Native And Non-Native Plant Species Differentially Affect Arthropod Community Dynamics With Consequences For Crop Production In Lower Rio Grande Valley, Kaitlynn Lavallee, Pushpa G. Soti, Alexis Racelis, Rupesh R. Kariyat

School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In agricultural ecosystems, arthropods play critical roles- including biocontrol, pollination services, and as herbivores. While herbivory negatively affects crop production, the recent decline in beneficial insect numbers have created a global concern, and consequently have led into multiple lines of conservation strategies. Agroecological practices that can provide sustenance, nesting, and refuge for beneficial organisms are considered as some of them, except we lack a better understanding of how seasonal and crop specific variation can affect their community dynamics. In this study, we examined this by investigating how native and non-native plants, when incorporated into a vegetable agroecosystem in Lower Rio …

Online List Coloring For Signed Graphs, Melissa Tupper, Jacob A. White Jan 2022

Online List Coloring For Signed Graphs, Melissa Tupper, Jacob A. White

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We generalize the notion of online list coloring to signed graphs. We define the online list chromatic number of a signed graph, and prove a generalization of Brooks’ Theorem. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a signed graph to be degree paintable, or degree choosable. Finally, we classify the 2-list-colorable and 2-list-paintable signed graphs.

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

With the innovation and integration of the Internet and the financial industry, the third-party payment market has developed greatly and has great potential. This paper discusses the duopoly game between third-party payment service providers and banks, which are the main participants in the mobile payment market. By constructing Nash game model, the conditions of equilibrium point, stability and bifurcation are analyzed. The effects of adjusting parameters and cooperation coefficient on business volume and profit are discussed. The conclusions are as follows: excessive investment will lead to unpredictable fluctuations in the market and fall into chaos; By strengthening cooperation, all participants …

Logarithmic Algorithms For Fair Division Problems, Alexandr Grebennikov, Xenia Isaeva, Andrei V. Malyutin, Mikhail Mikhailov, Oleg R. Musin

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the algorithmic complexity of fair division problems with a focus on minimizing the number of queries needed to find an approximate solution with desired accuracy. We show for several classes of fair division problems that under certain natural conditions on sets of preferences, a logarithmic number of queries with respect to accuracy is sufficient.

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian Jan 2022

Global In Time Self-Interacting Dirac Fields In The De Sitter Space, Karen Yagdjian

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper the semilinear equation of the spin-12 fields in the de Sitter space is investigated. We prove the existence of the global in time small data solution in the expanding de Sitter universe. Then, under the Lochak–Majorana condition, we prove the existence of the global in time solution with large data. The sufficient conditions for the solutions to blow up in finite time are given for large data in the expanding and contracting de Sitter spacetimes. The influence of the Hubble constant on the lifespan is estimated.

Negative Order Kdv Equation With No Solitary Traveling Waves, Miguel Rodriguez, Jing Li, Zhijun Qiao Dec 2021

Negative Order Kdv Equation With No Solitary Traveling Waves, Miguel Rodriguez, Jing Li, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We consider the negative order KdV (NKdV) hierarchy which generates nonlinear integrable equations. Selecting different seed functions produces different evolution equations. We apply the traveling wave setting to study one of these equations. Assuming a particular type of solution leads us to solve a cubic equation. New solutions are found, but none of these are classical solitary traveling wave solutions.

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents the results of a search for generic short-duration gravitational-wave transients in data from the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. Transients with durations of milliseconds to a few seconds in the 24–4096 Hz frequency band are targeted by the search, with no assumptions made regarding the incoming signal direction, polarization, or morphology. Gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences that have been identified by other targeted analyses are detected, but no statistically significant evidence for other gravitational wave bursts is found. Sensitivities to a variety of signals are presented. These include updated upper limits on …

Large-scale water transfer projects (LWTPs) transfer water to urban and agricultural areas. The Majes-Siguas canal, established in 1983, is an LWTP that created a thriving agricultural area through irrigating the Majes district in the Atacama Desert of Peru. Like other LWTP receiving basins, the project has attracted an influx of migrants who work on the farms. At the same time, the Majes LWTP is the district’s only source of water and has an aging infrastructure which presents significant risks. While many studies critically analyze the consequences of LWTPs in water supply basins, few evaluate the resilience of communities living in …

Existence Results For Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations Involving The Fractional (P, Q)-Laplacian And Critical Nonlinearities, Huilin Lv, Shenzhou Zheng, Zhaosheng Feng Dec 2021

Existence Results For Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations Involving The Fractional (P, Q)-Laplacian And Critical Nonlinearities, Huilin Lv, Shenzhou Zheng, Zhaosheng Feng

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, we consider the existence of ground state positive solutions for nonlinear Schrodinger equations of the fractional (p, q)-Laplacian with Rabinowitz potentials defined in R-n,

(-Delta)(p)(s1) u + (-Delta)(q)(s2) q u+ V(epsilon x)(vertical bar u vertical bar(p-2)u+vertical bar u vertical bar(q-2)u) =lambda f(u) + sigma vertical bar u vertical bar q*(-2)(s2)u.

We prove existence by confining different ranges of the parameter lambda under the subcritical or critical nonlinearities caused by sigma = 0 or 1, respectively. In particular, a delicate calculation for the critical growth is provided so as to avoid the failure of a global Palais-Smale condition …

Chromatic Quasisymmetric Class Functions For Combinatorial Hopf Monoids, Jacob A. White Dec 2021

Chromatic Quasisymmetric Class Functions For Combinatorial Hopf Monoids, Jacob A. White

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the chromatic quasisymmetric class function of a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid. Given a linearized combinatorial Hopf monoid H, and an H-structure h on a set N, there are proper colorings of h, generalizing graph colorings and poset partitions. We show that the automorphism group of h acts on the set of proper colorings. The chromatic quasisymmetric class function enumerates the fixed points of this action, weighting each coloring with a monomial. For the Hopf monoid of graphs this invariant generalizes Stanley's chromatic symmetric function and specializes to the orbital chromatic polynomial of Cameron and Kayibi.

We also introduce …

A Multilayer Network Model Of The Coevolution Of The Spread Of A Disease And Competing Opinions, Kaiyan Peng, Zheng Lu, Vanessa Lin, Michael R. Lindstrom, Christian Parkinson, Chuntian Wang, Andrea L. Bertozzi, Mason A. Porter Dec 2021

Porter

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

During the COVID-19 pandemic, conflicting opinions on physical distancing swept across social media, affecting both human behavior and the spread of COVID-19. Inspired by such phenomena, we construct a two-layer multiplex network for the coupled spread of a disease and conflicting opinions. We model each process as a contagion. On one layer, we consider the concurrent evolution of two opinions — pro-physical-distancing and anti-physical-distancing — that compete with each other and have mutual immunity to each other. The disease evolves on the other layer, and individuals are less likely (respectively, more likely) to become infected when they adopt the pro-physical-distancing …

Point Absorber Limits To Future Gravitational-Wave Detectors, Wenxuan Jia, Hiroaki Yamamoto, Kevin Kuns, Anamaria Effler, Matthew Evans, Peter Fritschel, R. Abbott, C. Adams, R. Adhikari, Karla E. Ramirez

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

High-quality optical resonant cavities require low optical loss, typically on the scale of parts per million. However, unintended micron-scale contaminants on the resonator mirrors that absorb the light circulating in the cavity can deform the surface thermoelastically, and thus increase losses by scattering light out of the resonant mode. The point absorber effect is a limiting factor in some highpower cavity experiments, for example, the Advanced LIGO gravitational wave detector. In this Letter, we present a general approach to the point absorber effect from first principles and simulate its contribution to the increased scattering. The achievable circulating power in current …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications and Presentations

We search for signatures of gravitational lensing in the gravitational-wave signals from compact binary coalescences detected by Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and Advanced Virgo during O3a, the first half of their third observing run. We study: (1) the expected rate of lensing at current detector sensitivity and the implications of a non-observation of strong lensing or a stochastic gravitational-wave background on the merger-rate density at high redshift; (2) how the interpretation of individual high-mass events would change if they were found to be lensed; (3) the possibility of multiple images due to strong lensing by galaxies or galaxy …

Fresh produce safety is major concern in United States. Fresh produce has been associated with numerous food-borne outbreaks each year. Salmonella has been a recurring issue in the papaya industry. Since 2010, imported papayas have been implicated in 8 multistate outbreaks associated with Salmonella spp. causing 480 illnesses, 113 hospitalization and 3 deaths. The main reason behind this problem is as fresh papaya is grown on fields where they are constantly exposed to preharvest microbial contamination through contaminated irrigation water, agricultural soil, raw manure and/or feces deposited by intruding domestic or wild animals. Moreover, majority fresh papaya is also consumed …

Dynamical Casimir Effect In A Superconducting Circuit Periodic Lattice, Andres Cuellar Vega Dec 2021

Dynamical Casimir Effect In A Superconducting Circuit Periodic Lattice, Andres Cuellar Vega

Theses and Dissertations

The dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) is the generation of real photons out of the quantum vacuum due to a rapid modulation of boundary conditions for the electromagnetic field, such as a mirror oscillating at speeds comparable to the speed of light. Previous work demonstrated experimentally that DCE radiation can be generated in electrical circuits based on superconducting microfabricated waveguides, where a rapid modulation of boundary conditions corresponding to semi-transparent mirrors is realized by tuning the applied magnetic flux through superconducting quantum-interference devices (SQUIDs) that are embedded in the waveguide circuits. We propose a novel SQUID periodic lattice architecture, in which …

Microwave Assisted Depolymerization Of Waste Pet Bottles Via Glycolysis, Kingsley Bassey Dec 2021

Microwave Assisted Depolymerization Of Waste Pet Bottles Via Glycolysis, Kingsley Bassey

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most promising and sustainable chemical depolymerization methods for managing the complex environmental problem arising from waste poly(ethylene) terephthalate (PET) bottles is glycolysis. However key challenges such as longer reaction times, complex separation procedures for the depolymerized products, selectivity, thermally stable catalyst need to be addressed.

In this work, we investigated the glycolysis of waste PET under microwave conditions using 1,5,7-Triazabicyclo [4.4.0] dec5-ene (TBD) and 1,8-Diazabicyclo [5.4.0] undec-7-ene (DBU) as catalyst. We evaluated the effect of reaction parameters such as temperature, catalyst concentration and time on PET depolymerization rate (%PET conversion) and product yield. The reaction was conducted …

Comparison Of Statistical Methods For Modeling Count Data With An Application To Length Of Hospital Stay, Gustavo A. Fernandez Dec 2021

Comparison Of Statistical Methods For Modeling Count Data With An Application To Length Of Hospital Stay, Gustavo A. Fernandez

Theses and Dissertations

Hospital length of stay (LOS) is a key indicator of hospital care management efficiency, cost of care, and hospital planning. Therefore, understanding hospital LOS variability is always an important healthcare focus. Hospital LOS data are count data, with discrete and nonnegative values, typically right-skewed, and often exhibiting excessive zeros. Numerous studies have been conducted to model hospital LOS to identify significant predictors contributing to its variability. Many researchers have used linear regression with or without logarithmic transformation of the outcome variable LOS, or logistic regression on a dichotomized LOS. These regression methods usually violate models’ assumptions and are subject …
