Understanding Disk Substructures With 3d Self-Consistent Thermodynamics, Shangjia Zhang
Understanding Disk Substructures With 3d Self-Consistent Thermodynamics, Shangjia Zhang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Protoplanetary disks are birthplaces of planets. The past decade witnessed a great advance- ment in disk observations by Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and extreme adaptive optics (ExAOs). Hundreds of disks have been observed at high angular resolutions and revealed rich substructures (e.g., gaps/rings) at midplane and atmosphere, at least part of which are per- turbed by planets. Deep understanding of disk physics has a great potential to unveil more young planets from substructures and distinguish those that are not caused by planets. I worked on con- straining young planet populations using planet-disk interaction simulations and substructures and self-consistent treatment …
Redirection Of Current In A Dense Plasma Focus, Rocky Gonzalez
Redirection Of Current In A Dense Plasma Focus, Rocky Gonzalez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Mission Support & Test Services (MSTS) reports that significant amounts of energy needed for generating high energy neutrons is lost within a Dense Plasma Focus between its pinch-end of the anode stalk and at its base near the insulating sleeve. It is their mission and the goal of this research effort to both experimentally and theoretically study current redirection in a DPF during and after pinch dynamics. It is hypothesized that current redirection, due to restrike, behind the dynamic sheath of a dense plasma focus will result in a measurable change in the magnetic field along the longitudinal axis …
Lake Mead: A Living Museum, Marley Salveter
Lake Mead: A Living Museum, Marley Salveter
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Lake Mead, the largest man-made water project in the nation and a prolific source of electricity, irrigation, and recreation for much of the western population, is currently experiencing a drastic transformation. Amid the ongoing water crisis parching the west, the once overflowing reservoir is consistently shrinking, descending into depths historically uncharted. While serving as a bleak demonstration of climate change’s effects, the body of water is simultaneously assuming an alternative role that may be less apparent to the public. As water levels decline, Lake Mead is actively metamorphosing into a “Living Museum”, by gradually unveiling previously submerged artifacts. As a result, …
Experiment Development And Validation Of A Granular Jamming Robotic Gripper, Jacob R. Dowd
Experiment Development And Validation Of A Granular Jamming Robotic Gripper, Jacob R. Dowd
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
A granular jamming gripper (GJG) is widely known as a Universal Gripper because of the wide range of objects that it can grasp and the simplicity of control, design, and manufacturing. Despite multitude of research improving the GJG, here, we focus on the base version of the GJG and attempt to glean the range of objects that it may reliably grasp. Despite the limited range of objects, which were a sphere, rectangular prism, and cylinder, we gleaned geometric properties as it relates to successful and unsuccessful grasping. This was based on the two types of testing: push and pull testing …
An Examination Of The Teaching And Learning Of Resonance In General Chemistry I And Organic Chemistry I Using Variation Theory, Sabrina Barakat
An Examination Of The Teaching And Learning Of Resonance In General Chemistry I And Organic Chemistry I Using Variation Theory, Sabrina Barakat
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Resonance is a fundamental chemistry concept first introduced to students in General Chemistry I, reintroduced in Organic Chemistry I, and then utilized throughout other higher-level chemistry courses. A molecule or ion can be said to exhibit resonance when it can be represented by two or more chemical structures (i.e., Lewis structures) that differ only in their arrangement of electrons. In other words, resonance represents the electronic structure of a molecule or ion when a single Lewis structure does not adequately depict the true distribution of electrons. The molecule or ion is best represented as a combination of all of the …
Assessing The Potential For Magmatic Sulfides Within Southwestern Laurentia Large Igneous Province, Thomas J. Boes
Assessing The Potential For Magmatic Sulfides Within Southwestern Laurentia Large Igneous Province, Thomas J. Boes
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The ~1.1 Ga magmatism of the Southwestern Laurentia Large Igneous Province (SWLLIP) generated a series of mafic-ultramafic sheets, sills, and dikes emplaced within Mesoproterozoic sedimentary units and older crystalline basement rock throughout the southwest United States and northern Mexico. This large igneous province (LIP) event remains enigmatic in identifying the processes that generated this magmatism. In addition, potential links to the contemporaneous magmatism of North America's magmatic Ni-Cu-platinum group element (PGE) mineralized Mid-Continent Rift (MCR) LIP to the northeast of the SWLLIP remain unclear. The contemporaneous 1.1 Ga MCR LIP event hosts economically viable magmatic sulfide deposits in the Duluth …

