Determination Of Effective Index Of Refraction Of Structured Materials (Photonic Crystals), Md Arafat Hossain May 2023

Determination Of Effective Index Of Refraction Of Structured Materials (Photonic Crystals), Md Arafat Hossain

Theses and Dissertations

Photonic crystals have been widely studied by researchers due to their ability to control light propagation in all spatial directions. For example, 2D photonic crystals can be made of dielectric rods arranged in a square lattice. When light propagates through 2D photonic crystals, it experiences multiple scatterings by the crystal centers. The superposition of all scattered waves forms the transmitted field largely dependent upon the effective index of refraction of the structured material. We propose a method to determine the effective index of refraction through such materials with the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) model. We set up the interface of two …

Flow Monitoring And Tidal Exchange Ratio Estimation For The Bahia Grande After Widening Of The Carl Joe Gayman Pilot Channel: Bahia Grande, Cameron County, Tx, Sabas Lopez Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The Bahia Grande (BG) is an 8,500-acre set of coastal bays and wetlands located between Brownsville and Port Isabel, Tx, near the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) coastline. In 2005, the Carl Joe Gayman Pilot Channel was constructed to address hypersalinity concerns that resulted from natural and anthropogenically-caused tidal isolation since the early 1940’s. In 2022, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) increased the channel’s width and depth in anticipation of increasing tidal exchange ratios by a factor of two to three. Once the channel widening was complete, two SL-1500-3G side-looking acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCPs) were periodically deployed beneath the …

Evaluation Of Black Holes In An Evolving Universe, John P. Naan May 2023

Evaluation Of Black Holes In An Evolving Universe, John P. Naan

Theses and Dissertations

There are various solutions to the Einstein field equations that represent different physical assumptions, but how to represent multiple black holes within an expanding universe remains an area of open interest. The first step to resolving this question involves evaluating spacetime models that contain a single black hole in an expanding universe. Here, we are primarily interested in understanding the energy distribution of black hole models by solving Einstein's equations using the associated spacetime metric and comparing the propagation of waves within the model against other known spacetime models. Specifically, we will evaluate the combined Schwarschild-de Sitter solution under a …

Effects Of Missing Data Imputation Methods On Univariate Time Series Forecasting With Arima And Lstm, Nicholas Niako May 2023

Effects Of Missing Data Imputation Methods On Univariate Time Series Forecasting With Arima And Lstm, Nicholas Niako

Theses and Dissertations

Missing data are common in real-life studies and missing observations within the univariate time series cause analytical problems in the flow of the analysis. Imputation of missing values is an inevitable step in the analysis of every incomplete univariate time series data. The reviewed literature has shown that the focus of existing studies is on comparing the distribution of imputed data. There is a gap of knowledge on how different imputation methods for univariate time series data affect the fit and prediction performance of time series models. In this work, we evaluated the predictive performance of autoregressive integrated moving average …

The Effect Of Cybersecurity Training On Government Employee’S Knowledge Of Cybersecurity Issues And Practices, Juan Jaime Saldana Ii May 2023

The Effect Of Cybersecurity Training On Government Employee’S Knowledge Of Cybersecurity Issues And Practices, Juan Jaime Saldana Ii

Theses and Dissertations

There is an ever-pressing need for cybersecurity awareness and implementation of learning strategies in the workplace to mitigate the increased threat posed by cyber-attacks and exacerbated by an untrained workforce. The lack of cybersecurity knowledge amongst government employees has increased to critical levels due to the amount of sensitive information their agencies are responsible for. The digital compromise of a government entity often leads to a compromise of constituent data along with the disruption of public services (Axelrod, 2019; Yazdanpanahi, 2021). The need for awareness is further complicated by agencies looking to cater to a digital culture looking for a …

This study sought to examine the use of data mining methods, particularly clustering algorithms, to identify inflammatory biomarker phenotypes and their association with obesity in a local adolescent population. The algorithms evaluated in this study included: k-means, Ward's hierarchical …

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Apr 2023

Uniform Distributions On Curves And Quantization, Joseph Rosenblatt, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The basic goal of quantization for probability distribution is to reduce the number of values, which is typically uncountable, describing a probability distribution to some finite set and thus to make an approximation of a continuous probability distribution by a discrete distribution. It has broad application in signal processing and data compression. In this paper, first we define the uniform distributions on different curves such as a line segment, a circle, and the boundary of an equilateral triangle. Then, we give the exact formulas to determine the optimal sets of n -means and the n th quantization errors for different …

In this article, we are concerned with multiple solutions of Schrödinger-Choquard-Kirchhoff equations involving the fractional p -Laplacian and Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical exponents in R N . We classify the multiplicity of the solutions in accordance with the Kirchhoff term M ( ⋅ ) and different ranges of q shown in the nonlinearity f ( x , ⋅ ) by means of the variational methods and Krasnoselskii’s genus theory. As an immediate consequence, some recent related results have been improved and extended.

