A New Integrable Two-Component System With Cubic Nonlinearity, Junfeng Song, Changzheng Qu, Zhijun Qiao
A New Integrable Two-Component System With Cubic Nonlinearity, Junfeng Song, Changzheng Qu, Zhijun Qiao
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, a new integrable two-component system, mt=[m(uxvx−uv+uvx−uxv)]x,nt=[n(uxvx−uv+uvx−uxv)]x, where m=u−uxx and n=v−vxx, is proposed. Our system is a generalized version of the integrable system mt=[m(u2x−u2)]x, which was shown having cusped solution (cuspon) and W/M-shape soliton solutions by Qiao [J. Math. Phys. 47, 112701 (2006). The new system is proven integrable not only in the sense of Lax-pair but also in the sense of geometry, namely, it describes pseudospherical surfaces. Accordingly, infinitely many conservation laws are derived through recursion relations. Furthermore, exact solutions such as cuspons and W/M-shape solitons are also obtained.

Systematics Of Black Hole Binary Inspiral Kicks And The Slowness Approximation, Richard H. Price, Gaurav Khanna, Scott A. Hughes
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
During the inspiral and merger of black holes, the interaction of gravitational wave multipoles carries linear momentum away, thereby providing an astrophysically important recoil, or “kick” to the system and to the final black hole remnant. It has been found that linear momentum during the last stage (quasinormal ringing) of the collapse tends to provide an “antikick” that in some cases cancels almost all the kick from the earlier (quasicircular inspiral) emission. We show here that this cancellation is not due to peculiarities of gravitational waves, black holes, or interacting multipoles, but simply to the fact that the rotating flux …

We search for the signature of an isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background in pulsar timing observations using a frequency-domain correlation technique. These observations, which span roughly 12yr, were obtained with the 64-m Parkes radio telescope augmented by public domain observations from the Arecibo Observatory. A wide range of signal processing issues unique to pulsar timing and not previously presented in the literature are discussed. These include the effects of quadratic removal, irregular sampling and variable errors which exacerbate the spectral leakage inherent in estimating the steep red spectrum of the gravitational-wave background. These observations are found to be consistent with the …

Ab Initio Description Of Nonlinear Dynamics Of Coupled Microdisk Resonators With Application To Self-Trapping Dynamics, Hamidreza Ramezani, Tsampikos Kottos, V. Shuvayev, L. Deych
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
An ab initio approach is used to describe the time evolution of the amplitudes of whispering gallery modes in a system of coupled microdisk resonators with Kerr nonlinearity. It is shown that this system demonstrates a transition between Josephson-like nonlinear oscillations and self-trapping behavior. Manifestation of this transition in the dynamics of radiative losses is studied.

Extensive Reproductive Disruption, Ovarian Masculinization And Aromatase Suppression In Atlantic Croaker In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Hypoxic Zone, Peter Thomas, Md. Saydur Rahman
School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
The long-term impacts on marine ecosystems of the recent dramatic worldwide increase in the incidence of coastal hypoxia are unknown. Here, we show widespread reproductive disruption in Atlantic croakers collected from hypoxic sites approximately 120 km apart in the extensive northern Gulf of Mexico continental shelf hypoxic zone. Gonadal growth and gamete production were impaired in croakers from hypoxic sites compared with fish from reference normoxic sites east of the Mississippi River Delta. Male germ cells were detected in approximately 19 per cent of croaker ovaries collected in the hypoxic region, but were absent in ovaries from normoxic sites. In …

K-Hyponormality Of Powers Of Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Mayra O. Martinez
K-Hyponormality Of Powers Of Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Mayra O. Martinez
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In mathematics, weighted shifts, also known as shift operators or translation operators, are examples of linear operators. Single and multivariable weighted shifts have played an important role in the study of (joint) k-hyponormality to LPCS. They have also played a significant role in the study of cyclicity and reflexivity, in the study of C*-algebras generated by multiplication operators on Bergman spaces, as fertile ground to test new hypotheses, and as canonical models for theories of dilation and positivity. We will first consider the hyponormality of powers of commuting multivariable weighted shifts. Specifically, if we let W(α,β) := (T1, T2) denote …

Soliton Solutions Of Ultradiscrete Integrable Systems, Wei Yin
Soliton Solutions Of Ultradiscrete Integrable Systems, Wei Yin
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In recent years, ultradiscrete integrable systems, in which both independent and dependent variables are discretized, have attracted much attention. In this thesis, we show how to obtain all line soliton solutions of (2+1)-dimensional ultradiscrete soliton systems from determinant solutions of discrete soliton systems by taking an ultradiscrete limit. Taking an ultradiscrete limit of determinant solutions with non-negativity, we obtain Casorati determinant-like solutions. Starting from Grammian (Gram-type determinant), we obtain another expression of τ-functions, which leads to a perturbed form after the expansion of Grammian. These two different forms are essentially equivalent, i.e., it is possible to transform a form into …
Partition A 3-Colorable Graph Into A Small Bipartite Subgraph And A Large Independent Set, Qing Wang
Partition A 3-Colorable Graph Into A Small Bipartite Subgraph And A Large Independent Set, Qing Wang
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Exact algorithms have made a little progress for the 3-coloring problem: improved from to since 1976. The best exact algorithm for the 3-coloring problem is by Beigel and Eppstein, and its analysis is very complicated. We study the parameterized 3-coloring problem: partitioning a 3-colorable graph into a bipartite subgraph and an independent set. Taking the size of the bipartite subgraph as the parameter k, we propose the first parameter algorithm of complexity . Our algorithm can solve the 3-coloring problem faster than the best exact algorithm for graphs with k ≤ 0.527n where n is the graph size. Our study …

