Ekeland's Variational Principle has been a key result used in various areas of analysis such as fixed point analysis, optimization, and optimal control theory. In this paper, the application of Ekeland's Variational Principle to Caristi's Fixed Point Theorem, Clarke's Fixed Point Theorem, and Takahashi's Minimization theorem is the focus. In addition, Ekeland produced a version of the classical Pontryagin Mini- mum Principle where his variational principle can be applied. Nakwai is a fossiliferous region in the Turkana Basin of northwestern Kenya. Until recently the only ages for the Nakwai formation were based on biostratigraphic correlation with Losodok; a late Oligocene site located to the north of Nakwai. The new 40Ar/39Ar ages in this study range from 23 Ma to 15 Ma and constrain the upper portions of the Nakwai section to the early Miocene. These ages make it the only securely dated fossil locality in the region that represents the earliest Miocene; all of the other early Miocene fossil localities date back to ~20 Ma or younger. Actuators determine the performance of robotic systems at the most intimate of levels. As a result, much work has been done to assess the performance of different actuator systems. However, biomimetics has not previously been utilized as a pretext for tuning a series elastic actuator system with the purpose of designing an empirical testing platform. This dissertation is composed of three papers that apply geologic mapping, whole rock geochemical and isotopic analysis, and mineral chemistry to describe two large, long-lived (~6 million years), and compositionally heterogeneous volcanic fields and posit sources of the rock types present in each. These fields are the McCullough Range in southern Nevada, which was a locus of volcanic activity from ~19 - 12 Ma and the Black Rock Desert volcanic field in west-central Utah, which began forming at ~6 Ma and is still active today, with the most recent eruption occurring ~720 years ago.

The reaction of bidentate aniline oligomers with pentavalent technetium has been investigated previously through the reaction of (n-Bu4N)TcOCl4 with o-phenylenediamine (PDA). The initial studies found that PDA reacted in a 1 to 2 molar ratio with pentavalent technetium in in ethanol. This study was expanded by the examination of a second aniline derivatives, 2-aminophenol (AMP)) and two thiobenzene derivatives (2-mercaptophenol (MP) and thiosalicylic acid (TSA)) to evaluate the kinetic formation of these complexes with pentavalent technetium. Inviscid flow theory governs the bulk motion of a gas at some distance away from the walls (i.e. outside the boundary layer). That is to say, there are no viscous forces in the bulk flow, which is modeled using the Euler equations. The Euler equations are simply the Navier-Stokes equations with zero viscosity terms. An ideal inviscid fluid, when brought into contact with a surface or wall, would naturally slip right past it since the fluid has no viscosity. The 144 Zone is an oxidized, breccia-hosted, disseminated gold deposit that formed along the contact between Early Cambrian Carrara Formation limestone and overlying Bonanza King Formation dolomite within the Bare Mountain range in southern Nevada. Gold mineralization occurs within a breccia body that contains a variety of breccia types. Research goals of this project included classifying clay, oxide and other minerals as well as breccia types to identify the habits of gold mineralization and the minerals associated with gold. Lithium-Rich Antiperovskites (LiRAPs) have been shown to possess relatively high ionic conductivity at room temperature, and become superionic conductors at elevated temperatures. These materials generally have a stoichiometry Li3BX, where B is a doubly deficient anion, and X is a monovalent anion. Ideally they belong to the high symmetry space group Pm-3m where lithium atoms occupy octahedral corners, B anions occupy octahedral centers, and X anions occupy the interstitial centers between the octahedra. The electric energy generated by solar panels declines due to dust particulates, bird deposits, water spots, and other contaminants that inhibit sunlight absorption and promote light scattering. As part of our research, we use cameras to capture images of solar panels, and analyze the images to detect the amount of scattered light. The more scattered light there is, the less light there is to penetrate the solar panel glass and reach the part of the panel that converts incident light to electric energy; therefore, less energy is generated. A red-black tree is a type of self-balancing binary search tree. Some wait-free algorithms have been proposed for concurrently accessing and modifying a red-black tree from multiple threads in shared memory systems. Most algorithms presented utilize the concept of a "window", and are entirely top-down implementations. Top-down algorithms like these have to operate on large portions of the tree, and operations on nodes that would otherwise not overlap at all still have to compete with and help one another.

Classical mathematics is a form of mathematics that has a large range of application; however, its application has boundaries. In this paper, I show that Sperber and Wilson’s concept of relevance can demarcate classical mathematics’ range of applicability by demarcating classical logic’s range of applicability. In June, the Environmental Protection Agency proposed important new limits on carbon dioxide emissions from existing U.S. power plants. The new regulation is the centerpiece of the Obama Administration’s climate policy. If the controversial rule is finalized as planned next year, it will cover about a third of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. This lecture will explain the legal, environmental, and economic issues posed by the rule and highlight the important role for states in implementing it. The lecture will also review the implications and options for achieving the emissions target the EPA set for Nevada.