Investigating Controls On Temporal And Spatial Variation Of Dissolved Uranium At Springs In Horn Creek Drainage, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, Usa, Collin Davidson
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Groundwater is a critical resource in the Grand Canyon, providing water to local communities, millions of annual visitors, and ecosystems. One major concern for this critical resource is the potential for uranium contamination in conjunction with uranium mining efforts. Upper Horn Bedrock Spring (UHB) in the Horn Creek drainage of the Grand Canyon sits below the oldest uranium mine in the region, Orphan Lode mine. UHB spring contains the highest concentration of dissolved uranium in the region, eclipsing the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) set by the USEPA by an order of magnitude on average. This research and recent collaboration with …

In advanced photonics, there is a growing interest in piezochromic luminescent materials that exhibit multicolor switching, driven by their potential applications in optical recording, memory, and sensors. Here, the piezochromic behavior of 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium tetrachloroferrate (Py-FeCl4) under high pressures from 0 to 9 GPa is reported. The observed multicolor changing properties of Py-FeCl4 (yellow–orange–red–maroon–black) are found to be fully reversible upon decompression to ambient conditions. The mechanism of Py-FeCl4 piezochromism is investigated via Raman, infrared, and UV–vis spectroscopy combined with powder X-ray Diffraction. The absence of structural phase transitions as well as the abrupt shifts of bandgap …
A Brief Early History Of The Unlv Department Of Geoscience, Matthew S. Lachniet
A Brief Early History Of The Unlv Department Of Geoscience, Matthew S. Lachniet
Geoscience Faculty Research
This project represents four years of part-time research and investigation. It started as something simple, a need for a spreadsheet for me, as a new Department Chair in January of 2020, to assemble the tenure and promotion timelines of existing faculty based on their employment starting dates. It then expanded to document every Geoscience faculty member, which revealed so many interesting stories along the way. Once it began it was hard to stop, with the research taking on a mind of its own as it meandered down the historical archive of the Department. And why stop with people? Buildings? Fair …

Developing A Remote Gamma-Ray Spectra Collection System (Rgscs) By Coupling A High Purity Germanium (Hpge) Detector With A Cosmicguard Background Reduction Device, Zaijing Sun, Krishnakumar Divakar Nangeelil, Haven Searcy
Health Physics & Diagnostic Sciences Faculty Research
Despite being widely used for high-resolution spectral analysis and quantifying low activity in natural samples, the operations and data analysis of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detectors are seldom fully automated due to the excessive costs associated with commercially available automatic sample changing systems. This paper introduces the design and implementation of a cost-effective, customized remote gamma-ray spectra collection system centered around the HPGe detector coupled to a cosmic-ray veto background reduction device. The HPGe detector system, equipped with a Lynx DSA, is seamlessly integrated with an economically viable automatic sample changer. This sample vial changer is controlled by a …
Fluid Flow, Mineralization And Deformation In An Oceanic Detachment Fault: Microtextural, Geochemical And Isotopic Evidence From Pyrite At 13°30′N On The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Andrew J. Martin, John W. Jamieson, Sven Petersen, Mostafa Fayek, Javier Escartin
Geoscience Faculty Research
Hydrothermal fluids in ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems associated with oceanic detachment faults can be more oxidizing compared to mafic-hosted vent sites. These fluids form a mineral assemblage of pyrite, magnetite and hematite. At 13°30′N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, chlorite-quartz breccias recovered from an exposed fault scarp contain pyrite, with abundant magnetite and hematite, indicating that the redox of the fluids was variable. In primary micron-scale zonations in pyrite, Ni, Co, and Se have a decoupled relationship, recording fluctuations in the chemical composition and temperature of hydrothermal fluid as the grains grew. Secondary zonations that erase and overprint primary zonations are limited …
The Behemoth Of The Last Ice Age: The Evolutionary Saga Of The Columbian Mammoth In North America, Nathaniel Valentine
The Behemoth Of The Last Ice Age: The Evolutionary Saga Of The Columbian Mammoth In North America, Nathaniel Valentine
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
The Columbian’s mammoth evolutionary history can be traced back to the origin of life and its evolutionary lineage can be tracked down by examining select species over geologic time. I conducted a literature review with multiple scientific journals to identify key transitional species that trace their lineage to the Columbian mammoth. Transitional species were selected from the Precambrian and the various periods of the Phanerozoic which exhibited vertebrate-like body structures and behaviors. Evidence suggests that early vertebrate-like animals were present by the Cambrian period. Mammal evolution would continue in the Mesozoic era and radiate in the Cenozoic era. The Columbian …

