The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15 ∶ 00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17 ∶ 00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p astro > 0.5 . Examining the activity patterns of wildlife is an important aspect of understanding the ecology of a species and may be especially important for species of conservation concern. We used remotely triggered cameras to describe the daily and seasonal activity patterns and examine ecological factors that influence the activity of the Amargosa Vole (Microtus californicus scirpensis), a California endemic listed federally and by the state as Endangered, and is a marsh habitatspecialist in the Mojave Desert. We found that vole activity was greatest during crepuscular periods, followed by nocturnal and diurnal periods. We saw strong seasonal effects, with the highest activity …

Recently, the problem of multitasking scheduling has raised a lot of interest in the service industries. Hall et al. (Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2016) proposed a shared processing multitasking scheduling model which allows a team to continue to work on the primary tasks while processing the routinely scheduled activities as they occur. With a team being modeled as a single machine, the processing sharing of the machine is achieved by allocating a fraction of the processing capacity to routine jobs and the remaining fraction, which we denote as sharing ratio, to the primary jobs. Utilizing computer vision and the latest technological advancements, in this study, we developed a honey bee monitoring system that aims to enhance our understanding of Colony Collapse Disorder, honey bee behavior, population decline, and overall hive health. The system is positioned at the hive entrance providing real-time data, enabling beekeepers to closely monitor the hive's activity and health through an account-based website. Reformations to developmental mathematics aim to remove barriers for students entering higher education. Challenges like costly multi-course sequences and high failure rates prohibit students’ access to college-level math courses and prevent degree or certification completion. Understanding factors that foster student success is critical to increase student success. This study focuses on studentsattitudes towards mathematics, utilizing the novice-expert continuum through Code et al.’s Mathematical Attitude and Perceptions Survey (MAPS) instrument. Student expertise scores, including all MAPS dimensions and specific dimension scores, were assigned. Global temperature is increasing due to anthropogenic activities and the effects of elevated temperature on DNA lesions are not well documented in marine organisms. The American oyster (Crassostrea virginica, an edible and commercially important marine mollusk) is an ideal shellfish species to study oxidative DNA lesions during heat stress. This work evaluates the development of electrochemical processes for the oxidative degradation of persistent organic chemicals in waste waters, specifically the oxidation of cyanuric acid in the presence of NaCl at Cu/GO cathodes and Ti anodes. The experiment used a graphene oxide doped copper mesh cathode to examine different concentrations of cyanuric acid (30 mg/L, 40 mg/L, and 50 mg/L) and various concentrations of NaCl electrolyte (0.007mol/L, 0.03mol/L, 0.07mol/L, 0.1mol/L, and 0.2mol/L). Three dimensional (3D) piezoelectric zinc stannate (ZnSnO3) nanoweb arrays are synthesized using a combination of treatment methods deposited in PDMS thin films for electrochemical analysis of its piezoelectric response. Advantages of hydrothermal, molten salt, and solvothermal synthesis methods were leveraged to facilitate several chemical and surface engineering techniques. The combination of these treatments reduce the size of zinc stannate to approximately ~40nm-80nm weblike networks, much smaller than previously reported ZnSnO3 sub-micro cubes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis reveal a mesoporous protonated tristannate (H2Sn3O7) nanoweb template with connecting wirelike strands having diameters ranging from 12-27nm across and …

We illustrate a method to prove the unimodality of Gaussian polynomials ${N+m \brack m}$ for $m = 5$ and $6$, building upon Dr. Brandt Kronholm's work, which proved unimodality for $m = 2,3,$ and $4$. Our approach involves viewing coefficients $p(n,m,N)$ of Gaussian polynomials $N+m \brack m$ based on how far away $n$ is from the central coefficient $p(\lfloor\frac{mN}{2}\rfloor,m,N)$ and then creating generating functions for those coefficients. We then take the difference of neighboring generating functions and change those generating functions into quasipolynomials to verify that their coefficients are non-negative. Single-celled microbial eukaryotes inhabit deep-sea hydrothermal vent environments and play critical ecological roles in the vent-associated microbial food web. 18S rRNA amplicon sequencing of diffuse venting fluids from four geographically- and geochemically-distinct hydrothermal vent fields was applied to investigate community diversity patterns among protistan assemblages. Federated learning (FL) is a distributed learning process that uses a trusted aggregation server to allow multiple parties (or clients) to collaboratively train a machine learning model without having them share their private data. Recent research, however, has demonstrated the effectiveness of inference and poisoning attacks on FL. Mitigating both attacks simultaneously is very challenging. State-of-the-art solutions have proposed the use of poisoning defenses with Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) and/or Differential Privacy (DP). We introduce discrete and p-adic continuous versions of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system on the one-dimensional p-adic unit ball. We provide criteria for the existence of Turing patterns. We present extensive simulations of some of these systems. The simulations show that the Turing patterns are traveling waves in the p-adic unit ball.

The effect of the pre-growth temperature of bacterial cultures on their subsequent survival kinetics in fresh-cut produce during refrigerated storage was investigated in this study. Three-strain cocktails of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica, cultured at different growth temperatures (4, 21, and 37 °C) were inoculated on fresh-cut mixed salad and on individual produce in the mixed salad. The inoculated samples were stored at 4 °C and 80 ± 2% relative humidity (RH) for up to 72 h and the growth, survival, or death kinetics were determined at regular intervals. We show via both analytical calculation and numerical simulation that the optimal cross-correlation statistic (OS) for stochastic gravitational-wave-background (GWB) searches using data from pulsar timing arrays follows a generalized chi-squared (GX2) distribution—i.e., a linear combination of chi-squared distributions with coefficients given by the eigenvalues of the quadratic form defining the statistic. This observation is particularly important for calculating the frequentist statistical significance of a possible GWB detection, which depends on the exact form of the distribution of the OS signal-to-noise ratio ρˆ ≡ Aˆ 2 gw=σ0 in the absence of GW-induced cross correlations (i.e., the null distribution). Bullying may inflict harm or distress on the targeted youth including physical, psychological, social, or educational harm. Fractional-order partial differential equations have gained significant attention due to their wide range of applications in various fields. This paper employed a novel technique for solving nonlinear multidimensional fractional differential equations by means of a modified version of the Bernstein polynomials called the Bhatti-fractional polynomials basis set. The method involved approximating the desired solution and treated the resulting equation as a matrix equation. All fractional derivatives are considered in the Caputo sense. The resulting operational matrix was inverted, and the desired solution was obtained.