Synthesis And Characterization Of 4,4-Prime-Distyrylbiphenyl And Its Applications In Organic Field Effect Transistors, Nestor A. Santos Jr.
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
4,4’-distyrylbiphenyl (DSBP), an ambipolar small molecule with electroluminescent properties, was synthesized following two synthetic protocols. Accordingly, biphenyl was bromomethylated using a mixture of paraformaldehyde and hydrogen bromide in 20% to 60% isolated yields. Bromomethylated biphenyl was then reacted with triphenyl phosphine, or with triethyl phosphate to yield the corresponding triphenyl phosphonium bromide or triethyl phosphonate, respectively. DSBP was synthesized by reaction of the triphenyl phosphonium bromide or triethyl phosphonate with freshly distilled benzaldehyde according to the Wittig, or Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons protocols. DSBP from the Wittig reaction resulted in a mixture of cis-trans isomers, while the product from the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction yielded …

Duffing-Van Der Pol-Type Nonlinear Oscillator System, Jing Cui
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this thesis, we are concerned with the nonlinear Duffing–van der Pol–type oscillator system by means of the Lie symmetry reduction method. This system has physical relevance as a simple model in certain flow-induced structural vibration problems, which includes the van der Pol oscillator and the damped Duffing oscillator etc as particular cases. By applying the Lie symmetry analysis, we find two nontrivial infinitesimal generators, and use them to construct canonical variables. Through the inverse analysis, some dynamical properties of the nonlinear system under certain parametric conditions are presented. Comparison with the existing results by the Prelle– Singer procedure is …

Distributed Semantic Web Data Management In Hbase And Mysql Cluster, Craig M. Franke
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Various computing and data resources on the Web are being enhanced with machine-interpretable semantic descriptions to facilitate better search, discovery and integration. This interconnected metadata constitutes the Semantic Web, whose volume can potentially grow the scale of the Web. Efficient management of Semantic Web data, expressed using the W3C's Resource Description Framework (RDF), is crucial for supporting new data-intensive, semantics-enabled applications. In this work, we study and compare two approaches to distributed RDF data management based on emerging cloud computing technologies and traditional relational database clustering technologies. In particular, we design distributed RDF data storage and querying schemes for HBase …

We report the discovery of the 20.7ms binary pulsar J1952+2630, made using the distributed computing project Einstein@Home in Pulsar ALFA survey observations with the Arecibo telescope. Follow-up observations with the Arecibo telescope confirm the binary nature of the system. We obtain a circular orbital solution with an orbital period of 9.4hr, a projected orbital radius of 2.8lt-s, and a mass function of f = 0.15 M ⊙ by analysis of spin period measurements. No evidence of orbital eccentricity is apparent; we set a 2σ upper limit e ≲ 1.7 × 10 -3 . The orbital parameters suggest a massive white …
Pulsar Timing Sensitivity To Very-Low-Frequency Gravitational Waves, Fredrick A. Jenet, J. W. Armstrong, Massimo Tinto
Pulsar Timing Sensitivity To Very-Low-Frequency Gravitational Waves, Fredrick A. Jenet, J. W. Armstrong, Massimo Tinto
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
We compute the sensitivity, constrained by instrumental, propagation, and other fundamental noises, of pulsar timing to very-low-frequency gravitational waves (GWs). Reaching predicted GW signal strengths will require suppression of time-of-arrival fluctuations caused by interstellar plasma turbulence and a reduction of white rms timing noise to 100ns. Assuming negligible intrinsic pulsar rotational noise, perfect time transfer from time standard to observatory, and stable pulse profiles, the resulting single-pulsar signal-to-noise ratio=1 sensitivity is limited by terrestrial time standards at hrms∼2×10-16[f/(1cycle/year)]-1/2 for f<3×10-8Hz, where f is the Fourier frequency and a bandwidth of 1 cycle/(10 years) is assumed. Since this sensitivity is comparable to predicted GW signal levels, a reliable detection will require substantial signal-to-noise ratio improvement via pulsar timing array. © 2011 American Physical Society.