We implement and test a core-collapse Type II SN feedback that is physically motivated and produces good agreement with observations in galaxy formation simulations. The model includes both kinetic and thermal feedback, allowing wind particles to receive a velocity kick that mimics galactic winds and distributes mass and metallicity to the interstellar and intergalactic medium. We also include a phenomenological stellar feedback to study a possible enhancement of the efficiency of the SN-II feedback by creating lower-density ambient gas medium of the stellar populations by distribution of thermal energy. The GEANT4-based GATE is a unique and powerful Monte Carlo (MC) platform, which provides a single code library allowing the simulation of specific medical physics applications, e.g. PET, SPECT, CT, radiotherapy, and hadron therapy. However, this rigorous yet flexible platform is used only sparingly in the clinic due to its lengthy calculation time. By accessing the powerful computational resources of a cloud computing environment, GATE's runtime can be significantly reduced to clinically feasible levels without the sizable investment of a local high performance cluster. We present a critical review of the existing algorithms for constructing polygonal shapes. We present a new approach calledinward dentingfor constructing simple polygons. Today, quagga mussel specific research is still lacking and the physicochemical characteristics of aquatic systems required by quagga mussels to successfully establish is not fully understood. Heavily populated metropolitan areas located in cooling-dominated climates, as are found in the Desert Southwest, pose a challenge to electrical utilities that service these areas. During the late afternoons of the summer months, residents of these metropolitan areas require larger than normal amounts of power to run their homes' air conditioning systems, at significant expense to the utilities. In the study reported here, interior temperature and power consumption data, accumulated over the course of a year and a half from seven houses within a Las Vegas neighborhood, are used to develop a predictive black-box statistical model for residential thermal transience. …

A variety of exploration methods including geologic mapping, trace- and major-level geochemical analyses, fluid inclusion petrography, remote sensing, and SWIR clay spectroscopy were used to investigate the potential for porphyry Cu-Mo mineralization at the Wikieup prospect, in the southern Hualapai Mountains of northwestern Arizona. Aspects of the Mineral Park mine were used as an analogue to guide exploration due to the proximity and similar geology of the area.

The Hualapai Mountains are a series of northwest-trending Precambrian gneisses, schists, granitoids and amphibolites that have been cut by younger intrusive rocks. Within the Wikieup study area, the intrusive rocks include aplite …

According to Traveler opinion and perception survey of 2005, 107.4 million Americans use walking as regular mode of travel, which amounts to 51% of American population. In 2009, 4092 pedestrian fatalities have been reported nationwide with a fatality rate of 1.33 which totals 59,000 crashes. Also, pedestrians are over represented in crash data by accounting more than 12% of fatalities but on 10.9% of trips. This dissertation is comprised of three studies focused on martian phosphate availability, with an introductory chapter introducing and linking the three studies. Chapter two is on the subject of merrillite synthesis. Merrillite is an extraterrestrial Ca-phosphate mineral similar to the mineral whitlockite and is found as a dominant primary phosphate mineral in martian meteorites. The chapter includes methods of whitlockite and merrillite synthesis as well as a detailed characterization of the produced minerals and a mechanism by which charge balance can be maintained when merrillite is synthesized through dehydrogenation of whitlockite.

The Funeral Mountains metamorphic core complex (FMMCC) in Death Valley, California exposes middle to lower crustal rocks of the Sevier-Laramide orogen in the footwall of the Miocene Boundary Canyon detachment. The structurally deepest rocks in the FMMCC are exposed in Monarch Canyon, where the Meso- to Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks record upper amphibolite facies metamorphism with migmatites developed at the deepest levels. Distributed ductile deformation and stratigraphically-localized high-strain zones, termed intracore shear zones, are responsible for attenuation and local stratigraphic omission during top-northwest non-coaxial deformation. Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Platinum(Ii) And Platinum(Iv) Complexes Containing 4,4′--Disubstituted--2,2′--Bipyridine Ligands For The Treatment Of Cancer, Van Vo

Three series of platinum(II) and platinum(IV) complexes containing 4,4′-disubstituted-2,2′-bipyridine ligands have been synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The MTS cell proliferation assay was used to examine the in vitro anti-proliferative activities of these complexes in various human breast, lung, and prostate cancer cells. The cell's response to the complexes varies between different cell lines; however, the low EC50 values determined from the MTS data indicate that several of the complexes are much more potent than cisplatin.