Zagamiite, Caal2si3.5o11, The Hexagonal High-Pressure Cas Phase With Dominant Si, As A Mineral From Mars, Chi Ma, Oliver Tschauner, John R. Beckett, Eran Greenberg, Vitali B. Prakapenka
Geoscience Faculty Research
Within the Ca-Al-silicate system, dense, layered hexagonal phases occur at high temperatures and pressures between 20 and 23 GPa. They have been observed both in nature and in experiments. In this study, we describe the endmember with a dominant sixfold coordinated Si as a mineral zagamiite (IMA 2015-022a). This new mineral identified in Martian meteorites has a general formula of (Ca,Na)(Al,Fe,Mg)2(Si,Al,□)4O11, thus defining CaAl2Si3.5O11 as a previously unknown endmember of the hexagonal CAS phases. Zagamiite assumes space group P63/mmc with a unit cell of a = 5.403(2) Å, c = 12.77(3) Å, V = 322.9(11) Å3, and Z = 2. …

Synthesis Of Novel Disulfide Triazole Organophosphate Containing Fire Retardants, Parsa Asaei, Jun Yong Kang
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Fire Retardants (FR) play a pivotal role in reducing smoke plume generation in wildland fires, which coincides with one of NSF EPSCoR’s HDRFS project objectives: investigating smoke plume dynamics. With the San Antonio Statement from 2010 banning halogenated FRs, there has been a push in research towards safer and better alternatives. The synthesis of a novel disulfide triazole organophosphate fire retardant (DSTP) would aid in NSF EPSCoR’s HDRFS research as a greener and better alternative. Therefore, our research aimed to i) develop a novel FR that harnesses the synergistic effects of phosphate-, disulfide-, and triazole-functionality that can be applied to …

The purpose of my research was to investigate the effects that different canopy covers have on desert cities microclimates and how the City of Las Vegas can implement the best techniques to reduce temperatures in the hottest parts of town. I collected data on the different temperatures in two separate parts of the city (East Las Vegas, Midtown UNLV area) in one-hour intervals during two and three in the afternoon and surveyed four different areas on its tree canopy coverage. I also analyzed scientific peer reviewed studies which helped me see what other arid cities, like Phoenix, AZ, have done …
Third-Order Harmonic Generation In Few-Layer Graphene, Nicholas T. Pereira, Timothy Chung, Joshua O. Island
Third-Order Harmonic Generation In Few-Layer Graphene, Nicholas T. Pereira, Timothy Chung, Joshua O. Island
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Optical harmonic generation is a phenomena that occurs in nonlinear materials and can be used to study the properties of those materials. For example, the nonlinear response of layered, two-dimensional (2D) materials can be used to characterize flake thickness, lattice and stacking symmetries, and crystal strain. Here, we study third harmonic generation (THG) in graphene and few-layer graphite as a precursor to investigating nonlinear optical properties of other 2D materials. We present a custom scanning setup for optical harmonic generation and present our results on few-layer flakes. These results provide a solid basis for future measurements of other new 2D …