When Is Hyponormality For 2-Variable Weighted Shifts Invariant Under Powers?, Raul E. Curto, Jasang Yoon
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Abstract. For 2-variable weighted shifts W(α,β) ≡ (T1, T2) we study the invariance of (joint) khyponormality under the action (h, ℓ) 7→ W (h,ℓ) (α,β) := (T h 1 , T ℓ 2 ) (h, ℓ ≥ 1). We show that for every k ≥ 1 there exists W(α,β) such that W (h,ℓ) (α,β) is k-hyponormal (all h ≥ 2, ℓ ≥ 1) but W(α,β) is not k-hyponormal. On the positive side, for a class of 2-variable weighted shifts with tensor core we find a computable necessary condition for invariance. Next, we exhibit a large nontrivial class for which hyponormality …

Fabrication Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) (Pvdf) Nanofibers Containing Nickel Nanoparticles As Future Energy Server Materials, Faheem A. Sheikh, Travis Cantu, Javier Macossay-Torres, Hern Kim
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
In the present study, we introduce Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers containing nickel (Ni) nanoparticles (NPs) as a result of an electrospinning. Typically, a colloidal solution consisting of PVDF/Ni NPs was prepared to produce nanofibers embedded with solid NPs by electrospinning process. The resultant nanostructures were studied by SEM analyses, which confirmed well oriented nanofibers and good dispersion of Ni NPs over them. The XRD results demonstrated well crystalline feature of PVDF and Ni in the obtained nanostructures. Physiochemical aspects of prepared nano-structures were characterized for TEM which confirmed nanofibers were welloriented and had good dispersion of Ni NPs. Furthermore, the …

Constraining The Coalescence Rate Of Supermassive Black-Hole Binaries Using Pulsar Timing, Z. L. Wen, F. A. Jenet, D. Yardley, G. B. Hobbs, R. N. Manchester
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
Pulsar timing observations are used to place constraints on the rate of coalescence of supermassive black-hole (SMBH) binaries as a function of mass and redshift. In contrast to the indirect constraints obtained from other techniques, pulsar timing observations provide a direct constraint on the black-hole merger rate. This is possible since pulsar timing is sensitive to the gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by these sources in the final stages of their evolution. We find that upper bounds calculated from the recently published Parkes Pulsar Timing Array data are just above theoretical predictions for redshifts below 10. In the future, with improved …

We also define a nesting representation of D to be a set of NP-pairs S such that each degree in D contains a representative NP-pair in S and the degree structure of D is reflected by …
An Empirical Ubv Ri Jhk Color-Temperature Calibration For Stars, Guy Worthey, Hyun Chul Lee
An Empirical Ubv Ri Jhk Color-Temperature Calibration For Stars, Guy Worthey, Hyun Chul Lee
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations
A collection of Johnson/Cousins photometry for stars with known [Fe/H] is used to generate color-color relations that include the abundance dependence. Literature temperature and bolometric correction (BC) dependences are attached to the color relations. The JHK colors are transformed to the Bessell & Brett homogenized system. The main result of this work is the tabulation of seven colors and the V-band BC as a function of T eff, log g, and [Fe/H] for -1.06 < V - K < 10.2 and an accompanying interpolation program. Improvements to the present calibration would involve filling photometry gaps, obtaining more accurate and on-system photometry, knowing better log g and [Fe/H] values, improving the statistics for data-impoverished groups of stars such as metal-poor K dwarfs, applying small tweaks in the processing pipeline, and obtaining better empirical temperature and BC relations, especially for supergiants and M stars. A way to estimate dust extinction from M dwarf colors is pointed out. © 2011. The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved.

We investigated the influence of elevated CO2 and O3 on soil N cycling within the soybean growing season and across soil environments (i.e., rhizosphere and bulk soil) at the Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment (SoyFACE) experiment in Illinois, USA. Elevated O3 decreased soil mineral N likely through a reduction in plant material input and increased denitrification, which was evidenced by the greater abundance of the denitrifier gene nosZ. Elevated CO2 did not alter the parameters evaluated and both elevated CO2 and O3 showed no interactive effects on nitrifier and denitrifier abundance, nor on total and mineral N concentrations. These results …

The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasinormal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational-wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two colocated Hanford gravitational-wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational-wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a pulsar timing glitch. …

In this paper mathematical modeling and computation of channel flow over small discrete structures are carried out under some reasonable conditions. A mathematical model for such a flow problem, which is based on a relevant system of partial differential equations and Fourier analysis, is studied using perturbation and nonlinear stability methods, and the resulting flow solutions over two types of discrete structures are computed under both stable and unstable conditions. It was found, in particular, that for a subcritical domain with the Reynolds number R slightly less than its critical value Rc, which is defined as the value below which …

We investigate the power of the Wang tile self-assembly model at temperature 1, a threshold value that permits attachment between any two tiles that share even a single bond. When restricted to deterministic assembly in the plane, no temperature 1 assembly system has been shown to build a shape with a tile complexity smaller than the diameter of the shape. In contrast, we show that temperature 1 self-assembly in 3 dimensions, even when growth is restricted to at most 1 step into the third dimension, is capable of simulating a large class of temperature 2 systems, in turn permitting the …

A simple and high-yielding procedure has been developed to synthesize disubstituted imidalozes using phenyl glyoxal monohydrate, ammonium acetate and aldehydes. This synthetic protocol allows the preparation of a variety of 2,4 (s)-disubstituted imidalozes without using any catalyst, expensive or sensitive reagents. A corresponding 2-aroyl-4(s) disubstituted imidalozes derivative has also been isolated as byproduct. The effects of solvents have also been studied.
