To Fish Populations, Peter Doudoroff, Charles E. Warren

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

A number of investigators have very recently published discussions having to do with biological indices and biological measures of water pollution (1) (2) (7) (13) (14) (15) (16) (26) (27) (28) (29) (30) (36) (38). Fjerdingstad (12) has discussed some of the pertinent European literature. The fundamental concepts presented by these authors are not original, for the idea that aquatic organisms can be useful "indicators" of environmental conditions, and particularly of the degree of pollution of water with organic wastes, has a long history (12). Because of certain novel features and the relatively wide scope of the studies, and the …