Analysis Of Triton Cg 110 Foaming Characteristics For Use As A Potential Fire Suppressant, Addison Cobb, Jeremy Cho
Undergraduate Research Symposium Lightning Talks
Background: Per-FluoroAlkyls (PFAs) are incredibly stable molecules which do not biodegrade. These chemicals have been linked with a series of health issues and environmental problems.
Problem: PFAs have been identified in most drinking water supplies in the United States. Large Amounts of this is due to Aqueous Fire-Fighting Foams (AFFF’s), which contain PFAs, seeping into the groundwater supply.
Solution: While little can be done about PFAs currently in groundwater supplies, replacing PFA-based AFFFs with newer Eco-AFFFs can halt AFFF contamination, and maintain firefighting suppression.

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The theoretical predictions and results from the (La,Y)Hx ternary hydride solution provided evidence toward phase stability at comparatively lower pressures, as consequence the (Yb,Lu)Hx and (Tm,Lu)Hx ternary hydrides are studied here with pressures up to 25 GPa in the diamond anvil cell. The onset of an unknown feature in the XRD pattern coincides with crystallographic plane distortions in the tetragonal lattice of ytterbium hydride at their laser-heated interface, possibly driven by a solid solution of Lu-Yb. Findings in collected Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns in an Ar environment suggest potential stability of the FCC and high-temperature HCP …

An Evaluation Of Lead Concentration In Commercially Available Tiles, Daidre N. Gamboa
An Evaluation Of Lead Concentration In Commercially Available Tiles, Daidre N. Gamboa
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Workers in the manufacturing and construction industries are at risk of lead exposure in projects that involve removal or installation of tiles, and other individuals exposed to lead, including children may also be at risk. The concern with lead in tiles is thought to be related to the glazing process or the country where the tile was produced. Multiple regulations are in place in the U.S. to protect people from lead exposure, including through surface coatings or painted surfaces. But these regulations do not cover glazed tiles. This study examined whether there are differences in lead concentration in (1) tiles …

Travel time is an important concept in various intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications. The concept is used in a wide array of applications, such as system planning, system performance, and optimization. Reducing the time required to travel between different points on a network is an important goal. Benefits include reducing time wasted in traveling, and keeping travelers satisfied. Thus, studying and reducing travel time in ITS is beneficial in different applications.
The classic density-based Lighthill Whitman Richards (LWR) equation for modeling traffic flow is the starting point in this dissertation. A more recent travel time dynamics function built on top …
Examining Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among The Nevada African American Population Using The Social-Ecological Model, Katelyn Faulk
Examining Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among The Nevada African American Population Using The Social-Ecological Model, Katelyn Faulk
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In Nevada, COVID-19 vaccines have been widely available to the general population since March 2021; however, even with the wide availability of these vaccines only 40% of the African American population in Nevada has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of May 2023. This is problematic as it has been shown that the African American population is disproportionately affected by COVID-19 with higher rates of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths when compared to other races or ethnicities. Through the literature, it has also been well documented that African Americans may experience hesitancy toward these vaccinations for a multitude of reasons including …

Interaction Of Technetium (Iv) With Dibutyl Phosphate In N-Dodecane, Jonathan George
Interaction Of Technetium (Iv) With Dibutyl Phosphate In N-Dodecane, Jonathan George
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
During the reprocessing of nuclear fuel, the degradation of tributylphosphate (TBP) occurs as a result of radiolytic and thermal processes. These processes lead to the formation of minor amounts of dibutyl phosphate (HDBP). However, the presence of DBP poses a challenge in the partitioning of uranium (U), plutonium (Pu), and technetium (Tc) due to its chelating effects. The chelation of these elements by HDBP can interfere with their intended separation and purification, thereby impacting the efficiency and effectiveness of the reprocessing process. In this study, X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) spectroscopy is employed to investigate the speciation of Tc following …
