Use Of A Simple Blowing Device To Facilitate Inspection Of Wheat For Internal Infestation, Max Milner, E. P. Farrell, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Enforcement of sanitary practices in the commercial handling of wheat, particularly with reference to insect infestation, requires a method of inspection of wheat for internal or hidden insect infestation which is reliable, yet rapid enough for routine use. A number of inspection methods have been developed for this purpose, and a review has been published (1) of those proposed up to two years ago. A rigorous evaluation of several of these techniques has been made recently (2).
The rapid inspection method suggested to the grain trade by the Food and Drug Administration (2), based on the results of an extensive …

Pre-North Horn Orogeny In Gunnison Plateau, Utah, Benjamin H. Burma, Clyde T. Hardy
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
This paper presents evidence for the post-Price River and pre-North Horn orogeny, in the Gunnison Plateau of central Utah (Fig. 1), and shows its magnitude. The first definite evidence of such a movement was found by C. T. Hardy in 1951, although it had been suggested previously, without definite evidence, by Gilliland (1949, 1951).

Application Of The Polaroid-Land Process To Radiographic Inspection Of Wheat, Max Milner, Robert Katz, M. R. Lee, W. B. Pyle
Robert Katz Publications
At a time when the technique of X-ray inspection of grains for internal insect infestation, announced almost two years ago, appears to have gained considerable currency in industries handling and processing grain, there exists the general feeling that these industries would be more receptive to any technique which would even further simplify and expedite the radiographic inspection process. To this end Kansas State College and the Picker X-Ray Corporation have engaged in a cooperative study relating to the application of the Picker-Polaroid photographic process to the determination of internal infestation in grain. This process is based on the principle of …
Stream Pollution, Ruth Patrick
Stream Pollution, Ruth Patrick
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
This paper discusses the various ways in which aquatic organisms may be of use in solving problems associated with waste disposal. Since many state and federal laws set forth that nothing may be discharged that is deleterious to aquatic life, the most expedient way to determine the effect of an effluent is to study the aquatic organisms themselves.
In every river that has not been adversely affected by pollution there is a great variety of aquatic life. These organisms do not represent a great mass of living things, but rather they are organized into an intricately balance systems, often referred …

A Survey Of Farm-Game Habitat Restoration Programs In Fifteen States, William H. Marshall
A Survey Of Farm-Game Habitat Restoration Programs In Fifteen States, William H. Marshall
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
For at least twenty years the thinking of wildlife managers has been directed toward the importance of habitat in producing surplus game populations for hunting. The decline or disappearance of game populations - often over considerable areas - following changes in habitat brought about by agricultural, urban, or industrial developments demonstrates clearly the effects of the elimination of desirable habitat. Suitable habitat is basic to the survival of wildlife. Many field observations and experiences, as well as specific data from research, validate this conclusion. Where a harvestable surplus of game cannot be maintained because of changes made by man in …
Aerial Survey Township Areas, Willford L. Miller
Aerial Survey Township Areas, Willford L. Miller
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
In the year 1946, two townships of 36 square miles each were selected for experimental work in aerial censusing. The primary objective was to devise a technique for obtaining complete counts of upland game birds on limited areas during the winter months.
The aerial survey proved to be very satisfactory when snow conditions are right. All available cover must be well filled with snow, with very few bare spots in fields or other parts of the area. The birds tend to congregate on such bare places where it is very difficult to see them from the plane.
In 1951 a …

The Birds Of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada, J. Dewey Soper

Riding Mountain National Park is located in southwestern Manitoba within easy reach of important centres of population. From park headquarters at Wasagaming, it is only 140 miles southeast to Winnipeg, 57 miles south to Brandon, 35 miles north to Dauphin, and 102 miles to the International Boundary. Most of the surrounding country is devoted to agriculture.
The total park area approximates 1,148 square miles. Except for restricted tourist areas, it remains in a primitive condition, with unspoiled forests, prairies, streams, and lakes.
Up to the time the area was set aside as a park in 1929, comparatively little was known …

Measuring Waterfowl Habitat- Population Changes From Aerial Photos, Harvey W. Miller
Measuring Waterfowl Habitat- Population Changes From Aerial Photos, Harvey W. Miller
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts
A survey was conducted in 1953 to determine the feasibility of using aerial photography to measure the trends in available waterfowl habitat in the Nebraska Sandhills. This pilot survey included 96 one-square-mile sections systematically distributed over the area to give a 0.49 percent sampling rate.
The basic waterfo\o1l habitat types apparent on the aerial photos of these sections were identified and measured with a planimeter and map measure. These ascertained totals were then projected to obtain the estimated total of each habitat type in the study area.
A statistical analysis of the survey revealed that it would be necessary to …