Cranks For Partitions With Bounded Largest Part, Dennis Eichhorn, Brandt Kronholm, Acadia Larsen Apr 2023

Cranks For Partitions With Bounded Largest Part, Dennis Eichhorn, Brandt Kronholm, Acadia Larsen

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

For 80 years, Dyson’s rank has been known as the partition statistic that witnesses the first two of Ramanujan’s celebrated congruences for the ordinary partition function. In this paper, we show that Dyson’s rank actually witnesses families of partition congruences modulo every prime . This comes from an in-depth study of when a “multiplicity-based statistic” is a crank witnessing congruences for the function p ` n, m˘ , which enumerates partitions of n with parts of size at most m. We also show that as the modulus increases, there is an ever-growing collection of distinct multiplicity-based cranks witnessing these same …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The development of methodologies for regioselective C–H functionalization of N-heterocycles has seen sustained growth over the last two decades. Cooperative reactivity stemming from the addition of Lewis-acidic metals to late-transition-metal complexes has enabled regioselective catalytic transformations. Progress in the design of ligands and Lewis-acidic metal precursors has led to development of in situ cooperative catalysts able to facilitate C–H functionalization of pyridine at C-2, C-3, and C-4 positions. Very recently, focused efforts toward well-defined heterometallic complexes facilitating C-H bond catalysis have been targeted. Transformations showcasing regioselective C-2 transformations have been achieved. This perspective examines select examples delineating the evolution …

The larvae of Lasioptera donacis Coutin feed on fungal communities lining galleries within the mesophyll of leaf sheaths of Arundo donax in an aggregative manner. It has been stated that L. donacis could have established a fundamental symbiotic relationship with one fungus, although the fungal composition of these communities remains unsettled. Using a culture-dependent approach and ITS sequencing, the present work characterizes and compares the fungal communities associated with L. donacis in Eurasia with the endophytes of A. donax in Texas where L. donacis is absent. The 65 cultivable isolates obtained from L. donacis fungal communities were sorted into 15 …

Non-Hermitian Edge Burst Without Skin Localization, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani Apr 2023

Non-Hermitian Edge Burst Without Skin Localization, Cem Yuce, Hamidreza Ramezani

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

In a class of non-Hermitian quantum walk in lossy lattices with open boundary conditions, an unexpected peak in the distribution of the decay probabilities appears at the edge, referred to as an edge burst. It is proposed that the edge burst originates jointly from the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) and the imaginary gaplessness of the spectrum [W.-T. Xue et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 120401 (2022)]. Using a particular one-dimensional lossy lattice with a nonuniform loss rate, we show that the edge burst can occur even in the absence of skin localizations. Furthermore, we discuss that the edge …

The p-adic cellular neural networks (CNNs) are mathematical generalizations of the neural networks introduced by Chua and Yang in the 80s. In this work we present two new types of -adic CNNs that can perform computations with real data, and whose dynamics can be understood almost completely. The first type of networks are edge detectors for grayscale images. The stationary states of these networks are organized hierarchically in a lattice structure. The dynamics of any of these networks consists of transitions toward some minimal state in the lattice. The second type is a new class of reaction–diffusion networks. We investigate …

Nonnegative matrix factorization can be used to automatically detect topics within a corpus in an unsupervised fashion. The technique amounts to an approximation of a nonnegative matrix as the product of two nonnegative matrices of lower rank. In certain applications it is desirable to extract topics and use them to predict quantitative outcomes. In this paper, we show Nonnegative Matrix Factorization can be combined with regression on a continuous response variable by minimizing a penalty function that adds a weighted regression error to a matrix factorization error. We show theoretically that as the weighting increases, the regression error in training …

We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700  Gpc−3 yr−1 and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140  Gpc−3 yr−1, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods …
